Transcript: [Jim Jachetta] (0:05 - 0:27) VidOvation is a systems integrator and value-added reseller, design consulting firm, and boutique rental house. We service broadcast, sports, and news and work with large and small production companies. We also do some work in the enterprise space for audio-visual, corporate audio-visual, and enterprise audio-visual. [Larry Jordan] (0:28 - 0:32) What's a typical production studio request? What kind of work would you do? [Jim Jachetta] (0:32 - 1:33) There’s a lot of industry has jargon, right? You know, three-letter, four-letter, and acronyms. We do a lot with at-home production. Some people call it REMI. Basically, it's live production done in the field. But even before COVID, we wanted to minimize personnel in the field, minimize having a truck or a van in the field or 50 employees in the field which are needed for bigger events. We do it at home. We bring the video feeds back home or to the cloud so we can have fewer personnel or personnel operating from home. So during COVID, at-home production, before COVID, it meant at home, my home base, my studio. Now, post-COVID, home is your home home. I'm not going to the office. I'm not going to the studio. I'm doing it from my couch at home. And a lot of our technology has helped facilitate just that. [Larry Jordan] (1:34 - 1:35) What have you got that's new at NAB this year? [Jim Jachetta] (1:36 - 2:07) So at NAB, we have several products that specialize in streaming video from the camera to the master control or a lot of people's master control now is virtualized, or your production hub if you're a smaller operation. We're switching cameras. We're adding special effects in the cloud now. Operators work from home or in the studio, producing products of all different sizes. So we're always coming up with new technologies along that line. [Larry Jordan] (2:08 - 2:11) Give me a sample use case, a practical example. [Jim Jachetta] (2:11 - 3:23) Yeah, a use case. So, we work with, believe it or not, we work with four different bass fishing tournaments. Bass Masters is one of them, Major League Fishing. Anglers, amateur anglers, like to watch professional anglers catch fish live on TV. Believe it or not, some of it makes it onto ESPN2. And there are weird rules, like you can catch a fish by the mouth with a hook, but the fish can't hit the deck of the boat; you get a penalty. So, I've learned about angling tournaments. So how do you get live video from a boat in the middle of a river, in the middle of a lake, in the middle of the woods, in the middle of nowhere? You can't bring a satellite truck or satellite link. We have a bonded cellular, a cellular unit connected to the camera, going over the cellular network and bringing it back to the cloud. And then in the case of Major League Fishing, it's just streamed to the web, you know, and then every hour they run a Bass Masters boating commercial. You know, that's how they monetize it, you know, all on the web. [Larry Jordan] (3:25 - 3:45) There's a lot of themes at NAB, the creator economy and AI. With the kind of work that you're doing, the thing that I'm most interested in, though, is you're trying to figure out where the future is going. And the future is pretty shifting around these days because you've got to develop products for it. What trends are you following that we need to pay attention to? [Jim Jachetta] (3:47 - 5:09) So I'm sure all of your listeners and followers, your viewers have 5G, 5G. Well, what does 5G mean to me or what does it mean to innovation and our customers? So I mentioned bonded cellular streaming from the bass fishing boat. Well, if you're in a 5G dead spot, how do we get the signal out? So one of the solutions to that problem where we've partnered with a couple of different vendors, we're rolling out what we call private 5G, where you set up your own private 5G network. Now, your smaller production company listener might, wow, I could never afford that. It's not that expensive. It's analogous to Wi-Fi on steroids. It's Wi-Fi on its own private channel. We have Wi-Fi running around this hall. I have one. He's got one. The venue has Wi-Fi. Wi-Fi is terrible in here. So this is a prime example. We have a private 5G radio lit up in our booth and we have a solid signal. But we own that little piece of spectrum. So that's how we're helping the industry stream over cellular better by integrating a private 5G connectivity into our bonded cellular solution. [Larry Jordan] (5:09 - 5:16) For people that haven't heard of innovation or haven't used your products, what's the important point you want them to remember? [Jim Jachetta] (5:17 - 6:08) Well, that's a great question. We're very hands-on with our customers. You know, we don't... Some vendors were like, you know, we're just transactional. We're selling a widget. From the beginning, when you engage with us, we ask a lot of questions. Now, if you're a customer that doesn't like a lot of questions, maybe it's not a match. But we ask a lot of questions. Tell us about your workflow. How many cameras are you going to use? What kind of environment do you have? Is cellular available? We were asked to do an event in the middle of Yellowstone Park. Not a lot of cellular. So satellite really was the only choice. So we asked these questions. We like to think of them not so much as customers, but partners. We want to partner with our customer. We want to help them succeed. So working with innovation, become part of the family. Our main story is talking about how a company has come up with a way to use streaming technology at the consumer level to provide world-class streaming live video with bonded cellular technology while on a trip, through tunnels, in the mountains, or anywhere that you'd have seclusion that you wouldn't be able to necessarily get your Internet traffic. Nathan Mumm: ... as Jim is joining us. He's the Executive Vice President and CTO of VidOvation. So Jim Jachetta, thank you very much for joining the show today. Speaker 1: This is a segment we call Ask the Experts. Nathan Mumm: All right. As Jim comes on up, Jim, last time we talked, we geeked out on a few items, but today I want to talk about your technology solutions, streamlining in hard-to-reach places. People are always streaming for work, for pleasure, especially across the globe now with our remote work environment that we have. You need to have streaming services everywhere. If you're out in the middle of a mountain hike, you'd never know when you may have that Zoom call- Mike: Yeah, you need to pull on over and to pull off the trail and do a Zoom call. Nathan Mumm: That's right, okay, but what's really interesting is that Jim has some solutions that are out-of-the-box broadcast, professional-grade, and even to the high-end of major motion industrial. So Jim, welcome to the show. Jim Jachetta: Hey guys, how're you doing? Glad to be here. Nathan Mumm: Good, good, good. Mike: Hi Jim. Nathan Mumm: Jim, all