He also addresses the misconception that Israel wants to occupy Gaza and emphasizes the role of pride in the pro-Palestinian movement. The conversation delves into the impact of resistance and terrorism, differentiating between resistance groups, and defining terrorism. It explores the role of the IDF and contrasts it with the systemic terrorism of Hamas. The conversation also addresses double standards and the perception of Israel as a terrorist group. It discusses the consequences of wrongdoing in the military and the importance of accountability in the laws of armed combat. The influence of misinformation and social media, as well as the shift in perception among younger generations, is examined. The conversation concludes with a discussion on the denial of historical atrocities and the fallacy of peace. Takeaways Understanding the historical context and personal experiences can shape one's support for a cause. War is a complex and morally neutral concept that requires critical thinking and decision-making. Deterrence plays a crucial role in maintaining security and preventing further conflict. Military operations involve strategic planning, staging the area, and gaining operational control. The presence of flags in a conflict zone signifies operational control, not a desire for permanent occupation. Pride can hinder progress and prevent meaningful dialogue in the pro-Palestinian movement. Understanding the impact of resistance and terrorism is crucial in analyzing conflicts. Differentiating between resistance groups and terrorist organizations is important for accurate assessment. The definition of terrorism involves inflicting terror on a people for political or religious means. The IDF plays a crucial role in defending the Jewish people and should not be condemned as a terrorist group. Hamas exhibits systemic terrorism, while the actions of IDF members are individual and subject to punishment. Double standards and biased responsibility attribution are prevalent in discussions surrounding Israel. The consequences of wrongdoing in the military are addressed through a structured system of accountability. Misinformation and social media play a significant role in shaping perceptions and opinions. The shift in perception among younger generations towards understanding the Israeli-Palestinian conflict is complex and multifaceted. Denial of historical atrocities perpetuates conflict and hinders reconciliation efforts. The pursuit of peace requires a nuanced understanding of historical context and a commitment to accountability. Episode 18 - To Be a Realist in Israel is to Believe in Miracles (with Rabbi Litvin)
Rabbi Litvin discusses his background as a rabbi in Kentucky and the rich Jewish history in the state. He shares his personal journey to becoming a rabbi and the impact his parents had on his decision. The conversation then delves into the significance of Israel and the transformative experience of visiting the country. He also addresses the issue of religions that choose hate and the differences between Judaism, Christianity, and Islam. The conversation concludes with a discussion on the misconceptions surrounding borders and the two-state solution in Israel. The conversation covers various topics related to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, including misinformation, the right of return, the refugee crisis, the concept of miracles in Israeli wars, and the war on Abrahamic faiths. It also discusses the debunking of false arguments, leadership and corruption, the insanity of anti-Semitism, and the significance of the Abraham Accords. Rabbi Shlomo Litvin is an emissary of the Lubavitcher Rebbe, Rabbi Menachem Mendel Schneerson, the foremost Jewish leader in American History and the one individual more than any other singularly responsible for stirring the conscience and spiritual awakening of world Jewry. Rabbi Litvin together with his wife Shoshi serves as Director of Chabad of the Bluegrass, eastern Kentucky's branch of Chabad Lubavitch, the largest worldwide Jewish organization. They also run Chabad's Jewish Student Center at the University of Kentucky. Rabbi Litvin is the second rabbi in Kentucky's history to be born in the commonwealth and return to Kentucky to serve his community. He is a proud graduate of Louisville Jewish Day School, the only Jewish school in the Commonwealth, and of Tomchei Tmimim in Israel. He resides in Lexington with his wife Shoshi, and their 7 young children Kah. Takeaways Kentucky has a rich Jewish history dating back to 1790, and there are currently around 2,000 Jews in the Lexington Greater Area. The significance of Israel lies in its status as the only Jewish majority state in the world and its historical and religious importance. Religions that choose hate often rely on replacement theology and deny the legitimacy of other faiths. The mass revelation at Sinai is a central belief in Judaism, where 3.5 million people witnessed God's presence and heard His words. The concept of borders and the two-state solution in Israel is complex, with historical and political implications that require careful consideration. Misinformation and biased articles can lead to misguided debates and misunderstandings about the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. The concept of the right of return for Palestinians is complex and requires a nuanced understanding of historical context. The refugee crisis and the lack of countries willing to take in Jewish refugees highlights the importance of Israel's right of return. The belief in miracles plays a significant role in the Israeli wars and the establishment of Israel as a nation. Anti-Semitism and the war on Abrahamic faiths contribute to the complexity of the conflict and hinder the search for peace. The Abraham Accords have the potential to bring about positive change and promote peace in the region. The conversation delves into the Ottoman Empire's influence on nationalism in the Middle East and the Arab perception of Jewish statehood. The discussion also addresses misconceptions about Middle Eastern skin color and the insular nature of communities in the region. Rensy highlights the manipulation of history in the Arab world and the rise of propaganda. The conversation concludes with a focus on the cultural diversity and unity in Israel. Then, Maz and Amanda discuss various aspects of Arab culture, including repressive beliefs, selective freedom, lack of democratic values, and tolerance to corruption. He also explores the influence of Islam on culture and the phenomena of posturing and extremism. Maz highlights the importance of understanding