Game Plan

Sure, this started as a podcast about Jiu Jitsu, but let’s be honest, we talk about everything. Training, injuries, gym culture… but also hunting, tech, life outside the mats, and whatever else we’re obsessing over that week.If you’ve ever gone to open mat and stayed two hours after just to talk about your heart rate data, supplements, or whether deer feel fear this is your kind of pod.No hard rounds here. Just good convos, occasional wisdom, and a lot of off-topic detours.

Why Jiu-Jitsu Athletes Secretly Need Pilates | Shelley Hardin | Game Plan Ep. 024

In this episode, we sit down with Shelly Hardin — a physical therapist, Pilates instructor, and jiu-jitsu athlete — for a conversation that goes way deeper than just rehab and recovery. We get into how she found jiu-jitsu, what it’s like training in Austin, the difference between traditional schools and Danaher’s room, and why Pilates might actually be one of the most underrated tools for grapplers.  We also talk through mobility vs stability, neck training, common injuries in jiu-jitsu, bad posture from phones and screens, and why so many people are training around problems they don’t fully understand. Shelly breaks down how she works with athletes, what she sees on the mat, and why a lot of fighters could move and recover way better with the right approach.  The second half of this one goes into some deeper territory too — mental health, bipolar disorder, chronic pain, emotional stress, and how all of that can show up in the body. We also get into some more out-there ideas around biofields, vibration, modern health, diet, and why jiu-jitsu helps so many people far beyond just the physical side of training.  This one’s part movement talk, part rehab talk, part life talk — and a really fun episode all around.0:00:00 Gym Politics, Training Rooms, and Why People Leave0:02:00 Jiu-Jitsu Was Her Escape From an Unhappy Marriage0:06:00 She Started Jiu-Jitsu Because the Gym Was Boring0:10:00 Gracie Barra vs Danaher: The Truth About Both0:13:00 Why Strong Fundamentals Still Beat Fancy Moves0:18:00 Pilates Was Created by a Fighter?!0:21:00 Why Most Jiu-Jitsu Guys Secretly Need Pilates0:29:00 Mobility vs Stability: Almost Everyone Gets This Wrong0:35:00 Hypermobile vs Stiff Athletes: Who Gets Hurt More?0:39:00 The 3 Injuries Destroying Jiu-Jitsu Athletes0:46:00 Her Bipolar Diagnosis Changed Everything0:51:00 Biofields, Tuning Forks, and the Line Between Science and Woo Woo1:00:00 How PT Helped Him Trust His Body Again1:06:00 From Dancer to Physical Therapist to Grappler1:12:00 What’s Actually Broken About Physical Therapy1:17:00 Phones, Sitting, and “Text Neck” Are Wrecking People1:22:00 Dead Butt Syndrome Is Real1:26:00 “You’re Doing It Wrong”: Why Exercise Form Matters1:42:00 The Carnivore Diet Actually Worked?1:55:00 Why Jiu-Jitsu Is So Good for Mental Health

The Dark Side of Jiu Jitsu | Game Plan | Ep. 018

SKIP TO 30:00 FOR OUR DEEP DIVE INTO SEXUAL MISCONDUCT IN BJJ.In this episode of Game Plan, Davis and Juico start with the lighter side of life, recounting the chaotic saga of Juico’s dog, Pete, getting sprayed by a skunk—before diving into the grueling reality of weight cutting in combat sports. At the thirty-minute mark, the tone shifts as we address the systemic issue of sexual misconduct within grappling. Davis shares his own personal experiences encountering predators on the mats and provides a concise timeline of the major scandals that have rocked the Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu community. We discuss the "hero worship" culture that places coaches and athletes on pedestals, often allowing them to exploit and abuse their positions for decades. It is time to purge the sport of these individuals and instead elevate those who lead with integrity, such as Lachlan Giles. The "fear" that the sport will crumble without its "icons" is a myth—there will be plenty of high-level talent left once the predators are ousted. We conclude with a call for mandatory safeguarding training for gym owners and coaches to ensure the next generation is protected. Please Like, Subscribe and Comment down below to support Game Plan the Pod!Follow Juico and Davis on Instagram:@colejiujitsu @juico.skilltree.matspace ________________Check out academysafe.org to find or become an accredited, background checked gym! Nick Loera | Game Plan | Ep. 009

Nick Loera is a videographer, motion graphics artist, financial coach and podcaster. Nick started his businesses in the California Bay Area as a videographer, marketer and motion graphics artist. He recently moved to Austin, Texas and has since shifted his focus to financial coaching, content creation and podcasting. "Region Beta" refers to the Region-Beta Paradox, a psychological phenomenon that is frequently discussed by podcaster Chris Williamson on his show, Modern Wisdom. The core idea is that people often remain stuck in a state of comfortable complacency because a situation is "not bad enough" to force them to change, but also not good enough for them to truly flourish. Nick argues that many people with financial struggles are stuck in the region beta paradox and that they would actually benefit if their situation was worse, forcing them to make changes. Will Glass | Whiskey Tasting | Game Plan | Ep. 007

