Teachback Tuesday-Contentious Relationships
Welcome to TEACHBACK TUESDAY! This episode had thousands of downloads in Season One. There must be a reason for that! Perhaps it's partly because we all have this human tendency to be argumentative, challenging, and even quarrelsome at times. If you had a chance to catch Contentious Relationships in 2021, this will be a refresher, but if you're new to Keep the Heart, this will give you some things to carefully consider in how you're interacting with others. Are there certain things that just easily set you off? If so, you'll find that these irritants often lead to disagreements in your relationships. We will never argue our way to happiness, and the only satisfaction in winning an argument is proving that you can be contentious to the finish line. What can we do about this human tendency to be contentious? The Bible has a lot to say about this subject, but we’ll just examine a few verses in this episode, leaving room for you to continue this important topical study on your own. Build Your Bible Habit-Proverbs Chapter 5
Welcome back to Build Your Bible Habit, where you can listen to a chapter of Proverbs in under five minutes while gaining valuable wisdom and understanding. This chapter opens with an instruction that could be summed up in a word: LISTEN. The next portion of the chapter includes warnings about the pitfalls of immorality, which always takes more than it gives and costs more than anyone wants to pay. The chapter continues with instructions for husbands to take to heart. Having a loving relationship is a priceless treasure. Even though this is a "couples" chapter, the wisdom is good for all of us to heed. It boils down to contentment. "Drink waters out of thine own cistern, and running waters out of thine own well." Build Your Bible Habit-Proverbs Chapter 7
Welcome back to Build Your Bible Habit, where you can listen to a chapter of Proverbs in under five minutes. Chapter seven is a tough one. If you're a daily Proverb reader, you already know this. The first four verses sound like "walk the talk" instructions, but then the chapter pivots to a very dark story about a young man "void of understanding" (he lacked wisdom) and the "strange woman" (she was not this young man's wife). Did you ever wonder about the life of the woman in this chapter? I often do, as every life has a history. Listen to Proverbs 7 with a heart devoted to avoiding the snares outlined in this chapter. Whether you are a man or a woman, the warnings are for everyone. "Hearken unto me now therefore, O ye children, and attend to the words of my mouth." Build Your Bible Habit-Proverbs Chapter 27
Welcome back to Build Your Bible Habit. This is a habit that you'll never want to break. The practical wisdom from daily Proverbs equips us to walk in wisdom, making us better in handling the multiple decisions and interactions that come our way. God left us a GOLD MINE in His Word, and all we need to do is read it and apply it to our lives. The peace of God is not related to our circumstances. It is a result of walking with Him. Friendship is one of many areas touched on in Proverbs 27, and verse 17 gives us a chance to consider friendship from two angles: the kind of friends we choose and the kind of friend that we are to others. God meant for us to keep each other spiritually sharp. Here's a great reminder verse for the week: "Iron sharpeneth iron; so a man sharpeneth the countenance of his friend." Build Your Bible Habit-Proverbs Chapter 18
Welcome back to Build Your Bible Habit, where you can listen to a chapter of Proverbs in under five minutes. Reading along as you listen is also a great habit. The Word of God is instructional, and the book of Proverbs is practical enough to apply to everyday situations. Here's an example: Suppose a friend comes to you and asks what you think of taking medication for depression. Do you just jump in and answer according to your personal opinion, or do you ask enough questions to understand the "why" behind the problem? When we attempt to help people solve surface issues rather than root problems, we are not helping. Proverbs 18: 13 is a great reminder verse, guiding us to ask more questions rather than just blurting out an opinion: "He that answereth a matter before he heareth it, it is folly and shame unto him." (Proverbs 18:13) God makes life make sense. Build Your Bible Habit-Proverbs Chapter 26
