The government shutdown is officially blamed radical cuts to healthcare and other popular programs through the federal budget, which Democrats are resisting, leading to a stalemate. However, there are two deeper, unstated reasons. The first is a long-standing radical conservative ideology, dating back to Nixon and Reagan, that fundamentally opposes most federal government functions beyond the courts and military. The second, more "nefarious" goal, is to massively reduce the federal workforce, aiming to cut a million white-collar jobs—potentially up to 50% of them—and replace them with Artificial Intelligence (AI) to shrink the budget and eliminate social services. This is viewed as part of a larger plan to dismantle government services.