right. Please explain to me first, some of the clients that you interact with your business. Let's give a rundown. Jim Jachetta: Yeah. Nathan Mumm: Who are your clients? Jim Jachetta: Yeah, our clients tend to be television stations, sports leagues. We're working with the PGA. We need to transmit live from golf courses in rural areas. We might do a bicycle race that goes out into the middle of a desert. We are doing quite a few, believe it or not, fishing tournaments. Nathan Mumm: Okay. Jim Jachetta: Some of these fishing tournaments end up on ESPN live, so it's hard to broadcast live from the middle of a lake where there's no... satellite is just not an option. Nathan Mumm: Yeah, I can vouch for that. Mike: Yeah. Nathan Mumm: Can you vouch for that? Mike: Yeah. Nathan Mumm: I can tell you the one thing about fishing is that when I go fishing I catch nothing, so forget Internet. I can't even catch the fish in the boat, so- Mike: Well, you're going for the wrong reason. Nathan Mumm: That's right, okay. All right. So Jim- Jim Jachetta: It's all about the drinking, right? Nathan Mumm: That's right. Well- Mike: That's right. Nathan Mumm: ... if you have a nice whiskey out on the boat, then everything goes easier. Mike: You're catching something, it's just not a fish. Nathan Mumm: That's right. Okay Jim, explain what is your core business, okay. Your core business, what do you do? You're an AV company, but for the standard everyday listener that's listening to our show, what's your core business that you specialize in? Jim Jachetta: Well, our technology may touch the consumer, but we are really working more with a corporation or the enterprise, or from a consumer level maybe an executive wants to do a webinar from home or have a town hall meeting but wants a broadcast quality camera instead of a web camera. Then our technology would come into place, and fundamentally what we do is, the magic sauce or the magic bullet is we use cellular technology, and we don't just use one cellular connection, we'll use as many as eight cellular connections, and those eight connections, some of them might be on Verizon, some might be on AT&T, some on T-Mobile, or a mixture of all three, depending upon where you are. Jim Jachetta: We use the term bonded cellular. It's actually an IT term, bonding several connections together, and probably in the past you would bond several T1 connections together to make a DS3 connection, a bigger pipe, so we bond or take smaller cellular pipes and bond them into one big pipe so we can stream video reliably from these remote locations. Nathan Mumm: Okay. Explain that. Let's talk about that. Bonded cellular. So are you saying that you take a carrier with a 5G SIM card and you put it on top of another SIM card? Explain to me what your bonded cellular, or the Haivision IP is what you call it I think, is a area... Explain- Jim Jachetta: That's one of our partners, Haivision. Nathan Mumm: Okay. Okay, explain that to us. Jim Jachetta: Your audience is pretty technical. We take an encoder and we encode the video, relatively traditional methodology of encoding video. There's a lot of encoders, inexpensive high-end encoders, but the real magic is taking that stream of packets. We encode it into a bunch of IP packets, then you send those packets across the Internet, or in this case across the cellular network. The packets get all out of order. Some arrive early, some arrive late. Then we take those packets and we spread them across the eight connections, the eight cellular connection, so some packets go on modem number one, some go on two, some three, four, five, six, seven, and the real magic happens on the receiving side to take those eight streams, put them back together, and for video, the packets need to be in order. Jim Jachetta: Even this web session today, if the packets were out of sequence, you wouldn't be able to see or hear me right now. That's the real magic, breaking everything apart, sending it over these eight connections, and then putting it all back together on the receiving side, that's really magic. Jim Jachetta: We use forward error correction, automatic re-requests. There's a lot of... everything is dynamic and automatic. The bit rate will go up and down based on the quality of your connection. If we have a 10 megabit connection, we'll use it. If that suddenly drops, we adapt to it. The technology is very adaptable to Internet and cellular and network conditions. Nathan Mumm: Okay, so if I'm out in the middle of a boat, you talked about the fishing tournament, right, and so as I move further and further away from a cellular tower, probably the signal strength is going to be less and less and less, so does that mean the video quality is a little less high definition? Does it put those little filters in where you start seeing the bitmaps of everything that's going on? What happens when you're further away with that technology that's there? Jim Jachetta: Well, in television... I think we all learn this from satellite. Remember when CNN got a very low bit rate video feed from the rooftop in Baghdad, the first Gulf War? That proved that even a low resolution video is better than no video. Jim Jachetta: Some of our competitors take the approach where they do constant bit rate. They'll run at a high bit rate, but then it drops out. Then it freezes. We will scale the image. We will shrink the image and then scale it back up. Yes, you might lose some fidelity, but a little bit loss of fidelity or a little bit of the resolution, as we call, the picture gets a little bit soft. A little bit softness in the picture is better than no picture. Jim Jachetta: And of course we give priority to the audio. The human eye is more forgiving to a loss in visual fidelity or video fidelity than audio. Any kind of clicks or pops, the human ear doesn't forgive that. It's a delicate dance and it's all automatic, but you're right, Nathan, that if the bass fishing boat goes to a corner of the lake where there's not as much cellular connectivity, the unit may actually switch cellular carrier automatically. It was in the middle of the lake, maybe the modems were grabbing Verizon, then it moves to a corner of the lake, now it's out of the range of Verizon, our system will automatically grab T-Mobile or AT&T, and it will do everything it can to grab a signal. Jim Jachetta: There are areas where there is no signal, so we're not magicians. We can't fabricate a cellular signal where there isn't one, but there's techniques for that too, where we'll record the video while we're in that dead spot of the lake and then play it back when the boat comes back into range, so there are workflow ways around... Signal Transport: IP, 5G, RF, and Bonded Cellular There are more options than ever for getting a signal from point A to point B (and even C, D, and E) and transport technologies continue to evolve rapidly. Signal transport service and technology providers discuss some of the latest