Ep 6: The Death of Dermot MacMurrough: Strongbow's Claim, King Henry II & Laudabiliter
In this episode, the Norman Conquest of Ireland reaches a pivotal turning point. After reclaiming the Kingdom of Leinster and launching a vengeful campaign against his bitter rival, Tiernan O’Rourke, Dermot McMurrough’s ambitions for the High Kingship are cut short. We explore the dramatic final months of MacMurrough’s life, his controversial life ending at Ferns in 1171, and the "insufferable disease" described by the annals of the time. With the King of Leinster gone, the power vacuum changes everything. Strongbow finds himself transformed from a mercenary ally into a dangerous claimant to Irish lands, a move that puts him on a collision course with King Henry II. We also dive into the mystery of Laudabiliter: the controversial papal document that provided the legal and religious pretext for the English intervention in Ireland. Was it a genuine mandate from the only English Pope in history, or a convenient forgery? In this episode, we cover:The Meath Campaign: Why the formidable Norman cavalry struggled in the Irish woodlands. The "What Ifs" of History: How King Henry II’s revocation of permission nearly ended the invasion before it began. The Death of Dermot MacMurrough: Fact vs. folklore regarding his final days and his legacy in the Irish Annals.Laudabiliter & The Papacy: A deep dive into the document that justified a conquest.

Ep 5: The Norman Conquest of Leinster: The Battle of Baginbun, Sieges of Waterford & Dublin
This episode explores the pivotal opening chapter of the Norman invasion of Ireland. While the story of the conquest is often oversimplified as "Strongbow came and conquered," the actual history is far more specific and complex. We dive into the critical years of 1167–1170, a period defined by the High King Rory O’Connor’s missed opportunities to crush the invasion before it truly began.Twice, the High King had Dermot MacMurrough cornered—once when Dermot returned with only a handful of supporters, and again when his small force was trapped on a hill. Both times, O’Connor accepted an oath of allegiance rather than delivering a final blow.We also explore the Battle of Baginbun. Raymond le Gros, landed at Baginbun with just 80 men. Despite being outnumbered by a massive force of local Gaelic lords and Hiberno-Norse from Waterford, the Normans utilised ingenious tactics to survive. The victory at Baginbun secured a safe landing for Strongbow, who arrived weeks later to take the strategic hubs of Waterford and Dublin. However, his success came at a steep price; by seizing these territories, Strongbow defied King Henry II and essentially committed treason.Join us as we break down the military tactics, the political betrayals, and the "twists and turns" that ensured the Norman presence in Ireland was here to stay.Key Topics Covered:The Battle of Baginbun, Siege of Waterford and First Siege of Dublin 1170The role of Robert FitzStephen and Maurice Fitzgerald in the first wave. Why Rory O'Connor refused to take the field, leading his army to disband. The lasting impact of the "Battle of Baginbun" on Irish history. What do you think was the biggest turning point in this conflict? Ep 4- Diarmait Mac Murchada, Dearbhforgaill & the Road to Norman Invasion
In Episode 4, we begin the story of the Norman invasion of Ireland, moving from background and context into the key events that set everything in motion. This episode focuses on one of the most controversial figures in Irish history — Diarmait Mac Murchada, King of Leinster — and the decisions that would ultimately change Ireland forever. We examine the long-standing feud between Diarmait and Tighearnán Ua Ruairc of Breifne, including the disputed story of Dearbhforgaill — often described as an elopement, but more likely a kidnapping. This personal conflict, combined with wider political tensions, played a crucial role in the crisis that followed. The lesson also explores how Ruaidrí Ua Conchobair, High King of Ireland, moved against Diarmait, forcing him into exile. In response, Diarmait made a fateful decision: he sought help from the Normans. But this was more than just hiring mercenaries — by naming Strongbow (Richard de Clare) as his heir, Diarmait broke the traditional Gaelic system of tanistry, setting off a chain of events that would lead directly to the Norman conquest of Ireland. This episode marks the true beginning of the invasion story — where personal rivalry, political ambition, and one critical decision collide to reshape Irish history. If you’re enjoying the series, be sure to like, subscribe, and join us for the next lesson as Norman knights begin to arrive in Ireland and the invasion gathers momentum.

Ep 3 - Gaelic Ireland: Kingdoms, Tanistry, Rivalries & High Kings
In Lesson 3, we explore the world of Gaelic Ireland in the 12th century and examine how power really worked before the Norman invasion. This lesson looks at the major Irish kingdoms, the tanistry system, the rivalries between powerful dynasties, and the real meaning of the High Kingship of Ireland. Rather than a traditional monarchy, Gaelic Ireland was a complex patchwork of regional powers, competing families, and shifting alliances. We look at the roles of important kingdoms such as Leinster, Connacht, Munster, Meath, Breffni, and the O’Neill lands in the north, while also exploring how succession worked within Gaelic lordships. The lesson explains why tanistry could produce strong rulers, but also fierce internal rivalry, conflict, and instability. It also examines the social structure of Gaelic Ireland, from nobles and landowners to poets, historians, judges, farmers, and labourers. We also set the scene for the next stage of the story, as the rivalries between figures such as Ruaidrí Ua Conchobair, Muirchertach Mac Lochlainn, Diarmait Mac Murchada, and Tigernán Ua Ruairc help shape the Ireland that the Normans would soon enter. If you are enjoying this series, be sure to like, subscribe, and follow along as we continue into the next lesson and the opening phase of the Norman invasion of Ireland.#IrishHistory #GaelicIreland #MedievalIreland #HistoryOfIreland #NormanInvasion #HighKing #Tanistry #IrishHistoryTales

Ep 2 - Viking Ireland: The Truth About Dublin’s “Millennium” (1988) & the Battle of Clontarf
This episode dives into the fascinating, often misunderstood history of Viking Ireland, peeling back the layers of myth that have defined the era for generations. We explore how the arrival of the "heathen" Norsemen transformed a rural, cattle-based Gaelic society into a hub of international trade and urbanization. From the first terrifying raids on wealthy coastal monasteries to the establishment of permanent "longforts" like Dublin in 841 AD, we track the evolution of the Vikings from opportunistic raiders to permanent settlers and city-builders. We also tackle two of the biggest historical misconceptions in the Irish narrative:(1) The Battle of Clontarf (1014 AD): Was it truly a united Irish effort to expel foreign invaders? We look at the reality of a complex Gaelic civil war where Vikings fought on both sides, including the son-in-law of Brian Boru himself.(2)The 1988 Dublin Millennium: Why did the city celebrate its 1,000th birthday in 1988 when historical records show it was founded over a century earlier in 841 AD? We reveal how a clever tourist initiative became a widely accepted historical "fact".Finally, we examine the emergence of the "Hiberno-Norse" culture—a hybrid society where Viking elites and Gaelic royalty intermarried, minted the first Irish coins, and built the foundations of modern Irish cities like Waterford, Wexford, Cork, and Limerick.#historyofireland #vikings #irishhistory
