My wife wants to spend thousands on a fancy washer & dryer because her friends all have something similar. How do I convince her this is nuts?!
These appliances have gotten very sophisticated over the years and when you go looking it's easy to get sucked into the "clearly we need this" mindset. But really all that's needed is a new washer & dryer and not the most expensive. And there is a way to keep that top of mind as your weighing the options.
-

I really don't like meeting new people. I feel awkward and like I don't know what to say so is there a trick to making it easier?
Social skills are really like any other skill you learn in life; they just might feel harder to master than others. But anyone can do it. Would you feel encouraged if I told you all it takes is time and practice?
-
78
My boyfriend and I just broke up and next month we were planning to go on vacation together. He says I should pay him the cost of the non-refundable airfare because I chose the destination. Is that reasonable?
An unexpected break up catches everyone off guard and we are typically not at our best in these moments. Not everyone is flexible and adaptable (which is why these skills are so coveted in the workforce!). So sorting out what's actually fair in this scenario is likely to take more time than it should.
-
77
We're expecting our first baby so we told our parents and swore them to secrecy. But my mother-in-law told the whole family. Is it okay to get mad at her for this?
It's a terrible feeling when someone betrays your trust by capriciously sharing a major secret. Being a good secret keeper is a skill that way too many people have not mastered. So when it happens to you, the only thing you can control in the aftermath is how you choose to react.
-
76
My husband doesn't want to go on vacation because he's nervous about his job. But we really need a break so how do I convice him?
We are hearing about lots of layoffs in the news these days and feeling like you're walking on eggshells at work really sucks. Do you plan for the worst and hope for the best? It feels better than going into that worry thought loop every single day.
-
75
My sister & her husband are bad with money and always asking me for a loan. How can I put a stop to this without sounding harsh?
Saving and losing weight have one thing in common. They both require discipline and while you probably had a health class in high school, I bet you didn't have a money class. It's kind of shocking schools don't teach students how to budget income to pay bills and also save. But it's never too late to learn.
-
74
I'm a nervous wreck during job interviews. What's the secret to beating this kind of anxiety?
Being nervous in an interview is a good thing because it shows the meeting is important to you. But you don't want that nervous energy to take over and impede your ability to represent yourself well. There's more than one thing you can do to help feel more relaxed. The key is finding the mix of things that work best for you.
-
73
When I make plans with my friend she almost always invites someone else without asking me. I'm so annoyed but this but how do I tell her without sounding needy?
We've all got at least one friend who does this and it's just rude behavior. Didn't their parents teach them this?! Unless the person she's bringing is a surprise for you that she's knows for a fact will thrill you, it's unacceptable.
-
72
My friend got a rescue over a year ago & he's precious but completely untrained so it's impossible to have a conversation around him. I want to tell her how annoying this is but don't want to make her feel bad.
Pets are the best and dogs in particular are amazing, in my opinion. I love cats, too, just not the litter box. And if you're not prepared to train an animal you should not own one. You get out of the experience what you put into it and at the start, you've got to put in a lot of energy and effort.
-
71
I got a call from a recruiter from a company I've always wanted to work for but my organization just sent me to an expensive training. Should I even explore this?
Companies should be investing in developing their employees and it doesn't happen often enough. So when it does, people might feel like they need to show their appreciation in ways beyond just doing their very best work. A good question to ask yourself is this: where have I seen loyalty to a corporation really benefit an employee?
-
70
I'm hating my job so much right now I wish I could just quit, but I can't. Is there anything I can do to make it more tolerable?
Needing a job you don't want to go to everyday is a super tough spot to be in and finding a new job never seems to happen fast enough! But there are some things you can do to affect your mindset and they're not woo-woo; they're real action steps.
-
69
My in-laws Like to come over whenever they feel like it. I've asked them to call first but it hasn't helped. How do I get through to them?
If you have difficult to manage in-laws, it can really test your relationship. But plenty of people have them and figure out ways to deal with them in a way that doesn't get everyone in a kerfuffle. They may think it's okay for them to pop on over whenever they want, but it's not. It's actually quite rude.
