Lasering PCBs
Some experimentation with laser etching spray paint on bare copper-clad PCBs. Once the design is etched in the paint, I etched the copper with Ferric Chloride. Then, I removed the paint with acetone and polished.
-
Cutting SMD stencils
Experiments with cutting usable solder paste stencils with my Chinese laser cutter with a LaOS Laser controller board. I end up with a pretty successful result. See my video where I reflow solder using the stencil! http://youtu.be/KDGmJ4hlZEI

LaOS Laser part 8: Kapton Stencils
Short video comparing engraving Kapton relative to the mylar I tried before. Overall, I'm not really that impressed. I'm sure I could get better results, but with the expense ($17 for that sheet) and the soot, it's not worth it in my opinion. ...
-
LaOS Laser Part 7: X axis problems
Trying to diagnose some persistent problems with engraving on the X axis. I'm slowly coming to the conclusion that it's a software-related problem.
-
LaOS Laser Part 6: Engraving
The culmination of several months of work. I'm finally engraving and cutting with my laser cutter! The LaOS board is great, and it's nice to be able to use a nearly 100% open source workflow.
-
LaOS Laser Part 5: Troubleshooting
In this video, the LaOS board is tested while firing the laser. It is found that it exhibits the same problems as the MoshiBoard. I eventually fix the problem, in a bit of a brute-force way.
-
LaOS Laser Part 4: Configuration
In this video we configure the LaOS board for my laser cutter, and discover a failed solder joint and two firmware bugs.
-
LaOS Laser part 3: Installation
Removal of the Moshiboard and some investigation of the details of the laser power supply. This video was intended to contain the entire installation, testing and use, but that was way too long. I'll post videos for testing and use in the future.
-
LaOS Laser Part 2: i2c Display
This week's LaOS video is about the i2c display. We assemble the kit, and find a way to hack a different navigation switch onto it.
-
LaOS Laser Part 1: Mainboard build
This video is the start of a second track of videos documenting the assembly, integration, and testing of the LAOS laser controller kit. In this episode, I unpack the kit and PCBs. Then we assemble the main board, perform the smoke test, and com...

Chinese laser cutter part 5
This video documents my experiences with Moshisoft Moshidraw.
-
Chinese laser cutter part 4: Optics
This video is composed of three parts. The first investigates a novel method for aligning the mirrors of a laser cutter. The second shows the traditional method. The final section shows how to change a lens (convex side up!) and reviews a Chine...
-
Chinese laser cutter part 3: Water
This video follows me through several tests relating to the water-cooling system of the laser engraver. I also tear-down a pair of impeller-based water pumps.
-
Chinese laser cutter part 2: Power conversion
The laser power supply requires 220v. I live in the US, and 110v power is typical. The laser cutter shipped with a step-up transformer, but it is not to be trusted, see why. (Note, this is an old video. We now know that Dave Jones is a shitt...

Chinese laser cutter part 1: Intro
This is the first of many videos about the no-name Chinese laser cutter that I bought. I have several videos planned, and I'm expecting to upload one each week until I run out of material. I've had to download my videos off of YouTube because ...
