Episode #1174: Ups and Downs
It's been more than 80 days since the horrors of October 7th, and the healing process still has a very long way to go. There are more than 100 hostages hidden somewhere (presumably) beneath Gaza, we learn daily of more fallen Israeli soldiers, and yes, we still are a very pained nation. Can music help us heal? You tell us. This week, many of the songs are as depressing as can be...but maybe that's exactly what we need to help us move forward. We continue to look at the music of Operation Swords of Iron, as Israel Hour Radio helps you connect to the complicated mess of emotions deep inside every Israeli citizen. Episode #1173: Our Hope Is Not Yet Lost
War, sadness, death, hostages, casualties...as Operation Swords of Iron continues, the news isn't getting any easier to digest. But as usual, music helps us cope - and Israeli music seems to be a bit more upbeat, optimistic, and positive over the past few weeks. The roller coaster ride of emotions continues this week on Israel Hour Radio, but this time, the brand new music you'll hear is generally more positive than it has been lately. It's all about perspective and mindset. Sure, this 'feel-good' music isn't going to erase the bad news, but it might just help us get through our days and nights with a little more hope for a better future. Episode #1172: Banishing The Darkness
Chanukah 5784 is here - perhaps the most meaningful Chanukah in our lifetimes. With Israel at war and antisemitism rising around the world, the Chanukah story is as relevant as ever. Can we truly celebrate during these dark times? We think there's no better time to spread the light of Chanukah to banish the darkness. So this week, a little musical 'comfort food' as we celebrate Chanukah the way it's meant to be celebrated - with songs of light, candles, dreidels, latkes, sufganiyot, and more. Oh, and miracles...because we could sure use one this year. (Original Air Date: December 10, 2023) Full playlist at https://www.myisraelimusic.com/episode1172 Love the show? Episode #1170: An Emotional Roller Coaster
Ever since Operation Swords of Iron began, the situation has pulled our hearts and emotions in a gazillion different directions. On one hand, we're mourning the massive loss of life on October 7, and are worried sick about our hostages. On the other hand, we are bursting with pride for the brave IDF soldiers fighting for our freedom. Many Israelis are finding their spiritual voices, some for the very first time. Add the euphoria of some of the hostages coming home, and you suddenly find your heart being pulled down every possible pathway. Israeli music continues to latch onto each of these emotions, with songs that are spiritual, mournful, optimistic, proud, and just about everything in between. We continue to connect you to the vibe of today's Israel - as complicated as it may be. Episode #1169: Think Positive
For most of us who care about Israel, the past few weeks have been a roller coaster, to say the least. One minute we're deeply depressed, the next we're uplifted by the bravery and courage of the IDF. Along the way, we've probably felt every emotion in between. That's been the vibe in Israel ever since October 7, and that's been the theme of the music we've played over the past few weeks. This week, however, we thought it would be nice to focus on the positive, just for a bit. So with your help, we've assembled a playlist of Israeli songs of strength, positivity, unity, and optimism. No, these songs don't erase the sadness. But for an hour-long respite from the roller coaster, they might be just what the doctor ordered. Consider it a musical prescription to lift your spirits. 30 days since the 'Black Shabbat' of October 7, 2023, and it's not getting any easier. The images continue to haunt us, the hostage crisis continues to infuriate us, and the soldiers continue to inspire us. But as usual, music is there to unite us. Yes, the songs can be painful, heart-wrenching, and emotional, but they connect us to Eretz Yisrael and Am Yisrael in a very powerful and meaningful way. This week, we present more songs inspired by the events surrounding Operation Swords of Iron, performed by many of your favorite Israeli artists. These truly are songs you can FEEL...songs that, indeed, help build a stronger Israel. (Original Air Date: November 5, 2023) Full playlist at https://www.myisraelimusic.com/episode1167 Love the show? We return to you this week with very mixed emotions. On one hand, it's Josh's first show since making Aliyah, and he's thrilled to be back. On the other hand, Israel is at war - one that threatens its very survival. It's been a VERY rough week in Israel to say the least, and at the very least, we could all use a 'musical hug'. Join Josh on his very first broadcast from his home studio in Israel, as he shares the music he's been hearing on the radio this week along with your song requests. He'll also share his thoughts on watching the conflict unfold from the other side of the Mediterranean. Episode #1158: My Israeli Playlist - Breandan Ward
Our listeners pick their favorite Israeli songs! This time, we're pleased to introduce you to Breandan Ward of London, who has a very interesting Israeli music journey to share! Breandan grew up on a dairy farm in Ireland and moved to London after college where he worked in investment banking for 10 years before later moving to New York. His first encounter with Hebrew and Judaism happened when he met Israelis during a backpacking trip to Australia in 2002, around the same time as he started losing his sight due to an inherited eye disease. Inspired by both the similarities and tensions of the Irish and Jewish 'clan' mentalities, Breandan started learning Hebrew and Torah, and twenty years on, feels at home in the common experience of joys and sorrows of Israel and the Middle East as expressed through its music. Episode #1143: Remembering Yitzchak Klepter
The Israeli music world is still reeling from the loss of Yitzchak Klepter: composer, singer, and a *mean* guitarist. Most of us know his name very well from his time in the legendary 'Kaveret' ('Yo Ya', anyone?), but that just scratches the surface. Klepter was responsible for so much of the Israeli music we know and love, behind hit songs for Gidi Gov, Gali Atari, Arik Einstein and many others. Yitzchak Klepter passed away on December 8, 2022 at age 72, and we think you'll be surprised by some of the tunes you'll hear on our special tribute to his music. Episode #1129: Cray Cray
When you think about Israel, you may picture the Western Wall, the sandy beaches of Tel Aviv, or your favorite shuk (open-air market). But chances are, you'll also recall some sort of 'balagan' scenario; a chaotic scene, out-of-control lines at Ben Gurion airport, or just about any interaction with government bureaucracy. Our August Chagigot continue this week with a 'Chagigat Shirei Balagan' - a collection of songs with the word 'balagan' in the title or lyrics. If you've been to Israel, no doubt you've experienced a balagan once or twice. Be sure to tell us about the experience! Episode #1127: Shalom, Tzvika
On August 14, 2022, we awoke to the sad reality of a world without Tzvika Pick, who passed away earlier that day at the age of 72. Within minutes, we at Israel Hour Radio scrambled to pull together more than a dozen of Tzvika's greatest compositions, both sung by him and by other Israeli musical superstars. Truth be told, it wasn't so difficult. Tzvika's music is so much a part of the Israeli soundtrack of the past 50 years, that the 'greatest hits' you'll hear this week just scratch the surface of the incredible musical legacy 'The Maestro' leaves behind. Tzvika Pick will be sorely missed. (Original Air Date: August 14, 2022) Full playlist at https://www.myisraelimusic.com/episode1127 Love the show? Episode #1121: Singing the Praises of Jerusalem
One of the things we love about Israeli music is that, 74 years later, it still reflects a tremendous love for our country. This is especially true in the way Israel's music industry celebrates Yom Yerushalayim, commemorating the liberation and reunification of Israel's capital city in 1967. Considering we waited for this day for 2,000 years, it probably makes sense that we're singing about it 55 years later! As we celebrate Yom Yerushalayim 5782, we present an hour of musical love letters to Jerusalem - with some composed just this year.
