Gaming The System - The Feminist Gaming Podcast

The podcast where 3 intersectional feminists examine gaming and games through a feminist lens. New Episodes every Thursday.Alex, Jem and Matt believe gaming is good. Gaming is good for relaxation, for learning, for bringing people together and for your mental health. But like all media, there is both good and bad and we want to address how we make gaming a safe and healthy environment for women and minority groups (although lets not forget that people of colour are the global ethnic majority). We want to see the small steps towards an intersectional feminist future that have been made in games to go further. We are Gaming the System because we want to see our beloved world of Gaming reflect the values we hold dear, and until it does we are here to shine a light on what needs to change.-----PAYPAL & PATREONIf you want to support us, you can send us a one-off donation via paypal or subscribe monthly to our Patreon.<

BAFTA 2026: Half the Awards, All the Opinions (Episode 280)

Alex and Matt kick off GTS's two-part coverage of the 22nd BAFTA Games Awards, working their way through the first half of the night's categories and they have opinions. The pair run through Multiplayer, Artistic Achievement, Evolving Game, Performer in a Supporting Role, British Game, Animation, Game Design, and Technical Achievement. Along the way, they dig into whether BAFTA's categories are broad enough to be meaningful, the tension between hyperrealism and genuine artistry, and whether studios that shipped broken games at launch should get credit for fixing them a decade later. Matt has thoughts on that last one. Strong ones. They also touch on the changes BAFTA made to its voting process this year, bringing in specialist craft chapters for key categories for the first time and what that might mean for who wins going forward.Part two is coming, with the remaining categories plus a deeper look at representation, inclusion, and the controversies surrounding the ceremony.Episode-specific tags: #BAFTAGames2026 #BAFTAGamesAwards #ClairObscur #GhostOfYotei #DeathStranding2 #Atomfall #Dispatch #NoMansSky #Blueprince📢 Support the Podcast!Let us know on BlueSky (@gamingthesystem.bsky.social), Instagram (@gamingthesystempodcast) or in the comments on YouTube! If you love Gaming The System, consider supporting us:🔹 Patreon: patreon.com/gamingthesystem – get exclusive content!🔹 PayPal Donations: [email protected]🔹 Subscribe & Review: Share the podcast with fellow gamers!🎙 Gaming The System releases new episodes every ThursdayThanks for listening, and remember – there’s always another game to play that isn’t full of nonsense. 🎮✨#GamingTheSystem #GamingCulture #FeministGaming #feministgamingpodcast #feministgamers #intersectionalgaming #equalityingames #GamingRepresentation #AccessibleGaming #IntersectionalGaming #GamingTheSystemPodcast

In this episode of Gaming the System, host Matt and guests Alex and Jem discuss girls’ experiences of sport in childhood and adolescence, focusing on how school PE can shape lifelong relationships with physical activity. Alex describes growing up with cerebral palsy in mainstream schools, feeling frustrated and ashamed by inaccessible activities, lack of funding for accommodations, and being shouted at by teachers, while also noting swimming and judo were framed through physiotherapy. Jem shares loving sport in primary school but being driven away by a hostile, competitive high school environment, repeated humiliation in PE, and being allowed to sit out athletics until later discovering aerobics as a more positive option.📢 Support the Podcast!Let us know on BlueSky (@gamingthesystem.bsky.social), Instagram (@gamingthesystempodcast) or in the comments on YouTube!

The Dark Matter of Gaming: Attitudes & Wellbeing Part 2 (Episode 277)

Sometimes the things shaping how we feel about our hobby are the things we can't see.In Part 1, we dug into Oxford research showing that when it comes to gaming and mental health, the hours matter far less than whether the time felt worthwhile. This week, we pick the thread back up and follow it somewhere unexpected.Matt offers a striking metaphor borrowed from physics: dark matter made visible because of how it pulls on everything around it. The way we feel about our gaming and the way others react is shaped by forces we can't always name. 120 hours in game is badge of honour in some circles and a dirty secret in others. We touch on how gaming can be a refuge during stressful moments, family card games can reaffirm sibling bonds, and finding your tribe, or tribes. We finish up with another study from the Oxford Internet Institute, which maps out 13 distinct mechanisms through which gaming can affect mental health. Finally the conversation might begin to move past "how much" and toward "how, why, and for whom."Listen to Part 1: [link to Part 1]Further reading: "13 ways gaming affects your mental health – for better and worse" — Oxford Internet Institute https://www.oii.ox.ac.uk/news-events/13-ways-gaming-affects-your-mental-health-for-better-and-worse/#GamingAndMentalHealth #GamingWellbeing #MentalHealthInGaming #OxfordInternetInstitute #GamingResearch #GamingAsRefuge #FindYourTribe #PlayMatters📢 Support the Podcast!Let us know on BlueSky (@gamingthesystem.bsky.social), Instagram (@gamingthesystempodcast) or in the comments on YouTube!

