Garbage Day: Midnight Movie Mayhem

Zak & Ralph & Nick reexamine movies which have, in one way or another, achieved cult status and try to decide whether or not their cult status is warranted.

  1. 42

    Battlefield Earth

After a bit of catching up, we talk at length about Dutch angles and the usual nonsense associated with any discussion of this film before transitioning into a conversation about the perpetually unsatisfying breadcrumbing that takes place in modern media, and ultimately, how to accept your own death.

  2. 41

Blast! From the Past! (An episode from another show a few years back)

Ralph & Nick & Zak will be back soon to continue the fifth season of Garbage Day: Midnight Movie Mayhem, but to tide over anyone who just wants to listen to two of the voices you're used to hearing, we're unearthing a classic episode of Zak's other movie podcast, But Why Do You Like It? in which our own Nick Rice talks to Zak about their mutual love of 1997's Alien: Resurrection and all its goopy glory fun. The 3 fellas will be back soon with brand new episodes, but for now, enjoy an oldie but (very) goodie!

  3. 40

    Glengarry Glen Ross

We watched a classic this time, gang. It was technically a box office bomb though. So we had a good excuse. Subjects include influence being the THING in our current culture, whether or not the Glengarry guys are "a type of guy", good movies that are hard to like, resetting Instagram suggested content for your mental health, creation in the age of algorithms, etc.

  4. 39

    Airborne

The fellas have a wonderful time talking about one of the best movies about rollerblading from the year 1993. (We really do though. Favorable reviews from all of us. I know you don't believe this right now, but we loved it.)

  5. 38

    Samurai Cop

The fellas have a brief chat about what they've been up to lately before talking about a quintessentially cult movie called Samurai Cop. A film about a wig.

  6. 37

    Batman (1966)

We're back to end our season very shortly before beginning another one! What are seasons anyway? They're lies. Anyway, we talk about the 1966 Batman film based on the television show of the same name.  You may know the franchise. Personally, we are split on whether or not it's good. Zak and Nick say no. Ralph says hell yes. Who will triumph in this belacose battle of Batmen? Etc. Who cares. Enjoy!   IG: @midnight_moviemayhem

  7. 36

    WATCHALONG: Batman (1989)

It's Episode 50! This is a special episode where we watch a movie called "BAT MEN". It was made by a Mr. Tim Burton in the year 1989. That's when it was released. It was probably made before then. Nobody knows. Is this a cult movie? We have conflicting views on it at the show and it is very likely to come up in the next episode. For now, cue up the movie and watch with us. It was a lot of fun.

  8. 35

    Rad

This is a movie about BMX biking! Sort of! We did not like it at all, folks. We do enjoy bikes though. Bikes are neat.   IG: @midnight_moviemayhemPM

  9. 34

    Pumping Iron

We have a little chat about Arnold Schwarzenegger working out and orgasming and orgasming while working out. I'm unclear on it actually. A lot of fluids on this one though. Lotta fluids.   IG: @midnight_moviemayhem

  10. 33

    UPDATE: Clerks!

See you in a couple weeks!

  11. 32

    The Sandlot

We have a chat about 1993's "The Sandlot". We explain why children are inherently vile and untrustworthy creatures, the anatomy of a summer feeling, and why "The Sandlot" is still relevant despite being a movie from 30 years ago which takes place 30 years prior to that...   IG: @midnight_moviemayhem

  12. 31

    Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles

Let's see here. What did we chat about... AH, yes. Turtles who are trained in the art of ninjitsu. What a crazy ride we're all on together. You and me. All the peoples of the universe. Cowabunga, etc.   IG: @midnight_moviemayhem

  13. 30

    The Cable Guy

The fellas talk about Jim Carrey's dark-ish turn as the titular Cable Guy. Topics include physical comedy, personality disorders, and people raised by TV and the internet all acting like knobs.   IG: @midnight_moviemayhem

  14. 29

    No Holds Barred

The boys kick off season 4 with a little chattaroni about the Hulk Hogan/Vince McMahon-penned fever dream "No Holds Barred". Amazingly, no one impersonates JR at any point, even though I'm sure that's what you wanted. "Always leave them wanting more." That's a phrase I made up just now just for this specific situation.   IG: @midnight_moviemayhem

  15. 28

    FREE BONUS: The Crow

We take a quick dive into an absurd fan theory that 'They Live' was inspired by the Mario Bros. arcade game before moving on to the insanity of uh, the entire world? Also, brief discussion of what the future of the show looks like.

