The Fear of the Phone Call: Gex X dating as a teenager
You remember. Nervous. Voice cracking. Maybe saying a silent prayer the mom or dad of your crush didn't answer the phone. Dating as a Gen-Xer back in the day was no joke. Cell phones? No way. text her? with what? No. You had to man up, get her number. DIAL the number and then just gut it out depending on who answered the phone. And 3 way calling? The always present worry in the back of your mind.Gary and Bill take a look at how different dating was for those of us going out back in the 80's and even into the 90's in college. No way to text someone, no way to only call THEM with the entire house knowing you called. And if you DARED honk the horn in the driveway to let her know you were there...odds are, DAD would be the one coming to the door, not your date. The Gen X Men also take a quick look at a pretty historical day for pop music. June 25 1984 Prince drops the "Purple Rain" sound track. Hit after hit, after hit. And in 2009 we lost the icon of icons as Michael Jackson passed away. Two HUGE artists tied to the same date for different reasons. Give us a like, hit that subscribe button and lets know in the comments...did you ever hang up because the girl's father answered the phone instead of her??!#genxpodcast #genxlife #genx #GenxDating #80snostalgia #purplerain

World Cup fans are LOVING America
Oh Hell Yeah! That sound you hear is tons of foreign fans coming to the US...and falling in love with everything. Scottish fans taking over Boston and drinking the city dry. Germany fans making friends with pretty much everyone they come across (JJ Watt, NASA, the ISS!). The US (with Mexico and Canada) are throwing the party and all the naysayers are looking pretty dumb right about now.The guys talk about the crazy reactions to the World Cup, Gary's summer concert series continues with Mumford and Sons and they wrap up the episode with....horse racing?!!? Yeah, it took a turn there at the end.Like, subscribe, spread the word. This episode is...something.#worldcup #genxpodcast #genx #genxlife #FreddyLA7 #mumfordandsons

Episode 38: Schools Out! Summer Jobs, Pool Time and the man who broke "Press Your Luck"
Ah....summer is here....no more school...nothing but long days and sunshine ahead. If you were Gen-X that meant....probably having a summer job. We (mostly) weren't "get sent off to camp" kids. It was finding a ride to the pool, staying out until dark and watching those glorious game shows in the morning as you ate cereal. Gen-X summers were glorious. They weren't filled with planned out activities every. single. week. Today's kids wont ever know the freedom of just...being out and about.About those game shows. Price is Right. $25,000 Pyramid. And of course the "No Whammies!" Press Your Luck. It was June of 1984 when an unemployed ice cream truck driver named Michael Larson broke the game and nearly had CBS in full blown crisis mode. You've gotta see this dude who looks 60 (he was 35) go on a legendary run.Sit back and enjoy revisiting your care free summers of the 1970's and 80's with us...the Gen X Men. #80snostalgia #genx #pressyourluck #schoolsout #summer #gameshow #genxpodcast ***I don't own the video from Press Your Luck. 1986: The Greatest Summer Movie Year Ever?
Top Gun. Ferris Bueller. Aliens. Back to School. Just some of the movies that dominated the summer of 1986. The best summer Gen X had as far as hit after hit? It's up there for sure. Gary is also taking over code enforcement in his small town, so if you want anything built, you better "grease the skids" if you know what we mean. The Amish are on notice! The guys also wonder when the explosion of "a graduate lives there" yard signs around graduation. Everyone (basically) graduates, so what's the big deal? And you need a sign to tell everyone about it? June is also the anniversary of the "Happy Meal" and Gary has a few thoughts since McDonald's came in and put an end to one of his favorite other fast food joints in his childhood. RIP to Burger Chef! That's all for this week. Drop us a note and let us know how many of those summer movies from 1986 are still in your top rotation. And was it one of the Best. Movie. Summers. Episode 36: Gong Gone Wild and THAT Newlywed Answered that Never Aired
Those of us of a certain age remember how wild and wacky 1970's TV could get. Chuck Barris hosting "The Gong Show", Bob Eubanks and "The Newlywed Game." Both created by Barris and both left their marks in the TV history books. This week on the show, Bill and Gary take a look at those two shows with some infamous clips. Paul Reubens (Pee Wee Herman) appearing on The Gong Show (one of his many appearances actually) and giving us a first glimpse at what would become the legendary "Pee Wee Dance". Jaye P Morgan's flashing the studio audience during a "Gene, Gene the Dancing Machine" segment (IYKYK). And it wouldn't be a discussion about The Gong Show without the "Popsicle Twins". An appearance that only aired in the Eastern Time Zone because the NBC censors...well....see for yourself. The Newlywed game was just as unpredictable and we drop a couple of clips. A poor young blond woman who has no idea what rural or urban mean, but she's pretty sure her husband went to the doctor for it. And we toss in THE Newlywed game clip. It's even more raw that the urban legend. And school was let out 50 years ago (when we taped this) for Lee High School in Austin, Texas. Our first sighting of Matthew McConaughey in "Dazed and Confused". It's a great example of how Gen X (even though these would have been late Boomers...oldest Gen X would have been 11 in 1976 and NOT going to Moon Tower parties) would have to find out about parties, meet us and the like. Bill had his own little mini Mason reunion at a recent emmet swimming show. And the more things change, the more they stay the same, just with a little less moshing in the pit these days. (the band sounded great by the way).As Chuckie Baby would say on the Gong Show "The boys were back with more STUFF". Sometimes they feel like the podcast is really just The Gong Show, you just never know where anything is going! Do us a favor, like...subscribe...spread the word. And drop a comment below. Episode 35: Bringing back the Hut...and my teacher did WHAT?!?
Oh boy, the #80snostalgia runs deep in this week's episode. Pizza Hut is coming back in a big way bringing back the red and white checkered table cloths, those amazing red cups and the SALAD BAR! The guys can't wait to drop a few quarters into the Ms Pac Man table top or play any of the classic 80's hits on the jukebox (look it up Gen Z) while waiting for their pan pizza to cook. But only if the Hut goes back to their original recipe. Pizza Hut lunch runs were a staple for Bill in high school because his after lunch government teacher was....well....drinking on the job. This takes the guys down a long and winding road of drinking teachers, flirting teachers, odd teacher behavior and car pools in the flat bed?!? You wont want to miss the crazy stories of Gary staying over (with other kids) not once, but TWICE at teacher's houses. Would never happen today!#drunkteacher #genxpodcast #pizzahut #genx #teacher

