Welcome to another episode of Helping The Brave podcast! In this episode, we are privileged to have the brave and inspirational Larry Freeland as our guest. Larry has a rich background that was heavily influenced by growing up on Air Force bases, particularly Strategic Air Command (SAC) bases. His father, a full colonel specializing in meteorology and Russian history, had interactions with General Lemay, the top figure in SAC. Larry's own military experience comes from serving in Vietnam as a Chinook helicopter pilot with the 101st Airborne. He participated in a challenging operation supporting South Vietnamese troops along Route Nine. However, the operation was cut short due to intense battles with the North Vietnamese Army. Larry witnessed the bravery and sacrifice of his fellow soldiers and has dedicated his writing to honor their legacy. One of Larry's notable works is the book series called "The Air Warrior," which follows three generations of men in an American family who serve in different wars. In the first two books, he explores the aftermath of World War I and the experiences of his protagonist, SIM McCormick, as a pilot in World War II and the Korean War. Larry is currently working on the third book, which will delve into the lives of Sam's three sons. We also discuss the historical context of World War I, specifically the hardships faced by soldiers in the trenches, the long-term health effects they endured, and the social challenges they encountered during the Great Depression. Larry sheds light on the Bonus Army march on Washington and the involvement of World War I veterans in unionization efforts. In addition to his books, Larry wrote a screenplay called "The Flying Pachyderms" and turned it into a successful book titled "Chariots in the Sky." This led to a contract for a trilogy called "The Legacy of Honor." The first book, "The Patriarch," has been well-received, and the second book is set to be released soon, generating positive reviews from Kirkus. Ed Parcaut and Amy Tiemeyer are the hosts of the podcast Helping the Brave. They are interviewing an army veteran named Arreal Riggs, who served for 9 years and worked in various roles such as human resources, logistics, and intelligence. He joined the army due to the influence of his uncle, a Vietnam vet. Arreal found the podcast through a military community on Instagram and reached out to the hosts. He was stationed at various locations including Fort Bragg, Wright Patterson, Ohio, and South Korea. Amy asks him about his transition from the military and his thoughts on the classes and resources provided to him. He mentions that he had to learn everything on his own as he transitioned from South Korea. In addition to his time in the military, Arreal is also involved in a non-profit organization called Heroic Hearts Project which helps veterans through psychedelic retreats. The organization was founded 5 years ago and the retreats cost approximately $4,000 per veteran, which includes the cost of the retreat, flight, and coaching prior to the retreat. The organization has a long waiting list and they are currently trying to raise money to sponsor more veterans. The website for the organization is shown and can be found at heroicheartsproject.org. Helping The Brave - Shellie Willis
After retirement from the U.S. Army and 25 years of service starting over seemed daunting and extremely stressful for Shellie WIllis. Everyone doesn’t land their “dream career” or start their business or even decide to continue their education immediately. Over the last 6 and half years of working in workforce development with a focus on veteran’s initiatives, she found most really don’t have a clue without being given a strong sense of direction and purpose as to what that next move should be. Willis also discovered that service women didn’t realize they were a highly underrepresented demographic within a demographic. She wanted to create a movement and community that will continue to educate and empower our service women TO and THROUGH transition for however long it takes by building a community of connectors ranging from life coaching, lifestyle, branding, health and wellness, financial readiness and more. Service women need to be reminded they are WOMEN and they are AMAZING long after their military service they can DEFINE themselves and be EMPOWERED to SHIFT into their next phase in LIFE!
