Inside the IDA with Nick Vacco
Words from Nick:My obsession for detailing started when I was 14. One summer afternoon in 1974 I detailed my mom's big Buick Electra. She took it to work the following day at the Real-estate company that she worked for, and her co workers asked her who made her car look like new. I then detailed all her coworkers' cars and always was the kid with money in his pocket - not because it was given to me, it's because I earned it at such a young age. I went to college after highschool as a communications major focusing on radio broadcasting. I had a great mentor here in Pittsburgh when growing up. He was a DJ at KQV radio "Geoff Christie." He took me under his wing and encouraged me to go to college and take up radio broadcasting. His real name years later was Rush Limbaugh and there is a back story with that. I opened my first licensed car detailing and aftermarket installation business in 1986; King Of The Road Auto Appearance Center. It was acquired in the late 1990's along with my limousine company Elite Coach Limousine which is the largest transportation company in Pittsburgh today. Upon the acquisition of those businesses I started DetailKIng.com an online auto detailing supply company that also offered business and hands-on training to entrepreneurs. In 2008 the Detail King Auto Detailing Training Institute was born and became a private licensed technical training school here in PA. Both businesses were acquired in 2020 and 2022 be 3 of my long-time and loyal employees I started 2 detailing businesses the last 6 years, one in San Clemente CA and one in the Pittsburgh PA area Detail King Express a detailing and ceramic coating shop along with The Detail Czar - a private training company for new detailing business start-ups. We have a licensee program. I also am an industry mentor and coach and help other detailing business owners scale their businesses. During my private training classes I do recommend that my trainees consider joining the IDA. (Note: I sold the shop in San Clemente 2 years ago but still mentor my business partner who acquired it). I will be teaching an auto detailing business and hands on course at one of the local colleges in the near future here in the Pittsburgh area. I enjoy helping others be successful and sharing all my knowledge that I have learned over the 41 years being in this great and lucrative industry. I have had some great mentors including Daymond John from Shark Tank. Thank you! Nick Vacco

Inside the IDA with Chris Bence
Host Keith Duplessie sits down with Chris Bence of Swerve Pro Detailing out of Anderson, South Carolina. Here are some notes from Chris himself:I launched Swerve Pro Detailing in September of 2024, operating from my home garage and doing mobile work. In May of 2025, I was able to find a great location for my first shop and this created a very fundamental and positive change for the business operations and performance. Prior to starting my venture into detailing, I spent over 25 years working as a business consultant and project manager, where my area of expertise was in business process optimization, technology, and change management. Much of the knowledge I acquired in that career has served me well as an entrepreneur, and I would like to share it with our amazing detailing community. My first 'real' exposure to detailing came when I was in college, when I worked part-time at a local auto body and fabrication shop to help with tuition costs. In that role, I logged hundreds of hours doing final vehicle prep and polishing. I learned a great deal about automotive paints and how to address certain issues like orange peel, nibs, runs, etc. Detailing is not my first business endeavor. With my wife Stacy leading the charge, we owned and operated a furniture, appliances, and electronics store which saw tremendous growth and success before circumstances forced us to begin looking at other options. I am a very proud member of the IDA, and can say with certainty that it has contributed to what we've achieved thus far, as well as personal growth and relationships with some great folks in our industry.