The EMT goes to the ER...not how the day was planned
Well this was a surprise! Co-host Gary ended up in the hospital this week but at the last second was saved from being gutted open like a fish! It's the harrowing adventure of an EMT ending up on the other side of a emergency room visit, a transfer of hospitals and ultimately good news. But what does it say of the hospitals and health care in the US? Especially in smaller cities and towns like Belfast? The boys break down the behind the scenes look at how Gary's 48 hour hospital stay went and how it was eerily similar to Bill's surgery 5 years ago. Also...are we just going to pretend certain entities are just trying to scare us into another virus summer? The guys are NOT having the fear mongering over the latest virus. (And they explain why they will never do cruises!)Thankful Gary is still with us...and glad those CT scans can sometimes fix issues on their own!#ERvisit #genxpodcast #genx #ctscan #hantavirus #cruise #hospital

Episode 33 goes under the hood of a PR nightmare as crisis communications expert Jonathan Grella joins the Gen X Men to break down the growing Mike Vrabel–Dianna Russini story and why the PR handling has become such a major talking point online. How do stories like this spiral? What should teams, media personalities, and public figures actually do when controversy hits? And in the social media age…is it even possible to control the narrative anymore?Jonathan Grella has advised Fortune 500 companies, government leaders, and major organizations during high-pressure moments, and he gives us a behind-the-scenes look at how modern crisis management really works. We also dive into:🏈 The role of sports media in modern controversies📱 How Twitter/X changes the speed of PR disasters🎙️ Why “no comment” can sometimes make things WORSE📰 The difference between reporting, rumor, and narrative-building👀 What the public gets wrong about crisis communicationsWe also hit on the JP Morgan fake lawsuit and how the Eric Swalwell story was a DC one just waiting to explode...and if there are more coming. 5 years after chemo, this one is personal
Bill got good news this week as his 5 year cancer check up came back clean. His oncologist (the fantastic Dr Wadlow) is "releasing him back into the wild". The Gen-X men talk about cancer, the journey from chemo to clean scans and how weird it is to be "set free". Anyone who has been through it themselves or seen someone else deal with chemo, etc will appreciate the humor, the fear, the "what now" aspect of the conversation. It's real. It's raw sometimes funny. But it isn't all about the cancer! the Gen-X men break down the total disaster that was "New Coke" which dropped 41 years ago today (April 23, 1985) and whether it was marketing genius...or just a gaffe that actually turned out as a home run for the Coke brand. And also a shout out to Dr Pepper Zero Blackberry. We love the stuff. RIP to Sid Krofft. Hello to Aadam Jacobs 10000 concert tapes, and do we really need Top Gun 3?
It was a hell of a run, but Sid Krofft passed away recently, well into his 90's. You Gen Xers will remember Sid and his brother Marty basically making Saturday mornings a wild journey of our youth. "Land of the Lost", "H.R. Pufnstuf" "Bugaloos" "Electra Woman and Dyna Girl" among the shows many of us sat down and consumed while eating sugary cereal. A fantastic time to be alive! As former college radio disc jockeys, Bill and Gary were impressed with Aadam Jacobs (yes, that is how he spells Aadam) amazing concert tapes. 10,000 tapes of live shows all around Chicago. 1989 Nirvana, 2 years before "Nevermind" came out. The Bangles in 1984. So many shows and bands you've heard of...and some you haven't (looking at you Cat Butt). Finally it was announced they are working on a script for Top Gun 3. The questions we have...why? who? what? Didn't we close the book on Maverick in 2022? I know people will disagree, but do we need Top Gun 3?#SidandMartyKrofft #landofthelost #HRPufnstuf #70snostalgia #genxpodcast #genx #AadamJacobs #concerttapes #topgun3 #tomcruise #topgunmaverick #saturdaymorningcartoons

