Why Newfoundland and Labrador’s Mining Sector is More Exciting Than Ever!
Send us Fan MailThe energy at #CentralMinEx2026 was undeniable—Newfoundland and Labrador (NL) is officially a top-tier destination for mineral exploration. Currently, the province ranks as high as fourth in Canada for exploration spending, as investors shift their focus to jurisdictions with clear permitting processes and strong collaborative environments. Why the excitement?Massive Discoveries: The success of New Found Gold’s Keats Zone, which yielded spectacular results like 92 g/t over 19 meters, has ignited a modern "gold rush" in the region.Long-term Production: Major projects like Valentine are entering production with potential lifespans of 25 to 30 years, signaling a stable, multi-generational industry.Beyond Gold: The province is proving to be a treasure trove for critical minerals, including copper, tungsten, and lithium, which are vital for the global energy transition and defense sectors.Economic Impact: With high levels of government support and a thriving network of trades—from electricians to geologists—the sector is bringing unprecedented wealth and opportunity to local communities.Spotlight: Peter Dimmell – A Visionary in the Field 🌟Few have played a more pivotal role in recognizing the province's potential than Peter Dimmell. With over 50 years of experience, Peter was one of the first to look at the Appleton Fault zone and see its future.Pioneering Exploration: Working with Noranda in the early 70s and 80s, Peter proposed early till surveys that led to the initial discovery of gold in Central Newfoundland. The "Real Start": He was a key driver in the 1998 staking of the ground that eventually became the Queensway Project (New Found Gold), a discovery that transformed the regional industry.Ongoing Leadership: Today, Peter continues to push the boundaries as a director of companies like Pirate Gold, Northern Shield Resources and Visionary Copper and Gold, exploring new systems like epithermal gold and porphyry copper that were unrecognized in NL just 20 years ago.The mining story of Newfoundland and Labrador is still just "scratching the surface." #GaleForceWins has recorded well over 450 mining interviews as of the time of this posting. EP275 Canadian Sailors, Canadian Pride | Canada Day 2025
Send us Fan MailDive into the heart of Canadian pride as told by the brave men and women of the Royal Canadian Navy (RCN)! These interviews reveal a profound sense of what it means to be Canadian, deeply rooted in service, identity, and the extraordinary experiences gained through the RCN.Here’s what Canadian pride means to these remarkable sailors:Serving and Contributing to the Nation: Many express a clear sense of duty and a desire to serve their country, viewing their work as directly contributing to the security and well-being of Canadians and proudly representing Canada on a global stage. Impactful actions, like helping orphanages abroad, foster a positive view of Canada. The RCN serves the country "day in day out".Immense Pride in the Royal Canadian Navy: There is an overwhelming sense of pride in being a part of the Royal Canadian Navy. The RCN is consistently described as one of "Canada's most important institutions," demonstrating "solid leadership". New ships, like HMCS Margaret Brooke and HMCS Harry DeWolf, are described as "something that all Canadians should be proud of," reflecting successful collaboration. The successful transit of the Northwest Passage by HMCS Harry DeWolf is a particular source of national pride, showcasing Canada's operational capability in remote regions [SMP, 113, 149, 192, 200]. Historic vessels like HMCS Oriole are seen as "outreach vessels" promoting the Navy.Appreciation for Canada's Diversity and Opportunities: Interviewees, including immigrants, consistently highlight Canada as an "amazing country" with "so many opportunities". Many immigrant sailors express their service as a way to "give back to this wonderful country" for the opportunities provided. The Navy itself is a "beautiful mosaic of cultures and genders," actively striving for greater equity and equality.Camaraderie and the "Family" Bond: A recurring and powerful theme is the strong bonds formed among sailors, often described as being like a "family". This close-knit environment fosters mutual support and makes challenging deployments more manageable.Personal Growth and Adventure: For many, joining the Navy is about personal challenge, travel, and experiencing things "you'll never seen" or would not typically do in civilian life. This journey instills confidence and a broad understanding of the country and the world. The Royal Canadian Navy offers amazing adventures and opportunities to "see the world".How Gale Force Wins Brought These Stories to You: To capture these authentic voices, Gale Force Wins embarked on a global journey, conducting interviews directly from Canadian naval vessels and bases across the country and around the world. BONUS: Summary of the "We are Here" podcast by The Association of Allied Health Professionals (AAHP)
Send us Fan Mail"We Are Here"Recorded at the 2025 AAHP Biennial General Meeting, The We Are Here Podcast features 20 inspiring voices from allied health across Newfoundland & Labrador. This series offers an authentic, on-the-ground look at the challenges, innovations, and vital roles of allied health professionals across the province. WATCH all the interviews here.I. A Diverse and Essential Workforce From physiotherapy and respiratory therapy to psychology, pharmacy, audiology, and social work, allied health professionals are essential partners in patient care. They work across all life stages, improving mobility, enabling communication, managing medications, delivering emergency and critical care, and helping people live independently. Many hold advanced degrees and bring passion, empathy, and technical skill to their work. As AAHP President Gordon Piercey notes, they are “highly educated, specialised, and dedicated to helping people.”II. Key System Challenges Recurring concerns include severe staffing shortages, long waitlists—especially in rural areas—and difficulty recruiting and retaining professionals. Participants described overburdened systems and time pressures that impact patient outcomes. Many called for better understanding and recognition of their roles, warning of the cost of underutilising this workforce. One example cited a major eye clinic operating at just 50% capacity due to staffing gaps. The strain is growing as the province’s population ages and healthcare needs intensify.III. Opportunities for Change Despite challenges, the tone is hopeful. Guests called for greater collaboration, integrated care teams, and allowing professionals to work to their full scope. Frontline voices want to be consulted in decision-making, bringing valuable insights into what works and what needs change. Innovation through technology, early intervention, and stronger support for new professionals are also seen as critical. The need for upstream, community-based care models was a frequent theme, alongside more visibility and respect for allied health roles.IV. A Call to Action Speakers consistently urge policymakers to “listen to us”—to the professionals delivering hands-on care every day. They call for improved resources, better training pipelines, and more public awareness. The need to promote allied health careers and increase support in rural areas is urgent. As one guest said, “valuable, knowledgeable people are leaving the system—and not enough are coming in.” Healthcare systems must evolve by supporting this essential workforce.V. Shared Values Throughout the podcast, a deep sense of dedication, resilience, and human connection shines through. Allied health professionals care deeply about the people they serve. Their stories show the power of collaboration, the impact of listening, and the drive to improve healthcare for all Newfoundlanders and Labradorians.Gale Force Wins started out simply as an inspirational podcast releasing episodes wherever you get your podcasts every Tuesday evening.
