History From The Middle Podcast
by Harriet Backhouse and Lara Tiana
Middle children don’t usually get to be the hero of the story. We’re not the eldest, calling the shots, or the youngest, getting away with everything. We’re the ones in between — watching, mediating, and noticing how everyone else’s story fits together. It turns out that isn’t such a bad way to approach history either. Too often, history is told from the top — the kings, generals and winners — or from the bottom, through the people who experienced it. We’re interested in the middle;the go-betweens, the overlooked voices, and the moments when two sides had to actually talk to each other. Each episode, we’ll explore a person, perspective or debate that can get lost when history is only told from one end. Our aim is simple: to make history accessible, conversational and genuinely fun — so you finish every episode having learnt something new and, hopefully, had a laugh along the way.
