The Myth of Sisyphus by Albert Camus: Summary & Analysis Audiobook by Eric Williams
https://thebookvoice.com/podcasts/audiobook/52/ to download full audiobooks of your choice for free. Title: The Myth of Sisyphus by Albert Camus: Summary & Analysis Author: Eric Williams Narrator: Kevin Theis Format: Unabridged Length: 30 mins Language: English Release date: 03-15-17 Publisher: Eric Williams Ratings: 3.5 of 5 out of 30 votes Genres: Classics, Nonfiction Publisher's Summary: This is a summary and analysis of "The Myth of Sisyphus". "The Myth of Sisyphus" is a 1942 philosophical essay by Albert Camus. The English translation by Justin O'Brien was first published in 1955. In the essay, Camus introduces his philosophy of the absurd: man's futile search for meaning, unity, and clarity in the face of an unintelligible world devoid of God and eternal truths or values. Does the realization of the absurd require suicide? Camus answers: "No. It requires revolt." He then outlines several approaches to the absurd life. The final chapter compares the absurdity of man's life with the situation of Sisyphus, a figure of Greek mythology who was condemned to repeat forever the same meaningless task of pushing a boulder up a mountain, only to see it roll down again. The essay concludes, "The struggle itself [...] is enough to fill a man's heart. One must imagine Sisyphus happy." The work can be seen in relation to other absurdist works by Camus: the novel The Stranger (1942), the plays The Misunderstanding (1942) and Caligula (1944), and especially the essay "The Rebel" (1951).

Eugenics and Other Evils Audiobook by G. K. Chesterton
https://thebookvoice.com/podcasts/audiobook/52/ to download full audiobooks of your choice for free. Title: Eugenics and Other Evils Author: G. K. Chesterton Narrator: Derek Perkins Format: Unabridged Length: 4 hrs and 50 mins Language: English Release date: 01-23-18 Publisher: Blackstone Audio, Inc. Genres: Classics, Nonfiction Publisher's Summary: During the first three decades of the 20th century, eugenics, the scientific control of human breeding, was a popular cause within enlightened and progressive segments of the English-speaking world. The New York Times eagerly supported it, gushing about the wonderful "new science." Prominent scientists, such as the plant biologist Luther Burbank, were among its most enthusiastic supporters. And the Carnegie and Rockefeller foundations generously funded eugenic research intended to distinguish the "fit" from the "unfit." This prophetic volume counters the intellectual nihilism of Nietzsche, while simultaneously rebuking Western notions of progress - biological or otherwise. Chesterton expands his criticism of eugenics into what he calls "a more general criticism of the modern craze for scientific officialism and strict social organization."

Woman and Her Secret Passions Audiobook by Dr. Robert Wakely
https://thebookvoice.com/podcasts/audiobook/52/ to download full audiobooks of your choice for free. Title: Woman and Her Secret Passions Subtitle: Expanded Author: Dr. Robert Wakely Narrator: Brian V. Hunt Format: Unabridged Length: 2 hrs and 48 mins Language: English Release date: 12-22-17 Publisher: Click Shock LLC Ratings: 2 of 5 out of 1 votes Genres: Classics, Nonfiction Publisher's Summary: As a historical document, this audiobook is far more entertaining than it has a right to be. It's a wonderful, funny, sad peek into the emotional agonies of a sexual era that is happily past. Or is it? You won't know quite whether to laugh, cry, or thank Dr. Wakely for his almost criminally Victorian little 1846 book whose original, full title is: "Woman and Her Secret Passions Containing an Exact Description of the Female Organs of Generation, Their Uses and Abuses, Together with a Detailed Account of the Causes and the Cure of the Solitary Vice". If that doesn't have you panting breathlessly, some of the good doctor's rather indiscreet patient stories will. Masturbation is the evil he seeks to cure, and based on the original cover, you'd be forgiven for assuming it was a best seller. We don't know. Despite stating that it was "for sale by all booksellers", one wonders who would have the nerve to make such a purchase in 1846. Men could have purchased it for the racy stories, and when you first dive in, you might think it was written for precisely that purpose. But Doc Wakely should be given at least the credit for recognizing that the clitoris exists, that it was the "seat of female pleasure" (if parenthetically he felt it was only that when coupled in blissful matrimony), and that he does not condemn female pleasure outright. He does give a fairly good account of the uses of the "female organs of generation", but the abuses he blames for all manner of physical, emotional, and psychological ills. In men, he is certain beyond doubt that masturbation leads to IMPOTENCE (his capitalization). He tells young women not to lie in bed until late morning "...because of the fatal habits to which it sometimes gives rise, and which it fosters to a most alarming degree." Of a pair of fun-loving newlyweds, he remarks upon their reaching a point of asexual relations: "For a few days they enjoyed great pleasure, but as they continued this course week after week, they exhausted the flame of pleasure. To speak plain English, they wasted their seminal fluid too lavishly - they drained their bodies of that precious liquid, which is the cause of beauty, youth, and love." Of another patient whom he examines, he states, "I also discovered that she was finely formed for giving the highest pleasure to a companion equally amorous with herself." Oh doctor!

