    Liu Pengli part 2

What is a serial killer? A serial killer is typically defined as a person who commits a series of murders, usually with significant intervals of time between them. These killings are often carried out in a similar fashion and are driven by a psychological urge or compulsion. Key characteristics of serial killers include:1. **Multiple Murders**: 2. **Psychological Gratification**: 3. **Patterns or Characteristics**: 4. **Periods of Dormancy**: 5. **Compulsion**: 6. **Lack of Personal Connection**: 7. **Deceptive and Manipulative**: One of the earliest people recorded that fit this bill nearly perfectly is the Han Dynasty ripper, Liu Pengli at the age of 29 will terrorize his inherited kingdom’s citizens, by murdering, plundering for the sport of it. Eventually a citizen will alert the emperor and the court would request his execution. Supposedly however, Liu would be banished to Shangyong and stripped of his sovereignty instead.Today we explore this tale and provide much more context to it going over what we can glean from the few accounts of this era in China about the Han Dynasty and the possible political intrigue that would lead to this serial killer being banished and not executed for his heinous crimes. We will ask the questions: How did this all come to be? Who was Liu Pengli? Why was he banished if he was a prince? How many people did he actually kill? And how much of this is true? All this and much more will be answered on Today’s Historical Quarrel.Remember if you have any suggestions or just want to talk please email us at:[email protected] you want to support the show join our Patreon!https://patreon.com/user?u=81215639&utm_medium=clipboard_copy&utm_source=copyLink&utm_campaign=creatorshare_fan&utm_content=join_linkOr you can find us through our socials:FacebookHistorical Quarrels Podcast (@historicalquarrels) | Instagram(1) Historical Quarrels (@HQuarrels) / TwitterPlease remember to be leave a review if you liked or didnt like the episode. Christman Genipperteinga Holy Roman Serial Killer

In the shadowy realms of history, where fact and folklore intertwine, the tale of Christman Genipperteinga stands as a chilling testament to the power of narrative and the enigma of the past. Said to have been a prolific serial killer, his story emerges from the mists of the Rhineland in the late 16th century—a time rife with superstition, where the printed word was as feared as the sword. According to a pamphlet published in the year of his supposed demise in 1581, Genipperteinga's reign of terror spanned over a decade, claiming over 900 lives, a figure that defies belief and yet has ensnared the imagination for centuries. But was he a genuine harbinger of death, or a phantom born from the era's obsession with the macabre? The absence of sorcery or demonic pacts in his narrative deviates from the era's typical villain, offering no supernatural scapegoats for his purported deeds. Instead, we're left with the bare bones of a tale that's as stark as it is sensational. Did Genipperteinga truly exist, or was he the creation of a society enthralled by the gruesome and the grotesque? Did historical records fail to capture his shadow, or was his legend merely a fabrication, a piece of propaganda in an age that understood the value of fear? We delve deep into the dark heart of this mystery, seeking whispers of truth in a cacophony of myth. This is the tale, this is the riddle, this is the Historical Quarrel of Christman Genipperteinga!Remember if you have any suggestions or just want to talk please email us at:[email protected] you want to support the show join our Patreon!https://patreon.com/user?u=81215639&utm_medium=clipboard_copy&utm_source=copyLink&utm_campaign=creatorshare_fan&utm_content=join_linkOr you can find us through our socials:FacebookHistorical Quarrels Podcast (@historicalquarrels) | Instagram(1) Historical Quarrels (@HQuarrels) / TwitterPlease remember to be leave a review if you liked or didnt like the episode. On the windswept shores of Massachusetts in the early 18th century, two cousins, Samuel and John Adams, stood at the crossroads of history. The streets of Boston echoed with the footsteps of patriots and loyalists alike, each side jostling for dominance in a land teetering on the edge of revolution. The scent of saltwater melded with the distant cries of street vendors, painting a picture of a colony alive with passion and uncertainty. In the hallowed halls of Harvard, Samuel, with fire in his belly, absorbed the revolutionary ideas that would shape his destiny. Meanwhile, John, with a lawyer's precision, argued the principles that would become the bedrock of a new nation. Their discussions, both public and private, became legendary, capturing the essence of a burgeoning nation's spirit. As the Sons of Liberty plotted in darkened rooms and the first shots of the Revolution rang out, it was evident that this was more than a mere colonial rebellion. It was a clash of ideologies, a struggle for the soul of a nation. At its heart were two men, kin by blood but often divergent in thought, both determined to shape the destiny of the United States. In the aftermath, as the smoke cleared and a new nation emerged, the Adams' influence was undeniable. Were they simply products of their Puritan upbringing, destined to lead? Or were they architects of their fate, driven by a vision for their homeland? How did their legacies, intertwined with their beliefs, pave the way for the birth of the Democratic and Republican parties?Join us on this episode of Historical Quarrels as we dive deep into the lives and times of Samuel and John Adams. Guided by the wisdom of Voltaire, who said, "History is the record of the past, and prophecy of the future," let's uncover the roots of America's political foundations and the familial ties that bound them.Remember if you have any suggestions or just want to talk please email us at:[email protected] you want to support the show join our Patreon!https://patreon.com/user?u=81215639&utm_medium=clipboard_copy&utm_source=copyLink&utm_campaign=creatorshare_creator&utm_content=join_linkOr you can find us through our socials:FacebookHistorical Quarrels Podcast (@historicalquarrels) | Instagram(1) Historical Quarrels (@HQuarrels) / TwitterPlease remember to be leave a review if you liked or didnt like the episode. America's Origins

