Pope or Emperor? The Guelphs and Ghibellines
For generations, the Guelphs and Ghibellines divided the cities and families of medieval Italy, but behind the strange names was a much older struggle over the power of pope and emperor. From Frederick Barbarossa and the Lombard League to Frederick II and the violent factions of Florence, we trace how a German dynastic dispute became a deeply personal Italian conflict of politics, family, exile, and revenge. Then Dante enters the story, as the victorious Florentine Guelphs turn against one another and set the stage for the next chapter in our four-part journey through power, faction, and the changing medieval order. #HistoryOfThePapacy #GuelphsAndGhibellines #Dante #MedievalHistory #ItalianHistory #Florence #HolyRomanEmpire #Papacy #ChurchHistory #MiddleAges Let us know what you think about this episode in the comments section below! The Shroud of Turin: Pulling the Threads
The Shroud of Turin has been called the burial cloth of Jesus, but how far back can its documented history actually be traced? This episode follows the evidence from medieval France through Constantinople and into Edessa, the true historical black hole in the Shroud’s proposed chain of custody. Along the way, we examine the radiocarbon evidence, the mysterious Mandylion, Byzantine Iconoclasm, and whether the Shroud influenced Christian art or was shaped by it. The missing evidence may prevent certainty, but it also helps explain how an artifact of uncertain origin became one of Christianity’s most powerful sacred images. #ShroudOfTurin #ChurchHistory #ChristianHistory #SacredArt #ByzantineHistoryLet us know what you think about this episode in the comments section below! Christianity Before Creeds and Canons
In this episode we ask a simple but far reaching question, before the canon and creeds were fully settled, what were Christians actually doing in worship and prayer? They explore the Didache, Justin Martyr, oral tradition, and the catacombs to show that early Christian life was structured, communal, and already deeply rooted in liturgical practice. This episode opens the door to a bigger conversation about how the earliest Christians lived their faith before later definitions and debates took center stage. England’s Anonymous Against Rome
In this episode, Steve Guerra and Patrick Young return from the English exile communities abroad to look at what happened to those who remained in England after 1066. They explore the persecution of native clergy, the forced replacement of the Anglo-Saxon church order, and the remarkable protest of the Anonymous of York, who saw England standing at a crossroads as Rome and the Normans reshaped everything. This is the story of how an older English Christian world was not only conquered, but systematically erased.Subscribe to Forgotten Christianity on Substack: https://forgottenchristianity.substack.com/ #HistoryOfThePapacy #ForgottenChristianity #NormanConquest #AngloSaxonEngland #ChurchHistory #MedievalHistory #AnonymousOfYork #GregorianReform #ChristianHistory #EnglishHistory Let us know what you think about this episode in the comments section below! Zion on Grand Island: America’s Almost Jewish Homeland
In this episode, we follow a strange line from Lydia Maria Child’s The American Frugal Housewife into one of the oddest and most fascinating episodes in early American religious history. Mordechai Manuel Noah, one of the most prominent Jewish Americans of the early 19th century, imagined Grand Island in the Niagara River as Ararat, a city of refuge for the Jewish people. The plan failed almost immediately, but it still reveals an early form of proto-Zionism and the complicated place of religious minorities in the American project. #HistoryOfThePapacy #JewishHistory #AmericanReligiousHistory #GrandIsland #Zionism #Israel #ChristianZionism #Jewish #Judaism #MiddleEast #Palestine #MordechaiManuelNoah #ReligiousHistory #EarlyAmerica #HistoryPodcast Listen or Watch:https://youtu.be/wn5MRYwrnsk Support the show:Patreon: http://patreon.com/historyofthepapacyBuy me a coffee! https://buymeacoffee.com/historyofthepapacyBuy me a book: http://bit.ly/40ckJ8Ehttps://www.youtube.com/@thehistoryofthepapacyHave questions, comments or feedback? The Lost English Colony of the Dark Ages