I cannot shape the truth; I know of no such thing as paring off the rough edges of a doctrine. John Knox's gospel is my gospel. That which thundered through Scotland must thunder through England again." (C. H. Spurgeon) A Defense of Calvinism is a classic text by Charles H. Spurgeon. This rendition is beautifully narrated by Bryan Nyman.

Economic Consequences of the Peace Audiobook by John Maynard Keynes
https://thebookvoice.com/podcasts/audiobook/52/ to download full audiobooks of your choice for free. Title: Economic Consequences of the Peace Author: John Maynard Keynes Narrator: Robert Bethune Format: Unabridged Length: 7 hrs and 58 mins Language: English Release date: 12-20-17 Publisher: Freshwater Seas Genres: Classics, Nonfiction Publisher's Summary: John Maynard Keynes died in 1946, but his name is still one to conjure with in economics and politics worldwide. Although his contributions to economic theory established and maintain his fame, he also - particularly at the time in his life when he wrote the present book, Economic Consequences of the Peace - showed a flair for practical political work on the basis of economics in his work with the Royal Commission on Indian Currency and Finance. At the outbreak of World War I, he began working with the British Treasury; in January 1915 he took up an official position there. At the end of the war he was appointed as the British Treasury's representative to the Versailles Peace Conference. His experiences at the Conference formed the basis of this book. In short, he was so disgusted with the resulting treaty that he resigned his post. This is not a theoretical text. It is a data-driven study of the consequences that must follow if the provisions of the Treaty of Versailles were put into full effect. To the extent that they were, Keynes was largely proven right; to the extent that they were ignored, delayed, or abrogated altogether, Keynes was also proven right: such measures were never put in practice because they were impossible. Beyond practical economics and politics, his book is also a clear call for intelligent magnanimity in politics, both in peace and in war. His vision is of a world at peace in which the prosperity of each nation contributes to the prosperity of all people. He clearly demonstrates the practical working of that vision in his analysis of the disasters that would happen if the effort to rebuild war-torn Europe proceeded on a punitive basis versus the positive results of proceeding on a basis not of enmity, but of equity. In order to avoid forcing the listener to listen to long recitations of numeric tables, there are small abridgements at a few points in the book. However, no substantial text has been removed and Keynes' arguments and methods of analysis remain intact. This is economics; there are some places where the numerical facts get a little dense, but Keynes succeeds in keeping his argument clear even when the going gets heavy. Enjoy!

