Ice Is Slippery

Ice Is Slippery is an unserious hockey podcast brought to you by one and half hockey fans. Cohosted by Kate (the hockey fan) and her husband Fred (the other one), this weekly podcast checks in on the Dallas Stars and Philadelphia Flyers and covers news and noise from around the hockey world.

  1. 0

    Mind Your Business, Bird Boy

This week on Ice is Slippery we're doing a deep dive into the NHL playoffs. Listen as we discuss lesser known players like Playoff Mitch Marner, and talk about our new frontrunner the Carolina Stankovens. Also, Fred thinks Tyler Seguin has a future in HR, and that's why he's only half a hockey fan.

  2. -1

    Mantrums

This week on Ice is Slippery, we wrap up the regular season and look ahead to the playoffs. Kate's doing wardrobe changes, Fred's still thinking about birds, and Brady Tkachuk needs to stop trying to make fetch happen.

  3. -2

    The Slow Terminator

This week on a very giggly episode of Ice is Slippery, Cole Caufield is a golden retriever, Brent Burns was the kid at school with perfect attendance, and Jack Hughes is on the verge of attending a very weird dinner party. Also, the Maple Leafs are looking for a new GM and Fred's thinking about a career switch.

  4. -3

    Unhinged Little Guy

This week on Ice is Slippery, Fred is the bad cop to Rick Tocchet's good cop and Kate is the worst Dallas fan. We also engage in a little time travel so we can bring you some exciting, late-breaking news!

  5. -4

    Fistfuls of Churros

This week on Ice is Slippery, we talk about seeing the Stars play the Avs live, including witnessing some classic player-fan interactions with Matt Duchene and Nate Bastian. Kate is also taking on new clients, and Fred came up with a musical game time that is very delightful and only a little traumatizing.

  6. -5

    The Taco Experiment

This week on Ice is Slippery, we're excited that people know the name Justin Hyrckowian (even if they're not always pronouncing it right). Kate has a lot to say about that banger game between the Oilers and the Stars, and we also think certain teams should stop wishing on monkey paws.

  7. -6

    Oops! All Small Boys!

We're back and we're so happy to be covering regular-ass hockey again. This week we do a deep dive on the trade deadline, contemplate buying a Fordyota, and declare war on Bill Guerin. Stick around for game time where we cast NHL players on Traitors.

  8. -7

    Resting Ghost Face

This week on Ice is Slippery, Kate's starting to think that if the ghosts wont leave Quinn Hughes alone, maybe the rest of us should. Meanwhile, Fred is convinced this is a Kung Fu Panda household. And apparently the Olympics are still happening!

  9. -8

    Decisively Decisive

This week on Ice is Slippery we're catching you up on all the Olympic drama, from scoring shenanigans to curling catastrophes. The phrase "genital doping" also comes up, so there's a first time for everything.

  10. -9

    Goalie Fight Winter

This week on Ice is Slippery we ask the important question, "Is the opposite of hot girl summer just goalie fight winter?" In other news we are Olympic-ing so hard. Stick around for our new segment, Fred's Curling Corner.

  11. -10

    Full Space Ghost

This week on Ice is Slippery, we're catching up on two weeks' worth of news, including Hat Trick January, the meteoric rise of Brandon Bussi, and goalie fights. We also look ahead at what to expect from the upcoming Olympics.

  12. -11

Heated Rivalry From the Queer Lens: A Collaboration at the Cottage, Part 2

In this bonus episode of Ice is Slippery, Kate continues her conversation with Jey and Ness from the Over the Glass podcast on the cultural impact of Heated Rivalry and we discuss why we may never leave the cottage. To hear part one of this crossover episode, be sure to check out Over the Glass Hockey on YouTube or your preferred podcast platform.

  13. -12

    Come On, Little Weird Dude

This week on Ice is Slippery, Quinn Hughes is still a haunted Victorian doll (but now he lives in the woods) and Beckett Sennecke is a Hot Cheeto. We weigh in on the Sidney Crosby birdwatching allegations before revisiting our game about NHL player birdsonas.

  14. -13

    A Case of the Marchments

This week on Ice is Slippery, the AI hologram of Gary Bettman turned out to just be the actual Gary Bettman and no one wants to play Monopoly with Danny Briere. Also, Fred has weird ideas about what goes into an Edible Arrangement.

  15. -14

The Jason Robertson Of It All

This week on Ice is Slippery, we do a deep dive on the recently-announced Olympic rosters, exploring surprising inclusions and exclusions. We talk about the Winter Classic, debut a new segment called Fred's Birding Corner, and wrap up with a book club-themed Game Time.

  16. -15

    Little Lord Marner

This week on Ice is Slippery, we're making New Year's resolutions on behalf of people in the NHL so we don't have to do any self-examination. It also turns out Kate has a lot of room in her heart for assorted hockey players.