Welcome back to Build Your Bible Habit, where you can gain valuable wisdom for daily living. Each chapter has life applications that are like having the answers to a pop quiz! Here's an example: Two people are in a quarrel that has nothing to do with you, but you make the mistake of deciding you will be the referee. The Bible has simple advice for this: DON'T. "He that passeth by, and meddleth with strife belonging not to him, is like one that taketh a dog by the ears." (Proverbs 26:17) Here's what Bible commentator Matthew Henry wrote about Proverbs 26:17: "He that has got a dog by the ears, if he lets him go he flies at him, if he keeps his hold, he has his hands full, and can do nothing else." (So it's better not to take the dog by the ears!) Take five. Build your Bible habit. Build Your Bible Habit-Proverbs Chapter 29
Welcome back to Build Your Bible Habit, where you can listen to a chapter of Proverbs in about five minutes. The life applications in Proverbs are so deeply valuable, our lives are enriched when we live what we learn from these gold mine chapters of scripture. Here's a pointed reminder for the day from Proverbs 29:9: "If a wise man contendeth with a foolish man, whether he rage or laugh, there is no rest." Do you have a dispute with a foolish person? Save your breath. It won't end reasonably, but usually ends without any gain. "There is no rest" when a wise person tries to reason with a foolish person. Sadly, the fool doesn't think there is a God, and so they have no motivation to follow biblical principles. Hold the argument. VISIT THE SHOP AT KEEP THE HEART! Build Your Bible Habit-Proverbs Chapter 16
Welcome back to chapter 16 on Build Your Bible Habit. Every chapter of Proverbs includes life instructions that help us to handle matters wisely (Prov. 16:20). The Word of God is sufficient to guide us in every aspect of our lives, but we need to know what it says in order to follow the guidance. Do you trust God so much with your life that you pray for direction and then only want His will? "Thy will be done" is an essential part of the prayer pattern that Christ left us in Matthew 6:9-13. Proverbs 16:3 is another way of saying, "Thy will be done." When we commit our works to the Lord, He makes us stable, secure, and steadfast. "Commit thy works unto the LORD, and thy thoughts shall be established." (Proverbs 16:3) Building your Bible habit with a daily Proverb will increase your wisdom and understanding as you yield your plans to God and apply His Word to your life. Welcome back to Build Your Bible Habit, where you can listen to a chapter of Proverbs in about five minutes. What we gain in this daily habit is priceless! Whenever we mishandle a situation, it is due to either a lack of wisdom or the failure to apply wise principles. Wisdom helps us to make better choices and decisions. God wants to help us to become wiser, but we have to turn away from our own self-directed living and trade it for God's direction. Welcome back to Build Your Bible Habit! The next five minutes in Proverbs chapter 17 will increase your wisdom and strength, if you apply what you learn. Daily Proverbs are to the soul what powerful nutrients are to the physical body: life-changing. Here's a verse for your week: "The beginning of strife is as when one letteth out water: therefore leave off contention, before it be meddled with." (Proverbs 17:14) Practice it: The next time you sense a conversation is turning into an argument, "leave off contention." You don't have to argue, and the discussion can continue when both sides have cooled off. Learn to recognize "the beginning of strife" and don't keep talking past that point. Pause. Welcome back to Build Your Bible Habit, where you can listen to a chapter of Proverbs to grow in wisdom and knowledge. One of the most popular passages from Proverbs 3 is found in verses 5-6: "Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths." (Proverbs 3:5-6) It's one thing to know this passage. It's a lot harder to live it. As you're listening to Proverbs 3, carefully consider each verse and ask yourself this question: "Do I live by this, or just listen to it?" Bible application can be summed up in two words: live it. Build Your Bible Habit-Proverbs Chapter 13
