She’s remembered as a legendary singer-songwriter, country superstar, LGBQT icon and champion for kids literacy, but she was also very important in telling the stories of working class women. In the comedy 9 to 5, with Jane Fonda and Lily Tomlin, Dolly centered women working in offices (often treated as objects and second class citizens) into subversive underdogs. The part that few people know is that movie was inspired by a real life movement of women workers who challenged these power dynamics in the corporate offices. Then support independent media channels like the Green and Red Podcast at https://www.patreon.com/greenredpodcast or https://greenandredpodcast.org/donate-to-green-and-red/.After decades organizing from within the labor establishment, Joe Uehlein realized that winning real climate and economic justice meant moving beyond the limits of traditional labor and environmentalism. As former secretary-treasurer of the AFL-CIO’s Industrial Division and director of the AFL-CIO's Center for Strategic Campaigns, Joe fought from the inside. But in 2005, he stepped away from the AFL-CIO to found the Labor Network for Sustainability, forging deep alliances between labor, climate, and environmental movements. His vision: transform the labor movement to embrace ecological responsibility—and environmentalism to uplift working-class solidarity. But Joe’s work has never been confined to boardrooms or picket lines. With a guitar in hand, he’s shared stages with Pete Seeger and Tom Morello, turning songs into rallying cries and stories into tools for resistance. In our latest, we're excited to talk with legendary labor and climate organizer Joe Uehlein (@joeuehlein) about his new memoir that details his life's work of labor organizing, climate organizing and music. What is Socialism in America? Clearing up the lies and smears . . . (G&R 518)
🎉 Don't like liberal media attacks on the Left? Then support independent media channels like the Green and Red Podcast at https://www.patreon.com/greenredpodcast or https://greenandredpodcast.org/donate-to-green-and-red/. The spectre of socialism is haunting America . . . Bizarrely enough in 2026, a new Red Scare has taken over American politics, with the GOP, the Democratic Establishment, plenty of media, and liberals raising alarms about the recent success of candidates identifying as Democratic Socialists and Progressives, especially those endorsed by the political group the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA). Given Trump's various crises, invoking the threat of socialism (and more preposterously Communism) has become the GOP's 2026 midterm strategy, and Democratic leaders like Schumer and Jeffries and old boys like James Carville have jumped on the bandwagon, punching left to warn that DSA candidates and progressives like Abdul El-Sayed in Michigan will not be electable and that the Democrats have to reject the Left and vote for what they call centrists or moderates. So Scott and Bob and their comrade and frequent guest Professor Clayton Lust got together to discuss what socialism really means in America. Unlike European or 3rd World socialism the development of a socialist ideology or political movement never really took root in America. What did happen was an expansion of the state's role in the economy--sometimes brought about by socialists like the "gas and water socialists" in the Progressive area--to create programs and laws that would address economic crises and provide government help not just to capitalists but to working people--best demonstrated by New Deal programs to ameliorate the poverty and unemployment of the depression. After that, those types of programs, better described as social democratic or, more recently, democratic socialist, did not challenge private ownership of the means of production or try to transfer power to working people. They continued to seek programs to help struggling people . . . as in LBJ's Great Society. In fact, these programs were so popular that Republican presidents Eisenhower and Nixon promoted policies on labor, wages, and housing similar to the New Deal. Finally we talked about what groups like DSA are doing today and how it's not a socialist threat to democracy or capitalism but a movement to create programs on housing, food, jobs, and other issues that impact working people. Guest bio//Clayton Lust (@profclaytonlust.bsky.social) is a historian, activist, teacher, conqueror and warper of minds.---------------------------------Outro// "Green and Red Blues" by Moody💚 Support the Green and Red Podcast🎉 Become a Patron: https://www.patreon.com/greenredpodcast☕ One-time donation: https://bit.ly/DonateGandR🎙️ Follow Green and Red🔗 Linktree: https://linktr.ee/greenandredpodcast🌐 Website: https://greenandredpodcast.org🌍 Our Networks🎧 Labor Podcast Network: https://www.laborradionetwork.org📢 Anti-Capitalist Podcast Network: https://linktr.ee/anticapitalistpodcastnetwork📻 Listen on WAMF (90.3 FM) New Orleans: https://wamf.org✊ Worker Power Radio: https://workerpowerradio.ismyradio.com/🎬 A Green and Red Podcast production👨🏫 Produced by Bob (@bobbuzzanco) and Scott (@sparki1969)✂️ Edited by Scott🔔 Subscribe for more analysis on U.S. politics, leftist strategy, and anti-establishment resistance.

