    Your Intentions Aren’t Your Impact

Your Intentions Aren’t Your ImpactEpisode DescriptionHave you ever found yourself saying, “But that’s not what I meant”?We usually judge ourselves by our intentions, but the people around us experience our words, actions, tone, and behaviors. And sometimes, there can be a significant gap between what we intended and the impact we actually had.In this episode of Life Unlocked, Anthony explores why self-awareness requires more than understanding your own strengths and weaknesses, it also means understanding what it’s like for other people to experience you.Drawing on John C. Maxwell’s Law of Connection from The 21 Irrefutable Laws of Leadership, this episode challenges us to move beyond defending our intentions and become curious about our impact.Because good intentions matter, but great leadership requires awareness of the results those intentions are producing. In This EpisodeThe difference between intention and impactWhy good intentions don’t always create good outcomesHow we tend to judge ourselves by our intentions and others by their actionsWhy self-awareness includes understanding how others experience usThe connection between feedback and leadership blind spotsJohn C. Maxwell’s Law of ConnectionWhy “That’s not what I meant” shouldn’t become an excuse to avoid accountabilityHow curiosity can help us respond without becoming defensiveBook & Leadership Principle Mentioned📚 The 21 Irrefutable Laws of Leadership by John C. MaxwellIn the Law of Connection, Maxwell teaches the importance of leaders connecting with people before expecting to effectively lead them.Communication isn’t complete simply because something was said. Effective leaders pay attention to whether their message was understood and how their communication impacted the person receiving it.Key TakeawayYour intentions belong to you. Your impact belongs to the person who experiences you.Strong leaders pay attention to both.Self-awareness isn’t only asking, “What did I mean?”It’s also having the courage to ask, “How did I come across?”This Week’s ChallengeAsk yourself:“What is it like to experience me?”What is it like to work with you?To disagree with you?To bring you a problem? To make a mistake around you? Then choose someone you trust and ask:“Is there anything about the way I communicate or lead that sometimes creates an impact I may not realize?”When they answer, resist the urge to explain your intentions.Listen.Stay curious. And consider whether there’s something you can learn.Quote from the Episode“Good intentions tell people what is in your heart. The Gift We Often Reject

What if the feedback you don't want to hear is exactly what you need to grow?In this episode of Life Unlocked, Anthony explores our natural resistance to feedback and why learning to receive it with an open mind can transform both our personal and professional growth. We all have blind spots, things others can see that we may not recognize in ourselves. The strongest leaders understand that feedback isn't something to fear or defend against. It's information we can use to become more self-aware, intentional, and effective. The challenge isn't simply receiving feedback. It's having the humility to ask for it.In This EpisodeWhy everyone has blind spotsThe difference between criticism and constructive feedbackWhy our first instinct is often to become defensiveHow curiosity can replace defensivenessWhy confident leaders aren't afraid to say, "What am I missing?"How seeking feedback can strengthen your leadershipThe importance of creating an environment where others feel safe being honest with youKey TakeawayFeedback is a mirror, not a verdict. It doesn't define who you are. It simply gives you another perspective on where you are today, and an opportunity to decide how you want to grow tomorrow. This Week's ChallengeChoose one person you trust and ask them:"What's one thing I could do differently that would make me a better leader?"Then do something difficult:Listen.Don't interrupt. Don't explain. Don't immediately defend yourself.Thank them for their honesty and take some time to reflect on what they shared. You don't have to agree with every piece of feedback you receive, but there may be something valuable in it that you couldn't see on your own.Reflection QuestionWhen someone gives you constructive feedback, is your first instinct to understand, or to defend yourself?Continue Your Leadership JourneyContinue growing with leadership content, self-paced learning, resources, Life Unlocked, and more inside the Nexa Leadership App.🌐 NexaLeadership.com/nexaapp📱 Follow Anthony on Instagram: @anthonyrubioofficialIf this episode challenged you, share it with someone who's committed to becoming a better version of themselves.Growth unlocks your potential. Finding Purpose and Passion

Follow me on Instagram Substack Blog Post In our twenties and thirties we will encounter countless opportunities, many challenges that will help define the trajectory of the rest of our lives. Whether you’re an early-career professional, navigating relationships, or exiting the safe and placid waters of your life, the search for purpose and passion can be daunting. In this blog post, we’re diving into highlights from our recent podcast episode that not only addresses this transition, but offers tips on how to thrive personally and professionally during this crucial time in your life.Pressure ExpectationsIt’s no secret that the pressures of the world can really do a number on us — particularly in our twenties and thirties. When we compare our lives to our peers, we often feel inadequate and lack confidence. Social expectations, be it the pressure to have a good job, get married or tick of various life goals can be extremely stressful.Reflection ExerciseConsider how the reality of your situation compares to your expectations. Are you where you imagined you would be at this point in life? Realizing the difference can give you insight into the sources of your stress and help you frame your goals so they feel true to you.Discovering Your PassionIt takes time to find your passion and it can evolve throughout your life as we grow. No matter how old you are, it’s important to discover what brings you joy and fulfillment. For many people, passion can come through their work, but not everyone has to be so fortunate to pursue their work as a passion. The Exercise: The Passion InventoryTo find what drives you, try this simple exercise: make a “Passion Inventory.” Write out a list of everything you enjoy doing, whether it’s related to work or just personal interests. Think about how to squeeze in a bit more of these activities into your life.Overcoming Self-DoubtOne of the biggest roadblocks in life we face is self-doubt. So many of us are hitting the wall, feeling inadequate while watching everyone else thrive. It’s important to remember that we all struggle, and it’s all right to reach out for help.Strategies for Overcoming Self-Doubt- Positive Affirmation: In the morning read a set of affirmations in form of statements that give you the strength and belief in yourself.- Visualization: Spend a few minutes imagining your best possible life. This is when we start picturing our goals, feeling the passion for it, you already living the plan.Define Objectives and a PlanAnd one of the most critical processes you can do to build a good life is to set clear actionable goals. Career, relationship or personal development goals provide focus and inspiration, whether you’re looking for a headstart or to power through the year ahead. The SMART Goals FrameworkUse the SMART framework to shape your goals:* Specific: Clearly define what you want to achieve.* Measurable: Determine how you will measure your progress.* Achievable: Ensure your goals are realistic and attainable.* Relevant: Align your goals with your values and passions.* Time-bound: Set a deadline for achieving your goals.Pick one goal to work on over the next month and consider holding yourself accountable by tracking your progress.Building a Support NetworkBeing around positive influences is important for personal development. And a good support network can give you encouragement, motivation, and accountability as you face life's challenges.Networking Alignments- Discover mentors who motivate you.— Be part of groups or communities related to your interests- Meet others who are passionate about the same topics. There is no shame in calling on someone from your network; whether it be for advice, encouragement or just a sympathetic ear.ConclusionAll ages can be tricky, we thrive yet do not know how we are doing. Through understanding your expectations, exploring your passions, confronting self-doubt, creating attainable goals, and finding a supportive community, you can design a life that feels whole and true to yourself. For more insights and practical tips, be sure to listen to our latest podcast episode!