  17. -16

    Heated Rivalry Discussion (Episode 6)

In this week's bonus episode of Ice is Slippery, we're talking about Episode 6 of Heated Rivalry. Kate's already been to the cottage four times, and Fred's trying to figure out how to put her into an induced coma so she isn't insufferable until 2027. We also marvel at Hudson Williams mastery over his tear ducts.

  18. -17

A Wild Barefoot Mikko Rantanen Appears

This week on Ice is Slippery, Fred's hockey name is The Okay One and Kate continues to be right about everything. Mason Marchment is on the move but still not back where he belongs, and Mavrik Bourque is an angry wet kitten. Stick around for a holiday-themed game time!

  19. -18

    Heated Rivalry Discussion (Episode 5)

Kate and Fred return with another bonus episode of Ice is Slippery to talk in-depth about episode 5 of Heated Rivalry. The hottest show on TV showed us what it's like to be emotionally sexy, and Kate scored a hat trick in crying. Meanwhile, Fred's just excited about the return of Scott Hunter.

  20. -19

    The Comebackiest of the Comebacks

This week on Ice is Slippery, Fred is full of caffeine and hot takes while Kate is filled with a deep sense of dread over the state of the central division. That doesn't stop her from making a passionate argument in defense of Jamie Benn.

  21. -20

    Heated Rivalry Discussion (Episode 4)

We're back with another bonus episode! This time we're doing an in-depth breakdown on episode 4 of Heated Rivalry (a show that seems to get better with each episode). We also touch base on the show's massive cultural impact. Mild book spoilers pop up throughout the episode, so proceed with caution.

  22. -21

    Heated Rivalry Discussion (Episodes 1-3)

In this bonus episode of Ice is Slippery, Kate and Fred take a deep dive into the first three episodes of Heated Rivalry. Kate is a hockey fan and has read the books! Fred is still only half a hockey fan and hasn't read a book since college! We're still pretty unserious, but surprisingly more thoughtful than usual.

  23. -22

    Helmet Smooching

This week on Ice is Slippery, Kate and Fred grapple with the fact that college was a long time ago before we check on the walking wounded in our extensive NHL Injury Report. Kate also did math, which is how you know she takes this podcasting thing very seriously.

  24. -23

    The Third Tkachuk

This week on Ice is Slippery, the refs have main character energy, Fred has a new understanding of beige, and Kate is doling out banger parenting tips. We also learned about each other (and ourselves) through a diabolical round of Would You Rather: Hockey Edition.

  25. -24

    The Villain Edit

This week on Ice is Slippery, we talk about what in the Mikko Rantanen is going on in Dallas and why it's bad for the narrative. We also reflect on bromance facilitator Danny Briere and other NHL things we can be thankful for.

  26. -25

    Do Not Gary Bettman

This week on Ice is Slippery, we check in on several Dallas Stars who are flourishing in their new homes and we feel totally fine and normal about it! We also begin to wonder if Kate is patient zero for the Dallas Stars curse.

  27. -26

    Leon Draisaitl's Mom Jeans

This week on Ice is Slippery, Fred's still pretty sure William Nylander's YouTube channel is a scam, and we posit that Clayton Keller has more in common with Dua Lipa than you might think. We check in with the Flyers and Stars and then Kate explains why Jamie Benn is the perfect birdwatching companion in our game about Emotional Support Hockey Players.

  28. -27

    Reverse Standing There

We're back! This Halloween-centric episode is full of tricks and treats, from Mason Marchment's ice crimes to Rick Tocchet's free-range parenting. We also broke down your favorite NHL players into horror movie villain archetypes. Who's a slasher, a mastermind, a creature or a miniature maniac? Listen and find out.

  29. -28

    The Craziest Eyes in Hockey

On this week's episode, Kate's a clutch player (or maybe that's Cates?), Lian Bichsel is either a ham sandwich or a Canada Goose, and Fred just wants to look at some birds.

  30. -29

    Angry Little Meatball

We're full of hot takes this week on the podcast, whether we're taking on William Nylander's YouTube channel or the new Victory Plus studio. Meanwhile, the Dallas Stars appear to be having fun on and off the ice this year and it's all Kate ever dreamed it could be.

  31. -30

    Actual Disney Princess Sidney Crosby

We're back! Kate's still a hockey fan and Fred is still doing his best. In this episode, we touch on some preseason highlights and check in on the current state of the Flyers and Stars. We also watched the second season of Faceoff on Amazon Prime and share our thoughts.

  32. -31

    Mitchuationship

We're back at it with another off-season overtime episode. Kate's still talking about hockey, Fred's manifesting a kaiju, so it's business as usual. We talk about some of the biggest trades and signings to go down leading up to and during free agency. We also give our initial impressions on upcycled Dallas head coach Glen Gulutzan.

  33. -32

    Nonstop Michigans

Surprise! We're back with a mini off-season episode that we're calling an overtime episode. We catch up on the Panthers drunken shenanigans tour, and check in on this year's NHL draft which was the opposite of riveting. Finally, we highlight some of the biggest trades and signings of the week, including one which righted a great cosmic injustice.

