Big Questions: Do We Have to Go to Church?
It has been a DOOZY of a couple of months. I’m glad you’re still here with me even though I’ve been spare in offering you new episodes with big questions. Truthfully, life and work have been exhausting the past few months, and I’m finally getting a little breathing room. So here's a BRAND NEW EPISODE for you!I’ve been wrestling with today’s question for some time. Even gone so far as to wonder if we do have to go to church, what kind of Church do we want it to be?I’m curious: what does being a part of a church mean to you? If you could change one thing about your church or if you could only keep one part of it, what would it be? What makes Church, church for you? Let me know! I’m genuinely curious if we were starting over from scratch, how would we choose to gather as the Body of Christ?Drop me a line on social media or leave a review wherever you listen. REPLAY: Ten Percent (from "I Didn't Say That")
It's Tax Season and while today's episode (a replay from 2023) doesn't have anything to do with how much we may owe or get refunded from the government this year, it is all about that magic number we've arrived at being what we're supposed to give back to God (or so we think): 10%. There's biblical support for that number, but Jesus has a different one in mind...Let me know what you think!Support The Show! Came home Saturday to find that my favorite wild fruit, the dewberry, has begun to flower. If you’ve not had a dewberry, you should. Find a ditch along the road, and I’ll be you’ll find one. Big Questions: Where is God?
It feels like the world keeps dropping reasons in our laps to ask some really big questions. Woke up to the news Saturday that our nation is questionably at war. That and lots of other current events have me wondering, “Where is God?” A lot these days. But a few stories reminded me these last few days that we have a pretty good idea how to answer that question.Let me know what you think!Genesis 2, I Kings 19, Matthew 22, John 14ASK ME YOUR BIG QUESTIONS!Support The Show! We’re now a part of the Rural Podcast Directory!Follow God Knows Where:InstagramFacebookFollow Good Faith Media:FacebookInstagram_____God Knows Where is created, written, and produced by Brett HarrisMusic for today's episode written and performed by Thomas SteinwinderSupport The Show! Got a special treat for you today and all week. I’m going to put out the recordings from my recent time in Benoit, MS for you to enjoy. And they’re on theme with what we’re doing with Big Questions. They just happen to be three of the very few questions Jesus actually answered in the gospels. What is the greatest commandment? Who is my neighbor? I’m recording this episode from Benoit, MS, where I'm leading Benoit Union Church’s annual revival. Benoit Union Church is a community worth getting to know. Big Questions: Why does evil exist?
As we keep exploring these Big Questions we have of faith and we get from others in our lives, there’s one question that flows most directly from the one I asked last week. If God is good, why does evil exist?I don’t know if I have a good answer. I might not have a satisfying answer, but I’ve wrestled with it a lot and I’ll share what I think with you today. Let me know what you think. You might have your own answers to these questions we'll ponder over the next few weeks, and I’d encourage you to share those with the folks in your life. Strike up a conversation. These don’t have to be a one-way street. And if they bring up questions for you, let me know. Big Questions: Why Do I Believe in God?
Well, here we are. The first true episode of Big Questions! Figured we’d start off with a real softball. Can’t you tell by the title?I don’t know that my kids have asked me this question, but I know I’ve asked it myself and part of my response hit me as I walking the other day. I heard a quote from Steve Jobs and it got my wheels turning on why it is that we believe in God. You might have your own answers to these questions we'll ponder over the next few weeks, and I’d encourage you to share those with the folks in your life. Strike up a conversation. REPLAY: Swimming in Grief
In the midst of the heaviness of the world, I spent the weekend with three friends, one of whom lost his dad a few weeks ago. The time I would’ve used to get the first real episode of our Big Questions series together the way I would like it was better used being with some of my best friends in the world at that funeral. So, as I get the real first episode of Big Questions together more cleanly for you for next week, I’m sharing this episode about a powerful story of grief in the Bible. One that we don’t always consider through the eyes of grief. Let me know what you think. Some good news in the midst of the heaviness - my wife’s non-profit, Nurture Our Future, raised over $10,000 this weekend for their partnership with Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library, a program that provides one free book per month to children from birth to age 5!Also, I got invited to lead a revival! Never done that before, but I’m really looking forward to being with the good folks at Benoit Union Church - a Methodist, Baptist, and Presbyterian congregation - that’s been around for 125 years in the Mississippi Delta. Instead of asking big questions, we’ll be looking at the three questions Jesus directly answered and see if that revives anything in us. If you’re around or want to join, the revival will be February 15-18. Introducing Big Questions!