Episode 29 Moon and Murmurs
Bill and Gary break down the Artemis II heading back to earth and whether or not they will bring word from the beyond of more alien tech. Are the people denying space off their rockers? Or is it another conspiracy the government is behind (think MK Ultra, etc). Next, what weapon technology that saved the US airman is coming next? If the US can detect a heart beat from miles away....what else do they have at their disposal? In and out getting Maduro without any casualties? There has to be MORE out there. Fool Moon Rising
Bill and Gary are back with another round of the Gen X Men PodcastEpisode 28 leans into the past, the present, and the strange space in between. We kick things off with some all-time April Fools’ classics — Syd Finch, spaghetti trees, and Taco Bell “buying” the Liberty Bell — the kind of stories that blur the line between ridiculous and believable. Then we look up again. With Artemis II set to take humans back around the Moon, it brings back something a lot of us haven’t thought about in a while — what it felt like to watch space launches as kids… and how quickly that feeling changed.Because we also remember Challenger.Where we were. What we saw. And how that moment stuck with us in ways we didn’t fully understand at the time. And somewhere along the way, we ask a strange question:Why do some people still think it wasn’t real? What does that say about how we process big, shared moments? This episode is part nostalgia, part space talk, part “how did we get here?”🎧 Inside Episode 28:The greatest April Fools’ hoaxes everArtemis II and the return to the MoonThe Challenger explosion and generational memoryWhy conspiracy theories take holdThe blurry line between truth, media, and memoryFrom jokes… to shock… to going back to the Moon.—If you remember where you were that day, this one’s for you.

Episode 27: The Truth is Here
Episode 27: The Truth is HERE… 👽What if disclosure isn’t coming… because it’s already started? We’re talking Aliens.gov, the slow drip of information, and whether the government is finally preparing people for something bigger. If you’ve been paying attention, this lines up exactly with what we said back in Episode 15. Coincidence… or were the signs already there? Then this episode takes a hard turn into one of the strangest stories you’ll hear. The case of Dayton Webber. A quadriplegic. A murder. And somehow… a drive to Charlottesville, Virginia. The details don’t just sound unbelievable, they don’t seem possible. So what actually happened? And then we finish with something completely different, but just as interesting. The Breakfast Club. Could you even make that movie today? Would it get crushed? Rewritten? Completely flipped? Five kids in detention doesn’t look the same in 2026, and honestly… maybe it shouldn’t.Aliens. A case that makes no sense. And a classic movie that might not survive today’s world. This episode goes everywhere… and somehow it all works.#Aliens #UFO #Disclosure #AliensGov #UAP #Conspiracy #TrueCrime #DaytonWebber #Charlottesville #BreakfastClub #80sMovies #PopCulture #Podcast #TheTruthIsOutThere #Episode27