Gaming the Guilt: Shame, Pressure, and What Healthy Gaming Really Looks Like (Episode 276)

Is screen time the enemy, or is it the shame we attach to it? In this episode, GTS examine new research suggesting it's not how long you spend gaming that affects your mental health, but whether you feel that time was worthwhile. Jem, Alex and Matt unpack Perceived Value of Video Games, but Not Hours Played, Predicts Mental Well-Being in Casual Adult Nintendo Players, a study led by Dr. Nick Ballou (Oxford Internet Institute) published in March 2025. Across 703 players and over 140,000 hours of Nintendo Switch gameplay, the research found no meaningful link between playtime and wellbeing. But, they did find that players who felt their gaming was a positive use of time showed measurably better outcomes. They dig deep into what the research doesn't quite address: who gets to decide what counts as time well spent? Is the pressure to justify our gaming habits doing more damage than the hours logged ever could - particularly for women?Expect personal stories, honest reflections on gaming-related shame, and a conversation that pushes back hard on the idea that healthy gaming has a time limit attached to it. 273 - GTS News: New study on Misogynistic Abuse in gaming

In this episode of Gaming the System, Gem, Alex, and Matt discuss a recent Sex Roles study showing that women gamers who identify as feminists or take action for gender equality are blamed more for the sexism they experience online, especially by people with stronger sexist attitudes. They outline two studies using a League of Legends scenario involving a gamer named Lucia, where participants assigned more blame when Lucia was described as a feminist or as engaging in more extreme collective action. The hosts connect these findings to broader patterns of victim-blaming, institutional sexism, and manosphere-driven misogyny, and they explore how “feminist killjoy” fears can discourage speaking up. They share personal experiences of gendered hostility in gaming spaces, discuss “passing” and choosing battles, and reflect on how the podcast provides support and confidence while sometimes increasing visibility as a target.📢 Support the Podcast!Let us know on BlueSky (@gamingthesystem.bsky.social), Instagram (@gamingthesystempodcast) or in the comments on YouTube!

In Part 1, Jem, Alex, and Matt explored the Women in Games Manifesto and the persistent gender gap in the games industry. In this follow-up episode, the conversation turns to artificial intelligence. Could it be the catalyst for change the industry needs, or is it making things worse?Jem shares her own experiment, asking Gemini to generate images of a "young video gamer," a "game designer," and a "CEO". 267 - Making a Man Out of GPU - Part 2

The hosts discuss how visible identity affects prejudice and whether men are less likely to challenge toxic masculinity because they can “pass” as traditionally masculine through code switching. They explore the “crisis of masculinity,” arguing patriarchy harms everyone but disproportionately harms women, trans, and non-binary people, while wealth and power shape outcomes most. The conversation covers performative masculinity, loneliness and the incel movement as exploited vulnerability, and the idea of choosing voluntary celibacy to reduce “sex noise” and rediscover identity. They also argue that diverse media representation expands what’s possible and that gaming, through choice, multiple playstyles, and role experimentation, undermines the idea there is only one way to be a man or a person.📢 Support the Podcast!Let us know on BlueSky (@gamingthesystem.bsky.social), Instagram (@gamingthesystempodcast) or in the comments on YouTube!

