Why Capitalism Beats Socialism | TWE 181
Americans are losing faith in capitalism, but much of what gets blamed on free markets comes from government intervention. In TWE 181, I explain why capitalism beats socialism through economic freedom, competition, prices, profit and loss, and decentralized decision-making. More government control won’t fix problems government helped create. The strongest answer to socialism isn’t another slogan. Let people experience economic freedom.Subscribe, rate, and share This Week’s Economy. Find my work at VanceGinn.com and subscribe to Let People Prosper.

Data Center Wars and Future of AI Policy with Adam Thierer | LPP 215
Adam Thierer returns to the Let People Prosper Show to discuss one of America's biggest economic and policy questions: Will we build the infrastructure and preserve the freedom needed to lead the AI revolution?Adam is Resident Senior Fellow for Technology and Innovation at the R Street Institute and a leading advocate of permissionless innovation. We discuss data-center restrictions, energy abundance, AI and jobs, competition with China, age verification and online safety, and whether policymakers are repeating past technopanics by trying to regulate emerging technologies before understanding their potential. The central lesson is simple: America’s greatest technological advantage is our freedom to experiment, invest, compete, fail, and try again.Read the show notes and subscribe at VanceGinn.Substack.com.#AI #Innovation #DataCenters #EconomicFreedom #LetPeopleProsper

Policies That Make (or Break) Work and Prosperity | TWE 180
Happy Labor Day! Today we recognize and honor the contributions of American workers. But it’s also worth remembering why work itself matters. Work helps us provide for ourselves and our families. But it’s about more than a paycheck. Work provides dignity, purpose, opportunity, and the satisfaction of creating something valuable.Public policy can either make that work more rewarding or make it harder for Americans to get ahead. In today’s episode of This Week’s Economy, we’ll look beyond the headline unemployment rate to examine what workers are really experiencing, how Washington’s $40 trillion debt and Federal Reserve policy affect prosperity, and why debates over data centers, social media, and even the “common good” ultimately come back to a fundamental question: Are we giving people more freedom to prosper or are we putting government in their way? How Capitalism Creates Abundance | TWE 179
Scarcity is part of life. But free people have an extraordinary ability to overcome it.In TWE 179, I explain how free-market capitalism creates abundance through prices, entrepreneurship, competition, innovation, and human ingenuity. From Julian Simon's famous wager to housing, energy, healthcare, AI, and data centers, the lesson is similar: controlling prices doesn't create more supply.Capitalism doesn't eliminate scarcity or guarantee that every price falls. Instead, it creates a discovery process that gives people incentives to solve problems and produce more. The question policymakers should ask isn't simply, “How can government make this cheaper?”It's “What's preventing people from producing more?”#Capitalism #Economics #FreeMarkets #EconomicFreedom

Tax Cuts Need Spending Cuts with Dr. Adam Michel | LPP 213
Tax cuts can strengthen incentives to work, save, invest, and build. But what happens when Washington cuts one tax while raising tariffs and continues spending beyond taxpayers’ means?Dr. Adam Michel of the Cato Institute joins me to discuss why tax reform and spending restraint must go together. We examine tariffs, deficits, reconciliation, entitlement spending, business investment, and what a simpler, flatter, more pro-growth tax system could look like. The goal isn't simply lower tax rates. It's reducing the overall burden the government places on Americans and creating an economy where people have greater freedom to prosper.Get show notes at vanceginn.substack.com.#TaxPolicy #Economics #FederalSpending #FreeMarkets

