Could be, as we get more bust outs and a an ultra-rare Willie and the Hand Jive. The Dead are on fire from the first song. How about that Deal! Never miss a Sunday show! And this is especially true when it's a Palm Sunday in the City of Botherly Love. Shakedown Street never fails to impress in Philly and this one is no different. And that's only the first song. A great set on a great night with the Grateful Dead."Jerry is too busy playing to care about what anyone thinks, the healthiest way to deal with most situations. As perfect as a Gimme Some Lovin’>Deal to open the first night at the Philadelphia Spectrum, when a ticket to paradise could be had for less than twenty bucks can be."Check it out.📚 LINKS & RESOURCES🔗 Follow along with music on: Relisten🔗 Navigate The Series🗺 NAVIGATE THIS TOUR🎯 New to the show? It's an open secret the Grateful Dead always play great in Maine, so how does this show measure up to those who have come before it, or after?Second sets opening with a Scarlet>Fire can't be all that bad. You know it, we know it, but it what rises from the ashes following this pair that can make or break a show. It is the end of the tour for us, so we gladly hang on every note, every word, watching time slip through our fingers, never to come back. It is bittersweet, and none more so than the fitting Brokedown Palace encore:"As our adventure reaches a fitting end, it is time to pass the baton to those who will carry it forward. Brokedown Palace is a metaphor for the life we have shared together. While it hasn’t always been pretty or perfect, we tried our best to be a positive force. Life on the road is full of adventures and clichés, which, come to think of it, is a cliché itself."Check it out.📚 LINKS & RESOURCES🔗 Follow along with music on: Relisten🔗 Navigate The Series🗺 NAVIGATE THIS TOUR🎯 New to the show? Hartford has a reputation for hosting some fine shows, and tonight is no exception. This is it. The big one. Fireworks both on and off the stage as the Grateful Dead play what is most likely the show of the tour with a staggering seven songs before drums, causing much consternation among tapers, yet satiating the Hartford crowd. Some amazing stuff. And Comes A Time is the one song to rule them all. From the show:"Comes A Time is the crown jewel of the tour. It will be placed in a glass viewing case in the Museum of Collected Deadhead Minds and occasionally loaned to others for viewing. The Deadhead Trust association has an endowment totaling thousands of dollars to ensure it is safely and securely cared for. The fact that we are here is no accident. Comes A Time appears to fulfill a unique role in our lives. As there are varying degrees of fandom, we await our turn, and the coaxing that brings forth a fully realized version of ourselves. Night four of tour on May 8th, one of the most auspicious dates in Grateful Dead history, and in Upstate New York! Could it be? For us it's the beginning of a three night Civic Center extravaganza. Glens Falls welcomes back Deadheads for the second time in less than a year for some minor league hockey rink action. From the drop of the puck Jerry and the boys decide it's gloves off as they rip into an Alabama Getaway>Promised Land. The answer, "It's complicated," is a rather roundabout way of saying “no.” But as we all know, thoughts have a tendency to waver between the dark and the light.Oh there are moments; most of them occur in the second set. There is more than a hint of worry going on during this tour. Things are getting far out, yes, even venturing into the world of litigation. Will the witness take the stand?"In the charming town of Ithaca, NY, on the campus of Cornell University, stands Barton Hall, a nondescript building of stone, wood, and steel. A barn that has housed a show so legendary it’s stored in the Library of Congress for safekeeping. But any Deadhead worth their salt could easily pull comparable, if not superior, versions from their collection. We’ve arrived three years too late to witness a show some consider as historically significant as the birth of Christ, while others dismiss it as “overrated” or “not even the best show that week.” Deadhead consensus is impossible. Things defitiely get tranger in the second set.Join us as we continue to tour from Baltimore, all the way up to MaineFrom the show:"The Grateful Dead’s performance of The Other One is an incredible display of musical might. But as muscles contract to lift heavy weights, they relax afterward. So too with music. The music softens, the light returns, wiping away uncomfortable memories of the past. Highlights include the opening Half Step>Franklin's Tower as well as a wigged out Playing in the Band and a beautiful Black PeterAn excerpt from Playing in The Band:"The band and this song highlight the common, raw instinct among predators, but the urge to survive is not optional; it is fundamental to life. Nature does not pose moral dilemmas; it simply follows the harsh principles of Darwinian evolution, a horror show, if you will. As you pause to consider this statement, Playing In The Band sheds its former identity, exonerating itself of any questionable actions encouraged during its tenure, and drifts, piece by piece, toward the drums."You can probably tell where this one is headed.