On April 19, 2023, the Israeli music world lost one of its most creative and accomplished minds, as poet and lyricist Yehonatan Geffen passed away at age 76. Yehonatan was responsible for some of the most famous Israeli songs ever written, with classic Israeli songs for adults and children alike. Breandan grew up on a dairy farm in Ireland and moved to London after college where he worked in investment banking for 10 years before later moving to New York. His first encounter with Hebrew and Judaism happened when he met Israelis during a backpacking trip to Australia in 2002, around the same time as he started losing his sight due to an inherited eye disease. Inspired by both the similarities and tensions of the Irish and Jewish 'clan' mentalities, Breandan started learning Hebrew and Torah, and twenty years on, feels at home in the common experience of joys and sorrows of Israel and the Middle East as expressed through its music. The Israeli music world is still reeling from the loss of Yitzchak Klepter: composer, singer, and a *mean* guitarist. Most of us know his name very well from his time in the legendary 'Kaveret' ('Yo Ya', anyone?), but that just scratches the surface. Klepter was responsible for so much of the Israeli music we know and love, behind hit songs for Gidi Gov, Gali Atari, Arik Einstein and many others. On August 14, 2022, we awoke to the sad reality of a world without Tzvika Pick, who passed away earlier that day at the age of 72. Within minutes, we at Israel Hour Radio scrambled to pull together more than a dozen of Tzvika's greatest compositions, both sung by him and by other Israeli musical superstars. Truth be told, it wasn't so difficult. Tzvika's music is so much a part of the Israeli soundtrack of the past 50 years, that the 'greatest hits' you'll hear this week just scratch the surface of the incredible musical legacy 'The Maestro' leaves behind.
