There's a grand stone building in Fergus, Ontario, that has stood for nearly 150 years. It was built as a poorhouse in 1877 — a place for the destitute, the sick, the aged, and the forgotten. But according to staff who work there today, some of those who lived and died within its walls may never have truly left. In the late 1800's, the community of Commanda sprang up as a way station along the Old Nipissing Road, one of the last routes built to entice immigrants to Ontario's near north. In 1885 by James and Elizabeth Arthurs, built a store strategically located on the Rosseau-Nipissing Road. During the boom years of settlement in the Southern Canadian Shield, the Commanda General Store served as an important supply centre for the pioneer lumbermen and farmers of the region . Since then it changed hands many times but through it all there have been claims that there are a few ghosts lingering on the premises. Among them is James Arthurs. Nestled along the Rideau Canal between the Chateau Laurier and Parliament Hill is another haunted hotbed, the Bytown Museum. First constructed in 1827, the building that houses the museum is the oldest remaining stone building in Ottawa. One of the more prominent reported ghosts in the building is former supply manager Duncan McNab, who worked during the construction of the canal. Staff and visitors have reported doors shaking almost off their hinges, porcelain dolls that cry and footsteps up and down the stairs from the first floor to the second. He is just one of many who continue to reside in the museum. Strathcona County Museum and Archives is located in the first fire hall of the County, erected in 1959. The RCMP moved in eight years later and shared the building until 1975 . The museum and exhibits opened in 1997, and by 2001 there were reported sightings of a 'friendly', but prankster ghost. This working village in the north end of Toronto is typical of those established in south central Ontario between the 1790s and the 1860s. On Wednesday, August 1, 1906 George Stanley was hanged. He was the last man executed at the Windsor County Jail. From that day on…. the town was never the same because while justice may have d been served many believe that Freeman Harvey, the man George Stanley so callously killed is not at rest. Judge Charles Edgar DeWolf, who lived in the area, reported seeing the apparition of a headless man in his basement window. He knew that parts of Harvey’s corpse had been found hidden under a pile of potatoes, and the judge was sure that he had seen Harvey’s ghost. Then, other strange things began to happen. Just over 30 mins away from Canada’s capital city is a suburb located on the Rideau River that feels like a country getaway within Ottawa. It is a heritage village rooted in history with a perfect small-town charm. Named after the Ojibway word for “island in the river” by its founder, Moss Kent Dickinson, Manotick's has a very recognizable landmark. It is the only working museum in the Ottawa area and one of very few operating industrial grist mills in North America. About 25 mins from Victoria, British Columbia is where you'll find Hatley Castle. In 1906, B.C.'s Lieutenant Governor, James Dunsmuir, purchased the property. He and his wife Laura commissioned the renowned Canadian architect Samuel Maclure to build a 40-room mansion in the Tudor revival style that was popular in the Edwardian period. James was often criticized as a public official, and the mansion became his escape when he retired. James and his wife Laura had 12 children. Their youngest son, Jim, was of fighting age when WWI broke out and lost his life on the RMS Lusitania when a German U-boat torpedoed the ship, and Jim’s body was never discovered. The couple was heartbroken by the death of their son and spent the majority of their days mourning him. James died shortly after Jim and ever since then, there have been claims of strange things happening in the mansion.