After the Norman Conquest, many Anglo-Saxon nobles, clergy, and warriors refused to submit and instead chose exile, fleeing not just to Scotland and Scandinavia, but all the way to Constantinople and the Eastern Roman Empire. The episode explores the remarkable tradition of around 10,000 English exiles traveling by ship, receiving lands from the emperor, and helping form English communities far from home, even in places remembered as a kind of early “New England” on the Black Sea. Steve Guerra and Patrick Young also trace how these exiles entered imperial service through the Varangian Guard, showing that the fall of Anglo-Saxon England did not mean the end of its people, identity, or Christian inheritance. The Normans Remade the Christian World
In this episode, Steve Guerra and Patrick Young explored how the Norman Conquest reshaped far more than the English throne, remaking the Church, culture, and power structures of Anglo-Saxon England. They discussed papal backing for William’s invasion, the drive for ecclesiastical uniformity, the displacement of native clergy, and the deeper changes that rippled across the Christian world after 1066. This was not only the story of a conquest, but of how the Normans helped remake the Christian world. #HistoryOfThePapacy #ForgottenChristianity #NormanConquest #1066 #ChurchHistory #MedievalHistory #AngloSaxonEngland #ChristianHistory Subscribe to Forgotten Christianity on Substack: https://forgottenchristianity.substack.com/ Let us know what you think about this episode in the comments section below! 1066 Was Not Just a Battle: It Was a Church Revolution
In this first collaboration with Patrick Young of the Forgotten Christianity Substack, we looked at the Norman invasion of Anglo-Saxon England through a religious lens, asking how 1066 transformed not just a kingdom, but the English Church itself. Steve Guerra and Patrick Young explored papal power, the growing divide between East and West, and the older Christian world the Normans helped uproot. #HistoryOfThePapacy #ForgottenChristianity #ChurchHistory #NormanConquest #1066 #AngloSaxonEngland #MedievalHistory #ChristianHistory Subscribe to Forgotten Christianity on Substack: https://forgottenchristianity.substack.com/ Support the show: Patreon: http://patreon.com/historyofthepapacyBuy me a coffee! https://buymeacoffee.com/historyofthepapacyBuy me a book: http://bit.ly/40ckJ8Ehttps://www.youtube.com/@thehistoryofthepapacyHave questions, comments or feedback? Our Country, Their Peril
In this episode, we looked at Josiah Strong’s Our Country and the wider Protestant fears that shaped late nineteenth century America, especially anxiety over Catholic immigrants, cities, and the future of the nation. We then connected those ideas to the racialized hatred faced by Italian immigrants, culminating in the 1891 mass lynching in New Orleans, where anti-immigrant prejudice and public violence collided. This was a story about how religion, race, and nationalism fused in American life and helped define who counted as truly American. #HistoryOfThePapacy #AmericanCatholicHistory #JosiahStrong #Nativism #AntiCatholicism #ImmigrationHistory #ItalianAmericanHistory #NewOrleans1891 #ChurchHistory #USHistorySupport the show:Buy me a coffee! https://buymeacoffee.com/historyofthepapacyPatreon: http://patreon.com/historyofthepapacyBuy me a book: http://bit.ly/40ckJ8EHave questions, comments or feedback? Fire on the Frontier: The Burned Over District and America’s Religious