The Sinatra Story
Welcome to yet another Gen X Men podcast. Bill and Gary have a full look back at some crazy stories from the 1990s. They start off with their coverage of the Gulf War (1991) when Bill's mom gave them the head's up it was starting that night in January of 91. Their "coverage" at WGMU when they fooled a visiting professor AND the school's Program Board into thinking Gary was actually in Kuwait helping the British Media. Next, they get to 1994 and Bill meeting the legendary Frank Sinatra---and why Frank was pissed that night at the Jefferson Hotel. And also more interested in Bill's then-girlfriend Marie more than he was in talking to Bill. And drunker than the college kids. Finally they close things out with the memories of first cars, breaking down (and fixing those cars) and Gary's son getting his first car na d how it is very different than when GEN X was getting a license to drive. Survivor is doing its 50th season and Bill and Gary were on the ground floor when the memo came out announcing the new show (but admit, they stopped watching years ago). And with the coming reboot of "The Rockford Files" the guys debate what makes a good reboot and why CBS can't seem to get enough of them. Gary and Bill are back and speaking of back....Bill goes back to school to guest lecture in a couple of classes at George Mason. That takes the guys down a road of note taking, typing and how general work flow has changed since the high and school and college days of their youth. A couple of great stories on broadcasting games over telephone lines and how long would a phone "ring" before the phone company cut it off? The Olympics are in full swing and the Gen X Men look back at the Miracle on Ice and how well Al Michaels did in letting the moment breath. We miss the old national rivalries that just don't seem to be around anymore. Finally, the guys talk women's flag football...is it the next big NCAA sport? Episode 21: We're Legal!
Happy 21st episode! Do you remember turning 21 as a GenXer? Bill and Gary relive their youth, from first tastes of alcohol, to parties gone wrong and those legit Fake ID's from back in the day. Vodka slupree's were definitely a thing in high school and who can forger the tasty wine coolers (for the chicks of course...never for us dudes, right?!?!). The guys talk about the rougher edge of booze back then (Mad Dog, Boone's Farm, Everclear) and take a moment for a hat tip to the passing of James van der Beek. Episode 20: Flipping topics--Super Bowl, Tecmo Bowl, Olympics, Washington Post and Epstein.
The boys are back (thanks Thin Lizzy) and this week is a roller coaster of topics. They talk Super Bowl and how Boston has dominated sports over the last quarter century (and how annoying that is). The 37th anniversary of the greatest football franchise ever (no, not "Madden") and how it made "house rules" a thing. Bill admits the Olympics sort of snuck up on him and Gary is excited about one new event on the schedule this year. They lament the end of the Washington Post sports section but question why people think they have the right to demand what billionaires do with their own money. Bill and Gary reflect on one of the greatest late night radio shows ever and how Joe Rogan finds a way to do 3 hour podcasts when everyone seems to have such a short attention span. Episode 19 Shovel Ready
Gary and Bill are back! Bill recounts his travel from Providence after nearly making the flight out on Saturday before the storm. The guys talk about the piles of snow and what exactly are you suppose to do when it is growing and growing and growing. Bill shouts out Mason fan Chris D. for taking the reins and making the drive the entire way from Rhode Island to DC. Gary's anxiety was on full display as he watched Alex Honnold free solo up the side of a building. Fear of heights aside, it was a wild watch! (although, we still aren't sure why Seth Rollins was on the broadcast, other than cross promotion). Bill's special guest "canceled" because of her hair (we have the text), but otherwise another fantastic episode. Bill's just hoping he can get through one more travel weekend without an issue! Winter is coming....Gary and Bill discuss the impeding winter storm coming to the East Coast and how Bill is planning on getting home from Rhode Island in the event of a canceled flight. Would you stick it out in a hotel? Or make the drive from Providence Rhode Island back to the DC area? Why older people like to use "ER Uber" when things get dicey. And if you need something to watch while you are snowed in after the NFL games...how about the #starsearch reboot on Netflix? The guys look back at the original "Star Search" and stumble across a comedian winner who is now in jail for a not so funny reason. It's the 106th anniversary of the 18th amendment (Prohibition). Did you grow up with "Blue Laws"? Do you remember locked coolers at the 7-11 after midnight? They talk the latest college basketball scandal as well. Don't you have to get the top guys on the team, not the back ups? NIL doesn't seem to stop the flow of illegal point shaving at the lower levels. The latest video from Minnesota with a citizen "stop and frisk" that could have gone REALLY wrong. Episode 16: Road Trippin'
Gary and Bill are back with Episode 16. A tribute to road trips when we were growing up X. Gary's parents loved to make stops on trips, while Bill's dad was a no nonsense "no time for stops" type. 11 people, 1 bathroom at Christmas? check. Flat tire on the Jersey turnpike in the rain? Check. First flights not until we were in our 20's? Check! Nobody back in the day was flying for vacation...it was way cheaper to drive! (and pack your sandwiches) And January 8th is Elvis' birthday. Elvis is more of a boomer icon, but how would he have aged into the 80's with all the heavy metal, new wave, etc? And why no duets? The guys break down the King being relevant into the future as well. A quick hat tip to David Bowie, also born on January 8th, and to Gary's mom, also a January 8th baby! Gary reviews the "Heart" and "Starship" concert (hint: grandma can still rock it!). Bill recalls seeing the Osmond's when he was barely 5 and then bought an older woman tickets to Hall and Oates so she would drive him to the show back in 1984. They talk they most seen and best concert experiences and Christmas songs all seem to follow the one main formula. They say a fond farewell to Rob Reiner and Buck Rodgers (RIP Gil Gerard) and Gary talks about how Erin Gray made boys of a certain age take notice. Episode 9: Gen-X Myths, Facts or Fiction?
Episode 9 of the Gen-X Men podcast has Bill and Gary discussing all those celebrity rumors, playground myths and weird things your mom told you about why you couldn't swim after eating. They dive into Ozzy biting the bat (and earlier...DOVES!), Richard Gere and the gerbil, Gene Simmons and a cow tongue? What? and lots of other lost memories from the Gen-X vault. Fact or Fiction all episode long. Was Mr Rogers a marine? Did Mikey die from Pop Rocks and Coke? Or maybe is was the LSD tabs kids were getting at playgrounds all over the country. Don't swallow gum or watermelon seeds and if you do, you better not swim until you wait 30 minutes. If you don't you are clearly not using the 10% of your brain. Just don't walk up in a bathtub full of ice and a missing kidney......IYKYK. #GenX #ozzyosbourne #mythsvsfacts #80snostalgia

