035 | I'm Struggling to be Intimate After Porn Betrayal
You may still love your husband and want your marriage to heal, yet find yourself tensing, freezing or pulling away when he reaches for you.You may miss the closeness you once shared while also feeling frightened, exposed, angry, numb or disconnected when sexual intimacy is mentioned.Perhaps you feel guilty and wonder what is wrong with you. You may believe that forgiveness should mean being able to have sex again or worry that your husband will return to pornography if you cannot meet his needs. In this tender episode of Hope After, Jo explains why struggling with intimacy after pornography betrayal does not mean a wife is broken, cruel, unforgiving or deliberately punishing her husband.Betrayal affects the body.Broken trust affects desire.Secrecy affects safety. The body may tense, shut down or pull away because it is trying to protect the wife from something it now associates with comparison, secrecy, pressure or emotional danger.Deep wounds do not heal through pressure. They heal through safety. In this episode, Jo explores:• Why intimacy can feel completely different after discovering pornography• How betrayal can affect the way a wife experiences being seen and touched• Why freezing, numbness, anger or avoidance may be protective responses• Why intimacy is not proof of forgiveness• How comparison with pornography can turn sex into a performance• Why a husband’s response to his wife’s hesitation matters deeply• How non-sexual affection may need to be rebuilt before sexual intimacy• Why a wife’s body must never become her husband’s recovery tool• The difference between desire, duty and fearful compliance• What to do when a wife misses intimacy but still feels unable to engage• Practical ways to rebuild emotional and physical safety• How Christian teaching about sex can be misused against a wounded wife• What safe, patient and accountable husbands can say and do• Language wives can use to explain their boundaries and needs• Why intimacy may still involve grief, pauses and triggers when it resumes• How healing can be measured by growing safety, not simply by whether sex has returnedA wife should never have sex because she is afraid of what her husband might do if she says no.Her body is not his sobriety plan. Her sexual availability is not his accountability structure.Intimacy after betrayal must be rebuilt through truth, consent, patience, tenderness, emotional safety and trust—not guilt, obligation, fear or performance.Hope After is a Christ-centred programme for couples rebuilding after pornography has entered the marriage. 034 | How to Support Your Husband with His Porn Addiction when You Are Still Hurting
How do you support your husband’s recovery from pornography when you are still deeply hurt by what he has done? Many wives find themselves caught in this painful tension. They may want their husband to become free from pornography and perhaps still hope their marriage can heal, while also feeling angry, betrayed, numb, frightened, suspicious or emotionally exhausted. They may feel pressure to be compassionate, encouraging, forgiving and understanding before anyone has properly acknowledged or cared for their own wounds. In this episode of Hope After, Jo explores what healthy support can look like without self-abandonment.Supporting a husband’s recovery does not mean becoming responsible for it.A wife can encourage him to seek help without arranging everything for him. She can acknowledge genuine change without becoming responsible for keeping him motivated. She can tell him what helps her feel safe without becoming the police officer of his devices, behaviour and thoughts. His recovery must belong to him.In this episode, Jo explores:• Why wives often feel torn between compassion and anger• The difference between supporting recovery and carrying responsibility for it• Why a wife should not become her husband’s therapist or accountability partner• How guilt can keep women trapped in roles they were never meant to carry• What healthy, boundaried support can sound like• Why support does not mean silence, sex or immediate forgiveness• How to respond when a husband says, “I need your support”• Why checking devices and constantly watching behaviour can exhaust the wife• How a husband can create accountability that does not rely on his wife policing him• Why the wife’s betrayal trauma needs support too• How faith, forgiveness, grace and boundaries can exist together• Practical boundaries that may help protect the wife’s wellbeing• What husbands can do to become easier to support safely• What to do when the wife does not currently have the capacity to support him closely• How a structured weekly recovery check-in may help some couplesA wife can want her husband to recover without becoming responsible for whether he does. She can care about his freedom without silencing her own pain. She can show compassion without absorbing his shame. She can forgive, in time and with God’s help, without pretending trust has already been rebuilt. Her healing matters too.Hope AfterHope After is a Christ-centred programme for couples rebuilding after pornography has entered the marriage. 033 | "I don't look like those women! How can I compete with porn?"
