For the past few years, I haven't had a classroom. However, I have been able to guest teach lessons with students. This is challenging because I don't get the luxury of multiple opportunities to build teacher-student relationships. I have to earn a little trust within 30 seconds of meeting them. This episode is about five ways to earn students' trust and letting them know they belong in our classrooms. We'll focus on the use of excerpts from four major young-adult novels to help us with these conversations in the classrooms and talk about how they can inform conversations with our faculty. I have a confession. I wasn't interested in reading Mr. Minor's book. I'm a fan of Mr. Minor. I loved listening to him speak at NCTE's Conference on English Leadership. I think he is a big deal. But I was really expecting his book to be a motivational book and less about curriculum and instruction. I've never been this happy to be wrong! It turns out, Mr. Minor's book is a superhero book that condemns the superhero narrative. Not all aspects, just the stereotypes that burden educators with unrealistic expectations. Expectations that cause burn out and promote martyrdom work culture. In this episode, I share a handful of excerpts worth reflecting on with your faculty, PLC, teacher team, teacher BFF, first-year teacher, a teacher in a slump, and administrator! This book is ideal to create a teacher workforce of free thinkers, problem solvers, and self-sufficient teams. If you want a teacher team that follows the district curriculum to Fidelity, you might want to avoid this book. Minor, C. (2019). In this episode, Stark discusses the opening chapters of Harry Potter. It's a big deal for him to read the series, so we're very excited to start this new obsession with him. And Daddy shares his own experience with Witchcraft in Middle School! 

Stark (age 6) has been an avid gamer since age 2. His Nintendo 3DS and Wii U skill have always impressed me, but then he turned 5 and became obsessed with the World of Warcraft! Although I miss the days of playing Legend of Zelda and Mario Brothers, it is exciting to watch him grow as a gamer.

“Press Start” is a series heavily influenced by video game culture and tells the tale of Super Rabbit Boy and his adventures protecting Animal Town from the minions of King Viking!

This episode will spoil “The Hobbit,” the book and the movies! Stark just finished reading and watching the epic adventure with his mother and shares his main takeaways and thoughts about dwarves.