-
68
A friend moved into her boyfriend's condo. He owns it and I tried to tell her that could put her in a jam if/when they break up and she ignored me. How can I get her to listen?
People get so excited to live together, they often don't stop to consider what's involved if it doesn't work out. They've never had a relationship where they did NOT break up and they still don't ask themselves this question. The assumption is being unmarried makes everything else easier and in reality it doesn't.
-
67
I made a new friend this year which is great, but she's already talking about taking trips together. How do I slow her roll but in a nice way?
The new friendship stage can feel kind of fragile. Especially if it's been a while since you've welcomed someone new into your social circle. It also takes a good amount of time before you know if someone will be a good travel companion. And is there anything worse than being in a fabulous place with someone who's making you miserable?
-
66
I want to go to my boyfriend's family reunion this summer. We're together 2 years now and we're serious so how do I tell him it's time?
The first thing this question makes me think of is 'be careful what you wish for.' Getting to know someone's family is a critical factor in deciding if you want him to be your life partner but there's another question to consider here --- how soon is too soon?
-
65
My friend loses herself in every relationship. Suddenly his favorite activities become hers, they go out with his friends and she stays at his place. It's painful to watch so how can I help her?
This is a hard thing to witness -- to watch a friend almost become someone else every time she steps into a relationship. But are a few things you can try to help her see what she may not even realize what's going on.
-
64
A friend expressed doubts about getting married while we were addressing her wedding invitations and ended our conversation saying she'll just get divorced if it doesn't work out. Should I reopen the dialogue & encourage her to break it off?
It's normal to feel a some anxiety about a big decision like getting married. It means lots of big changes in your life and nobody wants to be careless about it. So how do you know if its "cold feet" or something more significant?
-
63
I just found out the guy I've been seeing a bad credit score. Should I break it off now before it gets too serious?
People hate to talk about money and yet it's so central to every partnership relationship. It's good to uncover a red flag early, as long as it's a REAL red flag.
-
62
My brother is engaged to a woman who does not fit in with the family & she's just not right for him. Should we stage an intervention to tell him how we feel?
When you can clearly see the sibling you know so well is about to make a big mistake it's natural to want to intervene and spare him the pain and agony you know he'll experience in the future. But does that mean it's the right thing to do?
-
61
My mom always said she'd help me when I had kids, but it's 3 kids later and she's M.I.A. What's the best way to remind her of how she said she would help?
Howie Mandel once told me that if he'd known how fun it was to have grandchildren, he would've done that first. Perhaps not all grandparents are keen to be that involved with your kids and there's only one way to find out.
-
60
I really want to change careers but I'm 35 years old already. Is it too late?
Aren't we always looking for the perfect timing to do something? I bet you can put a lot of thought into strategizing the ideal scenario before you begin something. Because if we can just get that part right everything will be easier. But what if the ideal timing is already gone. Should you just give up?

My boyfriend and I have been together for a year and he wants me to buy a house in the country with my inheritance money and he will do the maintenance. I said no and now he’s acting like he’s too busy to spend time with me. What should I do?
Relationships are always going to be about compromise and not everyone is naturally good at that. It takes a mature, emotionally developed person to be good at compromise. So, if he hasn't learned it by now, is it even possible?
-
58
How honest can I be on a first date? Lately I feel like 3 months in I find out I’ve been wasting my time and it’s exhausting.
It does take a lot of time, energy and effort to get to know someone. And it can feel deeply disappointing to realize it's not going to work when it seemed like things were going so well. Is there a cheat code for saving time and getting to the stuff that matters faster?
-
57
I have a good friend who has completely opposite political views from mine and I don’t want to end the friendship but when she talks politics, it drives me nuts! How do we find common ground?
This has been an ongoing struggle for so many of us. It's beyond frustrating when someone you love, and otherwise respect, isn't connecting to a viewpoint on an issue you find to be completely obvious. But it's happening to lots of us everyday and there is a way around it.
