Rainforest Radicals: The History of Rainforest Action Network w/ Prof. David Benac (G&R 501)
🎉 Independent media is more vital than ever. Support Green and Red Podcast at https://www.patreon.com/greenredpodcast or https://greenandredpodcast.org/donate-to-green-and-red/. Rainforest Action Network (RAN) emerged in 1985, when it took over a fledgling effort to protect rainforests from transnational corporations funding the expansion of tropical cattle ranching. It excelled at using nonviolent, civil disobedience in dramatic campaigns that captured the attention of the public, media, and RAN’s corporate adversaries. In our latest, Scott, joined by guest co-host Laurel Sutherlin, talks with Prof. David Benac (History Dept., Western Michigan University) about his new book on Rainforest Action Network. They discuss it's roots in Earth First!, international forest campaigns and Indigenous solidarity. They also discuss its anti-corporate campaign strategies and the relevance of RAN's campaign work today. Guest Bio// David Benac is an environmental and public historian of the post-WWII United States at Western Michigan University. His research investigates how people act on their perceptions of nature, the science of ecology, and the philosophy of ecocentrism. He is the author of "Rainforest Radicals: A History of Rainforest Action Network and Transnational Organizing," that explores the radical environmental movement of the late twentieth century and the formation of international coalitions of grassroots groups devoted to supporting indigenous rights and environmental protections. Guest Host Bio//Laurel Sutherlin is a naturalist, environmental advocate, and the co-host of the weekly program Nature Nuggets on Radio Kingston in New York's Hudson Valley. The Rise and Fall of the Earth Liberation Front w/ author Matthew Wolfe (G&R 498)
🎉 Support Green and Red Podcast and other great events like this panel at https://www.patreon.com/greenredpodcast. In 1996, the first of a series of arsons burned down the Oakridge Ranger Station in Oregon. More followed, as well as a massive federal investigation of the Earth Liberation Front (ELF). Their targets—car dealerships, slaughterhouses, lumber companies, a $12 million Vail ski resort—were chosen to send a message: if the government wouldn’t halt the destruction of the natural world, they would. Despite causing no deaths, the ELF would soon be branded the foremost domestic terrorism threat in America and become the target of one of the FBI’s largest investigations. Ultimately, with the help of an informant in the group, law enforcement was able to make arrests of the group. In our latest, Scott talks with Matthew Wolfe, author of "Fires in the Night: The Earth Liberation Fron, the FBI and the Secret History of Eco-Sabotage", and discussed the origins of the ELF, who they were, what motivated them, how they were able to pull off the actions for so long and how they eventually were caught. They also talk about the reassessment happening today of the ELF in the wake of ongoing climate and political crises. Guest Bio- Matthew Wolfe’s reporting has appeared in the New York Times Magazine, Harper’s, the Atlantic, National Geographic, and the New Republic. 🎉 Support Green and Red Podcast and get the latest at https://www.patreon.com/greenredpodcast.Trump’s war on universities , DEI and student activism have been well documented over the past 18 months. SPECIAL ENCORE: The King David Hotel Bombing and 79 Years of Zionist Terrorism
Support Green and Red Podcast and get the latest at https://www.patreon.com/greenredpodcast.It's the 78th anniversary the Nakba. The Nakba, meaning "catastrophe" in Arabic, refers to the mass displacement, dispossession, and ethnic cleansing of roughly 750,000 Palestinian Arabs during the 1948 Arab-Israeli war. It marks the destruction of Palestinian society, the destruction of over 400 villages, and the prevention of return for refugees. We're reposting short audio from last year about Israeli terrorists blowing up the King David Hotel in Jerusalem to commemorate the Nakba. This incident was one of many terrorist actions by the Irgun that drove the British out of Palestine and led to the Nakba two years later.--------------On July 22, 1946, Terrorists from the Irgun, a Zionist paramilitary group in Palestine led by Menachem Begin, blew up part of the King David Hotel in Jerusalem, which was the headquarters of the British Mandate in Palestine. The explicit goal was to use terror to drive the British out of the region, and the blast killed 91--mostly civilians, about 30 Britons, and about 20 Jews. The attack met its goal as the British were driven out of Palestine and Israel was created 2 years later. The King David bombing showed that terrorism worked and set into motion 8 decades of continued terror from Israel, and it shows, again, that there is no historical basis for using October 7, 2023 as a point of origin to discuss this issue.———————🎙️ Follow Green and Red🔗 Linktree: https://linktr.ee/greenandredpodcast🌐 Website: https://greenandredpodcast.org📰 Follow on Substack: https://greenandredpodcast.substack.com💚 Support the Green and Red Podcast🎉 Become a Patron: https://www.patreon.com/greenredpodcast☕ One-time Donation: https://bit.ly/DonateGandR🌍 Our Networks🎧 Labor Podcast Network: https://www.laborradionetwork.org📢 Anti-Capitalist Podcast Network: https://linktr.ee/anticapitalistpodcastnetwork📻 WAMF (90.3 FM) New Orleans: https://wamf.org🏆 Top 100 Activist Podcasts: https://bit.ly/4eHNt1f🎬 A Green and Red Podcast production👨🏫 Produced by Bob (@bobbuzzanco) and Scott (@sparki1969)✂️ Edited by Bob🔔 Subscribe for more history, political resistance, and anti-imperialist analysis.