  16. 27

    The Crow

The fellas examine Brandon Lee's iconically goth big break/swan song and have some good things to say about it. Some less good things as well. This is the last episode of the season. Not sure when we'll be back but we will be back, and we have many ideas on how to improve the show. See you then! IG: midnight_moviemayhem

  17. 26

    Who Framed Roger Rabbit

The fellas talk about how incredible Who Framed Roger Rabbit is. Not a lot of negativity on this episode. Is it a cult movie? We don't know. We're not actually good at research. Oops.

  18. 25

    Street Fighter

Zak returns! We talk about the Raul Julia's last film, the... technically a movie... Street Fighter. It's fun tbh.

  19. 24

    Dark City

Ralph and Nick are joined by special guest Michael Lastname to discuss one of Michael's personal favorites: 1998's dystopian sci-fi film, Dark City. How many movies is it similar to? A lot. Is it still good? We'll tell you, obviously.

  20. 23

    Showgirls

Zak is MIA this week. Not the musical artist famous for "Paper Planes" and middle fingering the entire earth at the Super Bowl. He's not here, is what I'm saying. So, we have our friend Matt (resident Verhoeven superfan) come on the show to talk to us about boobs.

  21. 22

    They Live

The boys consider the classic 'They Live' and ponder the greatness/weirdness that is the team of Roddy Piper and John Carpenter.

  22. 21

    Anaconda

The fellas (all three this time) talk about the 1997 creature feature Anaconda. Is it bad? Yes. Is it boring? Also yes. Is the snake... kind of not that snake-ish? That's correct. Also, a thought-provoking "Would You Rather?" near the end of the show.

  23. 20

    Masters Of The Universe

Zak and Ralph (not Nick) talk about Master Of The Universe, how good Frank Langella is, who should have played He-Man instead of Dolph Lundgren, and what the cow says.   Instagram: @midnight_moviemayhem

  24. 19

    Office Space

The boys (with special guest Alana) talk about Office Space, the humble brilliance of Mike Judge, and the frustrating realities of work, in general.

  25. 18

    Waterworld

The boys are not entirely thrilled and not entirely disappointed with the famous "flop" that is Waterworld.   IG: @midnight_moviemayhem

  26. 17

    Purple Rain

The boys talk about Purple Rain and why Prince is SO weird (and cool).

  27. 16

    Road House

The fellas talk about Road House and all of the ridiculousness therein.

  28. 15

    Akira

We talk about the immensely influential anime film Akira and how it is equally about global collapse and badass motorcycles. IG: @midnight_moviemayhem

  29. 14

    Silent Night, Deadly Night 2

We finally take on the movie that brought us our name (part of it). We have a long discussion about the film, Metallica, and commodification of art in general. All the usual shit and more and more of it. So much shit for you to consume. Astounding amounts.

  30. 13

    Season 2 Wrap-up

Zak & Ralph discuss the highlights and lowlights of season 2. It's a loosy-goosy episode with many asides. A couple podcast recommendations. Y'know. Whatever. We'll see you next season. Thanks for hanging out with us.

  31. 12

    The Big Lebowski

The fellas return, joined by their good pal Nick Rice, to discuss the always stellar "The Big Lebowski".

  32. 11

    Not On Pause (The Unpoisonating)

Alright, cool. We have regrouped and we're coming back at ya. Picking right up where we left off. See you soon, babies.

  33. 10

    On Pause (We Poisoned Ourselves)

Howdy, folks. Here is a quick explanation of why our next episode (on "The Big Lebowski") and all other episodes will be delayed for a little while.

