Is My Child Struggling? Recognizing Depression in Kids and Teens Before It's Too Late
May is Mental Health Awareness Month, and this episode couldn't come at a more meaningful time. In Part Two of this important conversation on suicide prevention, Dr. Sarah is joined by youth mental health experts Sherry Blair, Youth Suicide Prevention Supervisor at Akron Children's Hospital, and Dr. Georgette Constantinou, Pediatric Psychologist, to explore the practical side of keeping kids safe. Together, they walk parents through how to recognize warning signs of depression and emotional distress in children and teens — from changes in sleep, appetite, and hygiene to social withdrawal, declining grades, and concerning social media activity. In this conversation we learn that asking direct questions about a child's mental health is an act of love, and that building a network of trusted adults in a young person's life is one of the most powerful protective tools a family can have.In this episode we cover how to partner effectively with pediatricians, school counselors, and therapists, and why advocating for your child (and yourself) in the treatment process matters. For families in need of immediate support, the guests highlight several key resources: the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline (available 24/7 by call or text), PIRC (Psychiatric Intake Response Center) at Akron Children's Hospital (330-543-7472), Project ChildSafe for free gun cable locks, and local police departments that offer no-cost firearm locking devices. Let’s Talk College Sports: How to Keep Your Teens & Young Athletes Healthy & Safe
In this episode of Growing Up with Dr. Sarah, pediatrician Dr. Sarah Adams chats with her very own son, athletic trainer at Marshall University, Ben Adams. The mother & son duo discuss everything from staying safe when playing high-impact sports and how to best recover after an injury, to avoiding burnout when young athletes are under more pressure than ever before. Dr. Sarah asks when parents should worry about their kids or teens, and when they can take a breather, or a back seat, trusting they’re in good hands with their kid’s athletic trainer. Ben’s advice goes beyond tips and tricks for physical health, equally considering how emotional wellbeing is necessary for your child, teen, or young adult’s happiness and success.Resources:Athletic Training at Marshall University:https://www.marshall.edu/athletic-training/Reduce Youth Concussion Risk:https://news.uoregon.edu/reducing-youth-concussion-riskParental Concern About Concussion:https://www.medstarhealth.org/news-and-publications/news/parents-showing-major-concerns-about-concussions-in-youth-sports-according-to-new-survey#:~:text=More%20than%2090%25%20say%20youth,sports%20without%20written%20medical%20clearance.%22Youth Sports Specialization:https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/6616450/2025/09/11/youth-sports-specialization-parents-young-athletes/. . . . . . . . . . . . . . Foster Care in America: Trauma, Resilience & Why Every Child Deserves Unconditional Love
Rob Scheer grew up in the foster care system and, like so many youth aging out of care, was handed a black trash bag at eighteen to carry everything he owned. That moment became the foundation for a national movement. Rob is the founder of Comfort Cases, a nonprofit dedicated to restoring dignity to children in any phase of foster care.On Growing Up with Dr. Sarah, we often talk about how the environments children grow up in shapes their sense of safety, belonging, and self-worth. Today’s guest embodies that conversation in one of the most powerful ways I’ve ever encountered. Thank you to CNN Hero Rob Scheer for joining us. How to have a Good Divorce: Avoiding the Messy Middle for the Children
In this episode of Growing Up with Dr. Sarah, Dr. Sarah Adams sits down with therapist and divorce coach Karen McNenny to talk about something many families experience but rarely discuss openly: how to have a “good divorce.” Together they explore how parents can move through separation with intention, compassion, and a focus on protecting their children from unnecessary conflict. Karen shares practical insights on shifting the language we use around divorce, avoiding the common trap of putting kids in the middle, and creating thoughtful co-parenting plans that support stability across two homes. Kids Sleeping on the Floor? The Hidden Child Poverty Crisis You’ve Never Heard About
In this episode of Growing Up with Dr. Sarah, pediatrician Dr. Sarah sits down with Luke Mickelson, founder of Sleep in Heavenly Peace, to explore how one small act of service building a bed for a child sleeping on the floor sparked a nationwide movement addressing child bedlessness. Luke shares how something as simple as a bed can transform a child’s sleep, dignity, school performance, and emotional well-being, while Dr. Sarah highlights the science behind why safe, restorative sleep is foundational for healthy development. Together, they discuss the hidden scope of need in communities across the country and how community service not only changes children’s lives but also restores purpose and joy in the adults who step up to help, reminding us that when we meet children’s most basic needs, we strengthen their sense of safety, possibility, and hope. Confused About Childhood Vaccines? Dr. Sarah & Dr. Ravi Break Down the Science Parents Can Trust