developments that can make a difference to your production. How are you all doing? How are you holding up? Janel Fleming (00:04): Good. Peter Larsson (00:05): We're good. Ken Kerschbaumer (00:05): Okay. I think it's day 654 of the COVID pandemic. It says we laugh now until comes that way, the three months, five months. Anyway, good to see you all. Our goal here is to talk about some of the trends in transport technologies. Peter, I'm going to start with you because you are a hall of fame when it comes to transport technologies with the work you've done with wireless cameras over the years. And I want to kind of start with you as far as an overview of RF and then what you see some of the challenges, because obviously the spectrum situation, not getting any better out there. So kind of give us an update on where things stand right now. Peter Larsson (00:43): Well, the way I've always looked at the RF environment that we work in that there are effectively three different levels. There is a single RF camera that can be used for a new story or a sporting event. Then there could be two or three cameras. And then you get to some of the bigger car races or golf where you have 40 systems. And they both take different technologies. A lot of the LiveU or the bonded cellular systems are incredible for the single-camera situations specifically for news and somehow the sporting events. It's when we start getting up into those 40 plus cameras for the golf and car racing, and then we start running into issues. And unfortunately, although we think our marketplace is the most important one, and the world and the biggest one in the world is actually the cell phone systems that dwarf us. Peter Larsson (01:40): They have all the money in and they're coming in and buying up all the spectrum. So, as we try to find more spectrum to do what we need to do, we're finding that we have to go higher and higher and higher in spectrum. And one of the issues with that is that now, where you might've gotten away with one or two receive sites if you're down in the lower spectrum, as you get high, you have to put more and more receive sites out there. So, the available money is going down, but the cost of operating is going up. And that is about the biggest issue we face at the moment. One of the bigger ones also is for wireless microphones. With the repacking of the TV stations, a lot of the UHF spectrum is going away. I know the SVG is working with the FCC as well to try and come up with solutions. But again, we are a small little player in that marketplace as opposed to the cell phone companies. Ken Kerschbaumer (02:41): Yeah. Yeah, I know that there have been some recent filings from Shure and Sennheiser on the wireless microphone funds and we will be getting involved with those to helping support that as best we can. Peter Larsson (02:51): It's all good. Ken Kerschbaumer (02:53): So then what's the long-term implication? It is going to just get more complicated and more difficult? Is there a bigger threat here at all, potentially longterm? Peter Larsson (03:03): There are ways out of it but they all cost money, which is the problem. So, yeah, as the technology is becoming more important or as digital technology is maturing, everyone is going after minimal cell systems, multiple outputs, which allows the signal to be two way. The encoders are becoming more efficient with better quality and creditors. And that's reducing the bandwidth of the video that you require. So there are ways out, but as you've heard it described, nothing happens all of a sudden. So, it's just a very slow transition. And then we fall off the cliff and there's a brand new technology comes out there which will help everything move along. Ken Kerschbaumer (03:51): Right, right. Excellent. So, Janel, I wanted to bring you in here to discuss the Super Bowl. And Peter mentioned some of the smaller systems and the role for these smaller demands. And obviously I think the LU800 is stepping in there, right? With multi input needs. So, can you talk through some of the workloads we saw at the Super Bowl and then maybe sending in some other events in the spring in Florida potentially? Janel Fleming (04:15): Mm-hmm (affirmative), yeah. So, we're seeing obviously a large demand for REMI production because having the need to have reduced people on staff is increasing the need to do more stuff from a central location. So, we've deployed the LU800 late last year. We had this in development before COVID hit. So we were sort of thinking about that in terms of customers are going into venues that are camera wired into an IO panel. And this is sort of a easy solution to just roll up with a few encoders and be able to produce a game remotely. So, the Super Bowl, we had a ton of use cases, obviously not the game itself, but all of the stuff leading up to the game and throughout the weekend, where they couldn't roll their traditional production truck. They had limited personnel that were allowed to travel because they had to quarantine two weeks prior to that. Janel Fleming (05:05): And that displaced a lot of key people who do other things in their network. So between Fox Sports, Fox Deportes, they did REMI productions of shows on site. CBS Sports interactive exclusively used LiveU for all of their digital programming throughout the weekend. And we saw the LU800 used in one location more than we've seen it anywhere else. So, it was a great sort of us a rewarding thing to see that. We knew these this need would be huge and a multi input single device unit, especially having bonded cellular because connectivity was very much questionable. Where are you going to get located? Where do you do your studio show? So sort of the confidence that the network is there when they rolled up. So, it was very exciting. And then, of course, we've got some big news come spring training. As many people know, we have done a lot for baseball throughout the season, but spring training is going to be really exciting for us this year, because we're going to be used more than we've ever been used in the past. So- Ken Kerschbaumer (06:07): Excellent. Janel Fleming (06:08): ... more to come. Ken Kerschbaumer (06:09): Great. That's great. So, Jim, I want to bring you in here as far as at home productions obviously, they've grown in popularity, no doubt over the last year or two. And there are issues when it comes to things like free [inaudible 00:06:23] or gen lock, lip-sync, especially because these productions are getting more complex. So, can you discuss that for a little bit? And then also for Peter and Janel, if you want to chime in as well, but Jim, from your perspective. At-home Production Multi-Venue Jim Jachetta (06:33): Yeah, I mean to Peter's point that bonded cellular, and I'm sure Janel would agree, in the early days, the technology was really meant for news, a single camera, either news talent, and a cameraman, or sometimes the talent was the camera operator. We've