Latto, Big Mama, and The Whistlin Woman
Latto is retiring at 28. Her album Big Mama drops Friday, she's pregnant with her first child, but the most interesting part of the rollout to me is retirement. Big Mama is a it's about a three-thousand-year-old archetype who already has an agreed upon identity so is Latto announcing retirement means Big Mama is getting renegotiated in public? No actually I believe Latto fits into a much different part of tradition. It's Always That Deep combines the history and lived experience of Blackness through trending events happening right now.