In this episode of Growing Up with Dr. Sarah, we’re joined by Dr. Ravi Jhaveri, a leading pediatric infectious disease specialist, to cut through the confusion surrounding childhood vaccines, especially the hepatitis B vaccine given at birth. Together, they explore why the newborn period is such a critical window for prevention, how hepatitis B can quietly cause lifelong infection when exposure happens early, and why universal newborn vaccination has proven far more effective than risk-based approaches. In this episode the pediatricians share decades of public health lessons, explaining how gaps in prenatal care and fragmented health systems make targeted strategies difficult, and how a simple birth-dose vaccine has prevented chronic disease and cancer for millions. The conversation also addresses common parent concerns about vaccine safety, immune system “overload,” and mixed messages from policy changes. This episode offers clear, compassionate explanations about how modern vaccines are more precise than ever, why vaccines are designed to prevent the most severe outcomes (not just infection), and how early immunization protects entire communities. Above all, this episode emphasizes trust: trusting the science, trusting long-term data, and trusting the relationship between parents and their child’s doctor. It’s a hopeful, grounded discussion that empowers families to make informed decisions with confidence.#vaccination #immunization #infectiousdisease #newborns #childhoodvaccinescheduleHave questions about today’s episode, or anything else related to the health and wellness of your family? Keeping Kids Safe from Self-Harm: How Parents Can Ask the Hard Questions and Reduce Risk
Trigger Warning: This episode includes conversation about vulnerable children, self-harm, and suicide ideation. What do you do as a parent who suspects their child may be thinking about self-harm? In this powerful and practical episode of Growing Up with Dr. Sarah, host Dr. Sarah Adams tackles one of the hardest but most life-saving conversations a family can have. This episode focuses on Counseling on Access to Lethal Means (CALM), a free, evidence-based approach that teaches families and professionals how to reduce access to the tools most commonly used in suicide attempts, such as firearms and dangerous medications. Research shows that limiting access to lethal means can literally save lives, while still respecting a child or teen’s rights and autonomy.Dr. Sarah is joined by Sherry Blair, Youth Suicide Prevention Supervisor, and Dr. Georgette Constantinou, Pediatric Psychologist, who lead this crucial work through CALM. Together, they offer clear guidance for parents and caregivers on how to intervene when a child may be at risk, how to collaborate on safe storage, and how to ask the tough questions that many adults fear but that can save a child’s life. This episode equips listeners with practical tools, language, and reassurance. Lethal means counseling matters, and asking directly about suicidal thoughts can be an act of love that keeps a child safe.At its core, this episode reinforces a simple but profound message parents can share with their children: I love you, and your safety is my number one concern.#mentalhealth #suicideprevention #selfharm #firearmsafety Relevant links CALM (Counseling on Access to Lethal Means) https://www.calmamerica.org/American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP) afsp.org/get-help/Society for the Prevention of Teen Suicide (SPTS) sptsusa.orgSuicide Prevention Resource Center: SPRC_Talking_About_LethaL_Means_Resources.pdfAkron Children’s page : Suicide Prevention https://www.akronchildrens.org/pages/Suicide-Prevention.htmlPatient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9) www.apa.org/depression-guideline/patient-health-questionnaire.pdfLeave a voice message: To record and email a voice memo, use your phone's built-in recorder (like Voice Memos on iPhone or a similar app on Android), tap the record button, speak your message (holding the phone like a call), stop recording, then use the “share” icon to select your email app, fill in details, and send the attached audio file. Feeding Kids Made Easier: Expert Nutrition Advice + A New Mealtime & Playtime App
In this episode of Growing Up with Dr. Sarah, Dr. Sarah Adams welcomes registered dietitian and nutrition affairs manager Anna Busenburg for a practical, science-based conversation on nourishing children through every stage of growth. Anna breaks down how everyday food choices can help support immune health during school years when germs are circulating and kids’ nutritional needs are constantly evolving. We learn that healthy eating isn’t about perfection, but about consistency and offering foods in ways children are more likely to enjoy and accept.Anna also explains why nutrition recommendations are never “one and done,” particularly in infancy and toddlerhood when rapid physical and brain development demand increased nutrients like calcium. From fueling growing brains and bones to supporting young athletes, navigating lactose intolerance, and making dairy part of sustainable diets, the episode equips parents with realistic guidance they can use right away. Another Look at Talking Social Media, Gaming & Mental Health with Your Kids with Dr. Molly O’Shae