  34. 9

    Mac & Me

The boys break down the E.T. (the Extra-Terrestrial) rip-off and extended McDonald's/Coke/etc. commercial "MAC [the Mysterious Alien Creature] & Me". Their opinions differ somewhat but one simply cannot argue with the entertainment value of an alien in a bear suit doing a dance routine on the countertop of a McDonald's. 35. 8

    Cobra

We once again welcome our special guest and superfriend, Nick Rice, to discuss a film best known for a very fit gentleman cutting the tip of a slice of pizza with a pair of scissors and very little else. Crime is the disease and Cobra is... another, more different disease... Insta: @midnight_moviemayhem TikTok: @midnightmoviemayhem

  36. 7

    Memento

That's right, folks. We're talking about Memento. The movie that goes backwards. That's abnormal! Instagrams: @midnight_moviemayhem, @goeringer__zak, @largeproduct TikTok: @midnightmoviemayhem

  37. 6

    BONUS: Last Action Hero

This is an episode of one of Zak's other excellent podcasts called 'But Why Do You Like It?' which seemed like a great companion piece to our last episode on Commando. Special guests include Ralph (from this show that you listen to sometimes) and Nick Rice (our friend whomst we like a lot). Enjoy! If you like it consider checking out the rest of the episodes. https://anchor.fm/whydoyoulikeit

  38. 5

    Commando

The fellas explore the ludicrous Arnold Schwarzenegger vehicle, Commando, in all its baffling glory. Instagrams: @midnight_moviemayhem, @goeringer__zak @largeproduct TikTok: @midnightmoviemayhem, @gooringer, @largeproduct

  39. 4

    The Room

The fellas have a little talk about the biggest fish in the shitty movie pond: Tommy Wiseau's The Room. They fail, as many have, to lay out the full breadth of how bad it is but they possibly succeed in laying out the key to the entire movie. Of course, it is food-related. Really fun episode if I may so. Instagrams: @midnight_moviemayhem @goeringer__zak @largeproduct

  40. 3

    American History X

Ralph and Zak discuss the very knotty, not-particularly-well-aged 'American History X' and why one should always avoid having a bad time in the shower with their friends. Instas: @midnight_moviemayhem @goeringer_zak @largeproduct

  41. 2

    Carnosaur

Special guest Noah Riccio joins us to talk about the very underwhelming dinosaur movie from the 90's that is not called 'The Lost World'.   Instas: @largeproduct @goeringer_zak @riccio_raidsagain

  42. 1

    Battle Royale

Today we cover the Japanese mega-hit which took a while to catch on in America due to it being about high school kids murdering each other and coming out shortly after Columbine. That said, it is a hell of a fun time. Spoilers throughout, fyi. Other topics include: professional wrestling.

  43. 0

    Rushmore

Small episode spoiler: Rushmore is a good movie. The fellas like it. If you'd like to know who Max's real life counterpart is, we have the answer. Also includes a, uh, a theme song... Hey! By the way, go to @riccio_raidsagain and hire him if you like the new pod art. We sure do.

  44. -1

    Miami Connection

Zak & Ralph discuss the fairly recently unearthed treasure "Miami Connection". Including drug-dealing ninjas, martial artist rock band playing embarrassingly catchy tunes, biker gangs, all the good stuff kids go for.

  46. -3

    Plan 9 From Outer Space

Ralph & Zak talk about the "worst movie ever" according to... some guy. Sure, it's bad. Does it compare to more recent innovations in bad movie technology? Does the movie deserve its cult status? Is Ed Wood cool? Yeah, actually. He was kinda cool. Kinda not too. People are complicated. 47. -4

    Robocop

Zak & Ralph welcome special guest Matt Ferrett to the pod to talk about the cult sci-fi-horror-satire classic Robocop. Is it good? Well, yes. But we tell you why we think so. That's what podcasting is, silly goose. 48. -5

    The Warriors

Zak and Ralph wrestle with the 1979 cult film The Warriors, and all its eccentricities. Is it still worthy of its cult status? CW: mention of sexual assault, references to racial stereotyping, Ronald Reagan, y'know, all of the worst stuff Instagrams: @midnight_moviemayhem @goeringer__zak @largeproduct --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app

  49. -6

    Tremors

The guys have absolutely nothing bad to say about Tremors. They have plenty to say, but not a bit of bad. 5 stars. Oh, spoilers, I guess. Whatever. Fateful Findings

A peek inside legendary filmmaker Neil Breen's mind causes a predictable amount of distress in our hosts. The kind of fear and confusion that only global thermonuclear war or a single viewing of Fateful Findings could bring about. Here's the clip mentioned in the episode, but we (of course) suggest you watch the whole film: https://youtu.be/dKohD_RLnFw Instagrams: @midnight_moviemayhem @goeringer__zak @largeproduct --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app
