    Mr Picklesworth's Power Hour 2

All tracks taken from a wonderful mixtape by Jay Buckwold. Jay is a long time member of the Pacific Bluegrass and Heritage Society — probably the founder or at least the president at some point. He also ran the bluegrass camp in Sorrento for many years. Jay plays a great version of Fresh Fish on the banjo, which sent me searching for a digital copy or otherwise. I couldn’t find it, so Jay gave me this tape. I love it and I listen to it every day on the way to work — my car has a tape deck...doesn't yours? Several of these tracks are hard to find digital copies of, so here you go. Pared down from the original 90 minutes to about 60 — if you want to hear the whole thing you'll have to ask Jay. It took some prying out of my fingers, but he eventually got his tape back. --------------------------- Tracklist --------------------------- Fresh Fish - Steve Keith Bluegrass Express - Osbornes Bang You're Alive - Scruggs - Flatt Nashville Skyline Rag - Denis Lepage Two Twenties - Bill Keith Oh Susannah - Larry McNeely With Care From Someone - D.Dillard Sledd Ride - Danny Menzone (Traver Hollow) Top of the World - Earl Scruggs Whole World Round - Dillards Tennesse Breakdown - Herb Pedersen Eddie on the Freeway - Country Gentlemen Hearts Overflowing - Seldon Scene Clinch Mt. AK45: I Remember - Gospel

The long overdue sequel to the 07/07/07 mix. "I Remember" keeps things gospel, an oft-overlooked genre that I became acquainted with through my love of soul music. Many of the early soul artists started out in gospel, and "went secular." Artists like Ray Charles didn't even bother to change the music, singing secular lyrics over gospel standards. "God" simply became "you babe." As I wind my way through this genre, I never stop being surprised just how diverse the sound can be. Gospel aint just church organ and choir. Gospel-funk, gospel-jazz, gospel-rock, rockin-gospel-anti-rock, gospel-disco, modern-soul-gospel, there's plenty of stuff to love, and hate, within the genre. "I Remember" isn't so much about representing the diverse limits of the gospel genre (perhaps another mix?) as it is about blending together the finest examples of this vast genre that I could find. I hope you enjoy it. See http://www.ak45.com/iremember for a full track breakdown and pics.

    AK45: Halloween 2011

Well what can I say? This year was nucking futs. Easily a couple hundred people. At 3:00am, there were buses coming from downtown, completely full of people in costume heading to "that villa party." Was it out of hand? I can't decide that for everyone. Some people loved it, others thought it was way too crowded. At the peak, the dance floor was strictly "do the minnow" room only. Amazingly no cops were called. They stopped by once on a routine drive by to note, "that's way too many people on the roof." A valid point. I've got no idea what the load capacity of the villa roof is, and I'm not interested in pushing it to failure. As usual, a couple "aspiring DJs"/drunken assholes kept fucking with the DJ gear. You can hear one of them banging away on the piano, and being ejected at exactly 45:10 in the mix. The other guy, after his second warning, said "I do it because I love you man." Fair enough. Roommates Brad and Greg helped with DJing, and DJ GoreMay. Brad and GoreMay bookend this year's mix. Thanks to everyone who attended, for the good times, great costumes, and good spirits. As always. --------------------------- Tracklist --------------------------- AK45 Set: ZZafrika - ZZT Off the Wall (Tradelove Remix) - The Black Project Shave It - Zedd The Legend of Zelda - Zedd Rattle - Bingo Players Party Rock Anthem - LMFAO Rumble In the Jungle - ZEDS DEAD You've Got the Love - Florence and the Machine This is Halloween - Figure Undah Yuh Skirt (feat Mavado) - ZEDS DEAD I.D.G.A.F.O.S. - Dillon Francis Barbramyte (DJs from Mars Remix) - Duck Sauce vs. Taio Cruz Big Al Downing - The Georgia Slop Wynonie Harris - Quiet Harris El Camino Real - Lee Dresser Bonkers - Dizzie Rascal 9000 - Carl Tricks GoreMay Set: Big Bad Wolf - Duck Sauce Bounce (all I do is party) - MSTRKRT Feat N.O.R.E.

