Ep 66 Green Talks - Featuring Smita Mathur, Owner SV Farms

Ep 66 Green Talks - Featuring Smita Mathur, Owner SV FarmsA few years ago, Smita and her husband bought a small piece of land near a grassland, a spot they often visited for birdwatching. Drawn by the natural beauty and the promise of a canal nearby, they made the leap — despite having no background in farming. However, after the purchase, they discovered the land was far from fertile — it was barren, stony, and dry. The "canal" was more myth than reality. What was once a dry, lifeless plot is now a green haven. Their land is alive with birds, stingless bees that help with pollination, dogs, and even small animals who have started finding shelter among the growing trees and shrubs. Birdwatching is no longer just a weekend hobby — it’s a daily delight from their doorstep.

    Stop using Tissue paper

Reducing tissue paper usage in your family can have significant environmental and economic benefits. It can help reduce deforestation and minimize environmental harm. Encourage sustainable alternatives to tissue paper: Cloth Napkins and Towels: Use reusable cloth for wiping hands, cleaning spills, or dining. They can be washed and reused many times. Handkerchiefs: Promote the use of handkerchiefs instead of facial tissues for personal use. Bidets or Water Sprayers: Install a bidet or a handheld water sprayer in bathrooms to reduce the need for toilet paper. Stop use of Tissue Paper

Reducing the use of tissue paper for every small issue is a great way to minimize paper waste and be more environmentally conscious. Here are some tips on how you can reduce your use of tissue paper: Use reusable alternatives: Consider using reusable cloth handkerchiefs or towels instead of disposable tissue paper. Keep a small cloth handkerchief with you for wiping hands or cleaning small spills. Limit use: Be mindful of how much tissue paper you use for each task. Tear off only what you need and avoid using more than necessary. Use both sides: If you do use tissue paper, try to use both sides before disposing of it, especially for tasks like drying your hands. Switch to eco-friendly options: Look for tissue paper products that are made from recycled materials and are biodegradable. Some brands offer eco-friendly alternatives that are gentler on the environment. Educate others: Encourage your friends, family, and colleagues to be mindful of their tissue paper usage as well. Spread awareness about the environmental impact of excessive paper waste. Compost: If you have access to composting facilities, consider composting used tissue paper to divert it from the landfill and turn it into nutrient-rich soil. Opt for hand dryers: In public restrooms, opt for hand dryers instead of paper towels when possible. Many hand dryers are energy-efficient and can help reduce paper waste. Carry a reusable hand towel: Consider carrying a small reusable hand towel or cloth in your bag for drying your hands instead of using paper towels in public restrooms. By making small changes in your daily habits and encouraging others to do the same, you can help reduce the unnecessary use of tissue paper and minimize paper waste.