    266 - Making a Man Out of GPU - Part 1

This episode continues a multi-part conversation on masculinity and “positive masculinity,” focusing on who gets to define masculinity and how the concept has changed throughout history. The discussion is sparked by China’s media crackdown on “effeminate men,” framed as promoting “revolutionary culture” and official morality, and explores how gender norms can function as social and political control in authoritarian systems and beyond. The speakers compare cultural expectations across China, the US, and the UK, including how class shaped one host’s upbringing and feelings of needing to repress traits seen as nontraditional. They argue that claims of a single “natural” masculinity mirror narratives that present capitalism and other systems as inevitable, and they critique propaganda that equates masculinity with aggression, dominance, and emotional suppression. The conversation examines figures like Andrew Tate as reinforcing a hierarchy that exploits young men, and references research suggesting testosterone is linked to status-seeking rather than inherent violence. The episode connects hardening gender roles to periods of crisis and to broader political scapegoating—of migrants, LGBTQ+ people, women, and disabled people—arguing these narratives distract from inequality and protect those with wealth and power by keeping “peasants” fighting each other instead of challenging the ruling class.📢 Support the Podcast!Let us know on BlueSky (@gamingthesystem.bsky.social), Instagram (@gamingthesystempodcast) or in the comments on YouTube!

Xmas special : Playing in the Dark: Light, Shadow, and Seasonal Gaming (Episode 257)

As the year moves toward the winter solstice, this episode of Gaming the System explores how light and darkness function as both technical tools and emotional languages in games. Jem, Alex and Matt reflect on how lighting shapes atmosphere, tension and meaning, and how the darker months influence how we play.Games including Alan Wake 2, Little Nightmares 3, Abzu, Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, GRIS, Concrete Genie, and, of course, Tomb Raider are discussed as examples of games where light and darkness are central to storytelling. The episode also unpacks metaphor and subversion: darkness as rest rather than evil, light as exposure rather than safety, and how stealth, shadows and day/night cycles impact game play. From survival games where night radically alters play, to titles that use colour, seasons and weather to evoke emotional responses, the conversation highlights how games mirror our need for contrast, pause and recalibration.A reflective, quietly festive episode that sits in the space between endings and beginnings.📢 Support the Podcast!Let us know on BlueSky (@gamingthesystem.bsky.social), Instagram (@gamingthesystempodcast) or in the comments on YouTube!

Death in Games, Part 3: Grief, Memory, and Meaning (Episode 256)

In the final part of our series on death in games, we shift from mechanics to meaning. We explore how modern games use grief, memory, and emotional pacing to create more honest depictions of loss than many linear stories can manage. From Spiritfarer and Edith Finch to Journey, Hellblade, and God of War, we look at how interactive storytelling allows players to pause, avoid, or confront difficult moments in their own time. This mirrors real-life grief far more closely than film or TV.We also discuss the long-running trope of the “dead loved one” as narrative fuel, the rise of emotionally literate writing in games, and the growing recognition of games as a space people actively use to process bereavement. Finally, we talk about “digital ghosts” immortalised through save files, screenshots, and videos that become unexpected mementoes of who we once were. Can we digitally capture our souls this way?A reflective, grounded conversation about how games help us face endings and why these virtual experiences stay with us long after we log off.📢 Support the Podcast!Let us know on BlueSky (@gamingthesystem.bsky.social), Instagram (@gamingthesystempodcast) or in the comments on YouTube!

Death in Games Part 2 Learning to Die Better: How Games Shape Our View of Death (Episode 255)

In this second episode of our three-part series on Death in Games, Jem, Alex, and Matt dig deeper into how death is portrayed across gaming, and what that means for how we understand grief, resilience, and the human condition. We explore whether repeated, low-stakes death in games desensitises players, or whether the real issue lies in hyperreal shooters that mirror real-world conflicts. We also discuss how emotionally grounded games like God of War create space to reflect on grief in ways that feel unexpectedly profound. We talk about the emotional shock of losing companions, the narrative power of killing characters early (hello, Game of Thrones), and why failure loops and boss fights quietly teach resilience far better than most real-life systems do. There’s also a look at permadeath modes: who plays them, why they’re stressful as hell, and why “hardest mode or you’re not a real gamer” is absolute nonsense. We end the episode with one-sentence lessons we can take from in-game death including Alex’s fridge magnet slogan. Games that get a mention: Fortnite, Overwatch, Call of Duty, God of War, Split Fiction, Baldur’s Gate 3, Pandemic Legacy.Next time: Part 3 will look at how modern games explore grief, memory, and meaning📢 Support the Podcast!Let us know on BlueSky (@gamingthesystem.bsky.social), Instagram (@gamingthesystempodcast) or in the comments on YouTube!