═══📚 LINKS & RESOURCES🔗 Follow along with music on: Relisten🔗 Navigate The Series🗺 NAVIGATE THIS TOUR🎯 New to the show? Well, if it is summertime then the time is indeed right. The last night of three comes with the pressure of a radio simulcast and high expectations on a Saturday Night in New Jersey. Can the Grateful Dead pull it off? Here's a hint:"There are thousands of people out there, listening at home parties, through headphones, on transistors, in the woods, at the base of an abandoned railroad trestle while sitting on cases of beer, in a field where a group of cars is arranged in a circle, doors and windows open, tuned to the only game in town. We must let them know they are as much a part of us as we are of them. That’s right, it’s Saturday night!" The lack of an encore has thrust doubt among the faithful. Were we not worthy? Was it a technical issue? Were they ever here at all? These questions answered and more in this meg-deep dive."Last night’s lack of an encore has emboldened us to the point of obsession. And the Grateful Dead will pay the price. C’mon, children, clap your hands and invoke the spirits of your ancestors. Awaken them to join us in what we will surely make a Friday night of redemption. This is our band now, they work for us. That’s how it goes in New Jersey. We gave you the benefit of the doubt last night, but not tonight. Tonight, you shall receive the full brunt of our ire. But there is a road to redemption. You will channel that energy into flowing musical notes that envelop us like a cocoon. We will emerge transformed, experiencing a revival of the soul. There's only one way to find out.A Tennessee Jed sample from the podcast:"Our empathy for the simple life grows, a quiet recognition found in music that carries lessons from a culture we will never experience. Empathy gives way to jealousy and envy for a life we’ve never known. But jealousy is a two-way street. Well, if it is summertime then the time is indeed right.People get ready:With that, the white-gloved attendants remove the banner reading "1,541 Days since the last NYC Show" from the balcony and carry it to the concourse, where it is folded into a tight triangle and stored away, never to be used again. As they do so, take a moment to wish each other a joyful bicentennial. While the nation is preparing for its journey into its second century, a throng of Grateful Dead fans has spilled onto the Upper West Side, along with a crew of misfits, hangers-on, freaks, psychopaths, and yours truly, who lick their lips in anticipation of the return of The Magnificent Seven: Jerry, Bob, Phil, Donna, Keith, Bill, and Mickey. The NYC run kicks off with Cold Rain and Snow. It is a tale as old as time: emotional stagflation and trouble with the missus. Packed with energy and featuring a number of bust-outs, the tour was unforgettable, including the legendary “Box of Rain” in Hampton. However, a closer look suggests this might not have been either the highlight or the best show of the tour. Make sure to check out all six shows!Oh Boy the great East Coast Scarlet>Fire drought continues with a spirited Scarlet>Touch that doesn't quite take us to the promised land. Some spirited playing on our last night of the tour, but not getting the Fire sticks far longer than necessary. From the podcast:"In fact, there will be no Scarlet>Fire combinations until Cal Expo in May, one of only three in ’86, all performed in California. The Great East Coast Fire Drought ran from the Meadowlands, November 11, 1985, to Hampton, March 22, 1987. And hold on to your hats; the next Philly Fire on the Mountain will not occur until 18 months later, at The Spectrum on September 11, 1988. Then again, if your biggest problem in life is not catching the Dead playing Scarlet>Fire, it must be pretty good. However, a closer look suggests this might not have been either the highlight or the best show of the tour. Make sure to check out all six shows!Last night of the tour and both the band and ourselves are starting to feel fatigued. The first set does little to alleviate this feeling, but is notable for the first ever Desolation Row which clocks in at over ten minutes and sung virtually flawlessly. Hopes are high for a nice closing second setFrom the podcast:"Desolation Row is like taking a long walk along the beach while escaped circus freaks tell you their life stories. They are so captivating that we want to drop everything and join them at the end of the boardwalk. Given how the set keeps wobbling and shaking, this may be a good idea."Check it out.