Dont Save Anything Audiobook by James Salter, Kay Eldredge Salter - preface

Title: Dont Save Anything Subtitle: Uncollected Essays, Articles, and Profiles Author: James Salter, Kay Eldredge Salter - preface Narrator: Michael Kramer Format: Unabridged Length: 9 hrs and 55 mins Language: English Release date: 11-14-17 Publisher: Blackstone Audio, Inc. Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 1 votes Genres: Classics, Nonfiction Publisher's Summary: James Salter was a master. One of the greatest writers of American sentences in our literary history, his acute and glimmering portrayals of characters are built with a restrained and poetic style. The author of many memorable works of fiction - including Dusk, and Other Stories, which won the PEN/Faulkner Award - he is also celebrated for his memoirs and many nonfiction essays. In her preface, Kay Salter writes, "Don't Save Anything is a volume of the best of Jim's nonfiction - articles published but never collected in one place until now. Though those many boxes were overflowing with papers, in the end it's not really a matter of quantity. These pieces reveal some of the breadth and depth of Jim's endless interest in the world and the people in it.... One of the greatest pleasures in writing nonfiction is the writer's feeling of exploration, of learning about things he doesn't know, of finding out by reading and observing and asking questions, and then writing it down. That's what you'll find here." This collection gathers his thoughts on writing and profiles of famous writers, observations of the changing American military life, evocations of Aspen winters, musings on mountain climbing and skiing, and tales of travels to Europe and Asia which first appeared in the New Yorker, Esquire, People magazine, Conde Nast Traveler, the Aspen Times, and many other publications.

Publications Ratings: 5 of 5 out of 12 votes Genres: Classics, Nonfiction Publisher's Summary: Many of the world's leaders have turned to Niccolo Machiavelli's The Art of War as a guide to the fundamentals of war, including Frederick the Great, Napoleon, as well as countless other military leaders. Limited warfare is one of the philosophies promoted in this work. Machiavelli believed that military conflict should be a last resort and should only be considered when diplomacy fails. He was also of the belief that society could only remain stable and secure with a strong state military. During the Renaissance era, Niccolo Machiavelli was an Italian diplomat, philosopher, historian, and politician. During his career, Machiavelli spent many years as a senior official in the Florentine Republic, working in diplomatic and in military affairs, but it was The Art of War that gained him the most recognition. During his lifetime, Niccolo Machiavelli was highly critical of corruption in politics, which is evident in much of his work.

Title: The Age of Fable Subtitle: Bulfinchs Mythology, Book 1 Author: Thomas Bulfinch Narrator: Mary Woods Format: Unabridged Length: 13 hrs and 2 mins Language: English Release date: 08-01-17 Publisher: Blackstone Audio, Inc. Genres: Classics, Nonfiction Publisher's Summary: Many of the world's travails may be traced to the displacement of mythology by the age of science. Knowledge today is often deemed useful only if it enlarges our possessions or raises our station in society. If instead the criterion were to make us happier and more virtuous, mythology would have retained its proper place in society. The Age of Fable is Thomas Bulfinch's brilliant reconstruction of the ancient myths and legends that form the backbone of Western culture. Drawn from a variety of classic sources, including Ovid's Metamorphoses, Egyptian myths, Eastern mythology, and Hindu, Norse, and Celtic works, these selections form a remarkable tapestry of human endeavor: dreams, illusions, adventures, and loves. Included are the legends of Cupid and Psyche, Venus and Adonis, Hero and Leander, Hercules, and many others.

Title: Propaganda Author: Mark Crispin Miller - introduction, Edward Bernays Narrator: Grover Gardner Format: Unabridged Length: 4 hrs and 42 mins Language: English Release date: 07-25-17 Publisher: Blackstone Audio, Inc. Ratings: 4.5 of 5 out of 44 votes Genres: Classics, Nonfiction Publisher's Summary: "The conscious and intelligent manipulation of the organized habits and opinions of the masses is an important element in democratic society. Those who manipulate this unseen mechanism of society constitute an invisible government which is the true ruling power of our country." (Edward Bernays) A seminal and controversial figure in the history of political thought and public relations, Edward Bernays pioneered the scientific technique of shaping and manipulating public opinion, which he famously dubbed the "engineering of consent". During World War I, he was an integral part of the US Committee on Public Information, or CPI, a powerful propaganda apparatus that was mobilized to package, advertise, and sell the war to the American people as one that would "Make the World Safe for Democracy". The CPI became the blueprint for the marketing strategies of future wars. Bernays applied the techniques he had learned in the CPI and, incorporating some of the ideas of Walter Lipmann, became an outspoken proponent of propaganda as a tool for democratic and corporate manipulation of the population. His 1928 bombshell, Propaganda, lays out his eerily prescient vision for using propaganda to regiment the collective mind in a variety of areas, including government, politics, art, science, and education. To listen to this book today is to frightfully comprehend what our contemporary institutions of government and business have become in regard to the organized manipulation of the masses.

