Nicola Cornick, brilliant and joyful historical novelist, meets Gretel at Sutton Courtenay Abbey
Send us Fan MailToday I spent the afternoon at Sutton Courtenay Abbey with the delightful, thoughtful and brilliant author Nicola Cornick. We chatted over pots of tea in the pub, walked around the Abbey together, pondering its past life, and wittered some more on a bench in the old part of the Abbey Gardens. I hope you enjoy getting to know her as I did. A truly wonderful afternoon of a meeting of hearts and minds. 🤓 Support the showGretel le Maître likes to look for the beauty and curiosities in life, one day at a time. Charlotte Brontë’s Villette: Chapter XXXVI ‘The Apple of Discord’
Send us Fan MailGood evening and welcome to today’s second episode, where we continue with Charlotte Brontë’s Villette. A chapter that mulls the differences been Protestant and Roman Catholic faiths. I imagine Charlotte Brontë sometimes closing her eyes and writing straight from heightened or deepened feelings, where the plot is irrelevant: her pen creates a room or space full of contrasting thoughts, emotions, images and even sights and sounds. Plants are watered, canine ears are silky, we smell Catholic incense and hear the noise from a religious procession: all taking place in the mind and intense memories of Lucy Snowe, with some quiet and wholly unpredictable movements in plot and pace. We finish the chapter thinking what? For me, that in hearing from such an intelligent and perceptive, sensitive woman living in a different world and time, we are privileged and - in my case - my heart swells with gladness at that privilege and fervent admiration for her mind. I wish you all a peaceful night and look forward to catching up with upi soon. Monday Literary Feast: Anglo-Saxon Chronicle, Samuel Pepys, William Hunt and Charlotte Brontë
Send us Fan MailGood evening and thank you so much for joining me tonight. I hope you forgive the hesitations and deviations as I enjoy reading you this wonderful feast. What joy that all this marvellous stuff is out there to read - the trick is to try not to fret that life isn’t long enough! How are you this fair Monday evening? What country are you from? Are you content? Would you like me to read you or a loved one a poem? Get in touch and let me know. [email protected] I’m going to read more from the old account of politics in the early years of Queen Victoria’s reign. Also, is it time to go back to the best of all Abbeys: Sherborne? Perhaps we could look in detail at the stunning misericords? Or we might focus on the oldest of the stained glass? Very best wishes and thank you, as always, for your kindness, support and company. We are people trying to walk a gentler and kinder path, ever curious about the worlds and people that came before us, and wanting to look for the beauty in the world, such as in nature and in all ways of the arts. Villette: Charlotte Brontë’s Enchanting Weaving of Words
Send us Fan MailGood evening As I read this chapter this evening in the quietness of my accommodation by the sea, I felt that dark, unvisited corners within my heart were being quietly crept into and opened up a crack. With her words sparingly used, Charlotte Brontë yet manages to prise open these closed, private, tender parts within us, tears surprising us as they prick our blinking eyes. A trick has been played, it feels. As when with just a few notes Mozart can do something that feels very similar. These feelings are such an important part of living a rich life and it’s why I’m convinced that literature, music and all of the arts are so important for an enriched life and a mind satisfied by a vast Naniaesque hinterland. And we have all the books, art and music we could want. Let’s feast on the unlimited banquet of all things bright and beautiful.Thank you for your kindness and support, Love Gretel Support the showGretel le Maître likes to look for the beauty and curiosities in life, one day at a time. John Colet of St Paul’s; Pepys’ love of ‘Discourse’; and Lucy Snowe watches and sees all
Send us Fan MailHello and a very good Tuesday evening. The Abbey bells are ringing as I write and I feel like my mojo has returned: what a strange thing ‘moods’ are. They descend upon us like heavy cloud, hang about as long as they like, and then vanish. People ask, when one mentions feeling down, ‘what are you down about?’. Well, it’s the cloud you see, you want to say; it’s gathered about my head and has put lead in my legs and squeezed all the life out of me.Tonight I feel full of beans 🫘, of purpose and contentment. I’m happy for Son, who is off to see the first day of the cricket tomorrow; for stepson and daughter-in-law whose second child was born with no complications last Sunday; for Daughter, who is spending time with friends who love her; and for Husband who is back from his mammoth trip on Saturday. Are you well? Let me know. Do you want to share your news? Your thoughts? A poem or passage from a book. Get in touch: [email protected] you so much for joining me on my walk through life. One day at a time. May you have a peaceful evening. Love Gretel Support the showGretel le Maître likes to look for the beauty and curiosities in life, one day at a time.