-
56
I'm interviewing for a new job and getting close to offers and a friend told me not to accept during Mercury Retrograde which is soon. But is that even real?
Plenty of people think all things astrology are hogwash but I'm not sure any of those people have any direct experience with it. There's an easy way to figure out if it makes sense for you and even if it does it's really just another data point with which to work.
-
55
I just move back to my hometown and ran into an old colleague who's keen to be friends but I don't want that. How do I handle her playdate and lunch invites without seeming rude?
Real friends give us energy, joy, and vitality while being in a room with people you don't connect with does just the opposite. We never want to appear to be deliberately rude and uncaring but fi you have to ride that line to protect your own needs is that okay?
-
54
I'm into yoga and keeping healthy but my partner is not. Is there something I can do to get him to move more?
The saying 'you can't push a string' comes to mind and nudging or prodding can sure get irritating. There is always another way. Knowing that a lot of our future health is in our hands can be very empowering.
-
53
I'm getting married in a month and feeling a little freaked out about how much my life is going to change. Is this just cold feet or a sign I'm making a mistake?
It never hurts to re-evaluate important decisions, to make sure you're making them for the right reasons, and with marriage in particular that can be hard.
-
52
My husband is not good with gifts so I didn't get a Christmas present this year. It's fine, but I wish it were different. Is it possible to get him to change?
Love languages aren't always a match so we can sometimes feel like we're not exactly in sync. We are continually evolving, learning about ourselves and our partners and that can enhance a relationship so much.
-
51
What can I do to finally get promoted this year?
You're working hard at your job, going beyond the assignment, thinking proactively and yet each time that promotions list comes around you're not on it. It's a frustrating situation but what can you do about it? A lot, actually.
-
50
Every January my best friend talks non-stop about her resolutions only to fail by February. Can I just tell her to give it up already?
Even our closest friends will annoy us from time to time -- especially when we feel like we know them better than they seem to know themselves. So is it a good thing to be really honest with someone in the name of saving them time and energy?
-
49
I found out my boyfriend of 2 years is planning to propose on Christmas Day in front of my entire family and I'm not sure I want to say yes. Should I go through the motions and maybe break it off later if I'm still not sure?
Lawyers in court never ask a question they don't already know the answer to and the same should be true for proposals. If you don't 100% know for certain the answer is going to be yes, don't ask. There's no magic in the act of asking if you have not discussed plans for the future -- but there will be fear and panic.
-
48
My husband isn't taking any time off work during the holidays this year and I'm so mad he's missing a lot of the kids activities. How do I convince him this fleeting time is precious and he needs to prioritize family?
Men have a lot of their ego wrapped up in their work which is tough to separate. And, of course, in his eyes he's doing all of this for his family so it's easy to see how differing perspectives can lead to a stalemate in this discussion.
-
47
It's supposed to be the most wonderful time of the year but I'm so stressed out it feels like the worst. How awful would it be if I bought a ticket to the Bahamas and left my family behind for a mental health week?
It might sound extreme but you know in your heart of hearts you've wanted to fast forward to January just so you could get some rest. So how do you escape from the stress of a holiday that's supposed to be joyous without ruining it for everyone else?
-
46
Every Christmas my in-laws load up my kids with toys and now they have so many they can't even play with them all. How do I tell them it's all too much?
If gift giving is their love language this will be extra difficult. Encouraging them to spend meaningful amounts of time with the kids is always a good place to start. Older folks and young kids make for good company and they go together like a wink and a smile.
-
45
Is it okay to ask a friend if they're taking weight loss meds?
It does seem obvious when someone who hasn't been able to shed weight since you've known them suddenly starts dropping clothes sizes without ever joining the gym but does that mean they want to talk about it?
-
44
How do I get my family to get off their phones during Christmas dinner?!
If this feels rude that's only because it is rude. Mom and Dad wouldn't let us read at the dinner table, so is reading a portable screen any better? No. in fact it's way worse.
-
43
All my mom wants for Christmas this year is cigarettes and I'm not comfortable supporting her smoking! What do I say to her so she won't get mad?
