La Jolla Babylon: The Making Of A Suburban Punk
by Aaron Hartman
Your host, musician and writer Aaron Hartman, shares stories about his stormy youth growing up punk in a conservative beach town with his Millennial sister, actor, writer and comedian Katie Hartman. What emerges is a series of hilarious, poignant, and brutally honest weekly episodes that delve into the stark differences in their upbringings, despite being siblings.Aaron, a founding member and bass player of Northwest indie legends Old Time Relijun and electro dance-rock pioneers IQU, began writing his memoir in the back of a tour van. Years later, he reads these deeply personal stories to Katie, who, as a theater kid, had little knowledge of her much older half-brother’s rebellious life.Through Aaron’s raw, unfiltered stories and Katie’s humorous, insightful commentary, the podcast explores the generational divide between Gen X and Millennials, showcasing how two siblings from different households can grow up under radically different circumstances within the same family. Spartanburg
Chapter 67 Spartanburg The last episode of season 3! Keep us in your feed - we’ll pop up everyone once in a while with some bonus eps between now and season 4! We’ll see young Adam get in and out of trouble. And then in again. We’ll see post-adolescent Adam meet some fates. In this episode: Adam gets hired as a professional tour manager and breaks down in the buckle of the Bible Belt. A Baptist family tries real hard to convert him. First of all - when I wrote the conversations between Adam and Bishop, I was not considering that I would need to read his voice some day. What you’re hearing is a white guy from the west coast - who is not an actor - trying to change his voice just enough so the listener knows the character has changed. When I switch to a character that is not Adam, I am only trying to indicate that the voice is from the south. I am not trying to indicate the person is of another race. This is Aaron being a bad reader with a shitty southern accent. NOT Aaron doing “black voice.” I love this episode and I love the people I met in Spartanburg so many years ago. It was 72 hours that changed my life for the better and if there’s a microbe that comes across as disrespectful, I apologize sincerely. Please write in to [email protected] and let me know how I should have handled it. Or write me and I’ll dish more about that band I managed. The You-Know-What Episode
The You-Know-What Episode Chapters 64 WOLFIE 65 DEPARTMENT OF CORRECTIONS 66 FILMMAKING Explicit content. In other words, another one the in-laws might want to skip. Adam makes a Porn for college credit. In which Aaron miraculously gets out of reading in front of people. This is a recorded version of what our live show could have been. When it’s time to move out of a small town, it’s really time to move! “I’m not self aware enough to know what cartoon animal I would have been.” Some of my favorite fake live albums: Nighthawks at the Diner Beach Boys Party! Charles Mingus presents Charles Mingus - asking waitresses not to rattle the ice! I was always singing the Nutcracker, so my dad got me the album for my 7th birthday. But when I saw the word “ballet” on the jacket, I asked if I could switch it for another record. We went back to Sam Goody’s and I was able to exchange it for KISS Alive 2! Apparently the drummer was so drunk they had to re-record the entire album and add the live sounds later. My explanation of Annie Sprinkle comes from memory - apologies if I missed some important details. Here’s a bit more about Linda/Les and Annie https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0104733/ Shout out to the Olympia International Film Festival! Don’t fact check me on whether Holy Mountain and El Topo were really banned in the US. Everybody But Me Wang Chunged That Night
Everybody But Me Wang Chunged That Night Chapters: 62 KURU 63 TWO QUICK THINGS Aaron dishes about getting kicked out of the band he thought was going to make him a rock star. Altogether now: “It was the 90s.” Afraid of being an “unreliable narrator” - Aaron asks Katie not to let him off the hook. As the stories get closer to modern day, it’s getting less cute to hear about Adam and his bad choices. As Katie says, “If you’re looking for someone to dress you down, I think you should pull our other siblings in here.” Aaron talks about the metaphor that saves his relationship. Some other notable quotes: “Sometimes the best thing to do is to do nothing” “The man who edits controls the knowledge” Correction: It’s the PRESIDENTS of the United States of America. But you knew that. **Update! We chose not to air another episode. This is going to be a pretty short season! These stories can sometimes cut a little close to the bone, and we felt like what would have been episode 5 might be pushing too far into other peoples’ lives. It was a good one but we decided to err on the side of privacy. Email us a [email protected] if you want to know more (we’ll tell you everything privately). The end of Dan Jones. Friend break-ups are the hardest. Katie and Aaron talk ADHD. **Update! We chose not to air the episode Aaron describes at the end of this one. Adam meets someone special in the bathroom. In this bonus episode, Aaron tells a true story in which he sees a ghost and then teases Katie for believing in ghosts. Big brother/ little sister dynamic! Betwixt Season Episode- The Music of La Jolla Babylon
