While he's waiting he notices that a few people seem to freeze up for a moment and then move on as if nothing has happened. Smokey and Huxley get back from registration, which they didn't actual do, and they swap information. Things are definitely off so they think it might be best to leave as soon as the suits are charged. In the meantime they go to find Lily to try and get more information. We notice a few more people that seem to freeze up. We get the sense that they are acting like users. Lily says that things were kind of bad and some people left and the rest have been cowtowed. Imagery from half-recalled entries in my grandfather’s faux leather-bound Time/Life “The Old West” series featuring The Gunfighters. How worn the cover had gotten, as the desperate paws of my older cousins clawed in their frenzied way, tearing through what otherwise might have formed a coherent reference in some homework assignment, but long before the pictures and entries regarding Billy the Kid and select others had been sliced from their resting pages (probably with Grandma’s fabric scissors) to be reapplied with Scotch tape elsewhere. Alas, those gunslingers were no longer found in that old Time/Life book. But you’ll find some of folk history’s most beloved villains in this one. He notices Huxley's uneasiness and says that everything is ok, let bygones be bygones.