Then support independent media channels like the Green and Red Podcast at https://www.patreon.com/greenredpodcast or https://greenandredpodcast.org/donate-to-green-and-red/. The Little Falls Textile Strike of 1912-1913 was a pivotal but long-neglected event in American labor history. The story includes the dramatic struggle of immigrant women against powerful mill owners, brutal police repression, and a hostile press as they fought for their dignity and survival. The history chronicles how a walkout over reduced wages grew into a major labor conflict, drawing in powerful allies like the Industrial Workers of the World (IWW), the socialist government of nearby Schenectady, and nationally recognized figures such as Helen Keller and "Big Bill" Haywood.Central to the narrative is the courageous work of nurse Helen Schloss, who, while hired by the town's elite to combat tuberculosis, ended up exposing her employers' husbands as the owners of the city's worst slums. Fifty years ago, America celebrated its bicentennial with a coast-to-coast displays of bunting, flags, community ceremonies, and constant talk about "hope" and "unity." Now as we face our semi-quincentennial, the country is riven worse than it has been in at least a century, and perhaps since the civil war. What happened in those intervening 50 years?Scott and Bob, joined by frequent contributor and comrade Clayton Lust, discussed the world in 1976 and how it changed to bring us where we area today. We talked about politics--in particular how the Democratic Party, at the height of its post-Watergate power, moved rightward to promote neo-liberalism and pave the way for Reaganis. We discussed the massive economic shifts--brought on by deindustrialization, a huge decrease in union work, lower wages, and higher prices. And we discussed the cultural shifts that the era brought us--the popularity of Saturday Night Live, hopeful movies like Rocky with more bleak films like Network or Taxi Driver, and the creation of new music genres like punk and rap.In all, in 5 decades, we've seen a huge transformation from hope and national pride, to division, anger, and even violence.Guest bio//Prof. Clayton Lust (@profclaytonlust.bsky.social)- Historian, activist, teacher, conqueror, warper of minds. The Rise and Fall of the Earth Liberation Front w/ author Matthew Wolfe (G&R 498)
🎉 Support Green and Red Podcast and other great events like this panel at https://www.patreon.com/greenredpodcast. In 1996, the first of a series of arsons burned down the Oakridge Ranger Station in Oregon. More followed, as well as a massive federal investigation of the Earth Liberation Front (ELF). Their targets—car dealerships, slaughterhouses, lumber companies, a $12 million Vail ski resort—were chosen to send a message: if the government wouldn’t halt the destruction of the natural world, they would. Despite causing no deaths, the ELF would soon be branded the foremost domestic terrorism threat in America and become the target of one of the FBI’s largest investigations. Ultimately, with the help of an informant in the group, law enforcement was able to make arrests of the group. In our latest, Scott talks with Matthew Wolfe, author of "Fires in the Night: The Earth Liberation Fron, the FBI and the Secret History of Eco-Sabotage", and discussed the origins of the ELF, who they were, what motivated them, how they were able to pull off the actions for so long and how they eventually were caught. They also talk about the reassessment happening today of the ELF in the wake of ongoing climate and political crises. Guest Bio- Matthew Wolfe’s reporting has appeared in the New York Times Magazine, Harper’s, the Atlantic, National Geographic, and the New Republic. SPECIAL ENCORE: The King David Hotel Bombing and 79 Years of Zionist Terrorism
