He argues the amendment would turn Virginia’s competitive 6-5 congressional map into a lopsided 10-1 advantage, disenfranchising over 1.2 million voters through gerrymandering and legislative subversion.A raw take on fair maps, voter apathy in one-party states, and why changing the rules after losing is dangerous, no matter which side does it.Please click on link below to read my early criticisms of Donald Trump (as a candidate and a character.) https://patrickdimarchi.com/2024/11/03/trump-excerpts-from-chasing-the-mic/00:00 Introduction and Context00:47 The Virginia Referendum Explained06:27 Political Landscape and Voter Disenfranchisement11:13 The Consequences of Legislative Subversion17:23 Call to Action and Future Considerations

Ep. 31: Not Political, Just Logical: Virginia Redistricting 2026, Splitting The Shenandoah Valley, No State Income Tax Next?

I'm here to talk with you about the current efforts to redistrict VA and disenfranchise 1.2 million voters. Long story short, Vote No. Here's Why:No Prior Relationship.....Traditionally, Virginia has been known as a historical state, a political state, and an evenly divided state. That last part is currently as risk. Efforts by the current administration have brought about the moment of a state government led vote on whether or not to speed up redistricting in Virginia ahead of the census which usually sparks such actions. These efforts are being pitched solely as an attempt to gain more national power against the Trump administration. What they don't mention is how many people this impacts. The answer, millions. The proposed map would relocate 48% of all Virginia voters. Meaning you will have no prior relationship with your new representative. This goes for many, but in no place more so than the Shenandoah Valley. The proposed map carves the valley (also known as the 6th district) into 5 different districts, 3 of which emcompassing over 100,000 voters a piece from the Northern Virginia/Fairfax regions. This creates such an imbalance as to forever rob citizens of the valley from any say in statewide politics for the next generation. To think you are a valley Democrat and to think you are entirely to benefit from this is to completely underestimate the negative effects of a one-party system. Virginia feels good at the moment because of how fair it is. It's actually favored in the Democrats direction with a 6 to 5 ration in the legislature. The current map brings that new number to a 10-1 ratio. If you live in the 81 corridor this could mean...TOLL ROADS.How else can the Democrats take the house? Novel idea.....PUT FORTH BETTER CANDIDATES.00:00 Introduction00:00 Political Representation and Voting Trends in Virginia01:48 Gerrymandering: A Historical Perspective04:59 The Impact of Redistricting on the Shenandoah Valley07:56 The Consequences of Political Disenfranchisement10:50 Call to Action: Voting No on Redistricting14:06 Conclusion: The Future of Virginia's Political Landscape

Ep. 26: The Cost of Division. Thoughts on Free Speech, Recent News, & Self-Censorship.

In this raw and introspective solo episode, Patrick delivers a passionate monologue addressing the critical issues of free speech, political polarization, and the tragic death of Charlie Kirk. Drawing from his experiences as a political science major and stand-up comedian, Patrick reflects on the importance of open discourse in America, emphasizing the First Amendment as the bedrock of the nation’s identity. He explores Kirk’s role as a provocative yet engaging figure who invited debate, offering a platform for diverse perspectives in a public square. Patrick expresses deep sorrow over Kirk’s death, condemning the act of violence that silenced him and the troubling public celebrations that followed. He argues that ideas, even controversial ones, should be countered with better arguments, not bullets, and laments the loss of opportunity for future discourse that Kirk’s death represents.Patrick also critiques the broader media landscape, specifically addressing figures like Jimmy Kimmel and Stephen Colbert. While he finds humor in Kimmel’s satire, he questions the heavy political lean in late-night comedy, which he believes alienates audiences and fuels division. He firmly opposes calls to cancel these comedians, viewing such actions as un-American and a threat to free expression. Patrick urges a collective lowering of rhetorical temperature, warning against the dangers of inflammatory language that could incite further violence. He reflects on other recent tragedies, including the death of a public official, and criticizes the lack of unifying leadership from figures like Donald Trump, who he believes missed opportunities to bridge divides.Weaving in personal anecdotes, Patrick shares insights from his time as a bartender in Washington, D.C., and his journey as a comedian, highlighting the value of engaging with opposing views. He promotes his book, *Chasing the Mic: A Story of Self-Censorship and American Counterculture in a Time When Nothing Is Funny*, which explores themes of free speech and navigating a polarized world. He encourages listeners to seek out perspectives they disagree with, suggesting that understanding, not silencing, is the path forward. Patrick also touches on his skepticism toward religious doctrines, like those Kirk championed, while defending the universal value of principles like the Golden Rule. This episode is a call to action for compassion, dialogue, and a recommitment to the principles of free speech, urging listeners to reject violence and embrace constructive debate in a fractured society.00:00 Introduction and Technical Setup02:00 Reflections on Charlie Kirk and Free Speech12:10 Debate Culture and the Importance of Discourse23:50 The Consequences of Cancel Culture30:11 Morale and Political Climate in America32:13 The State of National Morale36:04 Faith, Skepticism, and the Ten Commandments39:48 Understanding Different Perspectives on Religion42:14 The Impact of Violence on Society49:50 The Importance of Free Speech56:34 Reflections on Public Figures and Their Impact

Ep. 25: The Best Traveled Man in Vanuatu discusses community development and the Peace Corps. Guests: Willie & Lance Nation