In the early nineteenth century, a stretch of upstate New York became one of the most spiritually charged regions in American history. Known as the Burned Over District, this frontier landscape was shaped by relentless revivals, bold preachers, and a growing belief that individuals could choose salvation and reshape society. In this episode of the History of the Papacy Podcast, Steve Guerra is joined by historian John Fagant of the Buffalo Presidential Center (https://www.buffalopresidentialcenter.org) to explore how the Second Great Awakening transformed western New York into a proving ground for religious innovation. At the center of the story is Charles Grandison Finney, whose revival campaigns challenged older ideas of predestination and emphasized free will, moral responsibility, and action. The conversation traces how revival culture spilled beyond churches into abolitionism, women’s rights, education reform, and other movements that continue to shape American public life. What began as a regional religious phenomenon became a national turning point in how Americans understood faith, authority, and reform. #HistoryOfThePapacy #BurnedOverDistrict #SecondGreatAwakening #AmericanReligiousHistory #ChurchHistory #BuffaloHistory #UpstateNewYork #ReligiousReform Support the show:Buy me a coffee! https://buymeacoffee.com/historyofthepapacyPatreon: http://patreon.com/historyofthepapacyBuy me a book: http://bit.ly/40ckJ8EHave questions, comments or feedback? From Wilderness to City Streets: How Urbanization Shaped American Catholicism
From early canal towns to rapidly expanding industrial cities, in this episode, we are joined by fellow Buffalonian John Fagant, trustee of the Buffalo Presidential Center to explore how Catholic immigrants and clergy shaped American communities during a time of major growth. Using the story of frontier-era Buffalo as a case study, we follow how the Erie Canal, massive migration from Ireland and Germany, parish building, and rising nativism transformed both urban life and the Catholic Church. The episode also looks at church–state conflicts, public schooling debates, social tensions, and the national political landscape leading up to the Civil War. This is a great look at how movement, growth, and faith changed the landscape of the United States.Listen wherever you get your podcasts. #HistoryPodcast #CatholicHistory #EarlyAmerica #ImmigrationHistory #UrbanHistory #USHistory #PapacyPodcastwww.buffalopresidentialcenter.orgSupport the show:Buy me a coffee! https://buymeacoffee.com/historyofthepapacyPatreon: http://patreon.com/historyofthepapacyBuy me a book: http://bit.ly/40ckJ8EHave questions, comments or feedback? Marx, Lincoln, and the American Mind
In this episode of The History of the Papacy Podcast, Steve Guerra sits down with historian Andrew Hartman, author of Karl Marx in America, to explore how the revolutionary thinker’s ideas collided with the realities of 19th-century America. From Marx’s reflections on slavery and labor to his unlikely connection with Abraham Lincoln, the discussion reveals how debates about freedom, democracy, and class defined the American experience. What did Marx see in the U.S. and what did Lincoln see that Marx understood? #HistoryPodcast #KarlMarx #AbrahamLincoln #AndrewHartman #CivilWar #AmericanHistory #CatholicHistory #Marxism #IntellectualHistory #PhilosophyOfHistory Where to buy Karl Marx in America By Andrew Hartman: https://a.co/d/htMl94aSupport the show:Buy me a coffee! https://buymeacoffee.com/historyofthepapacyPatreon: http://patreon.com/historyofthepapacyBuy me a book: http://bit.ly/40ckJ8EHave questions, comments or feedback? The Anti-Masonic Uprising: Catholics and the Anti-Masonic Party
In this episode of our American Catholic History series, we explore the dramatic rise and lasting impact of Anti-Masonry in the early United States. The strange and haunting story of William Morgan's disappearance in 1826 set off a political wildfire, leading to the creation of the Anti-Masonic Party, the nation’s first third party. We’ll trace how this populist movement emerged out of fear of secret societies, clashed with Catholic ideas, and became a launching pad for major figures like William Wirt, Millard Fillmore, Thaddeus Stevens, and William Seward. Though Catholics and Anti-Masons shared deep suspicions about Freemasonry, their goals and values rarely aligned.#CatholicHistory #AntiMasonry #Freemasonry #AmericanHistory #SecretSocieties #Masons #WilliamMorgan #KnowNothingParty #CatholicPodcast #HistoryPodcast #AmericanCatholicism Support the show:Buy me a coffee! https://buymeacoffee.com/historyofthepapacyPatreon: http://patreon.com/historyofthepapacyBuy me a book: http://bit.ly/40ckJ8EHave questions, comments or feedback?
