In this episode of the Dwell Time Podcast, Lead Engineer, Austin, and Lead Programmer, Jeff, sit down with Rober Soong of MICROMOA LLC, to discuss the original development/invention of the MICROMOA Govnah Gas Block, and the new Griffin Armament Adjustable Gas Block. Griffin's gas block was made possible in part by acquiring two patents from MICROMOA pertaining to the Govnah.  The Griffin Adjustable AR-15 Gas Block provides normal and suppressed operation via rotationally sliding a regulator plate from the Normal position to the Suppressed position. This regulator plate is detented via a 718 inconel spring and ceramic ball bearing ensuring material strength under extreme operating temperatures. There are two 180° opposed sides of the regulator plate, each affording a normal and suppressed setting. One side of the block is identifiable by two grooves cut on the side of the selector cutout. This allows a shooter to find the side of the disk that works best for an application. Once this initial setup has been determined, a one-click operation configures the rifle from normal to suppressed modes of operation. Griffin Currently supports firearms with Pistol to Rifle length gas systems, and compatibility for conventional or low backpressure suppressors.  Special thanks to Robert Soong of MICROMOA for his part in this project, and for coming out to demonstrate the new gas block with us. The Griffin MK2 9mm is a fully ambidextrous 9mm AR-15, and one of the first full-ambi 9mm AR-15s with a forged 7075-T6 receiver set. It is a Colt pattern lower capable of receiving affordable 32 round magazines that have the classic Colt SMG look. It has a 1/4-28 Nylon tipped tension screw equipped lower for a tight fit that can be adjusted to fit end user's preferences. The Griffin Enhanced Gas Pocket BCG is a product that was inspired by a desire to reduce right ear sound signature of the AR-15 platform when used with suppressors. This BCG is designed to improve any suppressed AR-15, with its benefits becoming more pronounced on longer gassed systems. This BCG is constructed of 17-4 stainless steel, a stronger material than the 8620 steel material that most BCGs are made of currently, to increase BCG lifespan. The main design feature is a proprietary gas pocket where gas is vented into on the left side of the receiver. This pocket captures escaping gas increasing dwell time and reducing sound signature at the shooter's right ear, a near-unsolvable problem inherent and well-known to suppressed AR-15 shooters. This gas pocket is capable of reducing sound signature at the shooter's ear by 10.5 dB on 18" barrel rifle gas platforms. Sound reduction is correlated to the length of the gas system, but even on an 11.5" barrel with a carbine-length gas system, users can expect to see a minimum of 3.5 dB sound reduction at the shooter's ear - even when used with "high-flow" printed silencers. Other notable design improvements include a .060" increase in cam pin travel length, which allows the bolt to remain locked for longer, further reducing escaping concussion blast traveling back down the barrel and out the ejection port. This bolt carrier is sold as a bundle with Griffin's M4 CAR +15% buffer spring and shortened buffer which allows increased travel of the BCG in conjunction with a shortened nickel-boron plated proprietary gas key, reducing recoil impulse and improving bolt lock reliability by allowing more time for the bolt catch to actuate. This BCG features a physical stop for the carrier key, protecting carrier key screws from shearing off, as well as a .980" anti-tilt diameter for reducing upper receiver and bolt lug wear introduced by bolt carrier tilt. Carbon scrapers are included for people who like the carbon and debris-removing feature set. In this episode, Evan and Austin discuss the research and implementation of a new sound suppressor testing standard to better enable consumers with dosing data. For previous decades, the standard has been to only show PEAK impulse decibel data. Griffin's new data continues to show peak decibel data, as that is the loudest part of the waveform, but also shows more details that will be of interest to consumers for years to come.
