Alumnisohvalle istahti Heikki Salo, useasti palkittu muusikko, lauluntekijä ja kirjailija, joka tunnetaan erityisesti Miljoonasade-yhtyeen keulahahmona. Hän on julkaissut useita sooloalbumeita ja sanoittanut kappaleita monille suomalaisille artisteille. Salon tuotanto ulottuu musiikin lisäksi teatteriin, televisioon ja kirjallisuuteen – hän on kirjoittanut näytelmiä, tv-sketsejä ja oppikirjan laululyriikasta nimeltä Kahlekuningaslaji. Keskustelimme, kuinka yliopisto-opinnot ovat vaikuutaneet hänen uraansa.

Kuinka miehestä, josta ei pitänyt koskaan tulla biologia, tuli biologi, tutkiva journalisti ja palkittu tietokirjailija? Ketkä kaikki sotaa käyvät, ja kuka sen voi voittaa? Tämä on Mieli taistelukenttänä – ohjelma informaatiovaikuttamisesta ja kognitiivisesta sodankäynnistä. Tässä jaksossa käsitellään toimijoita, jotka mielistä kamppailevat. Informaatiosodankäynnin keskeisiä toimijoita ovat myös esimerkiksi ääriliikkeet ja terroristijärjestöt, mutta tässä jaksossa keskitymme erityisesti Kiinaan, Yhdysvaltoihin ja Venäjään. Who said ESN was just for exchange students? In the spring 2025 season finale of the JYU for YOU podcast, we are joined by ESN Jyväskylä’s PR & Communication Manager Idlin Berta Arshinova. As a talented performer interested in languages, Idlin had always hoped to study abroad in one of the Nordic countries: fortunately for her, and for Finland, she found herself as an exchange student at JYU in Autumn 2024. Determined to get as much as possible from her experience, Idlin immediately decided to engage with her local community and offer her skills to this new city she would learn to call home. This determination led her to Jyväskylä’s Orchestra, a leadership position in ESN and even her own dance class as part of uMove! Having fallen in love with her new surroundings, in particular the nature and overall peaceful lifestyle, Idlin knew that JYU was the place where she wanted to continue her academic journey so she applied to the LAGIC international master’s degree programme. Miten yhdistää arvot ja tutkittu tieto seurakunnan metsäpäätöksissä? Ylöjärven seurakunta lähti pari vuotta sitten tavoittelemaan kirkon ympäristödiplomia – ja päätyi pohtimaan arvojensa suhdetta metsänhoitopäätöksiin. Tässä jaksossa kappalainen Jyrki Koivisto ja tutkijatohtori Jelena Salmi tarjoavat kurkistuksen siihen, miten arvopohjainen ja tutkimukseen nojaava päätöksenteko voi konkretisoitua seurakunnan metsätyössä. Koivisto valottaa moniarvoisen metsäsuunnitelman tekemisen vaiheita ja kertoo millaiset kumppanuudet koki matkan varrella hyödyllisiksi. Salmi avaa erityisesti ForTran- ja Kohti vahvan kestävyyden metsäpalveluita -hankkeiden Ylöjärvellä toteuttamaa työpajaa, jossa pyrittiin yhdistämään seurakunnan arvot metsänhoitokäytäntöihin ja tutkittuun tietoon. In this episode of the JYU for YOU podcast, we are joined by Iida Akselin – a health sciences student with a specialization in health promotion. Iida shares with us her story of how she ended up coming to Jyväskylä from Oulu; originally with the intention to pursue a degree in psychology. While she wasn’t able to make it into the psychology programme, Iida fell in love with Jyväskylä at first sight and decided to move to the city and find her path! A year into living in Jyväskylä, Iida found herself in the unique programme of the Faculty of Sports and Health Sciences. Her desire to grow professionally and work in communication and marketing for health promotion led her naturally to JYU.Well: the umbrella organization at JYU that acts as a