On a crisp October morning in 1620, the Mayflower's prow cut through the waters of Cape Cod, bringing with it a group of religious dissenters seeking sanctuary in a new land. Among them was a young William Bradford, his eyes filled with dreams of a society where his beliefs would not earn him scorn. The vast stretch of the New World before him promised a fresh start, but it also concealed challenges that would test the very fabric of his faith.Several years later, in the bustling settlement of Boston, Anne Hutchinson convened her weekly religious meeting. As she shared her thoughts on the covenant of grace, her words found resonance in many but also sowed the seeds of unease among the Puritan elite. Her belief in a direct connection with God, bypassing the established clergy, was radical, bordering on heretical in the eyes of the colony's leaders. In the echoing chambers of the Church of England, murmurs of discontentment grew. The Puritans, with their relentless push to "purify" the Church, were increasingly seen as disruptive dissenters. Their call for autonomy, combined with their peculiar democratic leanings, was unsettling the traditional order. Why were these Puritans, with their seemingly heretical ways, so insistent on redefining the religious landscape? And how did their fervor lead them to the shores of a continent thousands of miles away? The unfolding tale of Bradford and Hutchinson reveals a story of faith, persecution, and the quest for religious freedom. It is a tale of a fledgling society grappling with its identity, setting the foundation for a nation that would, in time, become synonymous with liberty and democracy.Join us today on Historical Quarrels as we journey back to the tumultuous 17th century. Channeling the wisdom of the ancients, who believed that "From the seeds of discord grow the flowers of wisdom and understanding," let's embark on this exploration of our historical quarrel, where religious fervor meets the birth of American democracy.Remember if you have any suggestions or just want to talk please email us at:[email protected] you want to support the show join our Patreon!https://patreon.com/user?u=81215639&utm_medium=clipboard_copy&utm_source=copyLink&utm_campaign=creatorshare_creator&utm_content=join_linkOr you can find us through our socials:FacebookHistorical Quarrels Podcast (@historicalquarrels) | Instagram(1) Historical Quarrels (@HQuarrels) / TwitterPlease remember to be leave a review if you liked or didnt like the episode. The Dog of Montargis