Five Ways States Can Make Life More Affordable | TWE 178
Scarcity is natural, but abundance can be created. In this episode, I explain why free-market capitalism has been so effective at turning scarce resources into greater prosperity. From Julian Simon’s famous wager to housing, energy, healthcare, AI, and data centers, the same economic lesson keeps appearing: prices communicate scarcity, entrepreneurs respond to opportunity, and competition encourages people to produce more.Markets aren't perfect, and capitalism doesn't guarantee every price will fall. But government price controls and restrictions often manage scarcity rather than solve it.The better question for policymakers is: What is preventing people from producing more?Listen to learn why human ingenuity, economic freedom, and market signals remain some of our greatest tools for creating abundance. The New Right’s Wrong Turn on Economics with Dr. Paul Mueller | LPP 212
The political left and right increasingly agree on one dangerous idea: Washington should direct more of the economy.Industrial policy, tariffs, subsidies, and economic nationalism are being sold as ways to rebuild manufacturing, strengthen families, and make America more prosperous. But replacing market decisions with political direction does not create prosperity. It concentrates power, protects favored industries, and forces families and businesses to pay the bill. That is the focus of my conversation with Dr. Paul Mueller, Senior Research Fellow and Director of Defending Freedom and Combatting Collectivism at the American Institute for Economic Research. Paul studies entrepreneurship, economic growth, monetary economics, and political economy. He also hosts AIER’s The Economist Next Door, which brings economic ideas to everyday Americans. We discuss his AIER paper examining the New Right’s growing embrace of industrial policy, protectionism, and government-directed investment.🎧 Listen, Like, and Subscribe on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, or YouTube.🌐 Learn more at vanceginn.com📩 Subscribe at vanceginn.substack.com

Back to School and a Return to the School Choice Debate | TWE 177
More than 274,000 Texas families applied for Education Freedom Accounts this year. Parents are sending policymakers a clear message: they want more choices for their children. In this episode, I explain how Education Savings Accounts empower families, why funding should follow students, how competition can improve education while encouraging greater efficiency, and why states should lead instead of Washington.Educational freedom isn't about protecting one type of school. It's about giving every child the opportunity to succeed.Listen now and read my new educational freedom policy guide at VanceGinn.com.

Why Markets Work and Central Planning Fails with Dr. Abigail Hall | LPP 211
Economics is often reduced to numbers and policy debates. But its deeper question is simple: How can people peacefully cooperate to improve their lives? That is the focus of my latest conversation with Abigail R. Hall, professor of economics at the University of Tampa, Senior Fellow with the Independent Institute, and Senior Affiliated Scholar with the Mercatus Center.Abby joined me to discuss her new book with , Austrian Economics: An Introduction. Debunking the Myth That Capitalism Exploits Workers | TWE 176
Free-market capitalism is often portrayed as a system that exploits workers, enriches the powerful, and leaves ordinary people behind. Critics argue it rewards greed over people and creates opportunity only for those already at the top. The message is repeated so often that many simply accept it as fact. But what if the opposite is true? In today's episode of This Week's Economy, we're examining one of the most overlooked ideas in economics: how free markets uplift everyday people. We'll explore how free-market capitalism disperses economic power across millions of individuals instead of concentrating it in the hands of government, creating opportunities for workers, entrepreneurs, and consumers alike. Rather than promising equal outcomes, free markets create the conditions for greater opportunity, rising living standards, and the freedom to build a better life.Listen to the full episode on YouTube, Apple Podcasts, or Spotify, and visit my website for more information about Ginn Economic Consulting.

How Inflation Hurts Families with Dr. Jeffrey Degner | LPP 210
Inflation is usually discussed as a policy problem, but families experience it as a daily burden that changes how they save, spend, plan, and build their lives. It shows up at the grocery store, in rent and mortgage payments, in childcare costs, in interest rates, and in the growing feeling that even when people work hard, they are still falling behind. But inflation does more than raise prices. It changes behavior. That is why I enjoyed this conversation with Dr. Jeffrey L. Degner, Research Fellow in Economics and Economic Freedom at the American Institute for Economic Research. Jeff is the author of Inflation and the Family, which challenges the common view that inflation is just a macroeconomic variable. His work shows how inflation reshapes household decision-making, weakens institutions, shortens time horizons, and erodes the foundations families need to plan and thrive. Before joining AIER, Jeff spent years in education, from high school to higher education, and most recently served as Dean of the School of Business at Cornerstone University. His research brings together economics, history, and moral philosophy to explain why sound money matters beyond markets. It matters for families.🎧 Listen to the full episode on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, or YouTube.🌐 Learn more about my work at vanceginn.com📩 Subscribe for weekly analysis at vanceginn.substack.com