Support Green and Red Podcast and get the latest at https://www.patreon.com/greenredpodcast.It's the 78th anniversary the Nakba. The Nakba, meaning "catastrophe" in Arabic, refers to the mass displacement, dispossession, and ethnic cleansing of roughly 750,000 Palestinian Arabs during the 1948 Arab-Israeli war. It marks the destruction of Palestinian society, the destruction of over 400 villages, and the prevention of return for refugees. We're reposting short audio from last year about Israeli terrorists blowing up the King David Hotel in Jerusalem to commemorate the Nakba. This incident was one of many terrorist actions by the Irgun that drove the British out of Palestine and led to the Nakba two years later.--------------On July 22, 1946, Terrorists from the Irgun, a Zionist paramilitary group in Palestine led by Menachem Begin, blew up part of the King David Hotel in Jerusalem, which was the headquarters of the British Mandate in Palestine. The explicit goal was to use terror to drive the British out of the region, and the blast killed 91--mostly civilians, about 30 Britons, and about 20 Jews. The attack met its goal as the British were driven out of Palestine and Israel was created 2 years later. The King David bombing showed that terrorism worked and set into motion 8 decades of continued terror from Israel, and it shows, again, that there is no historical basis for using October 7, 2023 as a point of origin to discuss this issue.———————🎙️ Follow Green and Red🔗 Linktree: https://linktr.ee/greenandredpodcast🌐 Website: https://greenandredpodcast.org📰 Follow on Substack: https://greenandredpodcast.substack.com💚 Support the Green and Red Podcast🎉 Become a Patron: https://www.patreon.com/greenredpodcast☕ One-time Donation: https://bit.ly/DonateGandR🌍 Our Networks🎧 Labor Podcast Network: https://www.laborradionetwork.org📢 Anti-Capitalist Podcast Network: https://linktr.ee/anticapitalistpodcastnetwork📻 WAMF (90.3 FM) New Orleans: https://wamf.org🏆 Top 100 Activist Podcasts: https://bit.ly/4eHNt1f🎬 A Green and Red Podcast production👨🏫 Produced by Bob (@bobbuzzanco) and Scott (@sparki1969)✂️ Edited by Bob🔔 Subscribe for more history, political resistance, and anti-imperialist analysis.

Support Green and Red Podcast and get analysis on U.S. politics, leftist strategy, and anti-establishment resistance at https://www.patreon.com/greenredpodcast.It's the 56th anniversary of the killings at Kent State University. In a special encore episode, we're reposting our episode from 2020.In this episode, we commemorate the anniversary of the tragic events of May 4th, 1970 at Kent State University, where agents of the state murdered 4 students and shot 9 others. Students, who'd been told the war was winding down in Vietnam, erupted in protest at campuses all over America when Richard Nixon announced the U.S. invasion of Cambodia on April 30th. At Kent State, a working-class public school in Northeast Ohio, protesting students and other burned down an ROTC building, a common target in the Vietnam protest era, and Ohio Governor James Rhodes, vowing a violent response, mobilized the National Guard and sent them to Kent. For two days the students and Guard skirmished, with the paramilitaries hurling tear gas and intimidating students. On May 4th, the Guard, unprovoked, started shooting into the crowd of students and shot 13, killing 4, from distances beyond 300 feet. These were extrajudicial killings and a sure sign the state would murder anyone who challenged its interests. The war had come home! Scott and Bob, who's also a historian of the Vietnam War and the 1960s and has published extensively on those subjects, talk about the background to the protests, the official, violent response, the aftermath at places like Jackson State, where 2 more students were killed, and the larger context of anti-state protests and their meaning, and lessons.