After spending his college years competing for the University of Texas Men's Swim Team, Will Glass found himself working in the spirit distillation business in Austin, Texas. After years working in this industry, Will decided to start his own business by selling used American Bourbon barrels to markets outside the USA. He currently owns and operates Bluebonnet Barrel Company in Austin, Texas.Bourbon is a uniquely American spirit made from at least 51% corn mash and aged in charred white oak barrels. The legal definition for bourbon requires a single use of the charred oak barrel, meaning once a bourbon barrel is used, it cannot be used again to make bourbon. The barrels themselves however have plenty of "life" left in them and can be used to age other spirits and whiskeys. Markets worldwide buy these used American Bourbon barrels to age spirits. Will has found his market niche in supplying international buyers with used American Bourbon barrels. In this episode, Will takes Davis and Juico through a whiskey tasting consisting of Japanese Whiskey, Bourbon and Rye. ________________________Check out Will's Philanthropy!https://swimswam.com/longhorn-strokes-foundation-launches-to-support-free-lessons-for-underprivileged-youth/Bluebonnet Barrel Company https://www.bluebonnetbarrels.com/________________________Produced by: Juico Bowley (IG: @Juico.skilltree.matspace)Host: Davis Cole (IG: @colejiujitsu)00:00 01:45 Introduction 01:46 15:25 What is Bourbon? 15:26 18:53 Different Types of Whiskey 18:54 24:17 From Distiller to Entrepreneur 24:18 37:04 International Bourbon Barrel Market 37:05 47:13 Whiskey World Wide 47:14 54:25 Sport Swimming 54:26 1:10:17 Will’s Jiu Jitsu Journey 01:10:18 01:25:29 Bluebonnet Barrel Company 01:26:00 01:34:35 Chinese Tariffs 01:34:36 01:48:59 Longhorn Strokes Foundation 01:49:00 01:50:30 Follow Us!

    Ep.002 | John Broughton

Wrestler, videographer, entrepreneur.  Here we talk to John about how 75 hard just wasn't hard enough and his path from meme lord to creating a platform to help grappling athletes and coaches succeed with Athletes Ocean. SOOO....Audios been fixed. Dope, But the placement of the boom arm for the guests mic decided to fight for the attention of my cams focus a number of times. Real sorry about that. Ep. 001 | William Tackett

Thanks for joining us for our first episode of Game Plan! Here we have black belt, 2x ADCC trails winner, and long time homie, William Tackett. In this episode we dive into what it's like being a UFC BJJ athlete and talk about the decision to move to Las Vegas versus staying and training at your home gym. We break down what makes Vegas such a hotspot for fighters, what’s best for athletes trying to build their careers, and what's best for the sport. Then in stark contrast from the professionals, we dive in to revisit Juico’s very first competition match at a Tap Cancer Out charity event.Whether you’re into Jiu Jitsu or MMA, professional or hobbyist, this pod starts off for the nerds of the sport and ends for the casuals with a good ol' white belt match review.Hope y'all enjoy._________________________Notes from the editor - You may notice some audio issues during the ep. Trust me, I hate it too. Some of y'all may know that we immediately upgraded our audio after this ep so future episodes should be much more crispy. Please bear with us as we get xp and level up our game here. We appreciate your patience and thanks for stickin around!Much love, from atx_________________________Find more of us here - Instagram: @gameplanthepodInstagram: @colejiujitsuInstagram: @juico.skilltree.matspaceInstagram: @tackett_jiujitsu

    Ep. 000

Lmao props to yall speakers out there but talking, or honestly even just being in front of a bunch of cameras is so intimidating to me.Wanted to make like a, idk. A trailer? Teaser? Type of thing just to introduce us and the concept of what were going for. Also it was great way to test our set design, if you can call it that? I've never really built out a set for a pod by myself before so cam placements, lighting, and sound control was all pretty new to me.This room looks pretty ridiculous but were making the best with what we got folks.Hope y'all enjoyLet us know who we should bring on!------------------------------------------------Find more of us here - Instagram: @gameplanthepodInstagram: @colejiujitsuInstagram: @juico.skilltree.matspace

ABOUT THIS SHOW

Sure, this started as a podcast about Jiu Jitsu, but let’s be honest, we talk about everything. Training, injuries, gym culture… but also hunting, tech, life outside the mats, and whatever else we’re obsessing over that week.If you’ve ever gone to open mat and stayed two hours after just to talk about your heart rate data, supplements, or whether deer feel fear this is your kind of pod.No hard rounds here. Just good convos, occasional wisdom, and a lot of off-topic detours.
