Ep 16: Unpacking the effects of Machismo & Marianismo

🎶Imagine if Ninja got a low taper fadeeeeee🎶 Hey everyone! Welcome back to a silly, yet studious episode of the Hand Me Down Podcast. Join Natalia & Alan in recapping another festive weekend, where they unfortunately had a scary run in with the neighborhood Karen. Along with this story, the two talk about homesickness, going to the drive-in movie theater, and…..you guessed it…..the hit song of the week Ninja’s low taper fade, performed by Ericdoa. After all the giggles and soundbites in between, Natalia & Alan jump into the studious conversation surrounding Machismo & Marianismo. First, the two do a quick definition of these terms, then they reflect on how these traditional Latine gender roles have affected their development, as well analyzing the definition of a “manly man” through the presence of the “sassy man apocalypse”. Then the hosts begin to unpack Marianismo and how complicated the traditional purpose of women can be, especially when tied to queerness. All this and more on the Hand Me Down Podcast! EP 15: Does It Hold Up? Rewatching Nacho Libre as Adults

Take it easy!!! Welcome back to another super fun and exciting episode of the podcast. So anyways, let’s get down to the nitty gritty. In this episode, Natalia and Alan share their weekend where they discuss the joy of taking pictures while doing fun activities with their friends. This conversation leads into the comeback of Y2k digital cameras, followed by an honest conversation about Tiktok shop, the credibility of the Bikini Bottom News Fish, and the universal fear of the world ending in 2012. The two also watch America Ferrera’s groundbreaking speech after being awarded the “See Her” Award at the Critic’s choice award, which opens the conversation of how important it is to see representation in Film & TV. And finally, Natalia & Alan *fart* dive into a discussion on if Nacho Libre (2006) still holds up after all this time. Are we blinded by nostalgia? Is it okay for white directors to make a film on a culture that is not their own, even if they do their research? They then discuss the scary incident of the Alaska Airlines flight, followed by a small discussion of North Sea Tik Tok. Finally, the two have a conversation on the importance of seeing Chicana queer representation through the 2012 independent film Mosquita y Mari. They explore topics such as the need for more media depictions of intimacy between LGBTQ+ characters, the importance of having conversations around queerness, first gen and undocumented experiences in low income communities of color, and the realities of the environmental racism of South East LA.