📚 LINKS & RESOURCES🔗 Follow along with music on: Relisten🔗 Navigate The Series🗺 NAVIGATE THIS TOUR🎯 New to the show? When tickets for all three nights were in hand, they knew. It was just a question of when, not if. And certainly not where. Philly is the place to do it. No one cares about next time, whether it’s Portland, Providence, or Hartford. No one knows how to do it like Philadelphia, and they will be the first ones to let you know. But when haven’t they? And this set's looking better as time passes; perhaps the third night’s the charm. Brent takes the reins and leads us on a pleasant ride across a vast expanse of possibilities. The groove is found, and we’re here to ride it—spellbound. Check it out.📚 LINKS & RESOURCES🔗 Follow along with music on: Relisten🔗 Navigate The Series🗺 NAVIGATE THIS TOUR🎯 New to the show? With plenty of energy and a slew of bust-outs, the tour was one to remember, containing the legendary Box of Rain in Hampton. But a closer look reveals why this may not have been either the show or the song of the tour. Be sure to check out all six shows! From the podcast“Something better” ain’t this version of Throwing Stones. Bobby is a half step ahead of everyone—a double-bogey version. So much for par for the course. The mistakes lead to intriguing dance moves and split-second confusion, ultimately contributing to the performance's chaotic vibe. The show has strayed so far from the Box of Rain that it feels destined to wait in the corner while the other kids at the party play games and fight over second helpings of cake. This Throwing Stones would have to rip the roof off this place to even right the Mothership. Conjecture, but we’re willing to place a small wager that it isn’t happening. The Grateful Dead never fail to play great in Maine, it is an open secret, so how does this show measure up to those who have come before it, or after? The first set had its moments with a ripping opener and a heavy Loser.Any show that opens with a Scarlet>Fire can't be all that bad. You know it, we know it, but it what rises from the ashes following this pair that can make or break a show. It is the end of the tour for us, so we gladly hang on every note, every word, watching time slip through our fingers, never to come back. It is bittersweet, and none more so than the fitting Brokedown Palace encore:Life on tour is an adventure, but like all great adventures, it too must eventually come to an end. All the emotion and angst felt this week was unforgettable. We hope you felt the same, or at least felt something. A heartfelt thank you to everyone for joining us on this incredible road trip called life. And on Mother's Day no less. Oh the Grateful Dead give Mom plenty to worry about, but don't tell your sons or daughters, they are too busy having fun. The Grateful Dead never fail to play great in Maine, it is an open secret, so how does this show measure up to those who have come before it, or after? How about a little discourse on the state of the show inside the state of Maine, inside a decidedly southern Alabama Getaway:Sailors could call it the perfect storm, keeping away both curiosity seekers and mama’s boys. Seriously, Mom is not letting you travel five or eight or whatever hours it takes to get all the way to friggin’ MAINE to see the Grateful Dead on her day. You can go next week. Unfortunately, Mom has no clue that there’s nothing like a show with a salt-and-pepper mix of hardcore tour heads and Black Bear locals. And that, you can only get in Maine. As usual, Jerry rips it up, full of grit and fuzz, like a used sweater. Hartford has a reputation for hosting some fine shows, and tonight is no exception. This is it. The big one. Fireworks both on and off the stage as the Grateful Dead play what is most likely the show of the tour with a stggering seven songs before drums, causing much consternation among tapers, yet satiating the Hartford crowd. Some amazing stuff. We thought we knew it all when they played Feel like a Stranger as the third song in the second set:"With less than half the show left in real time, Bob suggests a long, crazy night is still on the docket. And only a fool would challenge anything time-related with these guys. Time: The Grateful Dead bend it. Back in the favored second-set position, the Stranger is grooving, and the drummers are in the pocket, compelling us to dance in ways not seen since humans communicated via hieroglyphs on stone. We voice our thoughts with abstract movements. Hopefully, we aren’t offending anyone with obscene gestures, even if they are known only to a select group of Slavic shepherds. If so, apologies in advance. "Check it out.