  34. -33

    Charming Rat Men

On this week's episode we wrap up our coverage of the Stanley Cup finals and follow the Florida Panthers on their drunken shenanigans tour. We also talk about the trades and signings in Dallas and look back at some of our favorite moments from the NHL season.

  35. -34

    Brad Marchand's Hot Girl Summer

This week on Ice is Slippery, Matthew Tkachuk's dropping names, the Edmonton Oilers have morphed into the Dallas Stars, and Kate and Fred are having olfactory flashbacks. We also help out some other NHL teams by assigning them girl pop anthems of their own.

  36. -35

    Boo Harder, I Like It

This week on Ice is Slippery, we check in on the Stanley Cup playoffs but not before we bid adieu to Pete DeBoer. By the way, Frank (also known as Fred) is not allowed to make any head coach hiring decisions.

  37. -36

    Last Narrative Standing

This week on Ice is Slippery, we bid farewell to Kate's beloved Dallas Stars and shared some thoughts about Noted Western Conference Loser Peter DeBoer. We also revealed why an army of Etsy witches is powerless in the face of the hockey narrative.

  38. -37

    A Plethora of Gloves

This week on Ice is Slippery, we're putting Mason Marchment on trial in a listener-inspired game time. We also think Mitch Marner should look for a low steaks team (and no that's not a typo). Finally, while some people who aren't us think that Roope Hintz should be nominated for a Best Actor Oscar we're pretty sure we're in the running for a BAFTA.

  39. -38

    Diet Torts

This week on Ice is Slippery, a lot of people have raccoon energy and there's a new set of BFFs in town. We also catch you up on round two of the playoffs, and remind you that Mason Marchment has opinions.

  40. -39

    Hockey Bagel

This week on Ice is Slippery, Fred's not good at math, Kate's not a medical expert, and Mitch Marner probably doesn't know how a garbage disposal works. We also see how round two of the playoffs are going so far, and advise eliminated teams on creative self-care practices.

  41. -40

    Doing the Maple Leaf

We're wrapping up round one of the playoffs and looking ahead to round two. In true ADHD icon fashion, the Dallas Stars waited until the last possible second before showing up with a presentation that blew everyone out of the water. The NHL scriptwriters have really outdone themselves, and Mikko Rantanen may have won the divorce.

  42. -41

    Tom Wilson's Folding Chair

It's playoff season! Kate and Fred are doing a deep dive into round one of the playoffs with check-ins on all the match ups. We talk about bench brawls, harmonica anthems, time-traveling Tyler Seguin, whatever Tom Wilson's deal is, and much more. Also, the San Jose Sharks may not be in the playoffs, but their feel-good vibes continue to bring us joy in these trying times.

  43. -42

    Double Jeopardy

This week on Ice is Slippery, we're inventing a whole new branch of hockey law. Kate gives her firsthand account of game one between the Stars and the Avalanche, and we break down our predictions for which NHL teams will survive the first round of playoffs.

  44. -43

    Playing Hockey While Large

This week on Ice is Slippery, the Colorado Avalanche have written a compelling hockey narrative with the return of Gabe Landeskog and Kate has concerns for her beloved Dallas Stars. Fred? He's just nodding and smiling. We're also sending some non-playoff teams to summer camp for a little enrichment. Why do the Boston Bruins need music therapy camp? Listen to find out!

  45. -44

    Biscuit Week

This week on Ice is Slippery, we watched hockey history as Alexander Ovechkin broke Wayne Gretzky's goal scoring record. The Dallas Stars are ADHD icons, but they're starting to reaching the finding out portion of FAFO. Also, we cast NHL players as highly-specific Great British Baking Show contestant archetypes.

  46. -45

    Calamity Rantanen

In this episode, we unpack our feelings on the Torts firing. Fred is cranky, while Kate is in her usual state of no facts, all vibes. The Flyers are in their hot girl era, the Dallas Stars look great on paper, and there are so many trains.

  47. -46

    So Many Booshes

This week on Ice is Slippery, Kate knows a lot of words and Fred has an old lady vocabulary. Kate celebrates our lord and savior Thomas Harley, while Fred is pretty sure that Seth Jarvis is fixing his blood pressure. Also, is it just us, or do NHL refs have main character syndrome?

  48. -47

    Murder Baby

On this very special episode of Ice is Slippery, Fred and Kate give you an up close look at the Stars and Avalanche game. Kate's also still recovering from her up close look at a hockey butt. It's absolute chaos in the best way.

  49. -48

    Dollar Store Hockey Player

This week on Ice is Slippery, Kate and Fred talk through the ups and downs of the trade deadline. We welcome a surprise superstar and say goodbye to some old friends. We also break down how the Stars played this week. And the Flyers were also there!

  50. -49

    Big Little Guy

This week on Ice is Slippery, Fred has his first experience as a bloodthirsty hockey fan and goes all in on Matthews memes. Meanwhile, Kate's looking through the couch cushions to find an extra defenseman for the injury-riddled Dallas Stars.