In this highlight episode of Growing Up with Dr. Sarah, I revisit one of my most meaningful conversations with fellow pediatrician Dr. Molly O’Shae, where we talk candidly about how childhood and parenting has changed in the digital age. As pediatricians, we’ve both witnessed how technology can be an incredible tool while also creating new layers of stress and uncertainty for families. Dr. O’Shea reflects on decades of clinical experience, naming the quiet shift many parents feel: moving from confidence in their children’s resilience to a constant fear of getting it wrong. Together, we explore how screens entered our homes under the promise of learning and connection, and how intentional, parent-involved use of technology can support, rather than replace – play, focus, communication, and emotional growth. We also challenge some of the loudest assumptions parents hear today, especially the idea that screens alone are driving the teen mental health crisis. Dr. O’Shea helps unpack what the research actually shows: technology tends to amplify what kids are already carrying, not create it outright. We talk about the real risks, the real benefits, and how online spaces can foster learning, belonging, and community — particularly for teens who may feel isolated offline. In one of the most moving parts of the episode, Dr. O’Shea shares deeply personal guidance on how families can begin honest, direct conversations when they’re worried about a child’s mental health. My hope is that listeners come away feeling more confident, less afraid, and reminded that the most powerful ingredient in raising emotionally healthy, tech-savvy kids is relationship — staying present, asking good questions, and learning right alongside our children.Have questions about today’s episode, or anything else related to the health and wellness of your family? BMI, Body Image & Raising Healthy Kids: with Pediatric Obesity Specialist Dr. Chris Bolling
n this episode of Growing Up with Dr. Sarah, Dr. Sarah Adams sits down with Dr. Christopher Bolling, a national leader in the prevention and treatment of childhood obesity and a co-author of the American Academy of Pediatrics’ clinical practice guidelines. Together, they unpack one of the most misunderstood topics in pediatrics: childhood obesity. Rather than focusing on numbers or blame, they explore what BMI actually means, why it’s just one vital sign among many, and how to recognize when weight may be affecting a child’s health or happiness. Dr. Bolling explains why weight is so complex, shaped by genetics, development, environment, and behavior, and why compassionate, individualized care matters far more than charts or cutoffs. The conversation also dives into how families and pediatricians can talk about weight with empathy, avoid shame, and support children in building lifelong healthy habits. Dr. Bolling shares practical guidance on motivational interviewing, nurturing positive body image, honoring hunger cues, and building routines around nutrition, movement, and family meals. From reducing pressure at the table to modeling healthy choices ourselves, this episode offers evidence-based, achievable strategies for raising confident, healthy kids, while reminding parents to give themselves grace along the way.Episode Highlights: #motivational interviewing#positive body image#honoring hunger cues#modeling healthy choices Please SUBSCRIBE, LIKE & SHARE if this topic interests you!Have an idea for a show, share your thoughts with us:Have questions about today’s episode, or anything else related to the health and wellness of your family? One recently approved treatment is the use of glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonists –or more commonly known as GLP-1s in adolescents. In this episode we are talking about how they work, who they're for, and just as importantly, what they aren't. The Heart of Summer Sport Safety: Discussing Kid’s Cardiac Health, with Rick Hart
Today's episode is all about youth sports. As the weather gets warmer, organized sports and outdoor activities ramp up. Although there are numerous benefits to youth sports, from physical fitness, to enhanced social skills, and from boosted self-esteem to valuable life lessons, they do come with health risks, not the least of which is SCA or “sudden cardiac arrest.” Recently, laws have gone into effect in states across the country requiring defibrillators and trained individuals to administer them during games and practices. There are many factors that come into play when we think about the health and safety of our children as they're out on the field. On this episode of “Growing Up with Dr. Sarah” I’m joined by Rick Hart. He's a friend and founder and CEO of Jump Start Sports. He's not just building strong athletes.