come a long way from that. And to Janel's point, bonded cellular now is really working really well for multi-camera at-home production, REMI production. We do have devices that have multiple inputs, up to four cameras in one appliance. But where our customers are using our technology is camera mounted units that is all over the field. They could be all over the golf course, the PGA, the golf channel, NBC are using our tech. And the cameras are not tethered to a single box. The field encoder mounts on the camera. Jim Jachetta (07:33): And we're able to maintain frame-accurate genlock on mobile, portable cameras similar to an RF workflow that BSI would employ. Or some of our customers are using a hybrid approach. They might use BSI for the RF to the truck, switch the show in the truck and then use bonded cellular out of the truck. But we've been promoting for more than five years even before COVID the idea of fully portable, fully autonomous portable cameras. We're able to do frame accurate gen lock. So, the PGA will deploy on some events up to 12 cameras and we can keep them all in perfect gen lock. They could have 30 microphones open at the same time. And if they were out of sync with each other, the show would be horrible. In a live event, as we all know, you can't fix timing issues in post production because there is no post-production. So, VidOvation and our partner, Haivision, it's the safe streams transport protocol that we do a form of precision timing protocol over an unmanaged network to keep all the field encoders in sync, to keep all that camera's in sync. Eliminate or reduce the need for Multiple Production Trucks Jim Jachetta (08:53): And, Peter said 40 cameras, we have one customer that deploys 50 cameras. Now, they're not all in the same location. So, frame accuracy becomes less important if you're in different venues, different cities. But within a given venue, there could be dozens of cameras all shooting the same scene and dozens of 30 or 40, 60, 100 microphones all on the same event. And they all have to be imperfect genlock. And we help our customers achieve that. Ken Kerschbaumer (09:26): That's so great. Peter, Janel,...

At-Home Production (REMI) using Cellular & the Public Internet Maintain Frame-accurate Genlock and Lip Sync across Multiple Handheld Cameras for Your Live Remote Production Ken Kerschbaumer (00:05): Hi everyone. And welcome to our first panel discussion of the day. Obviously our goal with this event is talking about remote production. But we want to take a little bit of a different angle to talk more about what life is like for people at home. And then recommendations for people who are working in new ways the last seven months. So it's great to be joined by Jim Jachetta, who is VidOvation CTO and cofounder. Jim, how are you? Jim Jachetta (00:24): Good. How are you, Ken? Thanks for having us. Ken Kerschbaumer (00:27): Glad to have you. And James Japhet from Hawk-Eye North America, managing director. How are you, James? James Japhet (00:32): I'm pretty well, Ken. Yourself? Ken Kerschbaumer (00:33): I'm doing all right. So we must start with James, you are in the Appalachians, I believe. Which I'm amazed you have even a wifi and connectivity down there. It's great. James Japhet (00:43): Yeah, it's a plus. Yeah, no, it's a welcome change from the city. So yeah, no complaints from my end. Ken Kerschbaumer (00:51): Yeah, sure. And I guess that gets to one of the key challenges we want to talk about today, which is, people are working from new places, right? And places where you maybe wouldn't think you would be able to do a video production. So from your standpoint, because I know Hawk-Eye, Josh was on the previous panel discussion discussing his working from home. So give us a sense of what the last seven months meant for Hawk-Eye. Because I know you guys have been key for a lot of the PGA golf events. What's it been like for you and your team as far as this new normal, if you will? James Japhet (01:20): Yeah. I mean, the first half it was very quiet and the second half has been pretty busy. It's been an interesting time. I mean, it actually threatened to tip just before COVID hit with the work we were doing with the PGA players, with their every shot live project. But it's been interesting. We've taken a very different approach to most with regards to remote production and the replay side of it, choosing to leave all of the high res actually on site and simply almost creating a portal into that. So yeah, we're very low bandwidth. As a solution which, as you say, even in the Appalachians I've got half a chance. Ken Kerschbaumer (02:04): Right, right, right. Well actually, I do want to start with the players. Because that was, without a doubt, I got to watch about what five hours, six hours of the cool every shot, every whole live. Give me a walk through it real quick, because your operators were based in the UK. So maybe that's a perfect example of this new workflow in terms of, how was that accomplished? How many people, is it 20, 18, 22 operators? How many were in UK? I'm quizzing you now. James Japhet (02:32): Yeah. Close. We had 28 actually. But yeah, effectively we had all our servers onsite in Florida capturing every single angle on the course. So 120 plus angles coming into the system. And effectively we are producing 25 concurrent streams, one for every group that was on the course. It actually crept up to 27 or 28 at one point, just because of a bit of slow play. But yeah, effectively we were curating a stream for [inaudible 00:03:04] groups. So cutting graphics, TrackMan integration for the PGA's nonlinear broadcasters around the globe. Ken Kerschbaumer (03:14): Yeah. It was amazing. It was really good. I wish we had the whole tournament obviously, because- James Japhet (03:19): So do we. We learned to model lessons on day one. Ken Kerschbaumer (03:22): Don't say anything, right? James Japhet (03:23): Well, I mean, we were very much looking forward to day two, come the end of day one. But yeah, we thought we were going to sneak in when the PGA hadn't called it off at the end of the day.But- Ken Kerschbaumer (03:36): I was gutted, at you like to say. Gutted, is that the expression? James Japhet (03:39): Yep, gutted. This is indeed the phrase. Yeah, very good. Ken Kerschbaumer (03:42): Right. So Jim, from your standpoint, what's the last seven months... You guys had some interesting golf also. I guess when golf [crosstalk 00:03:47]- Jim Jachetta (03:47): Yeah. Yeah. We thank God every day that we've been busy pretty consistently since COVID started. We are working maybe with different clients in different ways. We had done a couple of tournaments with the PGA, a tournament in the Caribbean, some other tournament's with them experimenting. Can we do at home production or a REMI production over an unmanaged network like cellular? And one of the big challenges in doing any kind of a REMI production at home. I'm sure James, it's