Glenn Korff School of Music Alumnus and Lecturer of Composition Kurt Knecht (D.M.A. 2009) will have his major new commission, titled “Toccata, Adagio, Fugue,” premiered at the Organ Historical Society (OHS) National Convention at Kimmel Hall in Philadelphia on June 27. The commission celebrates the 60th anniversary of the OHS.

This is a teaser for the upcoming CD that Paul Barnes is about to release. More info on N. Lincoln Hanks: French artist, playwright, and filmmaker Jean Cocteau was a major influence in the compositional output of Philip Glass. My most popular set of Glass piano transcriptions The Orphee Suite for Piano was based on the Glass opera inspired by Cocteau’s 1949 film Orpheus. N. Lincoln Hanks Monstre sacré is likewise based on Cocteau’s special term for that eccentric, personally flawed artist without whose work we simply cannot live. Larger than life, the effervescent personality of the ‘holy terror’ completely dominates all social settings. The first movement Entrée et intrus introduces our artist in the musical form of the French overture. With pompous and regal opening chordal gestures, the monster’s arrival is appropriately announced. A contrapuntal section in compound meter follows the introduction in traditional fashion. Jeux et théorie: connexion libre avec Bach, answers the musical question, “What would happen if Glenn Gould (the quintessential monstre sacré) were to improvise on themes of Bach at a party?” Although Gould’s presence at a party would be highly unlikely, Hanks nevertheless utilizes multiple themes and textures from the gigues of Bach. The musical result is a perfect reflection of the imagination of the monster. The expressive slow movement, Amour parfait or ‘perfect love’ features Hanks’ use of melodic palindromes that subtely suggest the monster looking at himself in the mirror and falling in love over and over again. The final movement, Rondeau et sortie: le monstre danse, celebrates the monster’s energetic dance and final exit from the scene. The first movement’s pompous chordal gestures return signaling a cyclic summation of the artist’s charismatic presence.

Praised by the New York Times for his “Lisztian thunder and deft fluidity,” and the San Francisco Chronicle as “ferociously virtuosic,” pianist Paul Barnes has electrified audiences with his intensely expressive playing and cutting-edge programming.

The recording, produced by Glass’s label Orange Mountain Music, features a selection of Glass’s etudes with works by N. Lincoln Hanks, Lucas Floyd, Jason Bahr, Ivan Moody, Zack Stanton, and Jonah Gallagher. The Winter Festival is a unique concert band and chamber ensemble festival for high school sophomores, juniors and seniors. The festival is designed to give participants an outstanding and comprehensive playing experience. Festival participants are chosen through a recorded audition process. Students attending the festival are involved in three different ensembles: an honor band; a chamber ensemble coached by one of the Glenn Korff School of Music's talented applied wind and percussion faculty; and a large symphonic band that combines the festival honor band with the University Wind Ensemble. Students also participate in a masterclass with the applied wind and percussion faculty. In the Spring of 2014, the Glenn Korff School of Music's Campus Band performed a concert titled "Nteractions". During this performance in Kimball Recital Hall, the audience was asked to tweet during and about the performance. The Fine and Performing Arts Alumni Board selected Glenn Korff and Mary Riepma Ross as the recipients of the 2014 Award of Merit. The awards were presented posthumously to them at the Hixson-Lied College of Fine and Performing Arts Honors Day Dinner on April 26, 2014. Mr. Korff and Ms. Ross are two generous and visionary individuals who have made a significant impact on our students, faculty, College and community. Two truly remarkable people who gave two incredible gifts this past year that will impact the future of the Hixson-Lied College of Fine and Performing Arts for years to come.