Title: De Profundis Author: Oscar Wilde Narrator: David McCallion Format: Unabridged Length: 1 hr and 41 mins Language: English Release date: 07-19-17 Publisher: A.R.N. Publications Ratings: 5 of 5 out of 13 votes Genres: Classics, Nonfiction Publisher's Summary: At its heart, De Profundis is a love letter and is better known as the De Profundis papers. Written in 1897, while Oscar Wilde was imprisoned in Reading Gaol, De Profundis would become one of his best-known works. The papers include Wilde's account of living a lavish lifestyle and his relationship with Lord Alfred Douglas, both of which he credited for his eventual downfall and imprisonment. The second half of the papers is Wilde's account of prison life and his spiritual awakening. In 1891, Oscar Wilde began an intimate relationship with the dashing but reckless Lord Alfred Douglas. Although both families disapproved of the relationship, Alfred's family was especially against it. When threats failed to yield the results he was looking for, Alfred's father, the Marquess of Queensberry, began to publicly attack Wilde, even as the author was reaching the peak of his career. Ultimately, Oscar Wilde would make the mistake of bringing a lawsuit against the nobleman that would backfire with a charge of indecent acts, resulting in a prison sentence. De Profundis is an interesting firsthand account of the most tremulous years of Wilde's life.

Publications Ratings: 5 of 5 out of 14 votes Genres: Classics, Nonfiction Publisher's Summary: Published in 1797, the Critique of Pure Reason is considered to be one of the foremost philosophical works ever written. In the Critique of Pure Reason, Immanuel Kant explores the foundation of human knowledge and its limits, as well as man's ability to engage in metaphysics. The Critique builds on the works of famous philosophers such as John Locke and David Hume, but Kant takes their ideas further. Kant delves into new ideas concerning time and space and how human knowledge relates to cause and effect. Kant's ideas were unique for his time in that he believed that human knowledge did not conform to objects but that objects conformed to human knowledge. It was also Kant's view that humans were born with some prior knowledge that might also be termed intuition and that additional knowledge was gained through life experience. Born in 1724, Immanuel Kant was a German philosopher who is considered by many to be an important contributor to modern philosophical thought. The basics of Kant's beliefs were that the human mind was responsible for creating the structure of one's experiences.

Darwin's work is the cornerstone of the theory of evolution and is as important today as it was when it was released nearly 160 years ago. Few published works have had the kind of impact on society as Origin of Species. Not only did Darwin's work change how the world viewed human origins but it had a tremendous impact on other areas of human society, including theology and philosophy. In Origin of Species, Darwin presents his well-documented findings, supporting the concept that all life evolved over time through a process of natural selection and survival of the fittest. Today, his theories are the foundation of the life sciences and after 20 years of research concluded by analogy that all life evolved from a common ancestor. Title: Anti-Intellectualism in American Life Author: Richard Hofstadter Narrator: Adam Verner Format: Unabridged Length: 16 hrs and 32 mins Language: English Release date: 04-18-17 Publisher: Tantor Audio Ratings: 4.5 of 5 out of 38 votes Genres: Classics, Nonfiction Publisher's Summary: Winner of the 1964 Pulitzer Prize in Non-Fiction. This book throws light on many features of the American character. Its concern is not merely to portray the scorners of intellect in American life, but to say something about what the intellectual is, and can be, as a force in a democratic society. Critic Reviews: "As Mr. Hofstadter unfolds the fascinating story, it is no crude battle of eggheads and fatheads. It is a rich, complex, shifting picture of the life of the mind in a society dominated by the ideal of practical success." (Robert Peel, Christian Science Monitor)

During that period he observed and recorded the effect of the industrial revolution on the labor market and the subsequent condition of what became the working class of England. While it is widely argued that the industrial revolution improved the standard of living for the general population, Engels' observations, corroborated by his considerable research into official reports by various government-appointed commissions, reveal that in 1845, the working class was still paying a heavy toll for England's industrial rise.

