    #84 – EP 84 Nathan Bennett

EP 84 Nathan Bennett What happens when you stop trying to be just one kind of athlete? In this episode of The Good Old Boy Podcast, Buster sits down with Nathan Bennett — a self-described “fitness butterfly” who has bounced from GORUCK events and F3 to running, strongman competitions, hiking, bodybuilding, and whatever challenge happens to catch his attention next. Nathan shares how he went from being relatively inactive to discovering that he was capable of doing far more than he ever realized. Along the way, the conversation gets into the value of doing hard things, Type 2 fun, suffering alongside your buddies, and why sometimes the best way to grow is simply to sign up for something that scares you a little. Nathan also takes us behind the scenes of preparing for his first bodybuilding competition — the meal prep, training, sacrifices, spray tan, posing, and mental battle that comes with getting stage-ready. But just three weeks before his original competition date, a serious health setback forced him to pull out and reevaluate everything he had been working toward. Instead of quitting, Nathan recovered, reset the goal, and got back after it. Buster and Nathan also talk about something that often gets overlooked when chasing ambitious goals: the impact those goals have on your wife, family, friendships, and everyday life. Personal improvement is great, but not when the people closest to you are constantly paying the price for it. Ultimately, this episode isn't really about bodybuilding, running, rucking, or strongman. It's about being willing to try. Nathan's Good Old Boy wisdom sums it up perfectly: don't let the fear of failure keep you from trying something different. You're probably capable of far more than you realize. Maybe you don't need to find your one thing. Maybe you just need to become a fitness butterfly. #83 – EP 83 - Billy Gaskey & Travis Green "Surrender the Glory"

EP 83 - Billy Gaskey & Travis Green "Surrender the Glory" Billy Gaskey and Travis Green, hosts of the Surrender the Glory Podcast, finally sit down with Buster for a conversation that has been a couple of years in the making. What starts with homeschooling, raising kids, and building community quickly turns into a much deeper conversation about faith, fatherhood, mentoring young men, vulnerability, and what happens when men stop giving the automatic “I’m good” answer. Billy and Travis share their experiences working with young men through church and youth ministry, including why connection has to come before correction and why today's young men need trustworthy adults willing to walk beside them, listen, and have conversations that aren't always comfortable. The guys also dig into the mission behind Surrender the Glory: giving people a place to tell their testimony. Not every story needs addiction, disaster, or a rock-bottom comeback. Sometimes the testimony is simply remaining faithful through ordinary life. Every story has value, because a story that seems ordinary to you may be exactly what someone else needs to hear. And because this is still the Good Old Boy Podcast, it doesn't stay serious the whole time. The conversation wanders through rucking, growing up in the '80s and '90s, questionable childhood decisions, Antarctica, Missing 411, dolphins, conspiracy theories, and plenty of other rabbit holes. Underneath it all, though, is a conversation about men showing up for their families, showing up for younger generations, showing up for one another, and being willing to admit when life isn't as simple as “I'm good.” As Travis puts it, men often carry things because they don't want to burden somebody else—but sometimes talking about it is exactly what takes a little weight out of the backpack. #82 – EP 81: Guns, Grit & the 80% Solution | Thomas “JAX” Jackson of Shoot With JAX

EP 82: Thomas "JAX" Jackson In this episode, I sit down with my friend Thomas "JAX" Jackson, creator of the YouTube channel Shoot With JAX. What starts as a conversation about firearms, training, filmmaking, and building a YouTube channel turns into a much broader discussion about discipline, leadership, adventure, family, friendship, and deliberately doing hard things. JAX talks about why he started his channel. Not because he considered himself an expert, but because he wanted to become a better shooter and learn filmmaking along the way. We also revisit our Grand Canyon Rim-to-Rim and Yosemite Misogi adventures, including some difficult decisions JAX helped make when things didn't go according to plan. From flying Marine Corps Cobra attack helicopters and commercial jets to training in Afghanistan, raising a family, staying fit, and building something creative on YouTube, the conversation ultimately comes back to growth through action, authenticity, and surrounding yourself with people willing to push alongside you. #81 – EP 81 - Fernando Chavira

EP 81 - Fernando Chavira In Episode 81 of The Good Old Boy Podcast, Fernando Chavira sits down for a raw conversation about what happens when the life that looks good on paper no longer feels right. Fernando shares his journey from chasing money, cars, relationships, partying, and the traditional definition of success to realizing that the real work had to happen internally. After recognizing destructive patterns in his relationships and his relationship with alcohol, he made the decision to take responsibility for his life, quit drinking, change careers, lean into his faith, and start becoming the man he actually wanted to be. The conversation gets into accountability, fear, faith, vulnerability, career changes, relationships, emotional awareness, and the importance of having people around you who are willing to speak into your life. One of the biggest themes is that perfection isn't the goal — consistency is. Sometimes the best thing you can do when you're overwhelmed is recognize what's happening, take one step, and call someone you trust. Fernando also challenges the idea that we should regret learning life's lessons "too late." Maybe some lessons can only be learned in certain seasons. The difficult chapters aren't interruptions to the story — they're part of what makes the story worth telling. The only thing routine about you should be your routine . That was the sentence my friend Triston Elliott said to me when I called him recently. I mentioned to him how I was in a funk and didn't know what was causing it or how to get out of it. He said, "How's your routine? Cause the only thing routine about you should be your routine?!" He made me laugh then we went deeper. How was my diet, workouts, relationship with my wife and kids, work, and more? Triston isn't a licensed therapist, but it was just what I needed to hear. Life is hard. There are a lot of distractions, resistance, and shinny objects to take you off course. If you don't have a damn good routine that is producing compounding results for you, then you can find yourself sitting in a deep void, not knowing how you got there or how to get out. #57 – The Gonna' Get

Episode 57 - The Gonna' Get One of the most important life skills is sales. You might have to sell a product, a service, or sometimes yourself. You can talk about features and benefits, price vs. cost, and discuss the real problem vs. the perceived problem. There are many aspects to sales that go into making it successful. However, the biggest indicator is when you get the PO. The check. The cash. That makes the transaction official. That closes the deal. Before that happens, however, usually there is a "gonna get." I'm gonna get this or that—the same thing in life. We are gonna get that boat, or that car, or that business. The truth is there are a lot of gonna gets in life with only a few POs along the way. #36 – #27 - Cort Peterson

Cort Petterson I met Cort Petterson when I moved into my neighborhood almost 8 years ago. He has been the quintessential good old boy who would enlighten the young dad, husband, and friend with a simple "Man yall just don't know!" comment while discussing life. Cort has always been the straight shooter and also served as a guide to a few of us on what you will see while raising kids. Give a listen to Cort and his good old boy wisdom!