----------Outro// "Green and Red Blues" by Moody🔗 Links//🌐 Kent State Tribunal Organization, established by Laurel Krause, sister of one of the students assassinated that day (https://bit.ly/3w2spdR);interview with Alan Canfora, one of the survivors of the shootings (https://bit.ly/3OUyjGq);🌐 The Kent State May 4th Poetry Collection; Denise Levertov, "The Day the Audience Walked Out on Me, and Why" (https://bit.ly/3kIVyFv);🌐 Governor Rhodes press conference, May 3 (https://bit.ly/37cIk0R);🌐 Robert Buzzanco, Vietnam and the Transformation of American Life (https://bit.ly/3kB21ST).💚 Support the Green and Red Podcast🎉 Become a Patron: https://www.patreon.com/greenredpodcast☕ One-time donation: https://bit.ly/DonateGandR🎙️ Follow Green and Red🔗 Linktree: https://linktr.ee/greenandredpodcast🌐 Website: https://greenandredpodcast.org🌍 Our Networks🎧 Labor Podcast Network: https://www.laborradionetwork.org📢 Anti-Capitalist Podcast Network: https://linktr.ee/anticapitalistpodcastnetwork📻 Listen on WAMF (90.3 FM) New Orleans: https://wamf.org💫 LIVE Green and Red Podcast Event on May 21st in Berkley: "Radicals, Realists, and Repression: The State of Activism in the U.S." (RSVP here- https://bit.ly/3QFR1XO)🎬 A Green and Red Podcast production👨🏫 Produced by Bob (@bobbuzzanco) and Scott (@sparki1969✂️ Edited by Scott🔔 Subscribe for more analysis on U.S. politics, leftist strategy, and anti-establishment resistance.

We close with a conversation about the recent attempt at beagle liberation at Ridglan Farms in Wisconsin.Guest bio//Will Potter (@will_potter) is a thought leader and award winning investigative journalist and author whose work has focused on social justice movements and attacks on civil rights post-9/11. Despite Ceasefires, Israel Continues the "Gaza-ification" of Lebanon w/ Journalist Hanady Salman (G&R 488)
Israel's brutal campaign against Lebanon launched on March 2 has run parallel to the U.S.-Israeli war against Iran. When Trump and Iran declared a ceasefire in the second week of April, on terms that included a ceasefire in Lebanon, Israel launched a brutal bombing campaign on April 8th attacking over 100 targets in ten minutes. Israel's war against Iran-backed Hezbollah has targeted civilian infrastructure, journalists, medics and civilian populations. Israel is using the same playbook that it's used in occupied Palestine, and appears to be trying to turn southern Lebanon into another Gaza. In our latest, Scott talks with Lebanese journalist Hanady Salman about the war being fought between Israel and Hezbollah, the attacks on civilians and infrastructure, the negotiations and more. Guest Bio//Hanady Salman is a journalist based in Beirut. She contributed to the book Inside Lebanon. The film “Letters from Beirut: the War of 33” is based on her writings. War Inside the Pentagon? The Military vs. Trump and Hegseth (G&R 487)
Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth has initiated a major overhaul of the Pentagon leadership, firing over a dozen high-ranking military officials, including Army Chief of Staff Gen. Randy George, Joint Chiefs Chairman Gen. CQ Brown Jr., and Adm. Lisa Franchetti. The moves, often executed without specific reasons, are part of a broader, controversial effort to remove officers deemed misaligned with the administration's priorities. Hegseth has also faced intense criticism for declaring that "no quarter" would be given to enemies in Iran, a statement interpreted as ordering troops to kill surrendering combatants, which is a war crime under international law.The actions have caused friction with leaders like Army Secretary Dan Driscoll and increasing skepticism of the administration's competency in waging wars.In our latest, we talk about the war inside the Pentagon between military leadership and Trump and Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth. It's also the anniversary of the Vietnam Vets Against the War founding (April 15, 1967) and one of their most known mass actions, Dewey Canyon III (April 19-21, 1971) and discuss why military dissent is important.------------------------🎸 Outro- "Green and Red Blues" by Moody🔗 Links🌐 How Vets are Resisting the War in Iran w/ Anti-War Veteran Zack Henson (https://bit.ly/47IdHMT)🌐 Trump at War with the Military?