important to him as well. Is maintaining Gen-Lock and audio lip sync. Bonded cellular was really meant for a single camera going to the courthouse steps to interview someone. Sometimes there was a camera operator, sometimes not. They'd put a tripod. The operator is their own camera person. Jim Jachetta (04:53): So really wasn't meant for multi-camera. So VidOvation, with our partner Haivision, we've fallen at this sweet spot now going on the better part of five years. Doing as many as 50 cameras, all maintaining a synchronous frame accurate Gen-Lock, audio lip sync. And it started with this crazy live TV show with Big Fish Entertainment. And even though it's a reality TV show, a lot of the workflow, a lot of the tech is like live sports. They dump all the raw video into an EVS. They play it back to the director. The director picks their shots. So there is up to a 15 minute delay in that production. And then with the PGA, they tried it out, had a couple of early events that were successful. And then in April, May, there was the first golf event that came back, the Skins event. Jim Jachetta (05:58): They did it at a private club where there was no fiber, the switch level three, no one had a connection into that venue. Only alternative maybe would have been satellite. So the PGA trusted us, we came in, we provided them the eight modem pro 380 bonded cellular. They mount on the camera, so the operators can move around. There are some systems that will do multi-channel, but they have to be tethered, there's cables. So they had two photogs in the T box, two photogs on the fairway, and then two on the green. And they kind of rotate as groups come through. Jim Jachetta (06:47): And then a big requirement is handling analog audio. Now some cameras have analog audio inputs on the camera, but if you're using a smaller camera, that's not necessarily the case. You're stuck with the internal microphones of the camera. I think of myself more of a video guy than an audio guy, but there is anywhere from four times to eight times more audio for every video. There's never enough audio channels. So each of our field encoders does four today, it's on the roadmap to do eight. I think customers would like 32 channels of audio. But we have a way around that. I learned about the top trace, to draw the red line. This may compete with you, James. But- James Japhet (07:48): No, no, no. You go right ahead. Jim Jachetta (07:49): We all know how Hawk-Eye has revolutionized tennis. If we only had it when McEnroe was around, there would have been less tantrums. But the top trace, tracing the ball. I didn't know this, that telemetry is actually sent to the graphical equipment back in master control via an audio channel. So having analog audio available on the camera made the top trace very viable. And then PGA, they have operators with parabolic mics getting distance shots, following the crowd. They had lapel microphones on the talent. There were commentators walking in the course with the players. And for audio only, they used the small pro 320. It has two modems. We just put them on their internal video test signal, ran it at a lower bit rate, and then use the analog audio inputs. So the commentator following the talent, his microphone will go into analog audio one. Jim Jachetta (09:04): Then he'd have a LOV receiver to one of the players he's near going into audio two. And then for diversity, there might be another LOV receiver on another camera, just in case cameras drift away. So you can have redundancy in your audio paths. And so in the case of PGA, there were seven or eight. No, there were nine camera feeds simultaneous, some tight, some wide. And then dozens of microphones open all at the same time. You can imagine the audio guy would go crazy. They tee off a bit, whoosh, whoosh, whoosh, you get all this echo. And with a live show, you can't fix this in post. So you really have to have it frame accurate, perfect Gen-Lock. So that's really a piece that you need, is that frame accurate Gen-Lock. Ken Kerschbaumer (09:59): Right. Right, right. Yeah. So James, is that an issue? I mean, lip sync, as far as you're still, let's take the PGA, because you guys have been a part of almost every tournament, right? I think that happens. James Japhet (10:09): We have. Yep. So far yeah. Ken Kerschbaumer (10:11): Walk us through where you fit into those regular productions, if you will. And also, well the championships too, right? The Master. Sorry, not the Masters [crosstalk 00:10:20] Championship, the US Open. James Japhet (10:22): Masters is coming up next month. Yeah, we'll be a part of that as well. But yeah, I mean, just going back to the lip sync. We saw that as an issue, or a potential issue for us. So we actually, again, by leaving everything we had onsite and only offering a portal for the operator into those machines, we actually avoided that being a problem for us on the golf. I'm Jim Jachetta, CTO and Co-founder of VidOvation. Today we have my good friend, Matt Hughes from V-Nova. He's Senior VP of Global Sales. Give us a little overview Matt of what knowledge you're going to lay on us today. Matt Hughes (00:23): Yeah. Thanks, Jim. And thanks for VidOvation for setting this up, and it's important for us to have a chance to talk with you guys about V-Nova. We're a UK London-based company, in the process of expanding as well. What we do is we're a compression technology company. We own a bunch of patents around video compression and image compression. What we've done is, we've taken our library and perfected them to various aspects of the broadcast industry. We've got a few ways that we've worked, what I'm going to go through today, is show you some of those new technologies that are being advanced through MPEG and SMPTE, and also products that we have that offers encoding and decoding a server based system that we have in the market. Jim Jachetta (01:17): Well, some of your technology you're going to present Matt is kind of a new approach or a contrarian approach so I put together this little questionnaire to kind of see where customers are at. Everyone should be able to see. We asked the question, what video codec or codecs do you use today and this is a multiple choice. It's multiple choice but you can also pick multiple things. So if you use uncompressed and JPEG 2000, we'd love to hear from you, just kind of see where you folks are at today in your IP video codec uses right now. Jim Jachetta (02:03): So it looks like, Oh, wow. It's pretty evenly distributed here. Looks like even except for JPEG XS. So here, let me put this up. Oh, what did I do? Ah. I hit the wrong button. Hold on, hold on. Close it. Now I share, there we go. So there's the results. I guess that's not surprising. A lot of people are still using H.264. I don't want to spoil the surprise but I think Matt might have some enhancements to make 264, take something legacy like that and improve it. We got 265 and uncompressed and then