Jay Smith brings Nashville north with The Buckle
Kingston singer-songwriter, Jay Smith, built his career as a working musician regularly playing local venues, festivals, weddings, parties, and whatever other opportunities his efforts earned him. It's no surprise that "Smitty" also earned his reputation as one of Kingston's most beloved, respected and in-demand musical performers, whose recorded releases put him on a trajectory most songwriters would aspire to. Following the COVID-19 lockdowns that saw the shut-down of many Canadian live music venues, Jay Smith—with the clarity of over a decade of sobriety—chose to pursue his dream of opening his own music venue. On this episode, we explore how Smith's venue, The Buckle, has materialized his vision for a Nashville-inspired music venue in Kingston, and how it's transcended a reputation as a "country bar" to become a hub for both emerging local and touring musicians looking to catch their break.Episode creditsGuests:Jay Smith https://kingstonlive.ca/jay-smithHosts:Rob Howard [email protected] Stever [email protected]:Grand OnStage https://kingstonlive.ca/resource/1191525/viewMusic in this episode:Butterflies by Jay SmithLinks:Jay Smith https://kingstonlive.ca/jay-smithThe Buckle https://kingstonlive.ca/resource/1191669/viewTrailer Swift https://kingstonlive.ca/trailerswiftbandAbby Stewart https://kingstonlive.ca/abby-stewart Alexa Goldie https://kingstonlive.ca/alexa-goldieCourtney Kane https://kingstonlive.ca/courtneykaneLucas Oak https://kingstonlive.ca/official_lukas_oakBedouin Soundclash https://kingstonlive.ca/artist/17835/viewMiss Emily https://kingstonlive.ca/miss-emilyCory Marks http://www.corymarks.comThe Brass Pub https://kingstonlive.ca/the-brass-pubThe Royal Tavern 2.0 https://kingstonlive.ca/resource/1191657/viewKingston concerts and music festivals https://kingstonlive.ca/Audio production by Soundwise https://kingstonlive.ca/resource/1191590/viewSign up for Kingston music news, local concert and event listings and announcements delivered to your inbox monthly, weekly or even daily. How the Canadian Federation of Musicians is empowering artist-entrepreneurs
Whether you're a casual or career musician, or a live or recorded music consumer, you'll find this episode enlightening. Music is an industry, and being a professional musician is a trade. And, whether writing, recording or performing, musicians have rights and needs, just like other workers. Often navigating the industry on their own, many musicians experience mistreatment, poor pay and exploitation. On this episode, we're joined by Liana White of the Canadian Federation of Musicians, and Kingston musician Aruna Handa, a member of Local 518 of the Union of Professional Musicians. Together, they dispel union misperceptions; illustrate how membership keeps music fun, safe and rewarding for musicians; and answer questions, like what kind of musicians should join a union (and when)? They also detail how the Canadian Federation of Musicians and its American counterpart work together to help member musicians become better businesspeople, and help them travel across international borders for work.Host:Rob Howard [email protected]:Liana White, Canadian Federation of MusiciansAruna Handa, Union Of Professional Musicians AFM Local 518Links:Canadian Federation of Musicians https://cfmusicians.afm.orgAmerican Federation of Musicians https://www.afm.orgUnion Of Professional Musicians AFM Local 518 https://upmlocal518.orgAruna & The Sirens https://kingstonlive.ca/arunathesirensSOCAN http://socan.comRecording Industry Association of America https://www.riaa.comAmerican Association of Independent Musicians (A2IM) https://a2im.orgCanadian Independent Musicians Association (CIMA) Canadian Independent Musicians Alliance http://cimamusic.caFolk Alliance International https://www.folk.orgFolk Music Canada https://www.folkmusiccanada.orgKingston concerts and music festivals https://kingstonlive.ca/Audio production by Soundwise https://kingstonlive.ca/resource/1191590/viewSign up for Kingston music news, local concert and event listings and announcements delivered to your inbox monthly, weekly or even daily. Hawksley Workman on producing Wind Up/Let Go by Oakridge Ave.
Following a year-and-a-half process of writing and recording, Kingston's Oakridge Ave. finally released their new full-length album, Wind Up/Let Go, on September 15, 2023. Produced by the JUNO Award-winning Hawksley Workman, the new record was both a triumph and something transformative for everyone involved. Our hope for episode 59 (the previous episode) was to simultaneously interview Oakridge Ave. and Wind Up/Let Go producer Hawksley Workman about their collaboration. While the timing didn't work out for that interview, host Rob Howard was able to connect with Hawksley Workman ahead of the conversation with the band that followed. The discussion—presented here in this bonus episode—was spirited and enlightening, and fans of either Oakridge Ave. and Hawksley Workman will undoubtedly find it very interesting.Hosts:Rob Howard [email protected]:Hawksley Workman https://hawksleyworkman.comOakridge Ave. https://kingstonlive.ca/oakridge-aveKingston live music and festival listings https://kingstonlive.ca/Subscribe for live music listings by email https://kingstonlive.ca/subscribe Audio production by Soundwise http://soundwise.audioSign up for Kingston music news, local concert and event listings and announcements delivered to your inbox monthly, weekly or even daily.