Beyond the Script: Can AI Make NPCs Real? (Ep 250)

In the second half of our AI in gaming discussion, we turn to the rise of intelligent NPCs – and what happens when they start to think for themselves. Could AI make game worlds richer and more believable, or would it destroy the structure and chaos we love? The team explore how realism can both enhance and break immersion, from the comedic unpredictability of NPCs in Assassin’s Creed Odyssey to the eerie brilliance of the Shadow of Mordor Nemesis System, which made enemies remember and evolve from past encounters. There’s nostalgia for the “arrow to the knee” days, when NPCs were part of the joke, and concern that too much autonomy could strip away that sense of fun.A discussion of the AI Darth Vader in Fortnite—who quickly went rogue and started swearing at players—highlights the dangers of unleashing learning systems in live environments. From there, the conversation moves into deeper territory: if NPCs become lifelike, will players form stronger emotional attachments? And what does it mean when games make us feel guilty for our virtual actions? This episode explores the uneasy balance between innovation and control, and what the future of AI may hold for how we interact, connect, and care inside virtual worlds.New episodes of Gaming the System every Thursday.#AIGaming #NPCs #FutureOfGames #GameAI #AICharacters #ProceduralStorytelling #EmergentGameplay 📢 Support the Podcast!Let us know on BlueSky (@gamingthesystem.bsky.social), Instagram (@gamingthesystempodcast) or in the comments on YouTube!

249 AI in Gaming Part 1 – The Co-Pilot Conundrum

In this first of two episodes exploring AI and gaming, Jem, Matt, and Alex discuss the arrival of AI co-pilots — new tools from Microsoft and Google designed to sit within your game and offer real-time hints, walkthroughs, and quest support. The team examine whether these helpers could make games more accessible and inclusive, or if they risk taking over and removing the joy (and sometimes frustration) of discovery. We discuss how AI advice compares to walkthroughs, guides, and playground tips that have long been part of gaming culture, and consider whether convenience might come at the cost of creativity and community engagement. Will using AI co-pilots blur the line between helping and cheating? Or could they usher in lazy game design? If we rely too heavily on AI, do we risk losing access to our own critical thinking? We discuss the very nature of challenge, support and accessibility, before circling back to one key theme, trust. Can we truly depend on AI to provide the right advice when it still generates incorrect answers and risks stripping away the human touch that makes gaming culture so rich? What will we lose if we no longer rely on walkthroughs written with care, the sibling hints shouted across the room and the sense of solving something for yourself? In part two, we will explore what happens when AI begins to influence the characters we meet and the worlds we inhabit.Join the conversation by sharing your thoughts on AI, gaming, and what “help” really means.📢 Support the Podcast!Let us know on BlueSky (@gamingthesystem.bsky.social), Instagram (@gamingthesystempodcast) or in the comments on YouTube!

240 Open World Games – Part 2: The Joy and the Job of Exploration

In this second half of our adventure into open-world games, Jem, Alex, and Matt pick up the conversation with a focus on accessibility, open worlds done wrong, and how to define that "Je ne sais quoi" when it works. We dig into overwhelm, especially for neurodiverse or time-poor gamers. Time to remember that good accessibility features aren’t about “dumbing down” but enhancing play for everyone. Matt unpacks why some open-world games fail — empty maps, repetitive quests, weak writing, and executive-led design — while Alex shares her frustrations with fatigue and grinding that make huge maps feel like chores. We compare the worst offenders to the triumphs, asking what makes games like Elden Ring or The Witcher 3 consistently compelling.Jem brings the stats: if only 14% of open-world players are women, what does that say about how these games are designed and marketed? Are women genuinely less interested, or are the games themselves exclusionary? Finally, we ask the big question: do we prefer games with clear endings or endless play? Will all of this soon be obsolete with the advent of AI supported writing? That's a topic for a future episode! 📢 Support the Podcast!Let us know on BlueSky (@gamingthesystem.bsky.social), Instagram (@gamingthesystempodcast) or in the comments on YouTube!