Welcome to God Knows Where's New Series, "Big Questions!" Big Questions is all about wrestling with some of the big questions we all ask of God, of our faith, of our tradition, in honest ways. It's what a lot of you have been asking for over the three years of God Knows Where. How would I answer this or that question? What would I say in this scenario? So, here goes nothing. For the next, however long it takes, I’ll wrestle with some big questions and hope that it leads to some meaningful responses. Maybe these reflections will help you wrestle with the big questions you have for God in your own life. The doubts that have almost driven you away from faith. The experiences that have made you question if faith is even worth pursuing. Ponder alongside your people while you listen and share this series with them from wherever you listen to God Knows Where. Offshoots: Flickering Flames
Sunday night, I was invited to preach at Ekklesia in Hattiesburg, Mississippi. We celebrated Epiphany and I shared my thoughts on the first five verses of the Gospel of John. I’m going to share them with y’all here today. And, if you happen to have been in the room on Sunday night at Ekklesia, I went back a filled in a hole in the middle after talking about this sermon with my wife. I’d jokingly suggested to the church’s band leader that they play the Stranger Things theme song since it felt appropriate for talking about light and dark and the presence of good in the midst of dark moments, and Elizabeth reminded me of a way light leads the kids in Hawkins forward. That’s enough there. No spoilers from the end of Stranger Things is you haven’t finished it yet. Just musings on God’s goodness and presence. I’m back from vacation so that means we’re back on the river. It’s a stretch to call today’s river, a river, but that’s what the psalmist and the prophet Ezekiel do, so I’m siding with them. True Fall is still a month away down here in south Mississippi, but this morning's crisp air got me excited about being outside again. And since we’re talking about rivers, I figured why not encourage y’all to get outside too!So grab your coffee and go sit on the porch or ease off the gas pedal and roll the windows down or, if you can, take a listen to two Psalms I’m going to read near a creek or river close to your house. Whatever works for you.Pslams 46 and 98* Support The Show! Live Streams: Stuck in the Mud
We’re exploring a new river in our series “Live Streams” today. It’s wild to me to me that it takes so long for us to start talking about the Jordan River given all that we know happens in and around it, but here we are visiting it for the first time. And it’s in one of my favorites stories too. Let’s see what this story down by the riverside has to teach us today. Joshua 3* Support The Show! Live Streams: Breaking Boundaries
We’re going to leave the stories of Genesis behind and move on ahead to a story about Moses. They are some mentions of rivers in the stories of Jacob and Esau and in at least one dream Joseph interprets, but none that happen in the river…at least not like the story of the day Moses was found in a basket in the Nile.Let’s see what this story down by the riverside has to teach us today. Live Streams: Map Quest
From the rivers flowing out of Eden and the Nile where Moses was found to the crossings and healings and transformations that happen in other rivers, we’re looking at how our tradition has been shaped by the flowing, living water all around us, by both the boundaries they provide and the ones God breaks within them. Join us for episode two of "Live StreamsToday we’re looking at the second story of a river we come to in Genesis. And at first glance it doesn’t look like much of a story at all, but I think there’s a lot beneath the surface. Genesis 15:13-18* Support The Show! Live Streams: Eden Flow
I’ve got a stack of books on my bedside table to read all on one topic: rivers. Actually, one river. The Pascagoula and all its tributaries, including the creek that runs not far from my house. I’m fascinated by this river system, but that's a story for another day (maybe another podcast?)But they’ve had me thinking about rivers a lot and I realized how many great stories from our tradition take place in or on the banks of rivers. So selfishly as I read about the Pascagoula and work on a project about it beyond God Knows Where, I’m going to spend the next series here here at God Knows Where reflecting on the stories, and rivers, that shaped our tradition. From the rivers flowing out of Eden and the Nile where Moses was found to the crossings and healings and transformations that happen in other rivers, our tradition has been shaped by the flowing, living water all around us, by both the boundaries they provide and the ones God breaks within them. BE. - Choose Your Attitude
We’ve talked about needing to be reconciled and renewed in this series so far and today, it’s all about being thankful. It might feel like there are fewer and fewer reasons to be thankful these days, but I hope we’ll see in looking at a story from one of Paul’s letters, that no matter what is swirling around us, we can find something for which to be thankful. Let me know if you agree. Thanks for listening, y’all. Like what you’re hearing? Leave a rating or a review wherever you listen. Be. - Overdue for Renewal
Let’s keep going with this series Be with another thing we’re called to be, that we don’t often take enough time to do: to be renewed and refreshed. Let’s talk about that a little bit today and see where it leads us.Thanks for listening, y’all. Like what you’re hearing? Leave a rating or a review wherever you listen. Be. - Put It Behind You.
I don’t know what Sunday was like for you, worshipping hours after news of our nation inserting itself into another violent conflict, but I often find these times to be hard and to make it difficult find or understand where God is in it all. But then, I’m reminding of where Jesus stood on issues of major disagreement and how to settle them: by seeking reconciliation. By doing the hard work of repairing relationships not the easy work of ripping them apart. So as we continue with this series, Be, I’m reminded of those words that have echoed throughout our tradition. Be reconciled. Let’s talk about that a little bit today and see where it leads us to go and search for the divine presence in the midst of the chaos all around us.2 Corinthians 5:16-20, Matthew 5:21-24* Support The Show! Be. - Do.Be.Do.Be.Do
The world feels beyond chaotic right now and it’s had me thinking a lot about the Church, it’s role, and even some opportunities we’re missing to be who God calls us to be in moments like these.Three years ago, I left life as pastor. I don’t think I left pastoring, I just left getting paid for it and going to an office, but before I did, I led our congregation through a short series called BE ___.I’ll explain a little more in the episode, and it could be a much longer series than it could, but for these next few weeks of summer, I’m revisiting those ideas and I want to do it with you.
