Using YAL to Confront School-based Trauma
For the past few years, I haven't had a classroom. However, I have been able to guest teach lessons with students. This is challenging because I don't get the luxury of multiple opportunities to build teacher-student relationships. I have to earn a little trust within 30 seconds of meeting them. This episode is about five ways to earn students' trust and letting them know they belong in our classrooms. We'll focus on the use of excerpts from four major young-adult novels to help us with these conversations in the classrooms and talk about how they can inform conversations with our faculty. Transcript here Works Cited Acevedo, Elizabeth. With the Fire on High. HarperTeen, an Imprint of HarperCollinsPublishers, 2019. DiAngelo, Robin. What your faculty needs to reflect on while reading "We Got This." by Cornelius Minor
I have a confession. I wasn't interested in reading Mr. Minor's book. I'm a fan of Mr. Minor. I loved listening to him speak at NCTE's Conference on English Leadership. I think he is a big deal. But I was really expecting his book to be a motivational book and less about curriculum and instruction. I've never been this happy to be wrong! It turns out, Mr. Minor's book is a superhero book that condemns the superhero narrative. Not all aspects, just the stereotypes that burden educators with unrealistic expectations. Expectations that cause burn out and promote martyrdom work culture. In this episode, I share a handful of excerpts worth reflecting on with your faculty, PLC, teacher team, teacher BFF, first-year teacher, a teacher in a slump, and administrator! This book is ideal to create a teacher workforce of free thinkers, problem solvers, and self-sufficient teams. If you want a teacher team that follows the district curriculum to Fidelity, you might want to avoid this book. Minor, C. (2019). We got this: Equity, access, and the quest to be who our students need us to be. Portsmouth, NH: Heinemann. ------------------ More Connections and Resources! Does the book "Black Privilege" prove white privilege is a myth?
No. Of course, no. But does this text belong in your classroom library? Well, listen to some of the passages I found particularly powerful and helpful for a teen or pre-teen brain. I'll also include some suggestions for using the passages as writing prompts and how they connect with White Fragility by Robin DiAngelo. Works Cited CHARLAMAGNE. (2018). It's ABOUT TIME teachers started reading "White Fragility: Why It's So Hard for White People to Talk About"
This is a longtime favorite of mine and, despite the tragic circumstances, I am glad to see more people finally interested in studying this work. Especially teachers! The excerpts I'll discuss and I feel are especially applicable to educators are taken from pages 7-9, 30-31, 56-57, 102-105. I'll include pics from my presentation slides about this work and the YAL novels that I felt paired nicely with the previously listed excerpts on my social medias: Twitter: @mrjoshflores Facebook https://www.facebook.com/Getting-LIT-113893257018002/ DiAngelo, Robin.