the JPEG 2000 folks. Matt is going to present maybe some alternatives to that. So here if I hide that. Thank you folks for sharing. Let me see. You should have control again, Matt. Matt Hughes (03:06): Okay. Alright. Thanks Jim. Some of the technologies that we've been working on specifically have been for MPEG and SMPTE. We've got a new standard that's part of MPEG-5. MPEG-5 is actually a suite of products and part of that suite is called MPEG-5 Part 2 with LCEVC. And with SMPTE, new standard is VC-6 or SMPTE ST 2117. I'm going to go through both of these and kind of explain where we are today with these two technologies. One of the things that's majorly happening and you guys see this everyday is, in your typical home, you've got people watching, people on Zoom, people on GoToMeeting, Netflix is running, Prime is running, Twitch, YouTube, somebody is on a bicycle doing Peloton. You've got a lot of streaming, well, I'm not, but some people are. Matt Hughes (04:04): You've got a lot of streaming services happening inside the home. 65% of the worldwide mobile downstream traffic is video and 11% is Netflix. I mean, it just kind of gives you an idea, where does that lie? It's going through a massive strain right now, the internet. So, how do we make that better? In the US, it's Netflix, which is at the top in Europe. In the Middle East and Africa, you've got YouTube. In Asia, you've got media streamers. All these are taking up all the bandwidth along everywhere in the world. Viewers expect that high quality. So no matter what service you're on, you still want to be able to see your video. You don't want to see a spinning wheel. All the devices, everything that's being used, you want to have a good experience, a good quality of experience. So high demand, good experience, which means... typically in the past, it meant using a lot of bandwidth. How do we cut that? How do we make that bandwidth smaller? And what can we do to offer our customers or the general public consumers a better experience? Matt Hughes (05:23): Low-latency is also critical. You want to be able to have real-time video. You don't want to wait, the gap structure way of working can take a lot of time away, making more latency within the workflow. How do you remove that? How do you make it, so you don't have to have a massive gap structure with your streaming services. How does that work? Our solution is LCEVC and of course, right now I've got a helicopter going over my house, it's not my helicopter. Jim Jachetta (05:57): We can't hear it. Matt Hughes (05:57): You guys will hear it soon because it's [inaudible 00:06:01]. Anyway, it's London. Can you hear it in the background or still pretty good? Jim Jachetta (06:07): Still pretty good. Matt Hughes (06:10): That's impressive because it's really low. Jim Jachetta (06:12): Oh, there you go. Now I hear it. Matt Hughes (06:14): [inaudible 00:06:14]. This always happens. LCEVC is Low Complexity Enhancement Video Coding, which means we're taking a base codec, so the existing code that you already have like H.264 or could be HEVC or could be AV1 and we're enhancing that. Making the enhancement on top of that existing codec, we start with a base codec which is really important for this technology. That's how we differentiate from other players out there. In MPEG-5, the suite of MPEG-5 products is, this was important for that suite, because we didn't want to make a new codec and MPEG didn't want to have a new product, another new codec out in the market. So what can we do with existing technology and new technology that comes or how can we make that better? Jim Jachetta (07:10): Basically we could take that legacy AVC/H.264 and give it new life, supercharge it as it were, without having to throw out that investment of H.264 infrastructure? Matt Hughes (07:29): Yeah. If you put in a massive headend with encoders and you don't want to have to switch those out, because you need a larger encoding firm at your headend, you don't want to have to do that. You can keep what you've got existing today and then upgrade that workflow with this enhanced codec, which is really important. Jim Jachetta (07:50): Well, another thing that I like too is that not every subscriber... If it's like an OTT application, maybe some customers haven't updated their set-top box yet to support the new standard, they'll still get the base H.264, the secondary stream or the supplemental stream will just be discarded or ignored. Right? So it- Matt Hughes (08:12): Exactly. Jim Jachetta (08:14): ... it scales nicely. Matt Hughes (08:16): Yeah. If you've got the base codec and the base codec, let's say is doing your SD version of your channel, and then your HD and UHD are added with this MPEG, LCEVC, you would still have that base codec. So you still have a base H.264 that's been sent to your set-top box, the ones that haven't been upgraded or they weren't upgraded, or it could be somebody paying for prime content that's in HD or in UHD, however somebody wanted to work that. It's low complexity. This means it reduces those processing costs of encoding on the codec. It's a software plugin update, as you mentioned. So it's a software plugin, we're not changing the hardware. It is specifically software for players and existing devices. Jim Jachetta (09:09): The acronym again, it's Low Complexity... What does it stand for again? Matt Hughes (09:15): Enhance [inaudible 00:09:16] codec. Jim Jachetta (09:19): Yeah. Your audio is dropping out a little bit. Low Complexity Enhanced Video Codec? Matt Hughes (09:24): Enhancing Video Coding. Coding. Jim Jachetta (09:27): Coding. Matt Hughes (09:27): Not a codec. Jim Jachetta (09:29): Not codec. Matt Hughes (09:29): We want to be sure. This isn't a codec. Jim Jachetta (09:31): It is not a codec because it can't stand on its own. Okay. So it's enhancing coding. Matt Hughes (09:38): Coding. Jim Jachetta (09:39): If the primary stream went away, this of course couldn't stand on its own or the base stream. Got it. Matt Hughes (09:46): Yeah. Solving this high quality streaming at scale. When you're scaling up, reduce the network traffic without changing the quality, delivering the highest quality and providing low-latency, those are keys. And the benefits for the viewers, for the consumer: killing that buffering wheel, delivering the highest quality and having a fast start-up time, for those adverts, for creating ad revenue, which is really important. For service providers, you want to be able to beat the competition, you want to be the one that's not waiting for this massive gap structure to happen for your breaking news to happen, or you want to be able to make sure your customers aren't turning,...

SVG SportsTech On Demand: VidOvation’s Jim Jachetta on Frame-Accurate Gen-Lock and Lip Sync in Remotely Produced Live Video

