In 2024 shortly after the death of Mica Miller, IOI interviewed a leading expert on death by suicide. Many new facts were revealed after the interview was conducted. However; the insight from the expert is very useful. Dr. Julie Cerel who shares her extensive research into death by suicide.Dr. Cerel is a licensed clinical psychologist and Professor in the College of Social Work at the University of Kentucky. She is the director of the Suicide Prevention & Exposure Lab at the University of Kentucky and the Wilson Profession of Mental Health. Her research has focused on suicide exposure and bereavement, suicide attempt survivors and suicide prevention. She is a Past-President of the American Association of Suicidology. In 2023 she was elected a fellow of the American Psychology Association. She is the author of over 114 academic publications and co-author of Seeking Hope: Stories of the Suicide Bereaved. In February 2025, after brief deliberations, a Greenville County jury convicted Zachary Hughes of the October 2021 murder of Christina Parcell. Hughes was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole. Journalist Mandy Matney, who has closely covered the Beach v. Parker’s “outrage” lawsuit, became part of the legal battle when attorneys for Parker’s Corporation subpoenaed her for a deposition.Matney did not appear at the location specified in the subpoena, citing safety concerns that she raised shortly before the deposition was scheduled to begin. According to court filings and testimony, Matney believed the designated location was unsafe. The parties were unable to agree on an alternative location, resulting in the deposition not taking place.Following her failure to appear, Parker’s attorneys filed a motion to compel her deposition and later sought to have her held in contempt of court. The Supreme Court of South Carolina ruled that Alex Murdaugh is entitled to a new trial, citing improper influences on the jury. According to the court, Becky Hill's comments and actions compromised the integrity of the jury, violating Murdaugh’s right to a fair trial. The court emphasized that every defendant is entitled to an impartial jury, free from external influences.  The court found that Hill made statements to jurors that suggested Murdaugh was guilty.  While the court did not review every evidentiary issue raised by Murdaugh's appeal, it provided guidance on the admissibility of his financial crimes in the upcoming trial. South Carolina Attorney General Alan Wilson expressed disappointment but acknowledged the necessity of a fair trial. The next day Hawthorne would be arrested for murdering retired Rock Hill police lieutenant Larry Vaughn. Evan Hawthorne would eventually be sentenced to life in prison. In the fall of 2015 4 people were found murdered in a mobile home. The victims, all from the same family, were stabbed to death and then shot. The scene was brutal. Amy Vilardi, a member of the same family, made the 911 call alerting authorities to the crime. No arrests were made. Almost eight years later, Amy and Ross Vilardi were arrested for the murders. February 27, 2026, Amy Vilardi was found guilty of the murders and sentenced to four consecutive life sentences. Lori Murray was her defense attorney. The South Carolina Supreme Court has set a date to hear oral arguments in Alex Murdaugh's appeal of his murder convictions of his wife, Maggie, and son, Paul. Stephanie Tinsley created the true crime podcast, Everything They Missed. It is about the 2007 savage murder of Danny Harris in Memphis, a father of four, two of them Memphis police officers. Mr. Harris's body was left unnoticed and decomposing in his home for 2 months. The case was closed suspiciously and within 48 hours, police zeroed in on a 24-year-old black man, Andrew Hayes with a 3rd grade level IQ, who had never met the victim. In February, South Carolina US House of Representative, Nancy Mace gave a "scorched earth" speech on the house floor. In the speech she accused several men of serious crimes, including rape, physical abuse and sex trafficking. None of the men Mace accused have been charged with any of the crimes she accused them of and all have denied her allegations. In this episode we are going to talk with Stephen Frederico, the father of Logan Feredrico. Mr. Federico is battling to make sure career criminals are kept off the street in hopes to prevent more tragedies like the one that struck his family. Logan Federico, 22, of Waxhaw, North Carolina, was visiting friends in Columbia, South Carolina, on May 3 when a career criminal broke into the home where she was staying with friends. Police say the killer, identified as 30-year-old Alexander Dickey, murdered her with a stolen gun  Federico, a student at South Piedmont Community College, worked two jobs and had plans to transfer to the College of Charleston to pursue her dream of becoming a teacher.
