Helvete - Radio Metal

This week's show celebrates the 42nd anniversary of an album that forever shaped the careers and influences of countless bands: the self-titled debut album by the Swedish band Bathory. As always, we break it down track by track and uncover fascinating details about what happened back then.

In this week's episode, we listen to the entirety of Under a Pale Grey Sky, a live album by Sepultura, recorded on December 16, 1996, at the Brixton Academy in London, during the Roots tour. This wonderful live recording also holds enormous historical value: it was Max Cavalera's last concert with Sepultura. After leaving the stage following this extraordinary performance, a heated argument ensued between them, which led to Max leaving the band a few months later. Interestingly, although the show was recorded in 1996, as we mentioned, it wasn't released until 2002, six years later. Roadrunner Records released it as a double album, with a runtime of almost two hours, reflecting the brutal form the band from Belo Horizonte was in, at a time when they had already signed a contract for subsequent albums with the German company SPV GmbH, without their consent.

Larga vida a Injector!. This week we called Cartagena, Spain, and chatted with Mafy, bassist of the brutal thrash metal band Injector. We talked at length about his life in music, his influences, and, of course, his wonderful band. It was a very pleasant and fun conversation because with such good people, everything is so easy. Long live Injector!

Thinking about it these days, I remembered the youth of those of us who were Metallica maniacs, back when the Americans, during their glorious years of those first wonderful albums, for some unknown reason, didn't release a live album. Those of us who were loyal fans were out hunting for so-called bootlegs, that is, unofficial Metallica live recordings, often with pretty bad sound quality, but they made us happy nonetheless. It was like...how many Metallica bootlegs do you have, bro? And well, today I bring you a really great live recording, which is of course not a bootleg, and which captures the magic and power that Ulrich and company had on stage back in 1988 and 1989. Specifically, we're talking about a show performed during the Damaged Justice tour at the Shoreline Amphitheater in Mountain View, California, on September 15, 1989. So, I hope you enjoy it, and that for those of you who are getting on in years, it brings back memories of those days spent searching for unofficial live recordings of one of the most important bands in the history of metal.

On July 25th, the voice of our beloved Sick of It All, one of the great bands of New York hardcore and a living legend of the genre, left us far too soon at the age of 59. In 2017, after a 17-year hiatus, Los Sapos reunited for a concert at the former Torrero prison in Zaragoza. This prison bore witness to the penitentiary history of the 20th century in the Aragonese capital, playing a key role in the life of the neighborhood. It was the scene of Francoist repression in the city during the Civil War and the subsequent postwar period, and was ultimately used against the conscientious objection movement in Spain. There, and for this reason, two members of Los Sapos, Guillermo and Fer, were imprisoned. Once the prison closed, on May 23, 2017, the band from Zaragoza performed this magnificent concert, which will go down in the annals of libertarian history.

At the same time, they offered us a spectacular unplugged performance with several songs, which became part of the history of that humble radio station, sadly now defunct.