Welcome back to Build Your Bible Habit! Proverbs chapter 13 is a study of contrasts: "live like this, not like that." The practicality of these verses will sharpen and equip you to walk in greater wisdom. Here's an example: "Good understanding giveth favour: but the way of transgressors is hard." (Proverbs 13:15) When we know what is right, but we choose to do the wrong thing anyway, Proverbs 13:15 clearly warns us that our way will be "hard." It's not easy to live biblically, but the alternative is harder. We do get to choose. VISIT THE SHOP AT KEEP THE HEART! Apply: Living What We Learn--31-Day Devotional by Francie Taylor NEW! Welcome back to Build Your Bible Habit, where you can listen to a Proverbs chapter in under five minutes! Proverbs 16 is loaded with life application principles that guide us into handling matters wisely. God's Word teaches us not only how to live, but even how to speak. Words have power, and when we employ them like power tools--with care--we arrive at better outcomes in our interactions with others. Here's a great verse example: "The heart of the wise teacheth his mouth, and addeth learning to his lips." (Proverbs 16:23) Notice that this verse says "the heart of the wise teacheth his mouth." Welcome back to Build Your Bible Habit, where you can listen to a chapter of Proverbs in under 5 minutes. The point isn't to make Bible study as short as possible. The goal is to build a daily Bible habit. Time in the Word is personal time with God: "In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God." (John 1:1) In less time than it takes to scroll through social media, you could listen to a chapter of life-changing Proverbs, building your relationship with Christ while growing in grace and knowledge. Build Your Bible Habit-Proverbs Chapter 14
Welcome back to Build Your Bible Habit! The habit of being in the Word of God daily builds us up, making us spiritually stronger. God uses the "knowledge of the holy" to give us understanding, helping us to make wiser decisions and choices in our lives. Proverbs 14 is full of instructions, observations, and even warnings like this: "Go from the presence of a foolish man, when thou perceivest not in him the lips of knowledge." (Proverbs 14:7) Foolish people give matching counsel. So what did God say to do? "Go from the presence of a foolish man..." Who has your ear? The people we listen to have influence in our lives. Build Your Bible Habit-Proverbs Chapter 15
Welcome back to Build Your Bible Habit! This week, Proverbs 15 opens the chapter with a lesson on the "soft answer." We need this lesson. When people speak to us harshly, it's human nature to want to respond the same way. Our carnal nature is not interested in godliness. It is human to have a classic case of "how dare they speak to me like that." When we tell someone off and imagine that it will settle things, instead this wrong move heats up the conversation until both sides are angry. God wants to help us fix this tendency. The solution? Learn the art of the soft answer. Godliness is rewarding to the soul, building humility and temperance. Here's a great verse for the week: "A soft answer turneth away wrath: but grievous words stir up anger." (Proverbs 15:1) Those sharp words you were tempted to use? Soften them. Welcome back to Build Your Bible Habit! One of the greatest habits you can develop for the health of your soul is to feed it daily from the Word of God. Just as the physical body needs nourishment, so does the soul. The 3rd chapter of Proverbs is full of instructions that guide and direct us in our daily living. In fact, the first two verses point us to the importance of remembering God's Word and living by it. "My son, forget not my law; but let thine heart keep my commandments: For length of days, and long life, and peace, shall they add to thee." (Proverbs 3:1-2) The benefits are "length of days, long life, and peace." These are priceless! Bible commentator Matthew Henry said this about Proverbs 3: 2: "As grace increases, peace shall increase..." Peace with God and others is a gift of God. Build Your Bible Habit-Proverbs Chapter 27
Welcome back to Build Your Bible Habit, where you can listen to a chapter of Proverbs in five minutes or less. The habit of feeding your soul from the Bible daily is like the habit of providing nourishment for the physical body. Just as junk food doesn't build strength, filling the mind with everything but the Bible leads to spiritual weaknesses. Building a daily Bible habit will build your wisdom and understanding. Read a chapter of Proverbs without skipping for 90 days and see how God speaks to you directly from His Word, teaching you how to handle matters wisely. You will appreciate the newfound strength! Read Proverbs 27 on the 27th, Proverbs 28 on the 28th, and so on. Keep this up, and you will grow in grace and knowledge of God, as well as developing a sound heart and mind. A great verse in Proverbs 27:17 focuses on our influence. We are all "influencers" in the lives of others, but is that a good thing or not? If we're living biblically, we are helping others to become spiritually "sharpened." "Iron sharpeneth iron; so a man sharpeneth the countenance of his friend." Build Your Bible Habit-Proverbs Chapter 31