📚 LINKS & RESOURCES🔗 Follow along with music on: Relisten🔗 Navigate The Series🗺 NAVIGATE THIS TOUR🎯 New to the show? Night four of tour on May 8th, one of the most auspicious dates in Grateful Dead history, and in Upstate New York! Set two, night four of tour, and the beginning of a three night Civic Center extravaganza. Glens Falls welcomes back Deadheads for the second time in less than a year for some minor league hockey rink action.UJB provides the emotional relief necessary after the rather heavy ending. It segues magnificently into Estimated and the show is on the run. The Dead deliver an emphatic Truckin' because they can and the comes Stella. Once again words:"Jerry kindly propels it for us: simple notes, simple phrasing, and a brief dip into the inevitable choir of angels. Oh, they are among us, urging us to hold on to Garcia’s voice for very long, for it will not remain this way forever. As his voice deteriorates to the point where newcomers think the band would be better off without that Garcia guy singing, we will also notice our mental acuity fading; things once taken for granted are now a chore best left to the younger generation. The disconsolate feeling of lassitude that clouds nearly every aspect of our lives is voiced in one of the most devastating, fuzz-laden Stella outro solos Garcia has ever performed. The as-yet-to-be-experienced pain of growing old resonates. A stratospheric emotional high—behold a Stella to remember, a moment that few of us will ever forget."It's that kind of night. Glens Falls welcomes back Deadheads for the second time in less than a year for some minor league hockey rink action. From the drop of the puck Jerry and the boys decide it's gloves off as they rip into an Alabama Getaway>Promised Land. Other highlights include the first High Time of the eighties and a delirious LL>Supplication that rolls into a Ramble on Rose prompting your host to dish out these words:"The music walks us off the ledge into a place called home, where we are met by a recluse on the sofa, a cigarette dangling from a limp, pallid hand. The record player is on repeat. Our consciousness spins the vinyl while outside, meaningless life cycles. The leader of the band made a promise. We remembered the message before, but now we can’t, or won’t, be bothered. Jerry sings a personal “You know this song ain’t never gonna end” not once but twice. Never gonna end. What’s never gonna end? Music, math, and numbers. Thirty-three and a third revolutions per minute is our number. As long as it continues to spin, our fortress remains impenetrable, unbothered, and alone. The song is our solace. We hear it, we believe it. We know it to be true." We finally have to move towards some good music, with a nice Shakedown>Bertha powerful enough to transform one into an amoeba and back, surfacing as a hippy bully of all things.Far out, yes, things get extremely far out, even venturing into the world of litigation. Will the witness take the stand? An excerpt from Grateful Shows:"And to the law, I state the following: I represent myself. I rise. I fall. I promise to come clean and make amends for any past wrongdoings. I shall do my best to explain the quality of this Terrapin Station as penance.Terrapin is a terrestrial invocation of harmony. It plows the earth with sharp fingernails, exposing worms and other edibles, which it quickly snaps up in its jaws. It is uninterested in battling rabbits, foxes, or other animals Aesop has in his bag. It carries the weight of all our sins, which have long since hardened into a shell that slowly circles the show's perimeter. None of us is clean, nor are we guilty. We have all made mistakes, but what distinguishes us as humans is our ability to recognize them and, ultimately, our desire to rectify them."Now we are cookin' and talkin'.Playin' in the barn gets weirder from here, which isn't a bad thing, until the ultimate payoff , which comes in the form of a teeth-rattling Alabama Getaway encore. No time to waste, we've got a trio of Civic Centers on the docket. The answer, "It's complicated" is a rather round about way of saying "no". But as we all know, thoughts have a tendency to waver while between the dark and light.Oh there are moments, It's just that most of them are in the second set. There is more than a hint of worry going on during this tour. Row Jimmy had us wondering about health, both mental and physical. From your narrator:"Maybe the slide guitar solo has us in a trance, unable to offer the desperately needed intervention. Or is it because we need this just as much as they do? And both of us are reluctant to give it up. Not when the music is this smooth, anyway.Row Jimmy has been cleansing, as it has been troublesome. Yet ultimately, we see what we want. Our current observations are entirely speculative; none of the band members appears to be suffering from visible health issues; it must be the amplified paranoia talking. The Row Jimmy finishes with an array of levers pulled, buttons clicked, and plugs filled to ease our worried minds. Our fears mollified, we clap along with the rest of the crowd as the music segues into El Paso.”But that's enough from us. Set two at PSU, and we are loving the