It's really hard when we love people who have unhealthy addictions. As much as we might try to get them to change their behaviors, it usually ends in frustration because it's difficult to compete with an addiction. It's not impossible to win, but it is double tough.
-
42
I get so nervous for job interviews how can I calm myself down?
It's tough to present your best self when your palms are sweaty and your voice is shaky but there's a simple technique that really helps give you confidence.
-
41
My parents are coming to town for the holidays and my husband wants them to stay in a hotel so how do I arrange that without hurt feelings?
If it's too much of a sacrifice for your husband to host your parents you've got to find a way to get them excited about the hotel because you don't want to increase his cortisol levels (or yours) anymore than absolutely necessary.
-
40
How can I stay friends with my ex?
I know only a handful of people who dated seriously and then managed to remain longtime friends after breaking up. There's a reason it doesn't usually work out but that doesn't mean it can't work for you.
-
39
I took a job 3 months ago and it's already a disaster. This was a huge mistake but how long do I have to stick it out before I can look for a new job?
This can happen to any one of us, even if you feel like you did the best research. It's tough to know what it's like to work a job inside a company until you're entrenched. It's always a risk and we try our best to mitigate it, but with everyone on their best behavior in the interview process red flags can be elusive.
-
38
I want to date my friend's ex-boyfriend and I know he's into me. It's been 8 months since the break up so do you think that's enough time?
While it's totally normal to become attracted to people you see frequently that doesn't mean it's incumbent upon you to act on those feelings. You've got to think long term about the potential repercussions. Is this guy so special that you're willing to risk losing your friendship?
-
37
Whenever I have lunch with my best friend she always has her phone on the table, face up. She knows I think this is rude but she says she has to be available for her kids. Am I the inconsiderate one or is she?
How many times have we been to restaurants where people at the same table are not looking at each other but down at their phone screens. It looks ridiculous but they don't notice because they are so busy there's no time to look up!
-
36
My boyfriend wants us to be with friends every Friday & Saturday night, but I need a night at home to reconnect with the couch! I'm tired of arguing about this so how to get him to understand?
When you're with someone who has a different weekend style than you it can be tricky. Relationships are about being together but that doesn't mean relinquishing your freedoms and all the things you like to do (or don't do) in favor of what your partner prefers.
-
35
How do I negotiate a higher salary for my new job without coming across as greedy?
It's true that the negotiation process is part of the first impression you're making on your new employer but that doesn't mean you can't ask for what you want. You want to be compensated appropriately -- what sounds greedy about that?
-
34
I just got a job offer from a company I'm really excited about but I know it's not good to start new things during Mercury Retrograde so how can I delay?
We do not have the complete picture when making decisions under mercury retrograde. It means that we're missing information and since we don't know what we don't know, it's tough to feel great about the decision. Can you be comfortable knowing the picture is incomplete and move forward anyway?
-
33
Every time our friend gets a boyfriend she disappears from the group and then when they break up she's back. What's the best way to tell her we don't want to play second choice to whomever she's dating?
It's interesting how some of our friends seem to lose their entire identity as soon as a romantic relationship enters the picture. And they immerse themselves in his life and forget about or at least set aside those things that would've been important to them in their single life.
-
32
Do you think I can get the family to agree on no presents this year? We're mostly adults and, of course, we'll get gifts for the kids but the rest of us have way too much stuff already.
This is practical and makes a lot of sense but people don't like it when you mess with their holiday traditions. You might have found that out the hard way when you decided to make something different for Thanksgiving. Never give up, though. Even when change seems impossible you can be surprised.
-
31
I got ghosted after a couple of months of dating this guy and I want to confront him after work one day to find out why. What do you think?
We really don't like mysteries, which is why we'll stick it out to the end of a show we don't even like -- just to find out what happens. And getting ghosted is personal so in the absence of facts, we come up with all sorts of reasons for it and drive ourselves (& our friends) a little nuts in the process. Confrontations don't usually inspire open dialogue so I suggested a couple of other options she might consider.
