Namely, the outages, but that alone wasn't terrible, until you added update failures that prevent folks that needed to from patching themselves against Copy Fail! Some good things, too, though. PS5 Linux is bringing all the nostalgia back from the PS3 era of full Linux desktop enjoyment. Then, we let a guest, Nate Graham of KDE, crash the back half of the show, and it goes quite long! In the first half we hear everything from why Snaps could, but ultimately don't work for KDE Linux, Printing, and the possible future cadence of the OS once there's a full release (and more, of course). We actually split the interview in two to be a little more digestible and postable later on. In the second half of the interview, we discuss our thoughts on AI, what's good (and mostly bad) about it all, and how KDE and Nate look at submissions and humanity. What we don't need, it seems, is unenforceable policies. Then, a couple final questions like what's up with Full Disk Encryption? What we found out, though, is that Firefox will happily leak your real IP address with WebRTC. Does this defeat the purpose?! Lastly, we try to guess what's going to happen next with RAM prices. They seem to have hit their peak, but will they really come tumbling down? At least for Raspberry Pi, that's not the case as price rises across the entire line are happening. Take a peek, preferably after they update their expired certificate (they seriously did this to us after we speak so highly!) and get a slightly more honest look at your speeds! For bonus points, try a different country. We also dig into some of the technical bits behind those tests. Also, when speaking about jitter, I should have said 'delta' or 'difference' rather than 'average'! Then, more age verification. This time, though, Linux distributions are caught in the crossfire and some are exploring the ways to actually handle potential implementations. Nothing's too dire yet as most of these 'laws' are still bills, and that means they don't matter quite yet. Also, we look into a post by Gabriele Svelto, a Firefox developer, to find out that not only is Firefox a little more reliable than you might think, bad RAM or other hardware bits might actually be the reason things are crashing, and not just Firefox! In this episode we spend a lot of time hyping things up, including some things you might not expect (from a Linux show, not so much Leo). We open up with Zorin making some money moves that helps WinBoat among a few other projects, then really dive into the show with Cosmic! Then, we spend some time dissecting Mozilla's newest AI move. It turns out, if you dig deep enough, there's still hope, contrary to the wildly hot-take style news about things so far. And our final topic, Snapscope, a way to scan your Snaps for vulnerabilities, but then end up chatting way more about Snaps in general. This past week, as we were gearing up to record an episode, life had to just get in the way. We had a little wiggle room mid-week, so we decided to get something on tape anyway. Just something a little less structured. And so, this B-side was born. The object of the game was to dive deep into Cosmic, the first "reference implementation" in our two desktop series (Cosmic and Plasma) and give you honest opinion, good and bad, as we experienced it on livestream... for two hours. Of course there are tangents, because, well, it's still us. The desktop is quite amazing for something that's only (publicly) existed for a little over a year. We poke almost everything that comes with the default install of Pop_OS! 24.04. We'll poke the rest over the next few weeks. We're interested to hear what you think, especially on the audio version. We tried to describe everything we saw as we went because obviously, you can't see, but surely there's room to improve. If you're curious, the video to go with all this is at: https://youtu.be/RwGZiMTtaoI The audio comes from a few odd sources, so things might not sound normal. Still turned out quite well, overall, but at 1:45:20, we lose Dan's voice. I know, I know, we should have had a backup. We usually have three! But the on-the-flyness of the recording kept us from remembering to even bring in the backup-backup. Either way, sorry about that! It's just Leo at that point, so bear with. We know it's not a normal episode, but we still hope you enjoy!

Gentoo website ~August 2001 March 3 2002 public facing movement was easily spotted. March 31 2002, 1.0 was finally released! The huge influx of new users it encouraged caused bandwidth issues for Gentoo. August of 2003, 1.4 was released. Full installation could be completed in under an hour! 2004, marked a change from the dot releases. 2004.0 released February 28, 2004. Daniel Robbins, the creator and founder, resigns from Gentoo. Despite that work continued. 2004.1 was released shortly after that news, dot 2 in July and dot 3 in November. September 2005, the first Gentoo Council was elected. Daniel Robbins makes his glorious return to the project! This lasted about 8 days before he resigned again. Other developers joined Robbins. Stability questions around the stability of the Gentoo Project October 2009, a LiveDVD release. 11.0, released in 2011. In 2015 A new website was announced! After the air was cleared, an actual NEW website. In 2016, Gentoo Choice Edition. Then in July, Choice Edition Part Dos. word crimes In 2017, 17.0 in November and an experimental 17.1 in December. An issue on Github in 2018. 2019 saw the 17.1 profiles finally stabilize. In 2021, the addition of 20.0 profiles were released. In 1984, Robert Scheifler wrote. X is our “reaction” to W Ultrix Window Manager, or uwm Tom's Window Manager, which eventually became Tab Window Manager, or twm Open Look Specification The OSF narrows the search for a User Interface. HP and Microsoft's CXI and DEC's XUI to create the HP OSF/Motif Window Manager. Sun went on to build OpenWindows, which was X with OPEN LOOK on top to replace SunView. COSE In 1994, The OSF and Unix International, a body meant to standardize UNIX, merged, and in 96, merged again with X/Open into The Open Group. Motif and CDE became one KDE enters the scene. May of 2000 when Motif was released as OpenMotif. LessTif, because Less is Mo, published an initial statement August 6th, 2012, CDE was relicensed under the LGPL and was available on SourceForge, where it still lives today. After opening it up, 2.2.1 was released on March 1st, 2014. The final release, at least as of this recording, 2.5.1, dropped in October of 2022. February 1, 1997, A board of directors had been elected for Software in the Public Interest. February 20, 1997, Debian shows its intent to ratify a constitution. July 1, 1997, Debian is really launched into space this time to monitor plant growth in microgravity, sending video and other data back home. December 2, 1998, Debian ratifies a Constitution. At the beginning of 1999, Wichert Akkerman was elected Debian Project Leader and started with giving Debian a permanent identity. Logo on debian.org as of April 14, 1997 January 24, 1999, the logo license for Captain Blue-Eye, expired again. February 4, 1999, a Logo contest announcement! May 3, 1999, the submissions were in. Captain Blue-Eye was thought to be too Linux-specific. June 8, 1999, The iconic swirl that we see today won the vote. July 6, 1999, dpkg version 2, which was hinted at by Ben Collins back in May, is now officially a thing and the specifications are out there boasting a more modular design. Debian weathered the Y2k storm with no major problems. In October 2001, LAN Comp Systems begin mastering Debian 3.0 on DVD ahead of the official release. Debian 3.0 was delayed because of broken boot floppies. 2002, the first net installation images were available. 2007, through a disagreement with Mozilla on backporting security fixes, would be replaced by the free-software version, Iceweasel. 2013, the trailing 0 on the major release is dropped. Minor releases will continue adding the point, as in .1, .2, etc. Also in 2013, multi-arch support is added. 2020, Jonathan Carter was elected Debian Project Leader and has been reaffirmed three more times, and is currently serving as Leader. June 10, 2023, Debian 12 is released, codenamed Bookworm.