Welcome back to Build Your Bible Habit, a series designed to help you develop a habit of daily Bible reading. Proverbs 31 is where we read about the "Proverbs 31 woman," also known as the "virtuous woman," but this chapter has wisdom for men and women. Here's a verse that is good for all of us: "She openeth her mouth with wisdom; and in her tongue is the law of kindness." (Proverbs 31:26) Words spoken in "the law of kindness" are easier to receive than words spoken in harshness. There are many opportunities to say the wrong thing, but if we'll open our mouths with wisdom, we'll avoid the messy cleanup that comes with ill-spoken words. Build Your Bible Habit-Proverbs Chapter 15
Welcome back to Proverbs Chapter 15 on Build Your Bible Habit. This chapter, like the rest of Proverbs, is filled with relationship verses. When we apply the verses to our daily interactions, we have better outcomes, but when we disregard the Word, we have more messes. Here's an example from Proverbs 15:1: "A soft answer turneth away wrath: but grievous words stir up anger." Application: We can tell when a conversation is becoming tense, so instead of increasing our volume or using a harsher tone to make our point, we turn down the volume and reduce the heat. Anyone can argue, but it takes godly character to master the art of the "soft answer." Even the practical takes practice. Apply: Living What We Learn by Francie Taylor NEW! Build Your Bible Habit-Proverbs Chapter 19
Welcome to Proverbs chapter 19 on Build Your Bible Habit. The theme of upright living is woven throughout this chapter, giving us principles to put into practice right away. If you haven’t started doing so, I suggest that you pray before listening to these Proverbs. Ask the Lord to show you what to work on from the chapter, and then watch for pop quizzes throughout your day. Remember, sometimes people are the "tests" in life. You will find yourself applying the Bible more to your everyday living as you continue to build your Bible habit. Verses will pop up on the screen of your mind, prompting you to pause and edit yourself, putting you in a position to have better outcomes in your relationships. Proverbs 19:11 is a perfect example of this, as it reminds us of this key relationship principle: "The discretion of a man deferreth his anger; and it is his glory to pass over a transgression." The next time someone does or says something that provokes you and you’re tempted to have a short fuse, pause and P.O.A.T.: Pass over a transgression. We love it when people do that for us. Teachback Tuesday-The Empty Chair and Other Firsts of Grief
Welcome to Teachback Tuesday, where we replay the most popular episodes from previous seasons. This episode, The Empty Chair and Other Firsts of Grief is approaching the 10,000 download mark, which tells us something we already knew: grief is an ongoing rotation in life. Some of us are in the roles of comforters, while others need comforting. When it's our turn to grieve, we experience how deeply life changes with the absence of a loved one. If this is your experience, you have an empty chair and all the changes that come with the grieving process. Many people may try to be supportive and caring, but eventually they do have to leave us and return to their own lives. When no one else is around, God will not leave us alone. He is the Comforter Who abides with us forever. Here's a verse that reminds us of this truth: "And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you for ever..." When We Don’t Want to Forgive
Have you ever dragged your feet on forgiving someone because you thought they deserved to suffer? Or were you so hurt by their words or actions that you felt they deserved punishment? Human nature is painful like that. We don’t like people to hurt us, but we’ll cancel that rule when we’re hurting someone in revenge. We’re not the first to struggle with the issue of not wanting to forgive. Consider this passage from Matthew 18:21-22: "Then came Peter to him, and said, Lord, how oft shall my brother sin against me, and I forgive him? till seven times? Jesus saith unto him, I say not unto thee, Until seven times: but, Until seventy times seven." This is not to make light of serious offenses, but trying to justify withholding forgiveness is asking for a battle with bitterness. This summer rerun shares four side effects of failing to grant forgiveness, and how we can avoid them.