AK45: Side B - Roll Out - Jump Blues and Rock

I'm all about the cassette tape right now. My car has a cassette player, and instead of trying to circumvent it with tape adapters and FM transmitters, I'm embracing the technology. I bought a Nakamichi DR-2 recorder and hit up the thrift stores for blank tapes. I love the process of going from vinyl, to digital, to tape. It's a great marriage of technologies, and in the end I get to hold something. This mix is 30 minutes per side, perfect for a 60 minute blank tape. Dub it to tape, pop it in the car, and drive mother drive! Or, you can buy a cassette from me and it will be the best possible quality: straight from 48 KHz 24 Bit digital audio, through the Nakamichi, to tape. Every copy is a master! Plus it'll be super personalized n' shit. But enough about the medium, onto the message: Jump Blues and Rock. The mix touches on a lot of different genres, from jump blues to 50s rock to rockabilly to garage to gospel, but if I had to peg down a common thread, I'd say it's music that MOVES. A bit about the cover picture: Careless Whisper and Kenny G likely have damaged the legitimacy of the saxophone beyond repair, but if we go back to 1948, we can see how the instrument was supposed to be played. Big Jay McNeely killing. --------------------------- Side B Tracklist --------------------------- Big Al Downing - The Georgia Slop Lowell Fulsom - Lovin' Touch Lee Dresser - El Camino Real Wynonie Harris - Quiet Whiskey Evelyn Freeman - Didn't It Rain Jimmy Liggins - I Aint Drunk Lightnin' Slim - Just Made 21 Joe Lutcher - Ojai Mark Murphy - Why Don't You Do Right Liz Green - Bad Medicine

    AK45: Noche Cubana

All tracks are from records I picked up in Cuba in 2009. While not my primary purpose for my trip, I had a few titles in mind. Happening upon a Frank Emilio with Tata Guines record in Havana, I excitedly asked the market vendor where I could find more like this. A phone call and "local's taxi" car ride later -- it's courtesy and expected for car owners to pack their car with waiting locals, but illegal for tourists -- put me deep in Centro Habana, in a broken down home powered by a single light bulb. But he had the goods, the "crema, crema, CREMA", he'd shake his head and say whenever I pulled out a promising title. I only had room in my pack for about a dozen, and on those I did bring back, I spent a couple hours per record scrubbing the grime away. Some of the records are a little scratchy, but like the country itself, this just adds character. See http://www.buildering.net/podcast/cuba for trip pictures. AK45: Old Man Me (Deep Soul)

Nothing but the best in this one. The problem with collecting records, especially rare 45s, is that you always want to find that one elusive track before putting a mix together. And while you're looking for that one, you find something else that you must have. Then there's the 45s that are so rare and expensive that you'll never get your hands on them, short of winning the lottery. Anyway, I've amassed at least a couple of hours of must-hear singles to share with y'all. For this one, I'm keeping things in the deep soul genre, with a few northern tracks thrown in to spice things up. After the holidays I'll put together a stompin' northern soul stormer, a rockabilly rager, and a groovy gamut of gospel -- just gotta fill out the collection a little more. Merry Christmas from the Ardster! AK45: Halloween '10

I don't know what's more fun, the Halloween party, or right NOW, Nov 21, 5:12pm. I'm drunk as f*ck on high-end scotch, listening to this year's mix bounce to disk, and pulling FB photos of some damn sexy people dressed amazingly. I love the world right now. This would certainly qualify as drink-n-blog, but whatevs. This has got to be the longest running kickass halloween party of all time. Every year I'm worried that it has jumped the proverbial shark, and every year at precisely 11:48pm on day of said party, I'm like, "Who was that little bitch who was worried two hours ago? This is off the chain-hook!" Why can't every day be Halloween? Maybe in Ibiza. Can I be Frankie Wilde when I grow up? Or his nemesis, the evil Coke Badger? So anyway like I mentioned earlier I'm drunk drunk drunk and have decided to forgo punctuation at this point so it's probably best to let the music and photos speak for themselves -The Coke Badger Tracklist --------------------------- I Put A Spell On You - Screamin' Jay Hawkins She's Looking Good - Rodger Collins Turn On Your Love Light - Andre Odom 25 Miles - Edwin Starr See Me Through - XXXchange Bad Gal (Crookers Remix) - Savage Skulls Douster Knockin Boots - Torro Torro Barbra Streisand - Duck Sauce Mr. Spock - Ardalan Nuttin A Go So - RCola Warhead (Ram Trilogy Rmx) - DJ Krust Beautiful People Party Break - DJA Cruel Intentions (Joker Remix) - Simian Mobile Disco Human - The Killers Human Nature (Pure P Retouch) - Michael Jackson

Once again, thanks to everyone who came out to biggest and best Halloween house party in all of Marpole -- at least that's what the creepy "neighbors" said (who I later caught stealing my beer). Sorry I didn't get a chance to catch up with each of you. The live mix from the night sounded like it was under water due to dusty needles. Apparently Serato is finicky about such things. So I redid the mix, it's the same songs from the night but pared down to around one hour. Thanks to everyone who attended to this year's party. The costumes were amazing as usual. Lots of dancing, fire-breathing, motorbike stunts, and other such debauchery. The cops only came 3 times this year! This mix is a pared down version from the 3 hours or so that I DJed. Masaro's set wasn't retrievable due to a bad channel on his mixer (that's the last time we ever try a mixer switch).