Title: An Enquiry Concerning Human Understanding Author: David Hume Narrator: Alastair Cameron Format: Unabridged Length: 5 hrs and 7 mins Language: English Release date: 03-09-17 Publisher: A.R.N. Publications Ratings: 4.5 of 5 out of 11 votes Genres: Classics, Nonfiction Publisher's Summary: David Hume's An Enquiry Concerning Human Understanding was considered to be one of the most contentious works of its time. Hume's view of reasoning through experience and "sophistry and illusion" in reference to religiously inspired fantasy was extremely controversial in the 18th century. In today's climate of science denial, Hume's work is still relevant and just as controversial. The Enquiry delves into human understanding and the physical world, highlighting just how little man understands reality, concluding that human understanding is limited to experience and instinct. Hume's rational skepticism offers food for thought on human experience and a basis for scientific understanding aimed at liberating man from superstitious religions. His work is the first of its kind to take the focus off religion and put it on the physical world. David Hume's Enquiry Concerning Human Understanding is still considered to be one of the best introductions to the study of philosophy.

Title: The Transcendentalist Author: Ralph Waldo Emerson Narrator: Eddie Frierson Format: Unabridged Length: 56 mins Language: English Release date: 09-29-16 Publisher: MSAC Philosophy Group Ratings: 4.5 of 5 out of 18 votes Genres: Classics, Nonfiction Publisher's Summary: Ralph Waldo Emerson is a paradoxical figure in American society. He represents the very height of individualism and blazing one's own path, but during his lifetime his views were considered so radical that Harvard College, despite Emerson being an honored student there, banned him from speaking for some three decades after he gave his 1838 speech on transcendentalism. Today, of course, Emerson is heralded as one of the great Americans of the 19th century. Harvard even has a building named after him. Emerson gives evidence to the well-known quip that "conservatives are people who worship dead radicals." The following essay is a timeless piece of writing, and though penned a century and a half ago, it still conveys valuable insights that have as much relevance today as they did when Emerson first wrote them.

Two Treatises of Government Audiobook by John Locke

Title: Two Treatises of Government Author: John Locke Narrator: Alastair Cameron Format: Unabridged Length: 10 hrs and 27 mins Language: English Release date: 08-03-16 Publisher: A.R.N. Publications Ratings: 4.5 of 5 out of 24 votes Genres: Classics, Nonfiction Publisher's Summary: Two Treatises of Government is a work of political philosophy that outlined a concept foreign to the American people who, at the time, were still under English monarchy. This concept is what we now call democracy and advocated for a system in which all people were afforded rights to freedom and property ownership. The book was intended to push forward the ideas on contract theory and natural rights. Thomas Jefferson borrowed many of the ideas of Two Treatises of Government while writing the Declaration of Independence. The first treatise was an attack on the contemporary religious philosopher at that time, Sir Robert Filmer. Locke argues that the theory of Adam, being ordained through God to have dominion over all people of the earth, was absurd. The theory of monarchs being direct descendants of Adam, therefore having a right to the throne, could not possibly be proven as the lineage was not able to be traced. In the second treatise, Locke engaged in a political discussion regarding power, government, and reason. He argues that the state of nature, a theory of the time that all humans were born with in a condition of absolute freedom and equality, was an idea that government systems needed to be built upon. Based on this theory, Locke develops a government that guarantees three basic rights to all people - life, liberty, and property.

Ratings: 4.5 of 5 out of 15 votes Genres: Classics, Nonfiction Publisher's Summary: Published in 1961, the year of Frantz Fanon's death, The Wretched of the Earth is both a powerful analysis of the psychological effects of colonization and a rallying cry for violent uprising and independence. The book rejects colonial assumptions that the people of colonized countries need to be guided by their European colonizers because they are somehow less evolved or civilized. Fanon argues that violence is justified to purge colonialism not just from the countries themselves, but from the very souls of their inhabitants, who have been so damaged by its abuses. According to Fanon, it is the poor above all who need to rebel if real change is to come, because the indigenous middle classes will just produce a society very similar to the old one. And after revolution, the new country should aspire to make real improvements in the lives of the worst off through education and investment. The Wretched of the Earth became an inspiration for many liberation struggles around the world after Fanon's death, and continues to be a key text in postcolonial studies.