Remembrance, Repetition & Rewriting History
Bill and Gary are back with another episode! It's episode 8 and despite being a tad under the weather, the guys talk about Veteran's Day and how Gen X was lucky not to have a generational draft, why cookie cutter neighborhoods are the worst and why Hollywood take liberties when telling great stories. Bill looks at the newest trailer for the Michael Jackson upcoming film and the guys lament the lack of "blockbuster" films coming out of Hollywood. Scream 7? Scary Movie 6? Why? Gary falls asleep to Seinfeld and Bill just finds the entire show unlikable. Get your shoulder pads out, toss on some leg warmers for the cold and join the boys for another episode!

Episode 7: Tom Brady clones his dog? Chatgpt doesn't know the year and we have our first guest.
The Gen X Men are back, and this week Bill and Gary are bringing some serious energy — because for the first time on the show, they’ve got a guest joining them at the table. The guys welcome none other than TJ Rives (you may know him as @BucSidelineGuy, the longtime sideline voice on the Tampa Bay Buccaneers broadcast network, SiriusXM, and a man who has seen more NFL sidelines than most of us have seen lawn chairs). TJ jumps in for a wide-ranging conversation that hits everything from sports to pop culture to the slow existential crisis Gen Xers feel every time one of our favorite movies turns Forty-freaking-years old.The episode kicks off with TJ giving an update on Steinbrenner High School (yes, that's a thing) before diving into the NFL trade deadline which is always part strategy, part chaos, and part “why did THAT team do THAT?” TJ gives some inside perspective on how front offices think, which teams are actually all-in, and why deadlines in professional sports always seem to bring out equal parts brilliance and panic. Next up...if Tom Brady comes up in conversation, well, you have to talk the latest Brady news. He cloned his dog. Or so is the rumor. So what is the REAL motive for Brady? Is this the next TB12 outgrowth? Cloning? (and yes, he is more handsome now than he was 10 years ago. Facts.)Next up is the guys lamenting the loss of college sports innocence and why it feels weird to have failed G Leaguers going back to college for a buck (or 100,000 of them). This isn't the college sports of our youth. And because time is a cruel and hilarious prank, the group reflects on hitting anniversaries of movies from our childhood and realizing they’re approaching 40th and 50th anniversaries. Ghostbusters. Back to the Future. Caddyshack. Time moves on even if Gary insists he is still 35. It’s not that we’re getting older — it’s that the calendar is clearly broken. In the final segment, Bill and Gary take a brief and necessary moment to address the glitch in the simulation: Duck.AI recently insisted Jason Kelce is dead, and Chatgpt completely forgot what year it is. The guys break down what happened, why AI sometimes hallucinate facts, and how the machines may not be taking over just yet — though they might need a calendar.

Episode 5: McFly, where's the guitar McFly?
The Back to the Future guitar is missing...which leads Bill and Gary to discuss other movie/TV props and what happened to them. The last original Jaws? The Ark from Indiana Jones? The Goonies Map? the boys will get you updated on all of those. And remember the MTV 1989 contest "Steal the Batmobile?" Well teenage Gary had a front row seat to the winner and how it ended (poorly) for a VCU student back in the day. Be sure to like and subscribe below! #genx #BTTF #jaws #80snostalgia #movieprops

The guys give their view of where AI is heading, how it should be used and why they don't ever trust Siri or Alexa. All on the podcast no one asked for, but we are doing anyway.