Marquer readied himself in the sand as the crowd began to chant FIGHT FIGHT FIGHT FIGHT!!!! This make shift arena hastily scrambled together might very well be his grave. As the kings guard came in they equipped him with a weapon to defend himself against his opponent. As his nerves steadied and his mind came into sharp focus he told himself “All I need to do is kill him and then I will have gotten away with it” Images flashed in his mind of a forest and the battered body of Aubrey and of his hands digging up a shallow grave to hide his horrific deed and then quickly the image of the one witness to his crime came sharply into his mind. This trial by combat would be his only way to be free of all suspicion, all he needed to do was kill his witness here and he would walk away a free man. His thoughts changed as the crowd roared but all of that noise began to fade as he heard his opponents growl from across the arena. A primal fear erupted into Marquer and his hair began to stand up on its own as he heard his witness growl, thoughts of escape came quickly and he searched for an exit but alas the only way out was by finishing the job he had started in that forest. Marquer had only a split second to respond once the battle commenced as his opponent rushed at him trying to grab at his neck, he dashed to the side barely avoiding a fatal blow but his opponent, with inhuman speed, rebounded back and caught Marquers neck with his teeth. As the teeth sank in Marquer could feel the searing pain it was causing him and began screaming out as he could feel his own blood begin to drip down into his opponent’s maw until at last he screamed “ILL CONFESS! ILL CONFESS JUST GET THIS DAMNED DOG OFF OF ME!” After Marquer screamed that; his opponent released his grip and went back to his new master and received the best belly rub of his life oh yes he did what a good boy he was!Join us today on Historical Quarrels as I give you the full context to the murder of Aubrey de Montididier and his loyal greyhound who would avenge his masters murder in what has to be one of the craziest potentially true crime stories I have ever learned about. Empress Irene

On the pivotal day of September 24, 787 AD, Empress Irene of the Byzantine Empire sat in the grand hall of Hagia Sophia in Nicaea. The air was filled with the scent of incense and a sense of divine purpose, as bishops, abbots, and theologians from across the Christian world convened for what would be the Second Council of Nicaea. Outside the chamber were her critics and supporters alike, their whispers a reminder of the political and religious chasm that had divided the empire for over half a century—the contentious issue of Iconoclasm.Just the day before, Irene had taken a moment to consult with Tarasios, the Patriarch of Constantinople, who had been a layman until she appointed him. The two were ideological allies in a Byzantine court that had seen decades of religious discord. For Tarasios, and indeed for Irene, the Council represented a turning point, a chance to put to rest a religious controversy that had sown division and discord. The Council would determine whether icons, a focal point in the daily life and worship of many Christians, would be considered sacred or heretical. As each point was debated, and religious texts and traditions examined, it was clear that the Council was not merely an academic exercise. It was a spiritual reckoning, affecting not just the empire but the broader world of Christendom. By the end of the Council, the veneration of icons was affirmed, and those in opposition were declared heretics. The decision would shape Orthodox Christianity and resonate through the centuries, even attracting the endorsement of Pope Hadrian I.In that intricate dance of theology and power, the Byzantine Empire—and Christian orthodoxy itself—was indelibly altered. Was Irene a devout believer, acting on a deeply-held spiritual conviction, or was she a master of statecraft, using religion to consolidate her rule? Were the attendees of the Council faithful theologians or political agents?Join us today on Historical Quarrels as we explore these questions and many more. As stated earlier, Irene was a complex figure whose reign encompassed moments of both religious fervor and political intrigue. Drawing on the wisdom of Socrates, who asserted that "An unexamined life is not worth living," let us delve into the enigmatic world of Empress Irene, the Second Council of Nicaea, and a decision that would leave an indelible mark on both the Eastern Orthodox and Roman Catholic Churches for centuries to come.Remember if you have any suggestions or just want to talk please email us at:[email protected] you can find us through our socials:FacebookHistorical Quarrels Podcast (@historicalquarrels) | Instagram(1) Historical Quarrels (@HQuarrels) / TwitterPlease remember to be leave a review if you liked or didnt like the episode. Byzantine Empire

