Hindsight Movie Reviews

A movie review podcast by Rashanii, Brandon, and Jeff, where we take movies that were favorites of ours from the '80s, '90s, and beyond and rewatch them again now to see if they still hold up. Most do not.

    Any Given Sunday

This movie was much longer than I remembered, and most of that was stupid cutscenes and edits of old white people playing football. Paid In Full

When the person the movie is about is mad at the script, you are either doing something right or something wrong. As it would turn out, this movie was 50% truth, but only the person who was still alive to tell the story knows how much of that 50% was actually true. Cam'ron stood tall as Rico. Galaxy Quest

Take a movie that is so beloved by the people that it was satirizing that it ranks in the top ten of THEIR greatest movies. That's Galaxy Quest. It is a perfect complement to Star Trek, and every aspect of it sings a love song to the movies that bore it. This movie is golden. 30. 231

    The Six Triple Eight

There was an amazing, powerful story to be told in this movie about the first battalion of Black women in the Army. Major Charity Adams was the first Black woman to become an officer in the Women's Corps. The Herculean task that they had to undertake. The way that they delivered the mail that no one else could. The uplifting, motivating stories are everywhere. Unfortunately, Tyler Perry directed this movie. So that means he created a dark-skinned black woman to be the black villain. That means he spent little time discussing Major Adams' rise to Major. He spent little time talking about the battalion as a whole. But he did make sure to spend half of the movie talking about a magical white man who was the impetus for the lead character to do EVERY SINGLE THING she did in her life after he died. This movie could have been so much more, and Stephanie from Mocha Minutes and Derik discuss it. Enjoy. House Party

Ahoy, Motherfuckers! They shouldn't have done that toilet like that. Who in the hell shits at a party anyway? Also, Derik ruined this movie for himself by seeing it through the eyes of an actual adult, so he was useless for this entire episode. Everyone in this movie was at least 25 when they starred in it, other than the members of Full Force, who were all at LEAST 49 in the face. Oh, and Play is an awful person, and Derik tries to mention how colorism shaped this entire film. Brandon and Scar weren't having it. Enjoy. 32. 229

    The Prestige

Ahoy, Motherfuckers! This movie is a bonafide classic. It is literally astonishing that it doesn't get more love. The casting is perfect, the acting is perfect, the storyline is perfect, and the prestige is perfect. Brandon has watched this movie a million times and still finds new stuff each time he watches it. Derik has watched it twice.   He missed A LOT. Enjoy. 33. 228

    Roll Bounce

Ahoy, Motherfuckers! By rights, I should hate everything about this movie. Meagan Good is in it. BOW-WOW is in it. Nick Cannon is in it for six minutes and gets star credits on the front of the box, a travesty that was last seen when the late Coolio was put on the cover of Phat Beach and was literally only in the movie for as long as a person with no lungs can hold their breath.  The acting is awful. The jokes are awful. It's a movie about skating, but no one can skate. The older I get, the more I empathize with the father in the movie, which is bad when you realize this is a teen coming-of-age movie. They have 25-year-olds playing 15-year-olds. It is the Cuba Gooding Jr. effect in reverse. They literally never show the faces of the characters when they are doing complex skating moves. They are either recording from the waist down, or the waist up. The primary music for the movie came out a year after the movie was supposed to be set. The villain is laughable, and so is his crew. And yet... I love this movie. It is a certified hood classic. Enjoy.  Leave an email at [email protected] Twitter:  @ThatCoolBlkNerd, @HindsightRevues, @Rashanii Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/HindsightMovieReviews Become a Patron at http://www.Patreon.com/singlesimulcast Donate to the show at http://www.buymeacoffee.com/sscast

  34. 227

    Back to the Future 3

Ahoy Motherfuckers! They had issues with coping with the incest storyline in the first movie, but in the third movie, they make no comment at all about the fact that George McFly's great-great-grandmother looks just like Lorraine Baines. Also, Marty should know what a Tannen looks like at this juncture, and Doc only cares about the future being changed when he isn't the one changing it.  With all of that said, this was a wonderful way to cap off the trilogy. It is a Western that truly gets better with age. Enjoy. Back to the Future 2