Best of G&R: Tin Soldiers and Nixon's Coming . . . 56 Years After the Kent State Killings (G&R 492)
Support Green and Red Podcast and get analysis on U.S. politics, leftist strategy, and anti-establishment resistance at https://www.patreon.com/greenredpodcast.It's the 56th anniversary of the killings at Kent State University. In a special encore episode, we're reposting our episode from 2020.In this episode, we commemorate the anniversary of the tragic events of May 4th, 1970 at Kent State University, where agents of the state murdered 4 students and shot 9 others. Students, who'd been told the war was winding down in Vietnam, erupted in protest at campuses all over America when Richard Nixon announced the U.S. invasion of Cambodia on April 30th. At Kent State, a working-class public school in Northeast Ohio, protesting students and other burned down an ROTC building, a common target in the Vietnam protest era, and Ohio Governor James Rhodes, vowing a violent response, mobilized the National Guard and sent them to Kent. For two days the students and Guard skirmished, with the paramilitaries hurling tear gas and intimidating students. On May 4th, the Guard, unprovoked, started shooting into the crowd of students and shot 13, killing 4, from distances beyond 300 feet. These were extrajudicial killings and a sure sign the state would murder anyone who challenged its interests. The war had come home! Scott and Bob, who's also a historian of the Vietnam War and the 1960s and has published extensively on those subjects, talk about the background to the protests, the official, violent response, the aftermath at places like Jackson State, where 2 more students were killed, and the larger context of anti-state protests and their meaning, and lessons.----------Outro// "Green and Red Blues" by Moody🔗 Links//🌐 Kent State Tribunal Organization, established by Laurel Krause, sister of one of the students assassinated that day (https://bit.ly/3w2spdR);interview with Alan Canfora, one of the survivors of the shootings (https://bit.ly/3OUyjGq);🌐 The Kent State May 4th Poetry Collection; Denise Levertov, "The Day the Audience Walked Out on Me, and Why" (https://bit.ly/3kIVyFv);🌐 Governor Rhodes press conference, May 3 (https://bit.ly/37cIk0R);🌐 Robert Buzzanco, Vietnam and the Transformation of American Life (https://bit.ly/3kB21ST).💚 Support the Green and Red Podcast🎉 Become a Patron: https://www.patreon.com/greenredpodcast☕ One-time donation: https://bit.ly/DonateGandR🎙️ Follow Green and Red🔗 Linktree: https://linktr.ee/greenandredpodcast🌐 Website: https://greenandredpodcast.org🌍 Our Networks🎧 Labor Podcast Network: https://www.laborradionetwork.org📢 Anti-Capitalist Podcast Network: https://linktr.ee/anticapitalistpodcastnetwork📻 Listen on WAMF (90.3 FM) New Orleans: https://wamf.org💫 LIVE Green and Red Podcast Event on May 21st in Berkley: "Radicals, Realists, and Repression: The State of Activism in the U.S." (RSVP here- https://bit.ly/3QFR1XO)🎬 A Green and Red Podcast production👨🏫 Produced by Bob (@bobbuzzanco) and Scott (@sparki1969✂️ Edited by Scott🔔 Subscribe for more analysis on U.S. politics, leftist strategy, and anti-establishment resistance.

