Port Recap Pod
Darren Levin and Nat Martin caught up pre-game at Marvel Stadium to discuss their thoughts, concerns and tips for the clash against Port, in which the Hawks were clear favourites. Confidence was high — a big brown and gold crowd, a favourable matchup, and predictions of a comfortable win. But it didn't really pan out that way. Hosted on Acast. This isn’t about promise anymore. It’s about expectation.🎧 Listen as we discuss…* The Dogs win: Why this one was all about composure, maturity and finishing the job when it mattered.* Backing it up: Two wins in five days and what that says about this group’s mindset.* The youth surge: Why our 23-and-under core is driving wins now — and still being underrated externally.* The one we can’t lose: Who is the most irreplaceable player in the side right now?* Selection squeeze: How do you plug a Mabior-sized forward line hole?* Will Day watch: How he returns, why there’s no rush, what it means for the midfield mix, and his ummmm … vinyl collection?* Port Adelaide preview: How we take control at Marvel, the Butters matchup, and why this is a game we should win.* Fan energy: The new wave of Hawks supporters, the noise, and why the vibe shift is real (and probably driven by TikTok).* Hall of Fame: Celebrating Roughie, Moncrieff, Schwab and Haby, and what they represent for the club. Thanks as always to our HI members for all your support. But as much as we’d love to live in that moment forever, there’s a crucial Gather Round clash against the Dogs just around the corner.🎧 Listen as we discuss…* The Easter Monday classic: what it actually means now the dust has settled;* How the Hawks won it: late-game composure, centre bounce execution and a group that’s grown up.* The rise of the next core: Ward, Watson and McDonald standing up on the biggest stage;* The forward line dynamic: Gunston as the focal point and Lewis’ selfless role.* The Chol-acoster: Is the scrutiny fair after some poor goal kicking in the last quarter? Can we really trust him in a final?* Nick Watson’s influence: Why 13 touches felt like 30? And why he might already be our most damaging player);* Debut watch: Flynn Perez’s aggression and Jack Dalton’s composure in a finals-like atmosphere;* Box Hill wrap: Schubert’s five, Nairn’s growth, and the selection squeeze that’s coming; * The Bulldogs preview: How we beat them, who goes to Dale and Darcy, and whether our ruck dominance can help us prevail; plus* Your questions answered: From Amon’s return to Scrimma’s form. "Don’t put a ceiling on what this group can do"
Subscribe to Hawks Insiders for the most in-depth and wide ranging Hawthorn coverage available. Exclusive interviews to analysis, match recaps to podcasts, the Insiders have you covered.“If we get the development right, we should be even better in ’27, ’28 and ’29.”- Rob McCartney Our first ever live panel show at the Kennedy Community Centre was one of those nights that reminded us how special the Hawks Insiders community is. From guided tours of the facilities to special guests (including some unexpected ones in the crowd!), the Hawks really rolled out the brown and gold carpet for us.For those who couldn’t make it along — or if you just want to relive the night — we’re publishing the full panel interview with Hawthorn Executive General Manager of Football Rob McCartney and Box Hill head coach (and Hawthorn development coach) Dave Mirra as a pod.Rob gave a few clues about the next wave of players pushing for their Hawthorn debut and the famous Rule 529; while Miz offered a fascinating insight into how the Box Hill–Hawthorn pipeline actually works behind the scenes.🗣️ Key talking points:* What the club really took away from the Bulldogs practice match;* Why Hawthorn still sees itself in a development phase, despite last year’s prelim;* The young Hawks pushing for debut opportunities in 2026 — including Will McCabe, Aidan Schubert and Cam Nairn;* How players like Josh Weddle are being developed to become genuine “fix-it” weapons across multiple positions;* The continued growth of the Hawks’ young core including Josh Ward, Cam Mackenzie and Nick Watson;* The role Box Hill plays in fast-tracking players for AFL football; and* How the new Kennedy Community Centre is already changing the way players prepare and recover. It’s a wide-ranging conversation that gives a real sense of where the Hawks are heading — and why there’s so much excitement building around this group, not just for 2026 but beyond.Follow us on social media through the links below:Twitter | Facebook | Instagram This is a public episode. Worrying signs out of Whitten Oval