Grateful Dead opening with a Take A Step back, then throttling everyone with an out-of-control China>Rider. As usual, more football-related content is brought up.From I Know You Rider:"Bob says the sun is gonna shine someday. Nittany Lion faithful, you’ll eventually win your national championship. Just wait a couple more years—first, some gratitude. You wanted a China>Rider, and by God, you are getting a monster version. The northbound train runs unimpeded. It spits power. The room fills with smoke, projecting holographic images as fierce and powerful as Oz—an all-powerful manifestation of all that is good in the world. Karmic ash is burned and discarded; throw it all into the fire so that future trains can run on its fumes. Oh man, the Dead are bringing it tonight!"You don't want to miss this one. And look what's waiting in the wings, yes, Barton Hall, on the campus of Cornell University. The shows roll on, and so do we. Hopefully, you'll continue to partner along as we make our way northward, on a Northbound Train of our own making.═══📚 LINKS & RESOURCES🔗 Follow along with music on: Relisten🔗 Navigate The Series🗺 NAVIGATE THIS TOUR🎯 New to the show? The second night of tour brings us to Happy Valley, soon to be transformed into Even Happier Valley, or words to that effect.Right from the opening Alabama Getaway the band's mood is on display, but is this the right choice for a Penn State crowd?Join your narrator:"However, the Penn State faithful would like to forget about Alabama. The Grateful Dead are pouring salt into the Sugar Bowl wounds, which continue to fester despite the passage of a year and four months. And would you believe the Tide adds yet another national championship to its coffers while the beloved Nittany Lions languish in mediocrity? Well, tonight is the perfect vessel with which to deposit your pent-up injustice, disappointment, and SEC contempt.'I heard you pee in the courthouse?'C’mon, Jerry. Although it makes for captivating testimony, that absolutely cannot be a real lyric. Our disbelief leads to more lyrical missteps; it’s fourth and short, go for it. Garcia’s second solo of the evening gets the call. Jerry rips it, shredding through Dead-embedded heads. Whoa, Nelly! This Alabama is also a winner, but one we can get behind. Mission accomplished, but it’s never enough, though; we want the one-two punch, the quick transition, and the post-title arrow, which, it seems, we will get."Or words to that effect.Join us for a ripping first set and if you would be so kind, continue on to the next set, and the next show as we continue to tour, all the way up to Maine.═══📚 LINKS & RESOURCES🔗 Follow along with music on: Relisten🔗 Navigate The Series🗺 NAVIGATE THIS TOUR🎯 New to the show? It's game on in the second set with not only a Scarlet>Fire but a Playing In The Band that has one questioning their own sanity. To wit:"We find ourselves within an aural neuro-net, a string-like maze that offers no exit by design. We use Jerry’s innovative explorations to climb towards the Civic Center's summit. The silken ropes that bind our captured prey to the ceiling are cut, signaling the start of feeding time. An electric outpouring of sound and spirit covers the floor, the seats, and our clothing as we lap up the shiny, silvery mixture. If we are to make it through the drums and space segment, into the back end of the show, and onward to Pennsylvania, we must gorge ourselves sufficiently on tonight’s offerings. Dissonant, unrecognizable patterns of sound are the perfect background for finishing the gruesome task. The lack of cohesion offers privacy; the crowd’s attention is everywhere yet nowhere, and a suspension of belief permeates the floor. This Playing is extremely deep, in case you haven’t figured it out by now.And we haven't even gotten to the Black Peter."Next up, a short jaunt to Penn State University for more hijinx, as the east coast tour rolls on. Spoiler alert: it's not all rainbows and unicorns. The boys slog through plenty of grit and grime in this first set. Highlights include a rather harrowing All Over Now and the opening Half Step>Franklin's Tower. How about some El Paso-isms straight from the mouth of our narrator:"The El Paso trots into town, or the venue, whichever you prefer. We sincerely appreciate these tales of the wicked, wild West, filled with wild, wicked Western characters. The denizens of El Paso spit in the face of the 'strangers are just friends you haven’t met yet' crowd. However, certain protocols do apply.Handsome or ugly, a friend or a foe, please refrain from stealing other men's women. It’s bound to lead to duels, bullets, dust, horses drinking from leaky, rusty buckets, tumbleweed, and tumbling dice, not the ideal scenario for potential friendship."You can probably tell where this one is headed.═══📚 LINKS & RESOURCES🔗 Follow along with music on: Relisten🔗 Navigate The Series🗺 NAVIGATE THIS TOUR🎯 New to the show?