After discovering pornography in her marriage, a wife may begin comparing everything about herself to the women her husband viewed. Were they younger? Thinner? More confident? More attractive? Was that what he really wanted? Was her own body ever enough? These questions are not simply vanity or insecurity. They often come from a mind trying to understand betrayal and make sense of why something outside the marriage was given access to a place that should have been protected. In this episode of Hope After, Jo talks honestly about the deep comparison wound pornography can create and why telling a wife to “just stop comparing yourself” does not address the real problem.Pornography presents an impossible and dishonest comparison. It offers bodies without real lives, vulnerability, ageing, responsibility, relationship or covenant. A wife is not an image or a performance. She is a whole person with a heart, a history and a body that has lived.Yet simply saying that porn is fake does not erase the pain, because the husband still chose it. That choice must be acknowledged and owned. Healing does not begin by minimising what happened or telling the wife that it was not about her. It begins when truth is told, responsibility is taken and her pain is treated as real.Jo also explores:• Why pornography can damage a wife’s body image and sexual confidence• Why reassurance such as “You’re beautiful” may no longer feel believable• How betrayal can make intimacy feel confusing or unsafe• Why a wife should never be pressured to resume sex before trust has been rebuilt• What husbands need to understand about repeated questions and comparison triggers• How unhelpful Christian responses can deepen the wound• Why forgiveness is not the same as pretending there has been no damage• How accountability, consistency and emotional safety support genuine recovery• Why a wife does not need to become more like pornography to save her marriageA healed marriage does not ask the wife to become a better fantasy. It asks the husband to become a safer man.The wife was never meant to compete with pornography. Porn is not her rival because she somehow lost. It is an intruder because it should never have been invited into the marriage.Healing begins when blame is placed where it belongs, truth enters the room and the wife’s worth is no longer measured against something that was never worthy of comparison.Hope AfterHope After is a Christ-centred programme for couples rebuilding after pornography has entered the marriage. 032 | Erectile Dysfunction and Porn - the thing no one wants to talk about
Erectile dysfunction is one of the most painful and least-spoken-about issues couples may face after pornography has entered a marriage. For husbands, it can bring shame, fear, humiliation and asense of failure. For wives, it can reopen wounds of rejection, comparison, betrayal and the heartbreaking question: “Was I not enough?”In this episode of Hope After, Jo and Jez gently but honestly explore the complicated relationship between pornography, erectile dysfunction, shame and rebuilding intimacy. This is not a medical diagnosis, and erectile dysfunction can have many physical, emotional or psychological causes. Ongoing ED should always be discussed with a GP or medical professional. But when ED appears in a marriage already wounded by pornography and betrayal, it rarely feels like a neutral issue. This conversation looks at why pornography can distort intimacy, how performance anxiety can develop, why silence often deepens the wound, and how couples can begin talking about this tender subject without blame, collapse or avoidance. The episode also speaks directly to wives who feel rejected and husbands who feel broken, offering a Christ-centred path toward honesty, responsibility, tenderness and hope.In this episode, we talk about:Why erectile dysfunction can feel especially difficult after pornography betrayalThe shame many men carry around sexual performanceWhy wives may experience ED as rejection, comparison or another layer of betrayalHow pornography can train arousal away from real intimacyThe difference between shame and responsibilityWhy sex cannot become the test of whether recovery is workingHow couples can begin safer, gentler conversations about intimacyWhy medical, emotional, spiritual and recovery support may all matterHow God meets couples in the places they feel most afraid to nameGentle reminderErectile dysfunction can have many causes, including physical health, medication, stress, anxiety, trauma, depression and relationship distress. If it is ongoing, please speak to a GP or qualified medical professional.Reflection questionsFor wives:When intimacy feels affected, what story do I find I tell myself? What reassurance do I need that is not only sexual? What would help me feel emotionally safer? What do I need my husband to understand about how pornography has affected this area for me?For husbands:When ED happens or intimacy feels pressured, what story do I tell about myself?Do I move toward honesty, or do I hide in shame?Have I taken appropriate responsibility medically, emotionally and spiritually? What does my wife need from me in those moments besides performance? For couples:How can we rebuild closeness without making sexual performance the only measure of progress?Key messagePornography can distort intimacy, but shame does not have to have the final word. Healing begins when secrecy is brought into the light with honesty, tenderness, responsibility and hope.Closing encouragementGod is not embarrassed by the places we are afraid to talkabout. He is not shocked by sexual brokenness, fear, shame or thesilence that can build between a husband and wife. There is hope after secrecy, shame and broken trust. And there is hope after the things no one wants to talk about.Hope After ProgrammeIf this episode has named what you are living through, the Hope After programme is there to help couples walk through recovery carefully and honestly. 031 | What Actually Helps Couples Heal from Porn Betrayal