On the chilling night of August 15, 717 AD, Emperor Leo III stood atop the battlements of Constantinople, overlooking the straits of the Bosphorus. The glinting armor of the Umayyad army, led by Caliph Sulayman, spread like a sea of menace on the horizon. The scent of saltwater mixed with the tang of metal and sweat, capturing the essence of a civilization on the precipice. Arrayed before the city's walls, the Arab forces marked the second time in a generation that the Islamic empire sought to capture the jewel of the Byzantine Empire.Earlier that day, Leo III had convened a clandestine meeting with his generals and advisors, including the esteemed Patriarch of Constantinople. The discussions were intense and fraught with anxiety. Constantinople's defenses were formidable but worn; the massive chain blocking the Golden Horn was a psychological deterrent as much as a physical one. This was a moment of reckoning, not just for the empire but for Christendom itself. As the Umayyad navy attempted to circumvent the chain and their ground forces probed the city's fortifications, it became clear that this was more than a mere military confrontation. The outcome of this siege could redraw the map of a world divided between the Cross and the Crescent. At stake was not just territory, but the legacy of Rome and the future of Christianity in the East.In a stunning turn of events, a series of Byzantine naval victories and a harsh winter set the stage for the lifting of the siege by August of 718. The resilience and ingenuity of the defenders had prevailed. Was Leo III a savior of Christendom? Or was he simply using it as a tool to lift the spirits of his people during war? How did the Christians go from being the simply favored religion of the Roman Empire to imposing its will upon other nations?Join us today on Historical Quarrels as we unpack these questions and more. Drawing inspiration from Sun Tzu, who proclaimed, "Opportunities multiply as they are seized," let us delve into the intricate layers of this 3rd slice of a religious Historical Quarrel!Remember if you have any suggestions or just want to talk please email us at:[email protected] you can find us through our socials:FacebookHistorical Quarrels Podcast (@historicalquarrels) | Instagram(1) Historical Quarrels (@HQuarrels) / TwitterPlease remember to be leave a review if you liked or didnt like the episode. Emperor Constantine

On the fateful day of October 28, 312 AD, Constantine stood on the precipice of destiny as he faced the River Tiber, near the Milvian Bridge. The air was thick with the smell of damp earth and metal, the weight of impending battle settling over the troops. Across the river waited Maxentius, a rival claimant to the Roman throne, his army poised for the clash that would decide the future of an empire.Hours before, the sky had opened up to Constantine, presenting him with a vision—an inscribed Christian symbol and the words "In Hoc Signo Vinces," or "By this sign, you will conquer." The sign was hastily painted on the shields of his soldiers, a divine endorsement that transformed the upcoming conflict into a holy war.Among Constantine's advisors was Lactantius, a Christian educator known for his wisdom. He had long been advocating for tolerance toward the Christians, persecuted minorities seen as threats to traditional Roman beliefs. For Lactantius, the vision affirmed that the tides of destiny were shifting, not only for Constantine but also for the Christian faith. As the two armies clashed in the carnage of sword and shield, it became evident that this was no mere battle for political power—it was a war for the soul of Rome itself. When Maxentius' forces were driven back and he met his watery death in the Tiber, Constantine's victory was seen as nothing short of miraculous. The Christian symbol on the shields of his soldiers was now a herald of divine favor, and Constantine would carry this conviction through the rest of his reign. In that single, violent day, the destiny of an empire and a religion was changed forever. Was Constantine a true convert, touched by divine insight, or a savvy political strategist, seizing the moment to consolidate power? Were the Christians merely pawns in a grander political scheme, or the beneficiaries of a newfound era of religious tolerance?Join us today on Historical Quarrels as we delve into these questions and more. As the philosopher Socrates once said, "An unexamined life is not worth living." Let us then examine the complexities surrounding Constantine, the Battle of the Milvian Bridge, and a conversion that would shape the Western world for millennia to come.Remember if you have any suggestions or just want to talk please email us at:[email protected] you can find us through our socials:FacebookHistorical Quarrels Podcast (@historicalquarrels) | Instagram(1) Historical Quarrels (@HQuarrels) / TwitterPlease remember to be leave a review if you liked or didnt like the episode.