From Record Home Prices to Record Startups | TWE 175
Why does everything still feel so expensive? In this week's episode of This Week's Economy, I connect the dots between inflation, tariffs, housing, the Federal Reserve, and entrepreneurship to explain why affordability remains the defining economic issue facing American families. The lesson is simple: affordability isn't created by government spending more. It's created by policies that expand production, encourage investment, and let people prosper.

We discuss ESG, financial regulation, corporate governance, and why policymakers should focus on clear, predictable rules instead of using private markets to advance political goals.Free enterprise depends on competition, accountability, and the rule of law—not politics disguised as markets.Subscribe for more conversations on economics, policy, and freedom.Visit vanceginn.com and subscribe to my newsletter at vanceginn.substack.com.

How Much is Your State Spending? | TWE 174
Government spending should not grow faster than the people paying for it.In this episode of This Week’s Economy, I examine the latest Sustainable Budget Project results and compare state spending growth with the responsible benchmark of population growth plus inflation.Only eight states kept state-funded spending within that limit over the past decade, while just three, Colorado, North Dakota, and Texas, met the standard for both state-funded and total spending. Meanwhile, states such as California, Illinois, Minnesota, New Jersey, and New York allowed spending to grow far beyond taxpayers’ means. We also look at the federal government, where spending increased 81.9% over the decade compared with sustainable growth of only 32.4%.These numbers matter because spending drives taxes, debt, and future economic opportunity. Responsible budgeting creates room for lasting tax relief, stronger reserves, and greater prosperity.Listen now and learn how your state compares. Politics Needs More Humility with Dr. Lauren Hall | LPP 208
Too much of modern politics is built on false choices. Left or right. Win or lose. Good or bad. My side or your side. That may work for cable news, campaign fundraising, and social media algorithms, but it does not work well for families, communities, or good policymaking. Real life is more complicated than our political categories allow. That is why I enjoyed this conversation with Dr. Lauren Hall, Professor of Political Science and Associate Dean at the Rochester Institute of Technology. Lauren’s work sits at the intersection of political theory, human behavior, healthcare regulation, family, culture, and real-world decision-making. She is the author of The Medicalization of Birth and Death and Family and the Politics of Moderation. She also writes at Radical Moderate’s Guide to Life, where she challenges the binary thinking that dominates politics and culture. Her idea of radical moderation is not about being weak, vague, or halfway between two bad options. It is about taking complexity seriously. It means recognizing tradeoffs, respecting pluralism, and admitting that no political tribe has a monopoly on truth.🎧 Listen to the full episode on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, or YouTube.🌐 Learn more about my work at vanceginn.com📩 Subscribe for weekly analysis at vanceginn.substack.com

The Rising Price Tag on Bad Policy | TWE 173
Every government policy has a cost. Sometimes it appears through higher prices and debt. Other times it means fewer homes, weaker job growth, distorted investment, or billions lost to fraud. In Episode 173, I examine the labor market, inflation-adjusted wages, housing policy, federal overspending, Texas’s economic model, tariffs, corporate welfare, and healthcare fraud. The path to prosperity is not more political control. America's Data Center Debate Is Really About Our Future | This Week's Economy Ep. 172
Across the country, a growing backlash is forming against data centers. Anti-growth proponents and NIMBYs (Not In My Backyard activists) are working to block the very infrastructure that powers artificial intelligence, cloud computing, and the digital services Americans rely on every day. The Economist had a good write-up on data centers. But America will not stop needing these technologies. If we make it harder to build data centers here, that infrastructure will simply be built somewhere else.In today’s episode of This Week’s Economy, we’ll examine why data centers matter, address some of the most common concerns surrounding them, and explain why restricting this critical infrastructure threatens economic growth, energy innovation, and America’s ability to remain a global leader in technology.Catch the full episode on YouTube, Apple Podcasts, or Spotify, get show notes at vanceginn.substack.com, and visit my website for more information about Ginn Economic Consulting.