When pornography is discovered in a marriage, the first focus is often on stopping the behaviour. Filters, accountability software, check-ins and routines can all matter. But stopping is not the same as healing. In this episode, Johanne and Jez talk about the kind of support that actually helps couples heal after porn betrayal. Not just support for the husband’s recovery, but support for the wife’s pain, the safety of the marriage, and the deeper work of rebuilding trust. They explore why helpful support begins with safety rather than pressure, why a wife needs somewhere wise and non-shaming to put her pain, and why a husband needs to move beyond shame into real responsibility. They also talk about forgiveness, reconciliation, shared language, consistency, and what it means to make room for God without pretending the wound is tidy or simple. This episode is for couples who are trying to understand what healing really requires, and for anyone who has felt the gap between “he has stopped” and “we feel safe and whole again.”In this episode we talk about:• Why stopping pornography is important, but not the whole picture• Why safety has to come before pressure to forgive or “move on”• The loneliness many wives carry after betrayal• Why a husband’s shame cannot become the centre of recovery• The difference between remorse and emotional collapse• Why couples need a shared language for betrayal, triggers, safety and repair• How Christian forgiveness language can be misused• Why healing needs support for the wife, the husband and the marriage• The power of consistency over big promises• How God meets couples in truth, grief, repentance and steady repairReflection QuestionsFor the wife:Where do I most need support at the moment: emotionally, spiritually, practically, or relationally?Have I felt free to be honest about the impact this has had on me?For the husband:Have I focused more on stopping than on understanding and repairing the damage?Am I willing for my wife to receive support, even if that feels uncomfortable for me?For you as a couple:What support do we currently have? What support is missing? Are we trying to heal alone because we are afraid, embarrassed, or unsure where to turn? What is one wise next step we could take?Hope After ProgrammeIf this episode has named what you are living through, the Hope After programme is there to help couples walk through recovery carefully and honestly.Hope After is a Christ-centred programme for couples rebuilding after pornography has entered the marriage. 030 | Shame After Porn Betrayal: Why Both Husband and Wife Hide
In this episode of Hope After, Johanne and Jez talk honestly about shame after hidden pornography is brought into the light. When the truth is finally spoken, many couples expect relief. And sometimes there is relief. But often, shame steps in too. For the husband, shame may sound like failure, exposure or fear of being fully known. For the wife, shame can become a painful internal question: Was I not enough? What does this say about me?Johanne and Jez explore the difference between guilt and shame, why guilt can lead toward repentance while shame often pulls people into hiding, and how both partners can quietly retreat from one another without meaning to.This episode gently unpacks why secrecy, silence and judgement allow shame to grow, why confession is only the beginning of healing, and why couples need honesty, emotional safety and structured support as they move forward. This is a Christ-centred conversation about coming into the light, not to be humiliated, but to be restored. In This Episode, Johanne and Jez talk about:• Why shame often intensifies after disclosure• The difference between guilt and shame• How shame affects the husband after hidden pornography is admitted• How shame affects the wife after betrayal• Why wives may internalise the betrayal and feel “not enough”• Why husbands may become defensive, distant or over-explain• The difference between protective silence and healing honesty• Why couples can look calm on the outside but feel deeply disconnected underneath• How Scripture speaks into shame, confession and restoration• Why both partners need space to process, not pressure to “move on”• How honesty becomes the beginning of healingReflection QuestionsFor the husband:• Where do I feel exposed right now?• Am I trying to fix this quickly, or understand it properly?• What am I afraid she now believes about me?• What have I been trying to manage or hide? For the wife:• What have I started to believe about myself?• Where am I carrying this alone?• What do I need in order to feel steadier?• What have I not yet said out loud? For couples:• Where are we protecting ourselves instead of connecting?• What would honest, careful conversation look like right now?Scripture Mentioned“Whoever conceals their sins does not prosper, but the one who confesses and renounces them finds mercy.”Proverbs 28:13“Those who look to Him are radiant; their faces are never covered with shame.”Psalm 34:5Need Support? If this episode has helped you put words to something you have been carrying, there is a way through this.Inside Hope After, we walk couples through this step by step. 029 | The Lies Men Tell Themselves When Using Porn — And What I See Now