networking hub for staff, students and scientists to come together and approach wellbeing in a holistic manner. Through her summer internship in 2024, as well as her current work with JYU.Well, she developed her ability to work in a multidisciplinary environment and to create engaging, as well as relevant content informed by research, for a broad audience. Marc’s journey with JYU began not as a researcher, but as a curious student eager to pursue a master’s degree in musicology. Aleksis Salusjärvi - lukutaidon puolestapuhuja Aleksis Salusjärvi on espoolainen kirjallisuuden asiantuntija, joka innostui lukemisesta ja kirjoittamisesta jo nuorena. Hän päätyi Jyväskylään opiskelemaan, sillä lukion äidinkielen opettaja näki hänen kirjallisen lahjakkuutensa. Aleksis opiskeli ensin Oriveden opistolla sanataidetta ja suoritti tämän jälkeen maisteriopintonsa Jyväskylän yliopistossa, jossa hän perehtyi kirjallisuuteen, taidehistoriaan ja taidekasvatukseen. JYU tuntui Aleksista rajattomien mahdollisuuksien paikalta. Hän kuvailee opiskelijakaupungin uteliaisuutta ja kiinnostusta täynnä olevaa energiaa lumoavaksi, ja kokee olevansa etuoikeutettu saadessaan osallistua tämän ylläpitämiseen. Uran suhteen Aleksiksella ei ollut tarkkoja suunnitelmia. Hän korostaa, että mahdollisuudet syntyvät usein sattumalta, mutta niiden taustalla ovat yleensä vahvat ihmissuhteet ja yhteisöllisyys - kuten kahvilassa yhdessä kirjojen lukeminen työntekijöiden sekä opiskelijaystävien kanssa. Hän päätyi onnekkaiden sattumien kautta tekemään sitä, mikä todella tuntuu omalta – kirjoittamista ja lukutaidon edistämistä. Nykyään Aleksis työskentelee lukutaidon parissa, erityisesti nuorten ja syrjäytymisvaarassa olevien henkilöiden kanssa, kuten vankiloissa ja erityisluokilla. Hän uskoo lukutaidon voivan auttaa ihmisiä löytämään paikkansa yhteiskunnassa ja muuttamaan elämänsä suunnan. Hän kertoo tuntevansa usean rikostaustaisen henkilön, joka on halunnut tehdä elämänmuutoksen ja on onnistunut siinä - tässä prosessissa olennaisena osana oli nimenomaan lukutaidon oppiminen. Opittuaan artikuloimaan itseään, he ovat onnistuneet saamaan esimerkiksi koulupaikan ja oman kodin. Aleksis kokee lukutaidon merkityksen erityisen tärkeänä juuri tämänkaltaisten elämäntarinoiden myötä. Aleksiksen mukaan opiskelun tarkoituksena tulisi olla tiedonhalun tyydyttäminen pelkän tutkinnon sijaan. Hän kuvailee Jyväskylän yliopistoa nuorekkaaksi, vanhaksi ja elämännälkäiseksi paikaksi. “Olen osa tätä yhteisöä, joka pitää sivistystä yllä ja se on elämän ja kuolemankin kysymys monessakin suhteessa meille valtiona. Ja se vaatii kyllä yliopistotaustan.” Työ ei ole hänelle vain toimeentuloa, vaan hän kokee sen osaksi elämänsä suurempaa tarkoitusta.

In this episode of the JYU for YOU podcast, host Irfan interviews Finland’s top young physicist, Henna Kokkonen, who gained international recognition after discovering a new isotope while working on her master’s thesis. Now a successful doctoral researcher at JYU’s Nuclear Spectroscopy Group, Henna’s academic journey began with a love for sports and a curiosity about history, until a passionate physics teacher ignited her interest in physics. Despite some initial concerns, through hard work and dedication, as well as some good friends, Henna managed to find a place for herself. She credits her success to the support from her friends, family, and the Physics Department at JYU. Breaking the physicist stereotype, she balances her research with traveling, playing on a local volleyball team, Vehniän Wartti, and socializing.