The Forgotten Document That Shaped American Liberty with Dr. Daniel Dreisbach | LPP 206
July 4th has passed, but the real work of preserving liberty never ends. It is easy to celebrate independence with fireworks, flags, and family gatherings. But it is harder to understand the principles that made independence meaningful in the first place. America was not founded merely as a break from British rule. It was founded on the belief that rights are not gifts from government, power must be limited, and liberty requires institutions strong enough to restrain those who govern. That is why I enjoyed this conversation with Dr. Daniel L. Dreisbach, a professor at American University specializing in American constitutional law and history, First Amendment law, and church-state relations. Daniel earned a D.Phil. from the University of Oxford as a Rhodes Scholar and a J.D. from the University of Virginia. He has authored or edited ten books, written widely on constitutional principles, and has been recognized as American University’s Scholar/Teacher of the Year. Our conversation focuses on one of the most important but often overlooked documents in American history: the Virginia Declaration of Rights. It came before the Constitution, influenced the Bill of Rights, and helped define the language of liberty that shaped the American experiment.🎧 Listen to the full episode on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, or YouTube.🌐 Learn more about my work at vanceginn.com📩 Subscribe for weekly analysis at vanceginn.substack.com

Why Do Free Societies Innovate More? | TWE 171
Too many people express skepticism about capitalism while enjoying the countless innovations it has produced every day. The smartphones in our pockets, life-saving medicines, online services, modern transportation, and countless other conveniences that make life easier did not appear by accident. They were created by people who had the freedom and incentive to take risks, solve problems, and improve upon existing ideas. In today’s episode of This Week’s Economy, we’ll take a closer look at innovation and why free markets encourage people to experiment, invest, and develop new technologies that improve our quality of life. America’s 250-Year Test with Dr. Samuel Gregg | LPP 205
America is approaching its 250th birthday, and that should mean more than fireworks, speeches, and nostalgia. It should make us ask a harder question: Do we still understand what made the American experiment different? The United States did not become prosperous because government officials directed the economy from Washington. It became exceptional because our institutions protected liberty, property, voluntary exchange, civil society, religious freedom, and the rule of law. Those principles gave free people room to work, build, trade, worship, raise families, and solve problems in ways no central planner could design. That is why I enjoyed this conversation with Samuel Gregg, President of the American Institute for Economic Research. Four American Values That Built a Nation | This Week's Economy Ep. 170
America is preparing to celebrate 250 years since the Declaration of Independence. But the best way to honor the Founders is not just to celebrate the past. It is to preserve the principles that made liberty and prosperity possible. In this episode of This Week’s Economy, I discuss four American values that built the nation: strong property rights, upward mobility, innovation, and freedom of speech. These principles are still being tested today through property taxes, rising costs, regulatory barriers, antitrust debates, AI policy, and threats to free expression. The lesson is clear: America prospers when we trust free people more than centralized power.Find more at https://vanceginn.com.

The Parent Revolution Is Just Getting Started with Dr. Corey DeAngelis | LPP 204
Parents are tired of being told to sit down, be quiet, and trust the system. They saw what happened during school shutdowns. They saw what their kids were being taught. They saw learning loss, political agendas, falling standards, and too many excuses from education bureaucracies. And parents started asking a basic question: Why should children be trapped in schools that do not serve them? That is why I enjoyed this conversation with Dr. Corey DeAngelis, one of the nation’s leading voices for school choice and parental rights. Corey is the author of The Parent Revolution: Rescuing Your Kids from the Radicals Ruining Our Schools and has been one of the most effective advocates for letting education dollars follow students, not systems. Why Work Supports Prosperity | This Week's Economy Ep. 169
The surest path to prosperity is a job. Work provides more than a paycheck—it offers dignity, purpose, and the chance to build crucial skills and relationships. Unfortunately, government policies too often make it harder for people to work, hire, and adapt to changing economic realities. From occupational licensing and other labor regulations to outdated rules that fail to reflect today’s workforce, barriers to work can limit opportunity and economic mobility. In today’s episode of This Week’s Economy, we’ll explore how policy shapes labor markets, why the nature of work is changing, and what policymakers can do to remove barriers so more Americans can work, earn, and prosper.Catch the full episode on YouTube, Apple Podcasts, or Spotify, and visit my website at vanceginn.com for more information about Ginn Economic Consulting and show notes.

