At the Kilkenny City Municipal District's May meeting, Cllr Seán Ó hArgáin (Lab) tabled a motion calling for "an audit of all vacant units ‘over the shop’ in the city centre core". He also called for "consideration of a ‘one stop shop’ approach to advise owners on the possibilities of conversion of these units to badly needed housing accommodation, including energy retrofits, disability access modifications, fire certification, etc. " Cllr Ó hArgáin explained the rationale behind his motion to KCLR News reporter Dermot Keyes.

KCLR News speaks to Roy Collins about a celebration for the late Paul O'Brien (14th May 2026)
A fundraising concert for the family of a South Kilkenny man who died last January will be held in Waterford's Tower Hotel on Friday week, May 22nd. Paul O'Brien, who was only 48 years of age when he died earlier this year, made many friends in his native Kilkenny and adopted Waterford City home through music and the arts. He is survived by his wife Louise and four children: Alice, Aoife, Jade and Holly. Roy Collins, one of Paul's best friends, told KCLR News about the concert, which will celebrate Paul's rich creative life.

KCLR News: Cllr Charlie Murphy on 'rethinking' Ireland's energy future (13th May 2026)
At the May meeting of Carlow County Council, Independent Councillor Charlie Murphy won support for the following motion: "We the elected members of Carlow County Council, due to the continuing geopolitical and uncertainty of supplies to oil and gas since the Ukraine War and the Middle East request the Minister (for Climate, Energy and the Environment) to carefully consider the provisions in (the) Climate Action and Low Carbon Development (Amendment) Act 2021. "(a) The long-term requirement for fossil fuel is real and the case to review the ban on oil and gas exploration licences to be renewed and attract industrial development of our indigenous resources and fuel security. (b) Making sovereign proven gas a productive asset to deliver secure hydrocarbons for the State. "(c) Rebalancing national energy policy to remove the impossible obligation erroneously set in law by the previous government to achieve climate neutrality by 2050. Having done that, to ensure that all State companies and agencies are free to achieve a balance between sustainability, competitiveness, security of supply and economic good." KCLR News' Dermot Keyes spoke to Cllr Murphy following a lively debate on the matter in Council chambers.

KCLR News on textile sustainability and Carlow's circular economy (8th May 2026)
A collaborative project between SETU's Carlow campus, Carlow County Council and Carlow Town's charity retail sector placed students at the forefront of addressing textile sustainability and circular economy challenges in the town. The initiative involved 16 international students from SETU Carlow's 4th Year Applied Business Solutions course, who explored how circular economy principles can reduce textile waste and support more sustainable consumption locally. The long-awaited cleaning and de-silting of the King’s River at Callan has been hit with yet another delay, much to the frustration of local residents and political representatives alike. The KCLR Daily: Fishery Manager at Mount Juliet Estate encounters a rare Mayfly
Dan O'Neill is the fishing manager and guide at Kilkenny's Mount Juliet Estate he was fishing in the estate and noticed a very unusual looking insect which interested him enough that he took a photo of it and posted it. He was contacted afterwards by an academic expert on insects in UCD who informed him that the insect in question hasn’t been seen in these parts since perhaps the 1940’s. KCLR News at the 2026 Kilkenny Community Awards (1st May 2026)
Voluntary groups and organisations from Kilkenny city and county were recognised at the Parade Tower in Kilkenny Castle last night (April 30th) where the local authority held its Community Awards night. Cathaoirleach Mary Hilda Cavanagh led to the tributes to the county's IPB Pride of Place nominees and leading Tidy Towns entrants, and said their efforts illustrated the strength and sense of community throughout Kilkenny. Anne Marie Shortall is the Senior Executive Officer in Kilkenny County Council's Community Department and she begins our round-up with KCLR's Dermot Keyes, followed by several award winners who were recognised for their efforts last night.
