The original Hip- Hop Congressman - Rep. André Carson on Hip-Hop, Power & the Soul of Democracy

Season 5 of Hip Politics kicks off with one of the most authentic conversations in the game — and we're not just talking politics.Congressman André Carson (IN-07) sits down with us for a wide-ranging, unfiltered conversation that bridges the streets of Indianapolis to the halls of Congress. This isn't your typical political interview. This is for the culture. For the first time ever, Congressman Carson shares the story of his personal encounter with Tupac Shakur during one of Pac's visits to Indiana — a moment that shaped his understanding of what hip-hop means as a force for community, truth, and power. This alone makes the episode essential listening. But we go deeper. Carson breaks down how he's actively worked alongside hip-hop artists and community voices to connect with people across the country — not as a political move, but as a genuine expression of who he is. As co-founder of the Congressional Hip-Hop Power and Justice Task Force, he's turned culture into policy. We also get real about where the Democratic Party stands heading into 2026. Carson doesn't sugarcoat it — the party must evolve, meet people where they are, and speak the language of the communities it says it represents. This is the episode that sets the tone for all of Season 5. We’ve Been Lied To: Why ‘Being Nice’ Is Actually Holding You Back

In this episode of the Hip-Politics Podcast, host Cameron Calvin sits down with author Amira Barger, the author behind The Price of Nice, for a timely and unfiltered conversation about one of the most deeply ingrained social norms shaping our culture.Together, they unpack why “niceness” is not the harmless virtue we’ve been taught to celebrate, but a powerful social construct that often silences dissent, prioritizes comfort over progress, and keeps systems of inequity firmly in place. Barger challenges the idea that being agreeable is the same as being good, while Cameron explores how these dynamics show up in politics, leadership, culture, and everyday power dynamics. The discussion moves through the book’s four core dimensions—how we think, feel, act, and revisit our choices—offering listeners practical insight into how real change requires discomfort, honesty, and consistent action. From personal reflection to structural critique, this episode is a wake-up call for anyone who feels stuck in “good enough” and ready for more authentic conversations and meaningful transformation. If you’ve ever felt the tension between being liked and doing what’s right, this episode will challenge you to rethink the true cost of staying nice—and what it takes to reclaim your voice.

Following the release of the amateur cell phone video that caught the killing on film, the city erupted in protests that turned ugly fast. These demonstrations turned to vandalism and looting that caused destruction to local businesses and neighborhoods throughout the twin cities. The week of protests left many families without a place to go and basic needs and small business owners wondering if they could ever recover. One local area man, our special guest Ayo Idowu, could not stand idly by and watch his town suffer so he decided to do something. Soon that $200 turned to almost $25,000 in less than 2 weeks. Tune into this episode to see how this ex-NFL player took his passion for his community and turned it into real action.