Ahoy Motherfuckers! There wasn't supposed to be a sequel to Back to the Future, and when the sequel was made, it wasn't supposed to be set in the future. It also wasn't supposed to do anything more than to set up the third movie in the trilogy, which was already made when the sequel came out. The movie is beloved, not because of the storyline, per se but because of the scientific advancements that the storyline provided to future time-traveling movies. The rules that they created in Hill Valley still resound loudly 33 years later. We are joined by Cee Brandon and we discuss just how important this movie truly is. Enjoy.  Leave an email at [email protected] Twitter: @BTouch, @ThatCoolBlkNerd, @HindsightRevues, @Rashanii Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/HindsightMovieReviews, https://www.facebook.com/groups/ssnpodgroup/ Become a Patron at http://www.Patreon.com/singlesimulcast Donate to the show at http://www.buymeacoffee.com/sscast

  36. 225

    Back to the Future

Ahoy Motherfuckers! Disney turned this movie down because it had elements of incest in it. Other studios turned it down because it didn't have the raunchy nature of Porky's or Revenge of the Nerds. Their loss. Brandon and Derik were joined by Cee Brandon of the Say Something Nice podcast, and we reflected on one of the greatest movies of modern history and the paradoxes within it. Enjoy.  Leave an email at [email protected] Twitter: @BTouch, @ThatCoolBlkNerd, @HindsightRevues, @Rashanii Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/HindsightMovieReviews, https://www.facebook.com/groups/ssnpodgroup/ Become a Patron at http://www.Patreon.com/singlesimulcast Donate to the show at http://www.buymeacoffee.com/sscast

  37. 224

    Dick Tracy

Ahoy, Motherfuckers! You take Batman '89's music, add the campiness of Adam West's Batman from the '60s and give Al Pacino absolute autonomy to do what he wishes. You also have awesome casting, excellent make-up, grand set designs, and amazing costuming, and you have Dick Tracy.  Really, all you need is Al Pacino. He took this role and poured cocaine on it.   Leave an email at [email protected] Twitter: @HeyDeeDeeSweets, @ThatCoolBlkNerd, @HindsightRevues, @Rashanii Websites: http://www.singlesimulcast.com Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/HindsightMovieReviews Become a Patron at http://www.Patreon.com/singlesimulcast Donate to the show at http://www.buymeacoffee.com/sscast

  38. 223

    Spaceballs

Ahoy, Motherfuckers! You take John Candy and put him into any movie, and you already have comedic gold. But when you mix him with Rick Moranis in possibly his greatest role and add Mel Brooks' writing genius, you have a comedic classic. Brandon chose Spaceballs for the movie of the week, and we had a wonderful time reminiscing about the movie that was so great that George Lucas allowed the Millenium Falcon to be in it. Enjoy.  Leave an email at [email protected] Twitter: @ThatCoolBlkNerd, @HindsightRevues, @Rashanii Websites: http://www.singlesimulcast.com Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/HindsightMovieReviews Become a Patron at http://www.Patreon.com/singlesimulcast Donate to the show at http://www.buymeacoffee.com/sscast

  39. 222

    Rocky III

Ahoy, Motherfuckers!  Clubber Lang is NOT the villain of Rocky III. Even if I wasn't a black man who thinks the world of him, I would still contend that he isn't the villain. The villain of this movie is clearly Paulie, who happens to be a racist AND a hater, which is just such a poor combination. It isn't Clubber's fault that Mickey KNEW that Clubber would whoop Rocky's ass, so he kept ducking him, and it isn't his fault that he finally had to pull up at the museum to show and prove, either. It isn't like he killed Mickey, either. He just happened to die while Clubber was killing Rocky. That's a coincidence. I love this movie. I love that man. And I really dig Sylvester Stallone for writing such banging ass lines.  Leave an email at [email protected] Twitter: @ThatCoolBlkNerd, @HindsightRevues, @JeffVsTheWorld, @Rashanii Websites: http://www.singlesimulcast.com Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/HindsightMovieReviews Become a Patron at http://www.Patreon.com/singlesimulcast Donate to the show at http://www.buymeacoffee.com/sscast

  41. 220

    Coffy

Ahoy, Motherfuckers! Wooden acting, horrible Jamaican accents, awful effects, soul-withering soundtrack lyrics, and head-scratching motives could not dampen the absolute star power of Pam Grier in this Blaxploitation classic. Brandon loves this movie so much that he named his dog after it, but Derik had never seen it before, and Jeff will never miss out on an opportunity to get some great jokes in. This is the very fabric of a great bad movie. Enjoy. 42. 219

    Meteor Man

Ahoy, Motherfuckers! This movie had such a dynamic cast and literally did nothing with the vast majority of them. It had the first black superhero in modern history and literally failed to explain him. It had an interesting storyline and made it laughable by the casting of the villain. Movies like these are the reason Hindsight exists. I'm Gonna Git You Sucka!