Our Brandon Costa sat down with Jim Jachetta, EVP and CTO, VidOvation, about the company’s efforts. VidOvation is busier than ever, helping set up their clients for success with tools fit for multi-camera at-home/REMI live video production over cellular and the Public Internet. VidOvation’s solutions and services offer assistance in maintaining frame-accurate gen-lock and lip-sync across multiple cameras when transporting over an unmanaged network. Transcript: Brandon Costa: On this edition of SVG SportsTech On Demand, we talk at-home production in this wild world of social distancing and coronavirus that we're in right now in the sports video production community. We are joined by Jim Jachetta. He is EVP and CTO of VidOvation. Jim, first off before we get started, hope you, your loved ones and your colleagues are doing well. How you holding up out there? Jim Jachetta: Yes, we're keeping safe. The majority of our staff is working at home. We have a small team in the office supporting the ongoing needs of customers during this change, or I guess not to be too cliché, the new normal. Brandon Costa: Mm-hmm (affirmative). Jim Jachetta: Right? Brandon Costa: Yup, for sure. Well, we kind of teased it a little bit at the top, at-home, REMI, home-run, whatever you want to call it. A trend in the industry that certainly had a lot of steam coming into 2020 on its own. Now, with so many people working remotely out of pure necessity, be it through cloud-based or IP-based workflows, really kind of fits into VidOvation’s wheelhouse, and something that you guys have been specializing in for some time. So how, and in what ways, has the company responded in how things have transformed over the past month? Jim Jachetta: Yeah. So, I mean, we've been championing at-home and REMI production for quite a few years now. Particularly over the more challenging unmanaged networks, such as cellular and public internet. And one of the particular challenges is, as we all know, cellular and public internet can be very unpredictable, dropping packets, changing latency, it's a very unpredictable connection. But VidOvation, and our partner Haivision, were able to maintain frame-accurate gen-lock and lip-sync. And if you're doing a multi-camera environment that's very important, so we've been talking about this for years. Now we find many of our customers have already implemented this technology. Now we're finding customers scrambling to implement our technology. So their graphics engineer, or their EVS operator, or their video engineer, or transmission engineer, can work from home. We've seen a trend before this, now it's just going to be worse, where we're all working. There's so much competition for the viewers' eyeballs, whether it's Netflix, YouTube, Hulu. Ad revenues are declining, production costs are increasing, and as you and Sports Video Group have been discussing for many years, the trend, or the benefits, of at-home or REMI production. Jim Jachetta: But, to kind of frame it around what's happening right now, one of the key benefits is reducing labor and travel costs. So, your production specialist, your knowledge worker, your operator who knows how to work that EVS. They work from home now, or they work at a centralized master control. They sleep in their own bed at night. So, I find that the most dangerous thing during corona now is doorknobs in public places. I don't look forward to flying anytime soon, being in that tin can with people sneezing on you, all that recirculated air. It reduces labor costs, travel costs, and also the same skilled worker can do more than one production in a day. They could do a game on the East coast in the morning, or early afternoon, and then in their evening do an afternoon game on the West coast. So, if they travel on site, they can only do one game at a time, or one event at a time. So, these are some of the benefits that we're seeing. Brandon Costa: Okay. What are a couple of the specific solutions that you guys at VidOvation are offering right now? Whether they be particularly new, or just really, really top of mind, a lot of people are asking for it right now in this new norm? Jim Jachetta: Well, as I mentioned, the Haivision technology is really good for an unmanaged network. If you're working over a managed network, we have solutions from V-Nova. And V-Nova is really an alternative to JPEG 2000. We've been using JPEG 2000... What? 20 plus years, something like that. 15 years. It's kind of the industry standard, mezzanine, high bit rate, high quality transport, but it can be very bandwidth-hungry. And V-Nova came out with a new codec, which was ratified recently by SMPTE. It's now the VC-6 or SMPTE ST-2117. And what it gives you is a higher quality version of JPEG 2000, or JPEG XS, or it's even competitive with compressed... I'm sorry, with uncompressed. I'm sorry. So, it's a very high quality. So if you're looking at 4K, or UHD, you get savings on the order of 70% in bandwidth, and with HD, about 25% of bandwidth. And in most applications, especially on a managed network, bandwidth costs money. So, if you can save 70%, or 25%, for most customers, that's pretty significant. Jim Jachetta: Good morning everyone. Jim Jachetta here from VidOvation. I'm the co-founder and CTO. Today we have a very special guest. My friend Jesse Foster from MultiDyne, he's the director of products in Western sales. He's going to lay some fiber optic knowledge on us, particularly how to use studio cameras in a multi-camera production environment, a live production environment, right, Jesse? Jesse Foster: Correct. That's right. Jim Jachetta: All right. So lay some knowledge on us. Jesse Foster: Okay. So thanks for joining everybody. So I am located in the Los Angeles area and report back to the MultiDyne headquarters in Hauppauge, Long Island, New York. And a little history on the company. We've been around since 1977 and over the years we've focused primarily on these markets and with these applications that are on the right hand side of the screen. For the sake of this presentation, we're going to be focused on these areas of venues and stadiums and live stage events, primarily with the studio signal extension side of things. And touch on what we can do with PTZ and POV operator lease cameras, if that's a real phrase. MultiDyne Video & Fiber Optic Systems Jesse Foster: Other areas of interest that you might see here, follow up with myself or Jim afterwards, we can get into what we do in the military space and streaming and so forth. One of the main through lines that you'll see through this presentation is our leveraging of the SMPTE fiber optic spec in the United States. It's this SMPTE 304M connector. You see it's an international standard. It's an international technology that's been standardized by multiple bodies, that I have listed here. The connector is then utilized with the SMPTE 311M spec of cable, which you can see on the right hand corner of the screen there. It is comprised of two single mode fibers, which means your bandwidth is theoretically, it's limitless to some degree. MultiDyne Company Overview