the cultural context and the need for self-reflection and change within Arab societies. In this conversation, Maz discusses various topics related to religious beliefs, attitudes towards the West, conspiracy beliefs, and the role of authoritative governments. Maz highlights the need for self-reflection and the acceptance of flaws within religious beliefs to combat extremism. He also emphasizes the importance of understanding the diversity within the Arab world and avoiding the assumption of a single entity. Maz discusses the siege mentality prevalent in the Middle East and suggests that supporting authoritative governments may be a pragmatic approach to maintaining stability. He concludes by expressing his love for Jordan and its national identity. Takeaways The Arab perception of Jewish statehood is influenced by a long history of control and oppression, making it difficult for them to accept an independent Jewish state. Misconceptions about Middle Eastern skin color contribute to the erasure of Mizrahi and Sephardic Jews and their connection to the Middle East. The education system in the Arab world often teaches a distorted version of history, leading to a lack of understanding about the Jewish presence in the region. Israel is a melting pot of cultures and traditions, with Jews from different parts of the world bringing their own customs and contributing to the Israeli culture. Unity and integration among different Jewish communities in Israel have been achieved over time, creating a sense of shared identity and purpose. Arab culture is characterized by repressive beliefs and a lack of individual freedoms, which stem from both the government and the individuals themselves. There is a tendency in Arab culture to value intentions over competence, leading to a lack of progress and development. Arab societies often lack democratic values, such as the separation of powers and the peaceful transfer of power. Tribalism and religious beliefs play a significant role in Arab culture, influencing social norms and values. Posturing is common in Arab societies, where individuals may express extreme beliefs but do not take action to support them. Understanding the cultural context is crucial for addressing the challenges and issues within Arab societies. Self-reflection and acceptance of flaws within religious beliefs are necessary to combat extremism. The Arab world should not be viewed as a single entity, but rather as a diverse collection of countries with different views and ideas. The siege mentality prevalent in the Middle East contributes to conspiracy beliefs and a lack of understanding of the West. Havtam emphasizes the need to protect lives and communities and challenges misconceptions about the IDF's actions. She also discusses the impact of terror attacks on daily life and calls for Hamas to surrender to bring an end to the conflict. Havtam shares her pride in being an Israeli and addresses claims of genocide and sterilization, emphasizing the importance of focusing on building peace and combating racism. The conversation covers the treatment of African refugees in Israel, disappointment with Black Lives Matter, and the focus on Hamas in relation to the Ethiopian people. Takeaways Misconceptions and offensive comments about Ethiopian Jews by pro-Palestinians are deeply hurtful and offensive. The IDF plays a crucial role in protecting lives and communities in Israel, and its actions are not motivated by a desire for conquest or genocide. Living with the constant threat of terror attacks is a reality for Israelis, and the IDF provides a sense of security. Addressing racism and human rights issues in Israel is an ongoing process, but it is important to focus on building a better future rather than dwelling on past injustices. Israel provides a safe haven for refugees from countries like Eritrea and Sudan, offering them opportunities for work and a better life. African refugees in Israel have faced mistreatment and discrimination, including being denied basic necessities like water and food. The speaker expresses disappointment with Black Lives Matter for not addressing the racism faced by Afro-Palestinian people. The Ethiopian people are asking for help with the issue of Hamas, rather than focusing solely on racism. The conversation highlights the need for greater awareness and action on these issues. Preserving cultural heritage and history is important for understanding the complexities of the conflict. Ideological consistency and a commitment to democracy and human rights are essential in shaping foreign policy. Foreign policy in the early days of America was influenced by the desire to curb the growth of slavery and slave states. The argument that being a Semite means one cannot be anti-Semitic is flawed and shows a lack of understanding of historical context. Jews who do not engage in traditional Judaism and tokenize themselves are stripping Judaism of its core tenets and empowering Jew haters. It highlights the lack of understanding about war among men in the country and the challenges of finding a political solution to extremism. The conversation also discusses misunderstandings about military practices and the different perspectives on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Ep. 3 - You've Been Lied to about Israeli Settlements (with Rabbi Uri Pilchowski)
There's a lot of misinformation online about Israel's settlement activity in the West Bank, so this week, I decided to set the record straight with Rabbi Uri Pilchowski. He is a Rabbi and educator that lives in a settlement in Judea and Samaria, also known as the West Bank or disputed territory. Rabbi Pilchowski explains what living in a settlement is actually like, and dispels some myths and lies told about them. I also give the background history of the settlements and answer some questions about them at the end of this episode. I really hope you guys like this one, it was really fun to make! Episode 2 - The UN is No Saint with Jess (Jewish Israeli on Tik Tok)
The United Nations and other IGOs/NGOs are looked at as some bastion of global human rights, but in reality that's not the case. When discussing the Arab/Israeli conflict and the plight of the Palestinian people, the UN is often the cause of those problems or makes it worse. We also discuss war crimes and the Geneva Conventions, which are overseen by the UN. Israel does not commit war crimes, but Hamas does commit war crimes. The UN is notorious for the double standards in handing out condemnations and bringing up war crimes against Israel, but giving a blind eye to terrorist groups within the Palestinian territories.