O'Connor Narrator: Macat.com Format: Unabridged Length: 1 hr and 54 mins Language: English Release date: 07-19-16 Publisher: Macat International Limited. Ratings: 5 of 5 out of 3 votes Genres: Classics, Nonfiction Publisher's Summary: Born in 1933, Philip Zimbardo is a renowned and controversial American social psychologist who is fascinated by why people can sometimes behave in awful ways. Some psychologists believe people who commit cruelty are innately evil. Zimbardo disagrees. In his 2007 book, The Lucifer Effect, he argued that it is the power of situations around us that can cause otherwise good people to commit "evil", citing many historical examples to illustrate his point. Despite being published more than 35 years after the event, The Lucifer Effect details Zimbardo's own 1971 Stanford Prison Experiment (SPE), where ordinary volunteers playing guards in a mock prison rapidly became abusive. But he also describes the tortures committed by US Army personnel in Iraq's Abu Ghraib prison in 2003 - and how he himself testified in defense of one guard. The text has gained a lot of attention but has also caused much controversy over the ethics and methodology of the SPE as well as the truth or otherwise of Zimbardo's claims.

Ratings: 5 of 5 out of 1 votes Genres: Classics, Nonfiction Publisher's Summary: Philosopher Mary Wollstonecraft's 1792 work A Vindication of the Rights of Woman is a key text in the development of what we now know as feminism. Written in the atmosphere created by the French Revolution, which made radical change seem possible, Wollstonecraft's work challenges the idea that society's oppression of women is entirely natural. While her male contemporaries happily argued for the fundamental freedoms of all men, few were interested in extending these revolutionary rights to women. Infuriated that women should be educated only to serve men, Wollstonecraft asserted that the differences between male and female behavior are the result of nurture, not nature. She outlines a theory for the equal education of girls and boys and argues that women should no longer be taught only the "feminine" things that men believe make them better wives and mothers. Written more than 200 years ago, A Vindication of the Rights of Woman sets out all the basic principles of feminist thought that would be developed by later feminist writers and activists.

Hegel Phenomenology of Spirit Author: Ian Jackson Narrator: Macat.com Format: Unabridged Length: 1 hr and 43 mins Language: English Release date: 07-01-16 Publisher: Macat International Limited. Ratings: 3 of 5 out of 1 votes Genres: Classics, Nonfiction Publisher's Summary: In his 1807 work Phenomenology of Spirit, G. W. F. Hegel introduced the world to his philosophical system. His most influential work - and the culmination of the German Idealist movement begun in the late 18th century as a response to the works of Immanuel Kant - the book remains one of the undisputed classics of Western thought. The first major work of Western philosophy to introduce the idea that the truths of philosophy are inseparable not only from the history of philosophy itself, but also from the histories and politics of the societies in which they arise, Phenomenology continues to inspire prominent thinkers in its field. Yet its impact transcends the narrow field of professional philosophy. Its developmental account of self-consciousness and social relations, along with its themes of mutual recognition and the struggle between master and slave, have influenced academic disciplines ranging from psychoanalysis to sociology. Through its direct impact on Karl Marx and his intellectual successors, it has also become a key text for political movements throughout the 19th and 20th centuries.

Ratings: 4.5 of 5 out of 4 votes Genres: Classics, Nonfiction Publisher's Summary: A Macat analysis of Alexis de Tocqueville's Democracy in America. London: Penguin Group, 2003 Alexis de Tocqueville's Democracy in America, published in two volumes in 1835 and 1840, challenged conventional thinking about democracy when it appeared - and is still cited by leading politicians today. Having witnessed some negative effects of democratic revolutions in his native France, Tocqueville visited America in 1831 to see what a functioning republic looked like. His main concerns were that democracy could make people too dependent on the state and that minority voices might not be heard - a problem he termed "the Tyranny of the Majority". By examining America thoroughly, Tocqueville hoped to show how a democratic system could avoid these pitfalls. Tocqueville also made a number of accurate predictions about the future of the United States, anticipating that the debate over abolishing slavery would cause conflict and that the US and Russia would emerge as the world's two great powers. The New York Times decided: "No better study of a nation's institutions and culture than Tocqueville's Democracy in America has ever been written by a foreign observer." You can find out more about how Tocqueville's ideas have been challenged and applied - and how his work has impacted thinkers in other academic disciplines - by exploring further in the Macat Library. Macat's analyses cover 14 different subjects in the humanities and social sciences. Macat. Learn better. Think smarter. Aim higher.