Politics Needs Fewer Tribes and More Humans with Dr. Lura Forcum | LPP 203
Politics has become too angry, too tribal, and too disconnected from real life. Too many people are tired of being forced into red or blue boxes. They are tired of politicians treating disagreement like war. They are tired of the media, campaigns, and algorithms rewarding outrage over understanding. That’s why I enjoyed this conversation with Dr. Lura Forcum, who writes at How to Human on Substack. Lura studies people, politics, and persuasion. She brings a rare mix of policy experience, consumer psychology, communications strategy, and practical wisdom about why voters think the way they do. And her message is timely: if we want better politics, we need to understand people better. Recession Myths Are Making Bad Policy Worse with Dr. Tyler Goodspeed | LPP 202
Everyone wants to know when the next recession is coming. Wall Street watches every data release. Politicians blame their opponents. The Federal Reserve tries to read the tea leaves. And too many commentators treat recessions as if they are an inevitable punishment after a long expansion. But what if much of that conventional wisdom is wrong? In this episode of the Let People Prosper Show, I’m joined by Dr. Tyler Goodspeed, Chief Economist at ExxonMobil and an adjunct scholar at the Cato Institute, to discuss his new book, Recession: The Real Reasons Economies Shrink and What to Do about It.Tyler brings a rare combination of economic history, macroeconomic expertise, and real-world policymaking experience. He served as Chair of the White House Council of Economic Advisers during the first Trump administration and previously served as Vice Chairman and Chief Economist for Macroeconomic Policy. We overlapped during my time at the White House Office of Management and Budget, where these debates were not academic. They shaped real decisions affecting millions of Americans. With dual PhDs in economics and history, Tyler has the long-run perspective needed to challenge the easy stories politicians tell about downturns. The goal should not be for the government to micromanage the economy. The goal should be to understand what actually causes downturns, avoid making them worse, and build the conditions for stronger long-run growth.🌐 Learn more about my work at vanceginn.com📩 Subscribe for show notes at vanceginn.substack.com

Energy Affordability is a Policy Choice with Lora Current | LPP 197
Electricity bills are rising. Gas prices are volatile. And families across the country are feeling it. But here’s the uncomfortable truth policymakers don’t like to admit: High energy costs are not just the result of markets—they’re the result of policy choices.Too often, lawmakers pass rules that sound good politically but quietly drive up costs, reduce reliability, and limit economic opportunity. How to Help More Americans Move from Welfare to Work | TWE 162
America’s welfare system is deeply fragmented, costly, and often counterproductive—making it harder, not easier, for people to move forward.I recently joined an online debate on welfare reform framed as a choice between stronger work requirements or structural changes like “One Door” to Work. But that’s the wrong question. The real question is this: how do we reduce dependency, waste fewer taxpayer dollars, and help more people move into work and self-sufficiency? Work requirements matter, but they are not enough on their own.In This Week’s Economy, I explain why real reform requires both: strengthening pro-work incentives and fixing the underlying system that delivers these programs. When policy aligns with how people respond to incentives, we can shift from managing dependency to helping people truly prosper. You can also get the full episode on YouTube, Apple Podcast, or Spotify, and find more information about my work at Ginn Economic Consulting.

Make Markets Work Again | This Week's Economy Ep. 158
We’re at a moment where support for free-market capitalism is slipping—and it’s not hard to see why. From both political parties, we’re hearing the same kinds of ideas: cap prices, punish profits, and have the government take a more active role in managing markets.