In this episode of Hope After, Johanne and Jez have an honest conversation about the internal narratives that can sit underneath pornography use in marriage. This is not an episode about accusation or blame. It is about looking back with honesty, compassion and clarity, and recognising that what feels true in the middle of secrecy is often incomplete.Jez reflects on some of the things men may tell themselves when they are using pornography: It’s not that bad. It’s separate from my marriage. Everyone does it. I can stop when I want. I just didn’t think about it too much. I’m not that kind of man.Together, Johanne and Jez explore how these narratives can allow hidden behaviour to continue, how secrecy quietly affects emotional connection and trust, and why honesty is such an important turning point in healing. For wives listening, this episode may help put language to the confusion and pain of discovering that something was happening beneath the surface. For husbands listening, it is offered without condemnation, but with a clear invitation to stop minimising, stop hiding, and begin facing the truth with support.Because healing does not begin with perfect answers. It begins with honesty. In this episode, we talk about:- The internal stories men may tell themselves when pornography use is hidden. Why minimising can make something harmful feel manageable. How compartmentalising creates the illusion that pornography is separate from marriage. The role culture plays in normalising behaviour that still causes real damage. Why “I can stop when I want” often collapses when a man actually tries to stop. How avoidance keeps couples stuck. Why protecting identity can make honest confession feel frightening. The impact of secrecy on trust, intimacy and emotional connection. Why truth is painful at first, but freeing in the long run.How God brings things into the light not to shame us, but to restore us.Gentle reflection for couples:What have I told myself in order to survive, cope, avoid or make sense of what happened?Where might honesty feel frightening, but necessary? What would it look like for truth to become a doorway to healing rather than a weapon between us?For the husband listening:You are not beyond help. But avoiding the truth will keep you stuck. The sooner you are honest, the sooner real change can begin.Support is not a sign of weakness. It is part of the turning point. For the wife listening:You are not overreacting. You are responding to something real. The secrecy, distance and distortion all matter. Your need for honesty, clarity and safety is not too much.Scripture-rooted encouragement:God works in truth, not hiding. What comes into the light may feel painful at first, but light is also where restoration begins.Conviction is not the same as condemnation. God invites honesty, repentance and healing, not performance or pretending.Need support? If something in today’s episode has helped you make sense of your own experience, and you would like support as you navigate the road ahead, we’d love to hear from you.You can email us at [email protected] also offer a free fifteen-minute introductory call where you can ask questions, tell us a little about your situation, and see whether Hope After feels like the right fit for you. There is no pressure. 028 | He Says He’s Stopped Watching Porn… Should You Believe Him? (How Trust Is REALLY Rebuilt)
When a husband says, “I’ve stopped,” it can bring both relief and uncertainty. You want to believe him. You want things to be different. But something in you still feels unsettled. In this episode, we gently unpack why that tension exists — and why it’s not wrong. We explore why words alone don’t rebuild trust after pornography has been part of a marriage, what real change actually looks like, and how trust is rebuilt slowly through structure, consistency, and clarity — not just intention. This is a steady, honest conversation for couples navigating that fragile space between hope and reality. In this episode, we cover:• Why “I’ve stopped” doesn’t automatically rebuild trust • What’s happening in the brain after long-term pornography use • The difference between intention and transformation • What real, trustworthy change actually looks like • Why trust must be rebuilt through patterns, not promises • How couples can move forward with clarity instead of pressure If you’re in this place — you’re not alone. You were doing OK, things felt calmer. And then suddenly… something small happened and everything shifted. A glance. A phone. A missed message. And the fear came flooding back.In this episode, we unpack why small moments can trigger big emotional reactions after pornography has impacted a marriage - and why those reactions are not irrational, but protective. We explore what’s happening in the brain, why uncertainty feels so intense, and how couples can respond in a way that rebuilds safety instead of creating more distance. This is a steady, honest conversation to help you move from confusion to clarity in those moments.