Villette: Charlotte Brontë’s Enchanting Weaving of Words
Send us Fan MailGood evening As I read this chapter this evening in the quietness of my accommodation by the sea, I felt that dark, unvisited corners within my heart were being quietly crept into and opened up a crack. With her words sparingly used, Charlotte Brontë yet manages to prise open these closed, private, tender parts within us, tears surprising us as they prick our blinking eyes. A trick has been played, it feels. As when with just a few notes Mozart can do something that feels very similar. These feelings are such an important part of living a rich life and it’s why I’m convinced that literature, music and all of the arts are so important for an enriched life and a mind satisfied by a vast Naniaesque hinterland. And we have all the books, art and music we could want. Let’s feast on the unlimited banquet of all things bright and beautiful.Thank you for your kindness and support, Love Gretel Support the showGretel le Maître likes to look for the beauty and curiosities in life, one day at a time. John Colet of St Paul’s; Pepys’ love of ‘Discourse’; and Lucy Snowe watches and sees all
Send us Fan MailHello and a very good Tuesday evening. The Abbey bells are ringing as I write and I feel like my mojo has returned: what a strange thing ‘moods’ are. They descend upon us like heavy cloud, hang about as long as they like, and then vanish. People ask, when one mentions feeling down, ‘what are you down about?’. Well, it’s the cloud you see, you want to say; it’s gathered about my head and has put lead in my legs and squeezed all the life out of me.Tonight I feel full of beans 🫘, of purpose and contentment. I’m happy for Son, who is off to see the first day of the cricket tomorrow; for stepson and daughter-in-law whose second child was born with no complications last Sunday; for Daughter, who is spending time with friends who love her; and for Husband who is back from his mammoth trip on Saturday. Are you well? Let me know. Do you want to share your news? Your thoughts? A poem or passage from a book. Get in touch: [email protected] you so much for joining me on my walk through life. Matrimony in St Genny’s; Difficult Times; A Secret Brook
Send us Fan MailGood evening and welcome to this rather forlorn episode of rather sub-standard audio quality. When I’m a published author living on a castle on a Scottish Island with a troop of staff, I will have a lovely gentleman who will attend to all technical matters. He will wear bottle green knee breeches and the castle will invite schoolchildren to visit to learn about the environment and caring for creatures like hedgehogs 🦔, frogs 🐸, bats 🦇 and birds 🦅. How are you? I’m in Cornwall and plan to publish a literary this evening where I read Barchester Towers and Villette. Are you enjoying them? Are you missing Hardy? Do I need to cover literature from other countries and cultures? Lots of love and THANK YOU ☺️. Apologies for the wind in a couple of sections. An Episode of Two Halves: birds, hedgehogs, puppies and silences; and then exquisite Villette
Send us Fan MailHelloooo, and please I beg of you go straight to 25 minutes if you’re not in the mood for silences, witterings, stuttering, birds, hedgehog rustles and poor (very poor) production quality. But then, oh we get to swim in Charlotte Brontë’s beautiful mind, imagining rooms as though appreciated in a painting by a Dutch master. It’s almost a meditative experience, where items of furniture are lightly and beautifully set out before us and the fall of a curtain is given some sort of sacred importance. This fine, fine chapter, where we are in the mind of a heroine we are growing to care for, settles us deliciously in a soothing home where we feel safe and cared for. Poor Charlotte, writing this with all her sisters and her mother dead, must have surely felt a desire for such soothing and comfort. Not gushing sympathy but gentle, poised comfort of the sort that perhaps - just perhaps - might give her the courage to hold on to her poise. The scene with the beautiful tea items is also very perfect. The Englishness of it and all that implied in the 19th century and still, perhaps, even now. I wish you a peaceful Thursday evening. Thank you so very much for your time and company. I appreciate it hugely! 🌳 Support the showGretel le Maître likes to look for the beauty and curiosities in life, one day at a time. Strictly Books; Villette by Charlotte Brontë 🥀
Send us Fan MailGood evening and thank you so very much for joining me. Without you I really wouldn’t do this, and it’s a blessed existence, living, enfin, as I actually wish to live: rooted in a warm home, but wandering about learning, absorbing and reading. There is no greater pleasure for me than learning things: new nuggets of deliciousness of etymology, of history, of language, art or music. Everything, truly, can be interesting and I finally have the space in my life to wander, like a minstrel of old, from church to church, city to city, meeting lovely and inspiring people, and experiencing new things. All I don’t have is my mother, my sister and brother in my life; all else is well. Key to my happiness, which has bloomed over the course of these past few months, is the warm support many of you have sent my way. I feel snugly settled into a niche of time’s making. The suffering and soreness of grief, bewilderment and loss, to the gentle appreciation of the world about me. The birds, our pets, my family, my garden and this beautiful world, are all about me. Losses are to be borne, for it would be surprising were a woman in her fifties not to have sorrowful cupboards in her life, which contain stark facts that cannot be moulded to my liking. So if you are suffering, or lonely, or bear a cross that weighs miserably upon you, reach out to this podcast, or make contact, if you can possibly bear it, with groups or organisations that care and will respond. The great benefit of modern technology is the ability to connect with other human beings. Let the deriders cast their derision: face to face connections are not always possible, or not always wanted. A very good night from me to you. Love Gretel x🌖 Support the showGretel le Maître likes to look for the beauty and curiosities in life, one day at a time. Gretel Ponders her Past; Pepys is Up Betimes; A Brace of Saints; and Chapter 8 of Villette
Send us Fan MailHullo, hullo, how are you? We are making good progress with Villette. If you haven’t read it before you will find, perhaps, that it creeps up on your soul and tiptoes into your mind: the images in your head of the streets, the Pensionnat, Madame Beck, and Lucy Snowe. Be patient and let the book come to you. One quote from the chapter ‘Villette’ struck a chord with me and I thought I would share it with you here: ‘These feelings, however, were well kept in check by the secret but ceaseless consciousness of anxiety laying in wait on enjoyment, like a tiger crouched in a jungle. The breathing of that beast of prey was in my ear always; his fierce heart panted close to mine; he never stirred in his lair but I felt him: I knew he waited only for sun-down to bound ravenous from his ambush’. Brontë’s beautiful words describing how I feel about evenings, and have felt, all my life. Another quote that puts into beautiful words how I’ve felt about life often is from today’s chapter:‘…but it seemed to me a great thing to be without heavy anxiety, and relieved from intimate trial; the negation of severe suffering was the nearest approach to happiness I expected to know.’Thank you so much for your support. I would be hugely honoured if you would consider supporting in any of the following ways:1. Subscribe2. Leave a review and star rating 3. Download the episodes 5. Forward episodes to people who might like it.All activity like this helps hugely with the chart ratings. I’m entering a podcast competition tomorrow so these ratings will really help my chances.