Ratings: 2.5 of 5 out of 2 votes Genres: Classics, Nonfiction Publisher's Summary: One of the most important military strategy books ever published, Chinese general Sun Tzu's The Art of War has also been used as a manual for modern business, giving executives an insight into the vital importance of tactics and preparation. Written more than 2,000 years ago, this earliest surviving work on how to wage war successfully - and above all, rationally - argues that winning requires careful advance planning, better sources of information than your opponent, and a strategy that's flexible enough to adapt to changing conditions. Sun Tzu concludes that in the end, a decision not to take military action can be every bit as sensible and effective as being able to triumph on the battlefield. The very best way to win a war is, in fact, to achieve your aims without having to fight at all. Written in China around the sixth century BC, The Art of War continues to inspire military planners worldwide, but also people who want to succeed in the fields of business, law, and management.

Ratings: 4.5 of 5 out of 9 votes Genres: Classics, Nonfiction Publisher's Summary: First published in 1651, Leviathan drove important discussions about where kings get their authority to rule and what those kings must, in turn, do for their people. This is known as the "social contract". Thomas Hobbes wrote the book while exiled from his native England following the English Civil War that unseated King Charles I. In the face of England's radical - if temporary - rejection of its monarchy, Hobbes wanted to explain why it was important to have a strong central government, which in his time meant having a sovereign at its head. Asking the listener to imagine what society would be like without a state, Hobbes justifies why the people of a nation should pledge their allegiance to a government. He argues that society needs a state at its organizational heart, in politics, religion, the courts, and education. Otherwise there is no order, and "the war of all against all" will follow. Leviathan remains central to discussions of political philosophy to this day.

A key work of the post-World War II era, The Road to Serfdom is still relevant today, more than 70 years after it was first published. It continues to be hailed by opponents of big government and central planning as well as defenders of free-market capitalism. Listeners turn to it for its direct advice on the question of how to attain - and retain - power. Machiavelli's answer, in brief: Use any means necessary to make sure the state survives. Given the changeable nature of politics, the strong ruler that Machiavelli describes may need to lie or cheat, deceive, and, if necessary, resort to acts of violence - all the while maintaining an image of goodness. With enough skill - along with luck and favorable circumstances - the prince will retain his power. Machiavelli's ideas continue to be used today by leaders both scrupulous and unscrupulous. Rightly or wrongly, his name remains a byword for political behavior that deals in realities rather than theories, making The Prince arguably one of the most influential books in the Western tradition.

Ratings: 4.5 of 5 out of 6 votes Genres: Classics, Nonfiction Publisher's Summary: First available in 1689, John Locke's Two Treatises of Government is considered one of the most important works ever written on the foundations of government. Published anonymously, it argues against the popular idea at the time that monarchs have a God-given right to rule. Instead Locke proposes that sovereignty - supreme authority - ultimately resides with the people. He argues that citizens have not just the right but in fact the duty to renegotiate their relationship with those who govern, even if that means changing the institutions of the state and establishing a new legislative power. Locke's ideas influenced political thinkers in his native England as well as in the United States and France. Some of the language in the American Declaration of Independence of 1776 recalls Locke's arguments, and Thomas Jefferson - the principal author of the Declaration - called Locke one of "the three greatest men who have ever lived". For over three centuries, Two Treatises of Government has endured as a key text in political philosophy.

For Tolstoy, it is this command that has been most damaged by ecclesiastical interpretation. Tolstoy had not always been possessed of the religious ideas set forth in My Religion. For 35 years of his life, he was, in the proper acceptation of the word, a nihilist - not a revolutionary socialist but a man who believed in nothing. But faith came to him; he believed in the doctrine of Jesus, and his life underwent a sudden transformation.