This week we’re taking a break from our usual narration and charming sibling banter while we finish up season two.Today’s mini episode is going to be a little different. We’ve put together a playlist of all the music we’ve heard so far on La Jolla Babylon. Here is a link to almost all the music: Marine Layer I wrote the bulk of these chapters in cafes and was constantly distracted by whatever the baristas were playing. And since to me, there’s no such thing as background music, I made my own to help me concentrate. Most of the songs you’ll be listening to are from the collection of music I’ve recorded called Marine Layer: Music to Block Out Other Music. A few songs are from a new record I’m working on of background music for parties.I play all the instruments except on a song called Let’s Go. On that one, guitar is by Arrington de Dionyso, the vibes are played by Walker Spring and that’s Lisa Shonberg on the drums. There are no distracting lyrics, just some la las. This is not music you’re supposed to listen to, it’s meant to be in the background, taking up as little space in your mind as possible while you do other things. Please enjoy these songs and if you want, head on over to band camp and stream or download them for free at your leisure. Thanks so much for listening to our fucking podcast and check your feed for season 2 - it’s almost ready for you!Katie and I would like to thank you for all for your support for this first season of La Jolla Babylon! We would love to hear from you! La Jolla BabylonChapter:26 La Jolla BabylonIn this episode, Adam and Dan Jones want to be able to leave any party and have more fun. Roaming the beach at night yields unexpected gifts. In what turns out to be what Katie calls a “classic Southern California gen-X stand-by-me beach situation”.Katie also coins the phrase “pity bra”.Music: La Jolla Babylon Theme by Aaron HartmanVocal: Alicia Jo Rabins @ohaliciajo | aliciajo.comDrums: Sara Lund @lundun_calling | saralundrum.comAdditional music: Dibble Dabble by Marine Layer https://marinelayer.bandcamp.com/album/no-room-music-to-block-out-other-musicLinks:Follow Katie Hartman at https://www.katiehartman.rocks/https://www.davidandkatiegetremarried.com/

Let’s meet my stepfather, shall we?Chapter titles17 Gene18 Gradual19 ConfidentialIt’s stepfather time! Adam’s mom gets swept off her feet. We get an origin story and a good ole 1980s-era scare-the-parents institution tries to convince Adam’s parents that he’s on the wrong path. He probably was. Katie does her best to get Aaron to admit that he’s petty.Three chapters of fun!#latchkeykid, #genx, #generationx #millennialwisdom, #empathy, #humor, #divorce, #truestories, #siblings, #half-siblings, #artschool, #seminar, #schoolbus, #rehab, #stepdad, #ihatemystep, #quacks, #1980s, #hoteldel, #scaredstraight, #notreally, #middleschool, #jrhigh, #sandiego, #socal, #ruinous, #teensLinks:Follow Katie Hartman at https://www.katiehartman.rocks/ https://www.davidandkatiegetremarried.com/Music:La Jolla Babylon Theme by Aaron HartmanVocal: Alicia Jo Rabins @ohaliciajo | aliciajo.com Drums: Sara Lund @lundun_calling | saralundrum.comAdditional music: “Let’s Go” By Aaron HartmanDrums - Lisa Schonberg - https://www.lisaschonberg.com/ | https://www.instagram.com/ lisaannschonberg/Vibes - A. Fuzzy Strawberries and Watermelon Men
Fuzzy Strawberries and Watermelon MenChapters:14 Fuzzy Strawberries 15 Transfer16 Watermelon MenQuick note: Aaron’s daughter has given permission to talk about the fact that she had lice. Her reasoning was, “No one’s going to listen to this, so it doesn’t really matter.” Point taken. It’s an #ifyouknowyouknow kind of episode. Adam talks his way into advanced band and learns that some people do actually hear the bass - not in a good way. Some mafia- infused family lore and Terry leaves something in Adam’s grandmother’s apartment. Katie says, “We were raised so differently” - not for the last time.Three groovy chapters.#latchkeykid, #genx, #generationx #millennialwisdom, #empathy, #humor, #divorce, #truestories, #siblings, #half-siblings, #artschool, #seminar, #mafia, #twoversionsofthesamesong, #band, #advancedband, #funnygrandma, #muirlands, LaJollaHigh, #memoir,Links:Follow Katie Hartman at https://www.katiehartman.rocks/ https://www.davidandkatiegetremarried.com/Music:La Jolla Babylon Theme by Aaron HartmanVocal: Alicia Jo Rabins @ohaliciajo | aliciajo.com Drums: Sara Lund @lundun_calling | saralundrum.comAdditional music:“New as of Now” https://marinelayer.bandcamp.com/album/new-as-of-now

I'm In Charge Now
I’m in charge now.Chapter titles:1 Extra sensory 2 Undelivered 3 Me time4 First cupsWelcome to the first episode of La Jolla Babylon Season One - The Making Of A Suburban Punk! A weekly podcast that's gonna go something like this: Katie and Aaron talk for a few minutes. Katie (and the audience) listen to a few chapters of Aaron’s book about his unsupervised, Gen X youth. Then they discuss. Katie is emotional but mostly empathetic and funny. In these first chapters of Aaron's lightly fictionalized memoir, his avatar "Adam" is told he might have special powers; his new stepmother makes an error in judgement; the garage bears gifts and his father shares something that will stay with Adam for the rest of his life. ABOUT THIS SHOW
Your host, musician and writer Aaron Hartman, shares stories about his stormy youth growing up punk in a conservative beach town with his Millennial sister, actor, writer and comedian Katie Hartman.