Despite Ceasefires, Israel Continues the "Gaza-ification" of Lebanon w/ Journalist Hanady Salman (G&R 488)
Israel's brutal campaign against Lebanon launched on March 2 has run parallel to the U.S.-Israeli war against Iran. When Trump and Iran declared a ceasefire in the second week of April, on terms that included a ceasefire in Lebanon, Israel launched a brutal bombing campaign on April 8th attacking over 100 targets in ten minutes. Israel's war against Iran-backed Hezbollah has targeted civilian infrastructure, journalists, medics and civilian populations. Israel is using the same playbook that it's used in occupied Palestine, and appears to be trying to turn southern Lebanon into another Gaza. War Inside the Pentagon? The Military vs. Trump and Hegseth (G&R 487)
Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth has initiated a major overhaul of the Pentagon leadership, firing over a dozen high-ranking military officials, including Army Chief of Staff Gen. Randy George, Joint Chiefs Chairman Gen. CQ Brown Jr., and Adm. Lisa Franchetti. The moves, often executed without specific reasons, are part of a broader, controversial effort to remove officers deemed misaligned with the administration's priorities. Hegseth has also faced intense criticism for declaring that "no quarter" would be given to enemies in Iran, a statement interpreted as ordering troops to kill surrendering combatants, which is a war crime under international law.The actions have caused friction with leaders like Army Secretary Dan Driscoll and increasing skepticism of the administration's competency in waging wars.In our latest, we talk about the war inside the Pentagon between military leadership and Trump and Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth. It's also the anniversary of the Vietnam Vets Against the War founding (April 15, 1967) and one of their most known mass actions, Dewey Canyon III (April 19-21, 1971) and discuss why military dissent is important.------------------------🎸 Outro- "Green and Red Blues" by Moody🔗 Links🌐 How Vets are Resisting the War in Iran w/ Anti-War Veteran Zack Henson (https://bit.ly/47IdHMT)🌐 Trump at War with the Military? From Montgomery to Memphis to Minneapolis: The Legacy of Martin Luther King (G&R 457)
It's MLK Day weekend. We discuss the radical legacy of King. His opposition to the Vietnam war, the Poor Peoples' Campaign, hiscampaign to boycott the 1968 Olympics and his socialist politics. We then discuss his influence in the resistance to state violence that we're seeing today in the streets of Minneapolis and other places. We're in a critical point where great forces are trying to break the legacy of Dr. King. Our message remains the same as his, make trouble, misbehave and get into the streets!-------------------🎸 Outro- "Green and Red Blues" by Moody🔗 Links🌐 Buzzanco: MLK for Sale (http://bit.ly/2LzGR9S)🌐 Martin Luther King on riots and property destruction (http://bit.ly/3nHPvAk)🌐 VIDEO: Beyond Vietnam - A Time to Break Silence (https://bit.ly/3spBgnr)🎙️ Follow Green and Red🔗 Linktree: https://linktr.ee/greenandredpodcast🌐 Website: https://greenandredpodcast.org💬 Join our Discord community: https://discord.gg/uuP6yVQr📰 Follow us on Substack: https://greenandredpodcast.substack.com🌌 Follow us on Bluesky: https://bsky.app/profile/podcastgreenred.bsky.social💚 Support the Green and Red Podcast🎉 Become a Patron: https://www.patreon.com/greenredpodcast☕ One-time donation: https://bit.ly/DonateGandR🌍 Our Networks🎧 Labor Podcast Network: https://www.laborradionetwork.org📢 Anti-Capitalist Podcast Network: https://linktr.ee/anticapitalistpodcastnetwork📻 Listen on WAMF (90.3 FM) New Orleans: https://wamf.org🎬 A Green and Red Podcast production👨🏫 Produced by Bob (@bobbuzzanco) and Scott (@sparki1969)✂️ Edited by Scott🔔 Subscribe for more analysis on U.S. politics, leftist strategy, and anti-establishment resistance.