________________________________________In this episode, we cover:• Why triggers feel so intense after betrayal • What’s happening in the brain when uncertainty appears • Why your reaction isn’t “over the top” • How to respond without escalating or shutting down • How couples can rebuild safety in real-time moments • Why these moments are opportunities, not setbacks ________________________________________Includes practical conversation prompts for both husband and wife________________________________________Next Steps:If you’re navigating this in your own marriage, we walk with couples through this process inside Hope After.Find out more: hope-after.comHope After is a Christian podcast helping couples navigate the impact of pornography in marriage, betrayal trauma, and recovery after porn addiction. 026 | Why Individual Healing Isn’t Enough After Porn in Marriage (Rebuilding Trust Takes Two)
After pornography enters a marriage, many couples are encouraged to focus on individual healing. She processes her pain. He works on his behaviour. And over time, it’s hoped the relationship will come back together. But what if that approach is incomplete? In this episode, we explore why healing separately doesn’t rebuild a shared relationship, and why safety — the very thing that was broken — can only be restored together. You’ll begin to understand:• why time and space alone don’t repair betrayal • what happens in the wife’s nervous system after trust is broken • why stopping porn isn’t the same as rebuilding safety • and what the husband’s role looks like in restoring connection This is not about doing more. It’s about doing what actually helps — together.________________________________________In This Episode:• Why separate healing can leave couples feeling disconnected • The impact of betrayal on safety and emotional security • Why hypervigilance and withdrawal are protective, not rejection • The difference between stopping behaviour and rebuilding trust • How presence, consistency, and understanding begin to soften the wall ________________________________________A Gentle InvitationIf you feel like you’re both trying… but not reconnecting…Our Hope After Reset pathway is designed to guide couples through:• rebuilding safety after betrayal • understanding each other’s experience • moving forward together, not separately Explore: hope-after.com________________________________________Share This EpisodeIf this helped bring clarity, you’re welcome to share it with someonewho might need a different way forward.Hope After is a Christian podcast helping couples navigate the impact of pornography in marriage, betrayal trauma, and recovery after porn addiction. 025 | Struggling With Porn? What God Actually Does in Your Healing
Hope After is a Christian podcast helping couples navigate the impact of pornography in marriage, betrayal trauma, and recovery after porn addiction. Hosted by husband and wife Jez and Jo, who have walked this journey themselves, these conversations offer honest, compassionate guidance for couples seeking truth, responsibility, and restoration. When pornography enters a life or marriage, many Christians turn to prayer first. And rightly so. But what happens when you’ve prayed — sincerely —and the struggle doesn’t simply disappear? In this episode, we gently explore God’s role in healing from pornography, and why prayer alone can sometimes feel frustrating when deeper understanding is needed. You’ll begin to understand:• why urges don’t just “go away” through willpower or prayer alone • the difference between asking God to remove something and asking Him to reveal what’s underneath • how urges are often physical, habitual, and emotional — not just spiritual • and how God works not only through miracles, but through truth, wisdom, and process This is not about removing God from the conversation. It’s about inviting Him more fully into it.In This Episode:• Why prayer matters — but isn’t always the whole answer • Understanding urges: physical, habitual, and emotional • Why reactive strategies only go so far • The importance of identifying root causes • How God uses truth, wisdom, and support in healing Scriptures Referenced:• John 8:32 — “The truth will set you free” • Psalm 139:23–24 — “Search me, God…” • 1 Corinthians 10:13 — “No temptation has overtaken you…” • Proverbs 11:14 — “With many advisers they succeed” If this brought clarity, you’re welcome to share it with someone who might need a more grounded way forward.Learn More About Hope AfterIf this episode resonates with you and you’d like support beyond the podcast, you can learn about our six stage pathway for couples and find more by visiting:hope-after.comDownload the grounding guideWe have produced a short guide for when everything feels overwhelming after discovering pornography in your marriage.
