Canada-Japan Security Relations: Expanding the Partnership to Address Rising Threats
This talk explores the evolving security relationship between Canada and Japan at a moment of heightened strategic competition in the Indo-Pacific. It examines how both countries are adapting their defence, economic security, and diplomatic strategies in response to shared challenges, including coercive state behaviour and disruptions to the rules-based order. Drawing on recent policy developments - from Canada’s Indo-Pacific Strategy to Japan’s historic shifts in defence posture - the talk highlights opportunities for deeper bilateral and multilateral cooperation. Ultimately, it considers how Canada and Japan can work together to enhance regional stability and shape a more resilient Indo-Pacific.