Subscribe to Hawks Insiders for the most in-depth and wide ranging Hawthorn cover there is. From exclusive interviews to analysis, match recaps to podcasts, the Insiders have you covered. In our first — and only — AMMI Community Series match of 2026, the Hawks went down to the Dogs in disappointing fashion 18.9 (117) to 11.7 (73).Nat Martin and Angry Brad unpacked the loss — and while it’s not “season over” just yet, there were a few worrying signs ahead of our Round Zero clash against the Giants.🗣️ Talking Points* Won the clearances. Lost the game: Territory wasn’t the issue — efficiency and execution were.* Transition defence exposed: The Dogs cut us up through the corridor far too easily.* Inside 50 connection still a work in progress: Entries didn’t match the structure.* Mitch Lewis under the microscope: This isn’t “just pre-season” for him.* Barrass is irreplaceable: Our key defensive depth looks thin if he goes down.* Newcombe tribunal watch: One week changes the entire Round 1 midfield mix.* Reeves or Meek? Do we need tap dominance or mobility?* Gunston still class: Experience and composure holding the forward line together.* The Wizard is coming: Nick Watson looks ready to explode in 2026.If you haven’t already, make sure to subscribe to Hawks Insiders for bi-weekly podcasts, analysis and more. Pre-Season Recap Pod: Hawks vs Cats
Subscribe to Hawks Insiders for the most in-depth and wide ranging Hawthorn coverage available. Exclusive interviews to analysis, match recaps to podcasts, the Insiders have you covered.Season 2026 is upon us and the Hawks fired up in sweltering conditions in their first pre-season hitout at the KCC.The Hawks prevailed by 17 points over the Cats — 16.15 (111) to 14.10 (94) — in front of a healthy brown and gold turnout at our new home. There was plenty to like, and plenty to refine. But for a first official outing at KCC, 16 goals and a 17-point win over the Cats is a pretty nice way to christen the place.Listen as Ash, Mick and Brad discussed: * The midfield mix and why Ward is trending towards the clear No.2 behind Jai;* What we need from our centre bounce rotations in 2026.* Reeves and Meek: how the ruck balance looked and why synergy matters more than raw hitout numbers this time of year;* Sam Butler’s statement game — forward pressure, elite tackling and whether he’s now locked into our best 23;* Mitch Lewis’ presence up forward and how the mix of Lewis, Dear, Chol and (eventually) Gunston shapes the structure;* The kids watch — Noah Mraz competing hard and Aiden Schubert showing promise;* Why Flynn Perez is pressing hard for that SSP spot;* The upcoming Round One matchup against a GWS side dealing with significant injuries;* First impressions of the Kennedy Community Centre — strong crowd, great energy… and yes, the melted bitumen in the car park;* And much much more. Inside Hawthorn's new $113m home
Subscribe to Hawks Insiders for the most in-depth and wide ranging Hawthorn cover there is. From exclusive interviews to analysis, match recaps to podcasts, the Insiders have you covered. What a difference a year makes. When the Hawks Insiders team last visited the Kennedy Community Centre in November 2024, there wasn’t a single blade of grass on the AFLW and Community Oval. This time around — when Ash, Danny and Daz were given a grand tour by lifelong Hawks nuffies, CEO Ash Klein and COO Jacob Attwood — we couldn’t quite believe our eyes. The grass was down. The ovals were defined. The buildings were a hive of activity. Players were training the house down, staff were embedded, and the Kennedy Community Centre had gone from a major construction project (and HI regular Paddy Malone’s dream) to a fully functioning football home.