00:00 Introduction and Personal Connections03:18 Community Development in Vanuatu16:19 Climate Change and Its Impact23:29 Successful Community Projects31:11 Balancing Tradition and Modernity37:21 Climate Change Advocacy and Global Responsibility44:02 Unity Among Island Nations52:40 Community Development and Health Initiatives In this engaging episode of *Hard To Sum Up*, host Patrick DiMarchi welcomes Willie and Lance Nation, two individuals with deep ties to the South Pacific island nation of Vanuatu. The episode explores their personal connections to the island, the impactful work of their respective organizations—Learn to Serve and the Small House Toilet Project (SHT Project)—and the unique challenges and cultural strengths of Vanuatu in the face of climate change and natural disasters. The episode kicks off with a lighthearted anecdote about Patrick and Lance's shared history in Washington, DC, including a humorous story about a fake ID that ties into their past. The conversation then shifts to Vanuatu, where Willie, a native of the island of Tana, and Lance, a former Peace Corps volunteer, discuss their collaborative efforts to foster community development. Willie, the founder of Learn to Serve (established in 2017), highlights the organization’s focus on community-driven projects, such as improving access to clean water, reforestation, and socioeconomic development. Lance, who leads the SHT Project, emphasizes their work in building sanitation facilities for schools and clinics, particularly to support maternal healthcare.A significant portion of the discussion centers on Vanuatu’s environmental challenges, including its vulnerability to cyclones, earthquakes, and rising sea levels due to climate change. The guests explain how Vanuatu, part of the Pacific’s “chain of fire” and “belt of cyclone,” faces frequent natural disasters, with some communities losing ancestral lands to sea level rise. Despite these challenges, the resilience and cultural pride of Vanuatu’s people shine through, rooted in principles of respect, love, and unity, which are reflected in both their traditional customs and the Bahá’í faith, introduced to Vanuatu in 1953.Willie shares the success of Learn to Serve’s community savings project, which fosters unity and economic empowerment by creating savings groups that fund local initiatives, such as tree nurseries and agricultural seedlings. The multi-purpose learning center, another key project, serves as both an educational hub and a cyclone evacuation shelter. Lance complements this by detailing the SHT Project’s efforts to revitalize a clinic in Tana, which now supports maternal health and serves hundreds of patients monthly. The episode also touches on global advocacy, with Willie revealing his role in authoring a UN resolution calling for an International Court of Justice advisory opinion on climate change accountability. This resolution highlights the disproportionate impact of climate change on small island nations like Vanuatu, which contribute minimally to global emissions but face severe consequences. The conversation concludes with reflections on the cultural importance of maintaining Vanuatu’s traditional way of life while adapting to modern challenges. Willie and Lance emphasize the power of community-driven development and the importance of global support, expressing gratitude for contributions to their initiatives. They direct listeners to the SHT Project’s website (theshtproject.org) and Learn to Serve’s Facebook page for more information and ways to donate.

Ep. 23: G From Ohio on Modern Dating, Societal Shifts, and Legendary Figures

In this raw and unfiltered conversation, Patrick DiMarchi and Gerrell dive into the complexities of modern dating, societal expectations, and the influence of iconic figures. Gerrell breaks down how dating has evolved from the 1950s to today, highlighting the unrealistic standards some women set—like demanding a luxury car while driving a beat-up Hyundai. They debate the legalization of prostitution, the impact of social media’s instant gratification culture, and the value of trust and partnership in relationships. Reflecting on their time working at TGI Fridays, they contrast genuine connections with superficial pursuits, emphasizing the importance of mutual effort. The discussion takes a turn to cultural icons, from Trump’s political rise and mafia ties to Arnold Schwarzenegger and Ronnie Coleman’s legendary status. Ep. 22: Talking Peace Corps and Public Service with M. Kim

Today I sit down with M. Kim to discuss working in the peace corps, the call to public service, and what’s going on in Vanuatu. Join Patrick DiMarchi as he sits down with Michael Kim, a former Peace Corps volunteer and board member of the Smol Haos Toilet Project (SHTP) in Vanuatu. In this engaging conversation, Michael shares his journey from a Catholic upbringing in Virginia to serving in Togo, West Africa, where he worked on microfinance initiatives empowering women to start businesses with loans as small as $10. He reflects on the challenges of navigating remote communities, cultural traditions, and logistical hurdles, drawing parallels to SHTP’s mission to bring sustainable sanitation to Vanuatu’s villages. Michael discusses how Lance's passion for Vanuatu, sparked by his own Peace Corps service cut short by COVID, drives SHTP’s work to build life-changing toilets that improve health, education, and dignity. From Togo’s markets to Vanuatu’s bush, this episode explores the power of community, the impact of small interventions, and why Michael’s all in for SHTP’s future. I've not taken the time to do an introductory episode yet, but this podcast will be either reading you the things I write, talking about the things I am curious about, interviewing the people I find interesting, or introducing you to what I am currently learning. This episode in particular is all about my initial deep dive into the world of A.I. and how I went from knowing nothing about this field to being hired in around 6 months. Hope you find this useful. Please share it with anyone who you think might as well. If you enjoy this episode please press the follow button and share this with anyone you think might be interested. If you know anyone interesting who you think we should interview, send me some info in the comments. And remember to visit...www.patrickdimarchi.com