Jesse Foster: There's also two power cables and two low voltage signal wires. So it's a all in one a connection that if you just imagined once you start seeing the breakout of signal IO that we can do on our products, what that would be traditionally in the copper sense, it would just be a very large loom of copper, that's very heavy and is very distance limited. So this technology is, it's streamlining and it enables workflows that are not achievable with copper. And in the cases where we don't have the SMPTE 311 cable, whether or not it's an older stadium or a studio facility, we have techniques to get the payload onto a single fiber optic tactical single mode cable, and inject power at the receive side, or at the camera side. SMPTE Fiber Optic Camera Systems - SMPTE 304M - SMPTE 311M Jesse Foster: So the message of we can turn any camera into a SMPTE camera, it really is applicable to any type of video source that you might have. It could be a VTR that we could hang on the end of our transmission system. So it's a throwback VTR server or something like that. So you'll see that we have a very not platform specific. We're very universal in our solution. So really you guys will probably find some applications that I don't mention here, and we'd be interested to talk to you about those as well. Jim Jachetta: Well, you were telling me yesterday, Jesse, when we were harassing that, that everything you do from the cable to the technology is very standard spaced. Jesse Foster: Correct. Jim Jachetta: And you'll get into that more. Jesse Foster: Correct. And that's how we can be everything to everybody in that sense. Primarily the cameras and the peripheral items in the industry are standards based, whether it's SMPTE or others. And we make sure that we are compliant with those standards. So we're plug and play and we don't introduce any proprietary [inaudible 00:04:42] or anything in this level of product. So to bring the SMPTE studio camera, the message full circle here, this about 20 years I believe since HDTV really was rolled out, that the SMPTE cable spec has been leveraged by the prime camera vendors. And I have that, the ones that we work with listed here. So it's really the who's who, the broadcast cameras traditionally here, Sony, Hitachi, Grass Valley, Panasonic and Ikegami. SMPTE Studio Camera Manufacturers - Sony, Hitachi, GV Grass Valley, Panasonic, Ikegami Jesse Foster: So we actually have product that augments these systems and like I mentioned gets you to the single mode workflow, and allows you to get away from the hybrid cabling where required. So like I mentioned, if there's a studio or a stadium, it doesn't have it, or if there's issues with the electromagnetic interference where the copper in the cable could induct some unwanted interference. That's another reason that, do you get away from the hybrid cabling? Jesse Foster: So to do that, we have a product line called the SMPTE-HUT. So it's a hybrid universal transceiver. On the left hand side is the base station unit. This plugs right onto the back of a CCU. So the studio SMPTE systems from Sony for example, are going to be comprised of two elements. You'll have the camera and you'll have a base station. The base station supplies the power and does all the transceiver thing of the video signals, the Intercom signals, everything. So you'll see that we have the equivalent of that system in our SilverBack line, which we'll get to. But when we're working with these traditional SMPTE systems, this is the type of product we use to get you to that single mode workflow. So the unit on the right is the camera power insertion unit and the unit on the left is the one that goes onto the base station. SMPTE-HUT Systems - Transmission Extenders for SMPTE-Based Camera Chains Jim Jachetta: So Jesse, you would use this tech if you don't have SMPTE conductivity throughout your facility. So it's getting, it's mapping the SMPTE conductivity to more traditional, more generic single mode fiber. Is that correct? Jesse Foster: Correct. Yeah. This is a single mode nine micron fiber, which is the same as that's in the SMPTE cable. But it's unrestrained, it doesn't have the copper around it, the jacketing and everything, but you can get them a tactical is the term. So tech 12 would indicate that it's a tactical fiber that's meant to be used in the field and can be run over by vehicles and it's meant to be resilient. And the 12, it would indicate that there's 12 fibers in it. So there's tech two, so really the number indicates how many fibers are in a given cable. This would be a tech two scenario that you see here. Jesse Foster: The signaling from the camera to the base station and back is bi-directional by nature. So this takes two fibers in this standard application. Another scenario where you'd want to get away from the hybrid fiber is distance limitations that are implied with the hybrid fiber. Nobody really makes really long SMPTE 311 cables. They make them long, but not as long as you do with the single mode fiber because just the weight and the cost and everything, like the reels would be too big, it's just not feasible. SMPTE HUT Applications Jim Jachetta: Well, yeah. Well, so I believe Jesse too the resistance of the copper cable then inhibits how much power you can push through it. Jesse Foster: Correct. That's right. Jim Jachetta: That's part of it as well, right? Yeah. Jesse Foster: Correct. Jim Jachetta: [inaudible 00:08:31]. Single mode, you could go 15, 20 kilometers, you're not going to make a 15 or 20 kilometers SMPTE cable. Jesse Foster: Right. Mostly based on just the cost and weight and everything and it's a waste. Because you're wasting all of the additional copper connectivity that's in there. You're going to utilize the two fibers. You might as well just do something like this with the system like this and go those 20 kilometers and get back to SMPTE at the camera and at the base. So that's what we're showing right here. And our SilverBack V data sheet, which we can send a link out to, it's on our website, has a chart that shows what type of power distance you should be able to expect based on a given type of [inaudible 00:09:11] cable. And it really does come down to the diameter of the copper power conductors that are in there, to your point. Jesse Foster: There's two workflows here. One is active at the camera side. We're actually injecting power depending on the type of cable you're using. We can go up to a kilometer to power the cameras. So down from there if you're using thinner gauge, SMPTE 311 fiber for example. And then the second scenario here is the camera's powered locally using like four pin XLR or traditional camera power. And we're doing this with a passive device and it's really just converting the two STs back into the SMPTE connection to make the connection to the camera. SMPTE HUT Features Jesse Foster: They're typically passive like I just referenced, but we can build these products.