🎧 You can hear our full recap in the podcast above. From scale to substanceLast year, it was impossible not to be overwhelmed by the sheer ambition of the site. Two full-sized ovals sitting side by side on a vast parcel of land, with room to grow. A facility that felt big, bold and future-facing, but still very much mid-build.This visit was different. The scale is still jaw-dropping, but now it’s the detail that hits you. You don’t need to imagine how the place will work anymore. You can see it IRL.Players move seamlessly from track to gym to recovery. Coaches huddle in meeting rooms purpose-built for collaboration. Staff are already talking about routines, habits and standards being set simply by walking through the door each morning. This feels less like a training ground for players only, and more like an elite workplace for the club holistically, designed to make everyone better at what they do.Two ovals, two very different advantagesThe contrast between visits is perhaps clearest when you step onto the AFLW and Community Oval.In 2024, it was still dirt and timelines. In 2025, it’s a surface that looks (and feels) ready. The ground is a genuine AFL-sized venue, with dimensions that immediately change how Hawthorn’s AFLW side can play. Anyone who has watched games at Frankston will understand the significance of that. More width. More space. More opportunity to run, spread and use the weapons this list actually has.Standing well inside the boundary, we were told: this is where the Frankston boundary line would have been. That alone tells you how transformative this move could be for AFLW matchday football when the games start being played here.Add in the pavilion, the coach’s box (which may or may not be larger than some inner-city apartments), and the planned viewing mound on the wing, and it’s easy to imagine Dingley quickly becoming a genuine community football destination.Indoors, uninterruptedIf there’s one space that consistently drew wide eyes and quiet disbelief, it was the indoor training facility.Fully enclosed. Turf strong enough for boots. Long enough that none of us (at our stage of life, anyway) could kick from one end to the other. The most striking detail? The centre square is built to exact AFL dimensions, allowing proper centre bounce and ruck work even when the weather turns. And as was pointed out to us, someone has already managed to kick a football onto the roof, which probably tells you everything you need to know about how freely this space is being used.Recovery, routine, and players choosing to be thereAnother major shift from last year: the facility is already becoming a place players want to spend time. The recovery zone — hot, cold and magnesium pools, sauna, lap pool — is in constant use. We were told players are coming in on days off, after hours, and treating the place as a second home rather than an obligation. That matters. When players choose to be at the club, standards rise naturally. As Conor Nash told us briefly after training, the sense is that the group is already preparing better simply because everything they need is under one roof.Honouring the past, without being stuck in itThere’s been some discussion among fans about the museum space, particularly compared to the more traditional setup at Waverley. What stood out on this visit wasn’t size, but intent.Rather than walls of static memorabilia, the Kennedy Community Centre leans into interactivity and experience. Pull-out drawers of historic jumpers. Digital timelines. A row of landline phones where you can hear the voice of legendary coaches and players and even cop a spray from the KCC’s namesake. And then, tucked behind a door, a space designed to feel like you’re back in the rooms at Glenferrie Oval. Complete with the smell of liniment in the air.A genuine destination clubFacilities don’t win premierships. But in such a tight competition they do make a difference. As we discussed on the pod, this is one of the few remaining areas in modern footy that sits outside the soft cap, and Hawthorn has clearly gone all-in.Debt-free. Land owned outright. Space to develop future stages including community sport, medical facilities and hospitality. This is about long-term stability and growth as much as football performance. And from a recruitment point of view? It’s hard to imagine a stronger opening pitch to a draftee walking through these doors for the first time. Imagine being Cameron Nairn or Ollie Greeves or Jack Dalton and having this be your first experience of a professional footy club. Talk about setting a high bar.See you at the KCC?Our pre-season live event is one of the highlights of the Hawks Insiders calendar. Last year even Sam and Lyndall Mitchell made a cameo. But in 2026, we’re taking things up a notch. Thanks to the incredible support of our friends at the Hawthorn Football Club, we can finally confirm what we’ve been holding close to our chests for the past few weeks:The Hawks Insiders 2026 Season Launch will be held at the Kennedy Community Centre, in the rooms above the AFLW Pavilion, on Wednesday, March 4.It’s the ultimate two-for-one deal.