Ahoy, Motherfuckers!  This movie is iconic. Endlessly quotable and hilarious, this is one of two perfect send-ups of the blaxploitation era of movies. This is Keenan Ivory Wayans at his finest. 44. 217

    Hollywood Shuffle

Ahoy, Motherfuckers! This movie revolutionized black comedies and, in my opinion, assisted in opening up more opportunities for black actors and actresses outside of the scope that they had been locked into. This was a labor of love created by Robert Townsend. He literally paid for this out of his own pocket, as well as writing this with Keenan Ivory Wayans, and spent seventeen days over two years putting this together, and it is a biting satire that still evokes laughter 34 years later. Enjoy. 45. 216

    A Low Down Dirty Shame

Ahoy, Motherfuckers! It is a low-down dirty shame how piss poor the acting was by the leading man in this film. The jokes fall flat more often than not, the metaphors are mind-numbingly stupid,  and the motives behind the actions are lacking. Roc and Jada Pinkett tried, but they can't save a movie this bad on their own. Join us as we discuss it from pillar to post, and smoke it like a motherfucking pack of Kools.  Leave an email at [email protected] Twitter: @ThatCoolBlkNerd, @HindsightRevues, @Rashanii Websites: http://www.singlesimulcast.com Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/HindsightMovieReviews Become a Patron at http://www.Patreon.com/singlesimulcast Donate to the show at http://www.buymeacoffee.com/sscast

    The Matrix

Ahoy, Motherfuckers! We were joined by Matt St. Jack from Anime Talk to discuss The Matrix. This movie is a bonafide classic. It changed so many different genres and viewpoints. It was a cinematic triumph. It was fun and exciting, and there was nothing quite like it. To be honest, there still isn't. But the allegories to a God Complex or Jesus are rich throughout, and Morpheus did push up rather hard on Neo, which is also the One. I didn't even notice that until today. Enjoy.  Leave an email at [email protected] Twitter: @ThatCoolBlkNerd, @HindsightRevues, @AnimeTalk12 @Rashanii Websites: http://www.singlesimulcast.com Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/HindsightMovieReviews Become a Patron at http://www.Patreon.com/singlesimulcast Donate to the show at http://www.buymeacoffee.com/sscast

  47. 214

    Ghostbusters: Afterlife

Ahoy, motherfuckers! Take the first Ghostbusters, cut out the villain and paste her in a movie with kids in it. Then age the stars of the first movie by 37 years, and put them into needless roles in the movie with the kids in it. THEN stir. Oh. And make Winston a magical negro for all of his troubles in the previous movies. Brandon and I discuss Ghostbusters: Afterlife. 48. 213

    Ghostbusters (2016)

Ahoy, Motherfuckers! This movie was an absolute joy that fixed every single issue that the previous films had. The women were actually given roles, the black character was an equal member of the Ghostbusters, and the city actually believed and respected their work. So it isn't any surprise to me that the movie tanked because menbabies were mad that this was an all-woman cast with a black woman in a leading role.  If any Ghostbusters movie deserved a sequel, this was it. Ghostbusters 2

Ahoy, Motherfuckers! I yearn to love this movie so much more. I love the soundtrack and the overall comedy is great. Rick Moranis and Annie Potts are incredible in their supporting roles, and Bill Murray, Harold Ramis, and Dan Aykroyd are always a delight. Sigourney Weaver is a treasure and should be hailed as one of the all-time greats if she isn't already. But Ernie Hudson got fucked over in the first movie, and we thought it was because he was a new actor, and also because the part was originally written for Eddie Murphy. When he got fucked over in this movie... there was no excuse. They did Winston HELLA dirty. Enjoy. Ghostbusters

Ahoy, Motherfuckers! In preparation for Ghostbusters: Afterlife, we decided to dedicate this month to the Ghostbusters franchise, beginning with the almighty classic released in 1984. The movie is nearly flawless, except for the issues that Derik had with it, and we had an absolute blast watching it and discussing the many ways that Peter Venkman is a jerk. Also, Walter Peck was right, and Al Powell worked in New York before moving to LA, just like John MacClaine. Enjoy.
